His performance as Tony Montana is right there with Michael Corleone. It’s incredible that both roles were by the same actor.
Al Pacino Should’ve Won an Oscar for ‘Scarface’

There is no category for “Best Chewing of Scenery”.

Pacino would be the perennial favorite r1. That’s all he does. Him and Sean Penn.

There’s no chewing of scenery in Scarface. Every moment Pacino was on screen was brilliance.

Tell that to Al's lil' friend.

The biggest chewing of scenery came after the Oscar.

What exactly is your criticism of that iconic scene, R4?

No
just no

Well, he didn't really need the grenade launcher. He could have just gone out and chewed the bad guys up.

Are you saying that Tony Montana wasn’t a realistic portrayal of an 80’s coke kingpin in Miami, R8? I don’t get it.

"Are you saying that Tony Montana wasn’t a realistic portrayal of an 80’s coke kingpin in Miami, [R8]? I don’t get it."
And you never will.
God bless.

He's the one who keeps changing the taste of Coke!

Pacino finally won for a dismal performance, just like Paul Muni, who played the original Tony Camonte.

Scent of a Woman was a dismal performance?

R13 hate that movie. But Scarface is great. Sometimes “big acting” is the only thing appropriate for the role, as would be true here. “Over acting” isn’t always the wrong choice, sometimes it’s by far the best choice.
There’s also an old acting expression “when in doubt, so less.” Generally, for actors who aren’t that great or or don’t have much in the way of changing, it’s much safer for them to underplay everything - which is what most of today’s actors do, because if they went “big” it would be beyond embarrassing.
It takes far more skill to pull off “big” acting well.

Scarface is ridiculous brownface bullshit. Thy painted bite actors dark and told them to talk like Desi Arnaz. It’s pretty gross.

They painted white actors dark

Tom Courtenay should have won for The Dresser that year.

Like a lot of de Palma movies, Scarface is junk food. You can get a sugar high from it, it’s full of big, flashy gestures, but there’s really nothing there. Pacino’s acting makes sense in that context, I guess, but it’s such a comedown from his work in The Godfather and Dog Day Afternoon.

Th only De Palma movie I enjoy is Carrie.
