Andra Day should win the Oscar!

I’ve slightly modified my final assessment:

Andra Day should win the Oscar for her hauntingly fierce, transfixing, and transcendent performance as Billie Holiday in [italic]The United States vs. Billie Holiday[/italic]. Day shoots, penetrates, and burns like a red-hot laser and manages to save an unfocused and, at times, fickle film, providing and grounding it with an aching heart and soul.

Her vocal work is both eerily accurate and exquisitely sublime. ::chef’s kiss::

by Anonymousreply 1March 1, 2021 4:59 AM

She meets my requirement.

by Anonymousreply 2March 1, 2021 5:04 AM

R2 Oh stop! 😂

by Anonymousreply 3March 1, 2021 5:04 AM

She’s so fucking raw and real in this.

by Anonymousreply 4March 1, 2021 5:07 AM

I’ve always liked her since Private Practice.

by Anonymousreply 5March 1, 2021 5:22 AM

OP/R3/R4 = same person.

by Anonymousreply 6March 1, 2021 5:24 AM

And.... ?

by Anonymousreply 7March 1, 2021 5:25 AM

She's really fucking good in it, but the film is such an awful mess.

by Anonymousreply 8March 1, 2021 5:29 AM

The reviews for the film have been shit; Andra has been receiving raves.

Lee Daniels is a horrible director.

by Anonymousreply 9March 1, 2021 5:33 AM

No, that was meant for me, R7.

It's really important to try to hurt me, isn’t it, R6?

...If it’s starting all over again, the lying, the covering up, the disappearing for hours, I will not stand for it! I can't stand for it! I really can’t!

by Anonymousreply 10March 1, 2021 5:34 AM

R8 I think she saves it though. Besides, her work towers over the shit that has won in the last two decades.

She deserves Oscah!

by Anonymousreply 11March 1, 2021 5:36 AM

Even in that gif she looks so much like Eartha Kitt.

by Anonymousreply 12March 1, 2021 5:36 AM

R12 She gives Billie teas too, though.

What the fuck was Leslie Jordan doing in this movie with that hair?

by Anonymousreply 22March 1, 2021 6:39 AM

I've never heard of her.

by Anonymousreply 23March 1, 2021 6:39 AM

R21 Please refer to my hole as “cunt.”

by Anonymousreply 24March 1, 2021 6:42 AM

R22 Leslie needs to play a woman 😂

He’d be fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 25March 1, 2021 6:42 AM

It's release is similar to Lady Sings the Blues in the sense that Blues also got mostly poor to middling reviews, but they loved Diana Ross. Mediocre film, Great Performance!

by Anonymousreply 26March 1, 2021 7:44 AM

R26 Agreed!

by Anonymousreply 27March 1, 2021 3:52 PM

If the character is a singer, it always helps when the actress is able to effectively vocalize the part. When you watch Viola in "Ma Rainey" you know that voice is not hers. Even though the performance scenes are brief, it is jarring.

by Anonymousreply 28March 1, 2021 4:10 PM

Great interview.

Sublimity infinity.

by Anonymousreply 30March 2, 2021 5:06 PM

It’s strange to me that Billie Holliday isn’t discussed as a songwriter very much.

She composed Don't Explain, Fine and Mellow, God Bless the Child, Lady Sings the Blues and others.

by Anonymousreply 31March 2, 2021 7:36 PM

R31 She was brilliance incarnate.

by Anonymousreply 32March 2, 2021 7:38 PM

I just got this feeling that Day is going to win. It’ll be a way to honor Holiday as much as Day’s remarkable work.

by Anonymousreply 33March 2, 2021 7:44 PM

R31, It is a shame. I suppose her personal life and tragic ending overshadow her professional achievements.

by Anonymousreply 34March 2, 2021 7:45 PM

I'm blacker and have suffered more.

by Anonymousreply 35March 2, 2021 8:00 PM

I lent her my wig assistant (little homosexual boy)

by Anonymousreply 36March 2, 2021 9:27 PM

Over my dead body

by Anonymousreply 37March 2, 2021 10:15 PM

R37 God, I love Ross in Lady Sings the Blues. She should’ve been the first black actress to win Oscah.

Day’s win can be a nod to her great work too.

by Anonymousreply 38March 4, 2021 4:25 AM

It's a Lee Daniels film - this will be shit.

by Anonymousreply 39March 4, 2021 4:27 AM

R39 Day transcends and lifts the film.

She is going to win the Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 40March 4, 2021 4:30 AM

I heard the movie was badly received

by Anonymousreply 41March 4, 2021 4:43 AM

R41 It was but her performance has received universal praise. She also just won the Globe for Best Actress. She deserves to win.

by Anonymousreply 42March 4, 2021 4:45 AM

Jesus, those musical clips sound crappy. Joey Arias does a better Holiday; Audra McDonald does a better Holiday. Jennifer Holiday does a better....oh, never mind. And the arrangements?! Shite!

by Anonymousreply 43March 4, 2021 6:11 AM

She ain't winning no Oscar, not if Viola Davis has anything to do with it!

by Anonymousreply 44March 4, 2021 6:20 AM

OP, would you mind sending us a picture of yours while we place an order for sharp pins?

by Anonymousreply 45March 4, 2021 6:46 AM

I've never heard of her.

Poor Glennie....another loss coming up.

by Anonymousreply 46March 4, 2021 9:19 AM

R44 I'll say. If that bitch wins my Oscar I'll rip her fucking tits off through zoom.

by Anonymousreply 47March 4, 2021 9:19 AM

St V at R44, the best way to protest an upset loss would be to lift your gown and literally show the world Ma Rainey's Black Bottom if any name other than yours is called.

by Anonymousreply 48March 4, 2021 1:36 PM

Sorry I meant St V at R47, not R44

by Anonymousreply 49March 4, 2021 1:36 PM

Im glad Andra Day is good in this. I like her and I was hearing bad reviews on the film.

by Anonymousreply 50March 4, 2021 1:41 PM

Suck my cunt, Buckwheat.

No, no, no, no, no!!!! This is MY year! I'm not going to sit around and watch this Andy come lately win MY Oscar! I need to up my game and remind the voters that Miss Day only portrayed suffering on screen whereas I have actually suffered in life.

by Anonymousreply 53March 6, 2021 6:03 PM

I can see her winning as well. At the beginning, she was a long shot for even a nomination, but her performance has gained a lot of momentum. Now she has a real chance.

Lady Sings the Blues is a beloved classic in the African American community. Ross' performance is considered by many to have been criminally snubbed of the oscar.

And there's no competition. McDormand already has two. Viola has one, and Chadwick is getting all the momentum for that movie. Carey Mulligan's has fizzled. Amy Adams was never really in the race to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 54March 6, 2021 6:11 PM

R53 read R51.

by Anonymousreply 55March 6, 2021 6:12 PM

She seems like a nice enough young lady but that hospital scene wasn’t good acting.

by Anonymousreply 56March 6, 2021 6:49 PM

R56 No, it was phenomenal acting.

by Anonymousreply 57March 6, 2021 6:53 PM

Congratulations to Ms. Day for her Oscar nomination!

I hope she wins.

by Anonymousreply 58March 16, 2021 12:42 AM

Nope, Andra Day So a Conner

by Anonymousreply 59March 16, 2021 12:45 AM

R59 WTF are you saying?

by Anonymousreply 60March 16, 2021 12:52 AM

Day FOREVAH!

by Anonymousreply 61March 18, 2021 7:03 AM

She looks like Tami from the Real World

by Anonymousreply 62March 18, 2021 7:04 AM

R62 omg. Bitch!

I sort of see it. 😂

by Anonymousreply 63March 18, 2021 7:05 AM

I will cut all you nasty, ungrateful bitches who are suggesting Miss Day will win MY Oscar.

I take back what I taught you sluts before. You isn't kind, you sho ain't smart and you isn't important.

by Anonymousreply 64March 18, 2021 7:11 AM

Black actors, when they are taking on a historical figure, always act like they are giving speeches and striking a pose. Yes, I know those are important roles but they don't need to act so important.

by Anonymousreply 65March 18, 2021 7:15 AM

This chick will win.

by Anonymousreply 66March 18, 2021 8:42 AM

I can’t wait.

by Anonymousreply 67April 5, 2021 4:47 AM

She was hella good but im still rooting for carey mulligan.

by Anonymousreply 68April 5, 2021 5:10 AM

Day all fucking day.

by Anonymousreply 69April 5, 2021 5:17 AM

It could easily happen and nobody would mind, I'd feel bad for Diana Ross though -- who could've long ago been the first AA woman to win the Oscar had they just held back the movie's release one year. And she would've beaten her idol, Streisand.

by Anonymousreply 70April 5, 2021 5:27 AM

we all prayin she does win......hell of a performance, bless u andra.....

by Anonymousreply 71April 5, 2021 6:22 AM

I have a feeling she will.

by Anonymousreply 72April 5, 2021 3:34 PM

too bad the whole movie kinda sucked tho, way too down, negative and humorless....tho she was fab.

by Anonymousreply 73April 6, 2021 5:45 PM

I loved her performance in this. It wasn't a bad movie, it just took a long time to say what it did.

by Anonymousreply 74April 6, 2021 5:48 PM

Come on, mama, get it!

by Anonymousreply 75April 25, 2021 6:47 PM

She's fine, but the film itsel is awful! The damn editing is so fucked up there is no sense of time or place, and the male characters make no sense.

by Anonymousreply 76April 25, 2021 6:53 PM

Andra Day, Anzac Day?🧐

by Anonymousreply 77April 25, 2021 6:57 PM

Nah it's Mulligan's year... one hopes.

by Anonymousreply 78April 25, 2021 10:49 PM

omg she got robbed......france n not deserve it

by Anonymousreply 79April 26, 2021 3:29 AM

FRANNY won and that makes up for Andra losing!

by Anonymousreply 80April 26, 2021 3:29 AM

fRANNY and her drab dull depressed person roles.....noo thx

by Anonymousreply 81April 26, 2021 3:55 AM

R81 She was raw, gritty, riveting, and astonishing in a tour de force performance!

by Anonymousreply 82April 26, 2021 3:57 AM

That's all she wrote, boys! Just call me a three-time winner!

by Anonymousreply 83April 26, 2021 3:59 AM

Andi day showin up lookin like a hoe

by Anonymousreply 84April 26, 2021 4:03 AM

Too much titty.

by Anonymousreply 85April 26, 2021 4:11 AM

I enjoyed Andra Day's 'Purple Rain' commentary on the Oscars. As for the award, she clearly made an impact. She'll have other shots in the future.

by Anonymousreply 86April 26, 2021 4:12 AM

R85 😂

by Anonymousreply 87April 26, 2021 4:13 AM

FOUR-time Oscar winner.

by Anonymousreply 88April 26, 2021 4:13 AM

The Academy don't like no titty.

by Anonymousreply 89April 26, 2021 4:28 AM

Andra Day should have won, but I’m glad Carey “a critic said I’m not as hot as Margot Robbie, woe is me” Mulligan didn’t win, so go Frances.

by Anonymousreply 90April 26, 2021 4:38 AM

HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 91April 26, 2021 4:48 AM

She was very bitchy about Purple Rain

by Anonymousreply 92April 26, 2021 4:49 AM

And where do you keep your Oscar Miss Ross?

by Anonymousreply 93April 26, 2021 5:07 AM

I would have been fine with her winning. It was a pretty great film debut, but the movie itself wasn’t very good, despite showing some fine black men naked.

by Anonymousreply 94April 26, 2021 5:07 AM

I believe she received doggy nude on screen that’s worth a somethin

by Anonymousreply 95April 26, 2021 5:12 AM

[quote] Day shoots, penetrates, and burns like a red-hot laser

MARY!!!

by Anonymousreply 96April 26, 2021 5:16 AM

DL, you bitches gave me false hopes and led me to believe I was going to win. I lost to an ugly old woman who seems to shower only once every 2 years.

You had me worried that my big threats were actually Carey Mulligan, who looks and acts like she is 39 going on 80, and greasy ass Viola who seemed to have just risen from a deep fryer to play Ma Rainey. Why didn't y'all warn me about this Fern beeyatch?
