Black Widow and Cruella will open day and date in theatres and on Disney Plus premiere access ($30 rental in addition to Disney Plus subscription price)
$30? As if.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 23, 2021 7:54 PM |
At least HBOMax isn’t charging an extra fee for their first run releases
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 23, 2021 8:09 PM |
$30 is like the cost of a ticket in Manhattan
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 23, 2021 8:11 PM |
$30 would be a bargain if you had more than three kids who wanted to watch it.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 23, 2021 8:13 PM |
Cruella I just don't know, but they just kissed at least $900 million away on Black Widow with this decision (of which they would have gotten half).
Studios don't want theaters to die. That is where their money is. Black Widow would have made a billion just by virtue of being a Marvel movie. Disney would have gotten roughly half that.
Now they will get ... $50-$75M?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 23, 2021 8:29 PM |
Actually most movies lose money on theatrical release and Disney says one premium rental equals approximately five or six box office tickets.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 23, 2021 8:48 PM |
This is what should be done until coronavirus is overcome.
The theaters have LOTS of bailout money available from the government now.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 23, 2021 9:05 PM |
Didn’t Mulan prove the $30 model didn’t work?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 24, 2021 8:55 AM |
Should Disney be paying people $30 to watch this crap.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 24, 2021 10:01 AM |
[quote]most movies lose money on theatrical release
Yeah I'm sure the studio is real worried about all those MCU bombs.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 24, 2021 10:41 AM |
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about R5. ZERO.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 24, 2021 12:47 PM |
The problem with Mulan is that nobody wanted a live action Mulan, especially the one that Disney delivered - without songs and without fun dragon and cricket sidekick. It was made primarily for the Chinese box office.
People in the US actually want to watch Cruella and Black Widow.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 24, 2021 12:55 PM |
They should keep holding Black Widow. I wanna see that in theaters. Why don't they hold it for fall or Christmas? It would make so much money.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 24, 2021 1:05 PM |
[quote] Studios don't want theaters to die. That is where their money is.
At the moment it is out of their hands though, because theaters make their money selling snacks at their concession stands. Due to the pandemic a great deal of viewers prefer to stay away from the Karens and mask denying Deplorables and avoid movie theaters. They prefer to watch their media entertainment from the comfort of their homes.
Hollywood goes where the people are. At home using streaming services.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 24, 2021 1:13 PM |
How much exactly R11, do you think Disney will make using this $30 model? R8 is right. Mulan was a bomb as was Raya and the Last Dragon. Not many will pay $30 for these movies when they know they will be on Disney+, for "free", in 30 days.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 24, 2021 1:18 PM |
I can't believe people will pay $30 to watch a movie on their TV one time. These are probably the same people who have no retirement fund and nothing saved for emergencies.
Jesus, wait three months for it to stream along with everything else or buy the blu-ray. Instant gratification is fucking expensive!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 24, 2021 1:34 PM |
I wouldn't pay $30 -- but if you've got a family of four, it's not bad at all compared to four movie tickets + concessions + parking, if you're in a big city.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 24, 2021 1:41 PM |
Disney is smart enough to realize that lots of Americans aren't going to go rushing into a theater in May r5. That's why they are doing this, they tried to hold off and go purely theater release.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 24, 2021 1:47 PM |
Black Widow has been pushed to a July cinema release in the UK.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 24, 2021 3:07 PM |
Easter is around. Disney isn't going to pass on an opportunity to make money off of a holiday weekend.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 24, 2021 3:50 PM |
Cruella should be interesting. Can Emma Stone put asses on seats and open a movie?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 24, 2021 4:48 PM |
I might watch one of them for $20, don’t have to give me $30.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 24, 2021 5:06 PM |
From what I've heard they Disney should destroy all evidence of Black Widow. Apparently it is a complete train wreck.

[Quote] Apparently it is a complete train wreck.
Could you elaborate??
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 25, 2021 10:37 AM |
I expect 3D movies to make yet another comeback, maybe this time successfully, to draw people back to the cinemas

[quote] From what I've heard they Disney should destroy all evidence of Black Widow. Apparently it is a complete train wreck.
It looks as good as any other Marvel movie, from what I've seen.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 25, 2021 11:09 AM |
The theatres will be open where I am by then so I'm not worried, I'll be watching Black Widow in the theatre with a group of my friends.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 25, 2021 11:32 AM |
R25 I am not sure if you're serious about this? 3D is dead, the ONLY time it is any good is for animated films and people resent paying an additional premium for a 3D ticket, and most people don't like having to wear the glasses. It was a failed attempt.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 25, 2021 12:20 PM |
R28 Avatar still has two more sequels 😁
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 25, 2021 12:40 PM |
R28, I assure you, 4DX is THE ONLY WAY to fully experience a Marvel blockbuster. Unfortunately, you can't be living in some backwater if you want to see it.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 25, 2021 12:46 PM |
I am dead serious about it, R28.
Not saying it will be successful this time, but I can see it happening again.
We’ll see.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 25, 2021 12:53 PM |
Lol no one gives a fuck about Avatar.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 25, 2021 12:55 PM |
This stunt Disney is doing is just for this year. Warner won't be doing its HBO Max hybrid model in 2022.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 25, 2021 1:01 PM |
Cinemas were dying well before Covid... If you think reopening at the end of lockdown will reverse their fortunes, you're sadly mistaken: mistaken about the cinemas and the end of lockdown.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 25, 2021 1:08 PM |
I’m not going to sit in a theater until I can do it without a mask.

R32 it was a joke.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 25, 2021 2:50 PM |
Both these movies look awful.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 25, 2021 3:13 PM |
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is being released theaters-only, so Disney can't be that ready to throw in the towel.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 19, 2021 2:39 PM |
After a few months, Disney Plus shows the movies without fee. I recently saw Mulan for free—it was actually really good
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 19, 2021 2:41 PM |
Actually Disney hasn’t decided on that r39
“ Disney has just released the trailer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Asian superhero movie Shang-Chi And The Legend of The Ten Rings. And indeed, it looks like the studio is serious about releasing the first MCU movie over Labor Day weekend. No word yet if this one will be theatrical and day-and-date on Disney+ Premier like Black Widow on July 9.”
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 19, 2021 2:45 PM |
The YouTube video description on the trailer says "Only in Theaters."
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 19, 2021 2:53 PM |
I'm not going to lie here, and maybe my taste is just bad, but I think I might actually pay for Cruella. The art direction (especially the costumes) look fantastic, and I think there's something to be said for seeing Emmas Thompson and Stone trying to out-vamp each other for 2 hours.
Sorry, G.

No one is going to be comfortable going back to the area for 6 months at the earliest
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 19, 2021 3:02 PM |
Area = theater
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 19, 2021 3:02 PM |
The novelty of screaming or gasping in unison with the other audience members because of 3D technology got old very fast.
It will take YEARS for movie theaters to get customers to come back and just be at ease watching movies in movie theaters and buying snacks in the concession stands. COVID-19 and the confrontational mask / vaccine deniers ruin any public outing these days.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 19, 2021 3:19 PM |
I’m not going back to a theater until I can sit there without a mask. And I don’t know if theater chains can survive that long.
I hope the art house cinemas make it.

by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 13, 2021 6:50 PM |

Or you can pay less for an AMC subscription and see as many movies as you want, support theatres, and not even bother with Disney's shitty product if you don't want.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 13, 2021 7:00 PM |
That new Cruella movie looks like utter shit.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 13, 2021 7:14 PM |
Disney seems to have gotten really lazy in recent years. Everything is either a live version of an earlier animated classic or an alternate story of one of their classic villains.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 13, 2021 7:53 PM |
I went to the theater for the first time in over a year recently and the audience was really engaged. I think it was moreso not because the film was great but because it felt good to be back in the theater with a group of (socially distanced) people. So I know there are people like me who prefer the cinema going experience. I believe Shang-Li and The Eternals will bring many once hesitant people back to the theater.

[Quote]$30 would be a bargain if you had more than three kids who wanted to watch it.
Taking your kids to a movie theater and spending an afternoon together is quality time and an experience. Watching a movie with your kids in your own living room and on your own TV is just a normal day. I would not spend $30 on this "experience". Kids can watch a old DVD or something for free on Netflix if they need screen time at home. Better option is to tell them to go play outside. Rental price for this experience is $0. Fuck Disney.
