Things you can't live without, even on vacation

For me, it's Charmin.

Everyone knows that my first stop on any vacation is a trip to the store to get Charmin. Even when I went to Mexico. If I worry that there might not be charmin available, I take a few rolls with me.

by Anonymousreply 86April 14, 2021 1:05 PM

What you wipe your ass with is suppose to be of interest to DL? I suppose for some.

by Anonymousreply 1April 12, 2021 7:09 PM

Melatonin

by Anonymousreply 2April 12, 2021 7:10 PM

bottle of my favorite habanero sauce!

by Anonymousreply 3April 12, 2021 7:12 PM

My Havaiana flip-flops. First thing I do when I get in is take off my shoes, slip them on and into the shower. Otherwise, never, but in the house and freshly washed...relief.

by Anonymousreply 4April 12, 2021 7:20 PM

A proper foaming hand soap for the hotel bathroom.

by Anonymousreply 5April 12, 2021 7:21 PM

My Abercrombie cargos. I’ve had the same pair since 2002, I received them from my partner on 42nd birthday. I love them. 20 plus years, still rock them. Great quality.

by Anonymousreply 6April 12, 2021 7:22 PM

My MEMORY foam pillow.

by Anonymousreply 7April 12, 2021 7:24 PM

I used to be like this where I HAD to have certain things wherever I was.

It got tiresome.

As long as I can get a standard version of whatever - toothpaste, dental floss, pillow, or whatever - I'm good.

Now, if what you're asking is whether there are items such as a tootbrush that aren't available at all, that's a whole separate matter. But, if it's just particular brand or personalized item, I stand by not bothering anymore.

by Anonymousreply 8April 12, 2021 7:31 PM

I have a feeling that the OP isn’t very charmin clean.

by Anonymousreply 9April 12, 2021 7:40 PM

¡No exprime el papel higenico Encantador!

by Anonymousreply 10April 12, 2021 7:50 PM

My Doc Johnson 12-speed double-headed dildo.

by Anonymousreply 11April 12, 2021 8:26 PM

Charmin will clog your pipes faster than any other tp. Had a plumber and life experience tell me that.

That said, I couldn't live without coffee.

by Anonymousreply 12April 12, 2021 8:26 PM

San Pellegrino

by Anonymousreply 13April 12, 2021 8:36 PM

My personal toiletries such as hair care, facial and body products, and of course medications. I'm not going to subject myself to cheap hotel shampoo or soap.

by Anonymousreply 14April 12, 2021 8:39 PM

[quote]OP: Even when I went to Mexico.

Even when I went in Mexico.

by Anonymousreply 15April 12, 2021 8:46 PM

R8 -same. My flip flops for the shower and I am done.

by Anonymousreply 16April 12, 2021 8:57 PM

I love my Charmin too OP. My family gets that awful Scott 1000 roll. That stuff feels like I’m wiping with razor blades. Angel Soft also works well enough in a pinch.

by Anonymousreply 17April 12, 2021 8:58 PM

[quote]My personal toiletries such as hair care, facial and body products, and of course medications.

Pretty much.

by Anonymousreply 18April 12, 2021 9:08 PM

I'm with R8. I like luxury things or ordinary things that may take some special care to find. It's not about spending the most money but about having the everyday things that feel a little special.

But when I travel? I go to civilized places. They have toilet paper and toothpaste and shampoo and clothes if o need something and the rest; I'm not staying in goat herders yurts in the Steelers.

Good hotels have good shampoos, and the rest. I'm not that precious about toilet paper brands or coarseness or play or quilting; it's to wipe my ass not an experience if texture and precision craftsmanship like a fine fountain pen. I don't need a dozen creams and emollients, maybe one bottle of hair cream that lasts forever - the only thing I can think of that can be at all tricky to replace with something else.

I would rather not travel with a small suitcase of "favorite essentials" and take the chance that I may have to buy something. Worse things could happen.

And traveling with toilet paper . That's nuts in any but the.moat primitive places.

by Anonymousreply 19April 12, 2021 9:22 PM

Facial cleanser and moisturizer, deodorant and most importantly, lip balm.

by Anonymousreply 20April 12, 2021 9:40 PM

Blow dryer. Even the best hotels don't have dryers strong enough for my hair.

When traveling in other countries and staying at a great hotel, I always ask them to send me a hairstylist. My hair needs professional care, but a good hairdryer used the night before a meeting is good enough most times.

by Anonymousreply 21April 12, 2021 10:36 PM

Cock.

by Anonymousreply 22April 12, 2021 10:38 PM

Tweezers. I cannot stand those little bugger shoots of ear hair.

by Anonymousreply 23April 12, 2021 10:46 PM

Oral-B dental floss.

by Anonymousreply 24April 12, 2021 10:59 PM

Sally Hansen Hard As Nails. I am a professional guitarist and have used this product with my multivitamins for years. Fingernails are the best plectrums for the acoustic guitar, in terms of fingerstyle. Picks are always good for strumming and flatpicking.

by Anonymousreply 25April 12, 2021 11:03 PM

[quote]I'm not going to subject myself to cheap hotel shampoo or soap.

Then don't stay at cheap hotels. I've found many mid-price (and up) hotels have great toiletries.

by Anonymousreply 26April 12, 2021 11:10 PM

This is an anonymous site, right? When I travel, I take a piece of my childhood blanket. It helps me sleep. I'm nearly 50.

by Anonymousreply 27April 12, 2021 11:15 PM

R27 -- No shame in that. I actually do the same thing at home. I had a large amount of emotional damage and pain as a child from a natural disaster, having a piece of my childhood to hold is very soothing. Though, I'm planning on ordering a replica.

by Anonymousreply 28April 12, 2021 11:26 PM

This lens blower, as part of my camera gear. I almost always get stopped at airports for having this in my luggage, because it looks like a bomb.

R27 and r28, I also have a blankie. It’s not from childhood, I bought it in my early 20s about 30!years ago. It’s a down filled quilted microfiber blanket, much thinner than a down comforter. It’s getting even thinner but I sleep so much better with it.

by Anonymousreply 33April 13, 2021 12:48 AM

My asshole is allergic to Charmin. It causes my ass to break out. Yuk. Too raw. Lots of lint in Charmin! I like Kirkland and Quilted Northern.

Coffee in the morning. I always scope out the hotel: do they have a Starbucks (or other coffee shop) in the lobby, etc.

by Anonymousreply 47April 13, 2021 3:04 AM

Meth

by Anonymousreply 48April 13, 2021 3:17 AM

I always pack a pair of flip flops in case the hotel doesn’t provide slippers so I don’t have to walk around the room barefoot. I also pack saline nasal spray because I always get congested in hotels.

by Anonymousreply 49April 13, 2021 3:52 AM

I’m with R32. A couple of good books or I’ll go crazy. Toiletries are easy to find if you forget them but you can’t always find something decent to read.

I think it's CN Traveller that has a feature of "what I won't leave home without" or something like. The editors' own recommendations tend to be quite reasonable, practical things, but the celebrity lists are often equally ridiculous, a $9800 cashmere "light as a feather" Hermes poncho and a big pair of sunglasses ($3600) to hide under for the trip...

by Anonymousreply 53April 13, 2021 7:37 AM

My 12 inch dildo.

by Anonymousreply 54April 13, 2021 7:45 AM

Baby Powder Constarch. It keeps me dry and fresh in the nether region.

A few rolls? How much shitting are you doing on vacation?

by Anonymousreply 56April 13, 2021 12:28 PM

Another vote for earplugs. I've used them every night (and every daytime nap) since I was a tween. I simply cannot sleep without them.

by Anonymousreply 57April 13, 2021 1:04 PM

R29, that’s an anal cleaner!

by Anonymousreply 58April 13, 2021 2:17 PM

A few days without charmin, and my ass feels rough and callused

by Anonymousreply 59April 13, 2021 2:17 PM

I hate the fancy toilet paper. It’s like wiping your ass with a t-shirt. I prefer the cheap stuff.

by Anonymousreply 60April 13, 2021 2:18 PM

[quote]Melatonin

Do you take Melatonin with alcohol? I've read mixed things about this. Surely a glass or two of wine at dinner and then 1mg of Melatonin 5-6 hours later can't be harmful.

by Anonymousreply 61April 13, 2021 2:32 PM

Blistex and ear plugs. I can't sleep without them.

by Anonymousreply 62April 13, 2021 2:35 PM

That's quite weird OP. I like my creature comforts but not to the extent I'll take specific things on holiday with me because I can't do without them for a week or two.

I take my usual toiletries, medication, clothes, books/kindle, phone & charger and that's all I need. I don't even bother taking my electric toothbrush, I usually buy a manual one at the airport.

by Anonymousreply 63April 13, 2021 2:36 PM

I used to travel with Peet's coffee and a little French press as I couldn't stand bad in-room coffee. Some hotels and Airbnb now installed Nespresso machines, which makes a very good cup. (I like finding the Nespresso boutiques in new cities, too), so if there's a fairly good chance there's decent coffee, I'll take my chances.

Now that many hotels have stopped room service and lobby coffee 'due to the pandemic', I'm probably going to go back to bringing my own. I did find this nifty little single-cup coffee making device called a Palm Press that takes up very little room, cleans easily, and can't break.

R56, Have you ever exited a tour bus in Europe and been handed squares of newspapers?

Or entered public restrooms and seen only footpads, no toilets?

I have, alas! On our many European vacations (just call us the Griswolds), my husband and I would always carry a couple rolls of toilet paper (once being embarrassed when, with a Swiss B&B's proprietess watching, a roll fell from a backpack and unfurled all down her driveway!).

by Anonymousreply 67April 13, 2021 6:19 PM

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but Datalounge. I don't have backup plan if this site gets shutdown, so I don't know what I'm going to do.

by Anonymousreply 68April 13, 2021 6:22 PM

[quote][R56], Have you ever exited a tour bus in Europe and been handed squares of newspapers?

Yes, but I don't need to shit more than a dozen times on a two-week vacation. My question wasn't about carrying TP, but about the amount you're carrying.

by Anonymousreply 69April 13, 2021 7:24 PM

OP Charmin is called 'Cushelle' in the UK and Ireland. In most of he rest of Europe it's called 'Zewa'.

In Spain and Portugal it's 'Colhogar'

France, Norway and Sweden it's called 'Lotus'

Netherlands and Belgium it's called 'Edet'

Even available in Mexico as 'Regio'

You need never panic again on vacation.

[quote]Have you ever exited a tour bus in Europe and been handed squares of newspapers?

Also puzzled by the need to haul rolls -- multiple rolls, even -- of toilet paper around the civilized world. Those tour buses are taking you to a special hand-picked selection of The Worst Shitholes in Europe it would seem.

In any case, instead of rolls of toilet paper, why not substitute something that fits in your pocket, and needn't be imported from America? You can buy a 10 or 12 pack of individual packets of tissue paper (the Kleenex sort) easily for €1.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 71April 13, 2021 7:36 PM

R71, not to be pedantic, but I think the Kleenex tissue stuff is not really made to be processed in the sewers. TP actually breaks down better and less prone to clogging.

That said, no, I don't travel with my own TP.

On top of that Charmin has made the sheets more narrow. I switched after they did that. No, I don't have a fat / wide ass.

Pepto-Bismol tablets. When you've overindulged at dinner, the last thing you need at 4 am when your tummy is rumbling is to try to find an open drug store, or hope the front desk has something.

In fact, when I travel I carry a quart-size ziplock bag of blister packs of OTC medicines that may come in handy, such as Advil, probiotic, Sudafed, Imodium, a few Band-Aids, antibiotic ointment, Lanacane for bug bites, etc. I now you can usually find this stuff anywhere, but, as I said, do you really want to be looking for an English-speaking pharmacy when you're suffering?

by Anonymousreply 80April 14, 2021 2:53 AM

Well, r69, you've also apparently never eaten unpasteurized cheese in Portugal!

by Anonymousreply 81April 14, 2021 4:11 AM

I’ll never forget one of the biggest fights between my mother & grandma, when Mom had to move in with her to take care of her temporarily after surgery. Mom brought tons of Charmin with her. Grandma was very Huffy because she already had Charmin well stocked. However, it was Charmin Red & we’re Charmin Blue people (red is 1-ply). I remember they made Charmin Green, 3-ply, but I think that got discontinued.
