That surprises me. NYC is ranked #31 for population within city limits, based on the "city proper" sorting at this Wikipedia article (though it could be 32, depending on how Chongqing is ranked).
It's larger urban area population is ranked higher at #11.
8 of the largest urban areas are in Asia.
