HAROLD AND MAUDE prequel?

HAROLD AND MAUDE screenwriter Colin Higgins wanted to do a prequel called GROVER AND MAUDE where Maude learns about stealing cars from Richard Pryor's Grover from SILVER STREAK, also written by Higgins.

Was Vivian Pickles going to steal the spotlight again?

Ruth Gordon paired with Richard Pryor in a prequel to Harold and Maude? About car theft? Would it be a dark comedy? Pure slapstick? Slapstick with racial puns? The choice of Pryor seems odd now but at the time he was very famous, considered “outrageous,” and Silver Streak was huge.

If only.

Ok, Helen Keller.

I’m glad this didn’t happen. It would have tainted the magic of Harold and Maude, in my opinion.

That old newspaper article is interesting to read. I love his casting choices for his next project after Foul Play, four popular leading men at the time... ALL opposite Goldie Hawn.

Plus, his comments on Chevy Chase seem veiled. Sounds like another case of someone vowing never to work with Chase again but trying to remain cool and professional about it. LOL!

R6 It’s interesting to think about the film if they’d cast a heartthrob hunk of the time, opposite Gordon. It might have ruined it.

Ehh... coulda been interesting. For some reason the idea of this makes me immediately think of Bette Davis and Earnest Borgnine in BUNNY O’HARE (1971).
