Bebe Neuwirth - Dear Diary - unsold 1996 pilot wins 1997 Oscar for Best Live Action Short

Jeff Blumenkrantz found this one camera half hour pilot was ahead of its time, in his opinion... on VHS in his closet and noticed that there wasn't a "clean" copy. so if you have twenty two minutes to waste...

Okay, I watched out of curiosity... and it IS a curiosity. Bebe is pretty winning, but the show's all over the place. What is all this about?

What really struck me was how much it anticipates SEX AND THE CITY stylistically--the V/O narration, the NYC grit-and-glam setting, the gleeful materialism (a Calvin Klein dress--from BARNEYS!), the heroine's insecurity and narcissism. (There were also echoes of ALLY MACBEAL and MOLLY DODD.)

Bebe aside, it would have made for a hideously boring series. How the FLUCK did this win an Oscar? I barely lasted through 20 minutes.
