[quote] There's No Business Like Show Business, Ethel Merman
You could argue that Merman had 3 signature songs.
Early in her career it was 'I Got Rhythm'.
Then it became "Everything's Comin' Up Roses", which she sang at two presidential inauguration galas and in the spoof of herself in the movie AIRPLANE!
Finally the aforementioned 'Show Business', which she did not really introduce (it was sung to her in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN; she had only two lines, one of which was "There's no business like show business if you tell me it's so") but became widely associated with her because she sang it in the movie by the same name in 1954.

Madonna's is actually "MateriaLl Girl" (which is how she sued to always, ALWAYS be referred to on MTV and VH1), but she hates that that song is associated with her and disavows it.

I always thin k it's cool that the song orchestras always play for awards shows when Meryl Streep is ushered on is almost always "I See Me" from DEATH BECOMES HER. It's a hilarious song, but it's also kind of catchy as something for an orchestra to play in that situation.

Marlene Dietrich always had "La vie en rose" played when she walked on at concerts, although I would have thought she was more associated with both "Lili Marleen" or "Falling in Love Again." But the former is a march (and not romantic), and the latter is too sad.
Wherever she appeared, Hedy Lamarr would walk on to the strains of "The Most beautiful Girl in the World" (Richard Rodgers', not Prince's) because that was the appellation her studio promoted her under.

r98, I bet you're British or European. "Xanadu" was much bigger across the Atlantic than it was in the US.
I think her US audience would say her signature songs are more likely her #1 hits here: "I Honestly Love You," "Have You Never Been Mellow," "Magic" and "Physical" (the latter an enormous hit in the US), and her duets from "Grease" with Travolta, "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want."
"Let Me Be There," "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)," "Please Mr. Please," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," and even "Make a Move on Me," "Heart Attack," and "Twist of Fate" all did better than "Xanadu" did in the US.

Such varied and great responses. Some artists, like Garland, can have more than one signature song and some songs, like My Man/Mon Homme, can be signatures for more than one artist.

[quote] Bing Crosby - White Christmas
Although 'White Christmas' was his best selling song, for obvious reasons, Crosby did not open his radio show with 'White Christmas'. Instead, he used "Where the Blue of the Night (Meets the Gold of the Day)"
[quote] By 1936, he replaced his former boss, Paul Whiteman, as host of the weekly NBC radio program Kraft Music Hall, where he remained for the next ten years. "Where the Blue of the Night (Meets the Gold of the Day)," with his trademark whistling, became his theme song and signature tune.
