“Jane, you ignorant slut”

I defy you name a funnier four-word comedy phrase.

by Anonymousreply 74April 24, 2021 11:03 AM

Where's the beef....cake?

by Anonymousreply 1April 19, 2021 11:45 PM

Yes, I forgot to include the word “to.” Oh, Dear!

by Anonymousreply 4April 19, 2021 11:46 PM

Those skits weren’t the least bit funny, OP.

by Anonymousreply 5April 19, 2021 11:49 PM

R5, the phrase and the delivery of the phrase were funny.

by Anonymousreply 6April 19, 2021 11:52 PM

Well, nobody's perfect.

by Anonymousreply 7April 19, 2021 11:55 PM

"These go to 11."

I’m crushing your head.

by Anonymousreply 9April 20, 2021 12:03 AM

Bring me the axe.

by Anonymousreply 10April 20, 2021 12:10 AM

No soup for you.

by Anonymousreply 11April 20, 2021 12:11 AM

I'm thinking, I'm thinking...

by Anonymousreply 12April 20, 2021 12:18 AM

“That’s what she said”

My sister and I crack these all the time and marvel at how many times it fits (hilariously).

by Anonymousreply 13April 20, 2021 12:20 AM

"I'm thinking it over."

- Jack Benny (famously frugal) after a very long pause, in reply to a robber who points a gun at him and demands "Your money or your life!"

by Anonymousreply 14April 20, 2021 12:22 AM

Op that line isn’t funny.

by Anonymousreply 15April 20, 2021 12:24 AM

OP wins, and yes, the line is funny then and now.

by Anonymousreply 16April 20, 2021 12:25 AM

R14 I beat you to it!

Yes, you did, R12. My chagrin is offset by the knowledge that there's at least one other old time radio fan here.

by Anonymousreply 21April 20, 2021 12:31 AM

No, dear.

by Anonymousreply 25April 20, 2021 1:18 AM

“Allison you are humiliating all of us”

by Anonymousreply 26April 20, 2021 1:51 AM

It IS funny. SNL's Point/Counterpoint was a takeoff on a 60 Minutes segment of the same name, featuring James Kilpatrick and Shana Alexander in a one-minute conservative-vs-liberal debate. Akroyd accurately nailed Kilpatrick's brittle delivery.

Funniest line reading ever.

by Anonymousreply 43April 21, 2021 2:55 AM

She did not just twirl a baton. That baton was on fire!

by Anonymousreply 44April 21, 2021 3:31 AM

R44 here. Sorry. Didn't think of the post as just four words. I'll go through the rest of my life with my dress stuck in the back of my pantyhose.

by Anonymousreply 45April 21, 2021 3:34 AM

R43 for the win.

by Anonymousreply 46April 21, 2021 11:56 AM

Did I do that?

[quote]“Jane, you ignorant slut”

I just don't get the humor in this phrase Never have. Can someone explain it to me?

Let me just say this is not based on any feminist idea bla blah bla, I just don't get it.

by Anonymousreply 48April 21, 2021 1:05 PM

"He's a righteous dude!"

by Anonymousreply 49April 21, 2021 1:14 PM

R48 I don’t get it, either.

by Anonymousreply 50April 21, 2021 1:15 PM

Dan’s character has no control over his reaction to being questioned by a woman, even while cameras are rolling.

Y’know, like a Republican.

That’s what’s funny.

by Anonymousreply 51April 21, 2021 1:16 PM

In what, dog years?

by Anonymousreply 52April 21, 2021 1:19 PM

R51. Ooh, okay. Well, that's kinda funny. Certainly not worth all of the acclaim tho

Thanks

by Anonymousreply 53April 21, 2021 1:19 PM

Lucy: I made a boo-boo!

by Anonymousreply 54April 21, 2021 1:20 PM

Wouldn't fly today, that's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 55April 21, 2021 1:29 PM

R51. I feel like the real humor is the abrupt, uncalled-for escalation from simple debate on some political issue to over-the-top, personal, un-PC jab. All delivered in a monotone, matter of fact manner

by Anonymousreply 56April 21, 2021 2:09 PM

It's Aykroyd's delivery that makes the line a classic. R56 is correct.

by Anonymousreply 57April 21, 2021 2:31 PM

The above few get it. It's just such a pompous, misogynistic, way over the top statement and just so ridiculous that makes it funny. That was back when women's issues were coming to the forefront - Gloria Steinem et al - and his white male privileged was threatened. Single Mary Richards moving to a new city by herself was still a novel concept.

by Anonymousreply 58April 21, 2021 2:49 PM

Op you big piece of shit!

Haha so hilarious??

by Anonymousreply 59April 21, 2021 4:28 PM

No, "Jane you ignorant slut" is not funny out of context. It wasn't funny heard out of context in the skit, which is not something anyone would attempt today in a world of preciousness against comedy amid the foulness of reactionary hate speech.

It's not funny in the context of the skit itself, either. It just sets the tone, theme and delivery of Ackroyd's screed, which itself is where the humor lies. Curtin, too, is funny, but just as a straight intro to the clincher.

OP = Lout

by Anonymousreply 60April 21, 2021 4:57 PM

Henny has it as R24.

by Anonymousreply 61April 21, 2021 5:03 PM

Thank God R60 arrived to let everyone know what’s not funny. Without her we’d be laughing needlessly.

by Anonymousreply 62April 21, 2021 5:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 63April 21, 2021 5:17 PM

R62, I'm so glad [italic]someone[/italic] got it.

It was my response to the depth and thoughtfulness of previous posters in the thread.
