The idea that HIV wasn’t a worthwhile disease for the drug companies to investigate is sheer foolishness. There was an enormous potential for profit in finding a cure or a vaccine. The problem was that HIV is a very unusual disease in that it attacks the immune system which is the system that normally protects us from diseases. Trying figure out how to fight it was probably one of the greatest challenges to medicine in recent times. But in studying HIV, science advanced a great deal in all autoimmune diseases, and it’s because of the advances made in the study of HIV that developing the vaccine for COVID advanced so quickly. Also, COVID by virtue of its structure and the way it attacks the body, is a much easier virus to counteract.

Reason goes out the window when this topic is discussed. Someone suggests - quite rightly - that people who are vaccinated against HIV will be likely to spread other infections among themselves (as they will have a false sense of immunity to everything) and they are then accused of being unfucked, unfuckable, dried-up old elderfags. When I was watching It's a Sin and saw the scene where Ritchie realizes he has HIV and says to the doctor that he knows it's a death sentence, I was thinking that in just 10 years they'd have the first cocktail, in 25 they'd have Prep, and now, soon, we'll have a vaccine for it. Although. We have a friend who was diagnosed with metastatic cancer in several sites about 18 months ago. He’s getting some immunotherapies (I’m too stupid to understand all of his treatments), hasn’t had any surgeries, and he’s responding exceptionally well. I do believe that if he’d been diagnosed 25 years ago, he’d have been dead in three months. Instead he’s enjoying a very nice quality of life right now. He probably won’t live as long as the rest of us, but shit, any one of us could die at any time.
