Former steroid user here. It’s the desperately chasing youthfulness and the endless working out to defy old age using steroids that’s the issue.

We as older gay men are supposed to have figured this out by now- that everyone has their day in the sun and then you bow out eventually, unless you’re a professional athlete or personal trainer this amount of obsession and fastidiousness about one’s appearance is unseemly and borders upon mental illness- similar to eating disorders or body dismorphia. It also sets a BAD example of steroid use (and broiling your insides) to gay youth- which is anathema to Dan Savage is preaching to youth...

Steroids and hormones used without medical supervision speed up certain cancers that may have lain dormant your entire life, at a young age they can negatively affect bone development and cardiovascular tissue, and unlike your own testosterone the synthetics seriously bog down your kidneys and liver while processing them out of your system- never mind if you’re imbibing alcohol or party drugs as well. With that feeling of invincibility, users lift overly-heavy weight that can seriously damage joints and tear muscle tissue over and over again, leaving scarring that heals over irreparably. That’s why the skin eventually looks rippled and “grizzly”.
