I think it's a very original and unique song. We haven't seen anything like it before or after it. It is very catchy and you can't help but tap your feet to it. It was a worldwide phenomenon except in the US. What gives ?
Ricky Martin's Maria is arguably the best song of 1990s why it's not a hit in the US ?

R2 1995 was the year of Selena in the U.S. Her death was a cultural phenomenon. Her murder trial was also pretty big that year, only second to the O.J. Simpson case. Ricky Martin was just a General Hospital actor. The massive coverage of Selena's death and the rise of Jennifer Lopez (who played her in the movie) had given way to the Latin Explosion of the late '90s, from which he benefited greatly.

Because the name Maria is annoying.

Because there’s no English version ?

Americans can't understand a gay Puerto Rican singing a hot love song to a Mexican domestic.

Had he sung, "Mario" it would have done much, much better.

We lost interest after she married that von Trapp guy and became a Nazi.

Himbo can't sing. That's why.

Nothing particularly original or unique about it.
It's one of hundreds upon hundreds of similar-sounding songs in this genre, disparagingly referred to in the Spanish-speaking world as "tropi-pop". All tropi-pop relies on the same chord changes, the same rhythms, and the same lyrical themes. It's thought of as a generic, watered-down version of actual, authentic tropical Latin music genres...but music like this has always been, and continues to be, very popular in Latin America and Spain.
Ricky did benefit from top-notch producers and video directors, though. At this point in time, he was doing the tropi-pop thing probably better than anybody.

As a performing artist, Ricky Martin was best at drinking piss.

It wasn't a hit stateside like Living La Vida Loca but I definitely heard it a lot. Certainly heard it played more than other tracks on that cd like Private Emotion and She's All I Ever Had.

Ricky looked so gross with that long hair in the mid-'90s. He looked so, SO much better when he broke out in the U.S. mainstream '99.

It was a hit, in the 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 20, 2021 10:28 AM |
Because everyone knew he was really singing about Mario not Maria.....

Everyone knows the best song of the 90s was "Jive Connie" by Connie Francis, which was a MONSTER hit in Europe in 1992 and went platinum multiple times over. The song is still a staple of parties in the German-speaking world.

The most seductive performer ever. Evah. I’m pretty sure the song was pretty big in Nueva York.

He's so handsome... In Miami where I live, that was a very popular song back then in the clubs!

People who say "arguably" are as deficient in English as they are in musical taste.
We now have evidence.
