Which movies have the best scenery?

Beautiful landscapes, wilderness. I don't care if it's Hollywood or foreign, I want a feast for the eyes!

by Anonymousreply 92June 25, 2021 9:13 AM

The Grand Budapest Hotel!! Every shot is a feast for the eyes.

"Days of Heaven" directed by Terrence Malick - just gorgeous visually

"The Sound of Music"

"Song of Norway" - a least visually

I enjoyed the Motorcycle Diaries.

by Anonymousreply 3March 1, 2021 4:10 AM

I watched Room with a View for the umpteenth time this weekend and it wins for me.

Dersu Uzala - It's based on a memoir by a Tsarist-era Russian army officer sent to Siberia on a mapping expedition who is guided by a Goldie hunter with whom he becomes great friends. A Japanese-Soviet production directed by Kurosawa. Look for a showing of a clean print. Some of it is breathtaking and it's a great story to boot.

If you like haunting and spare desertscapes and the Southwest, Nomadland is a recent addition for scenery that does some of the heavy lifting for the movie.

King Kong (2005)

by Anonymousreply 12March 1, 2021 4:21 AM

I love those Kraut 1950s Heimatfilme. The acting is usually atrocious, storylines silly beyond belief, but the Alpine countryside looks spectacular in garish Agfacolor. That genre also helped to inspire The Sound of Music.

by Anonymousreply 13March 1, 2021 4:30 AM

Brokeback Mountain; Barry Lyndon; Out of Africa; Doctor Zhivago

Momma Mia bitches!

by Anonymousreply 15March 1, 2021 4:34 AM

R15 I do like that part with the dock and the flipper boys dancing with the violent waves splashing up and the hillside on the way to the wedding, but other than that I don’t recall much more being that interesting?

by Anonymousreply 16March 1, 2021 4:42 AM

For R5 - Criterion has released a Blu Ray of A Room with a View. Not sure if it's streaming anywhere. But agree that it's just a perfect film on pretty much every front - music, photography, acting. Merchant Ivory's greatest achievement.

Also second R2 with Days of Heaven - the story and acting are somewhat erratic (Sam Shepard at least seems period-appropriate, Richard Gere definitely does not) but it's honestly one of the most gorgeous looking films ever made. Every shot could be framed.

Hitchcock's THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY. - dark humor that takes place during a sun-filled autumn in the Vermont countryside. The fall foliage and the beautiful scenery around the village, as well as Bernard Herrmann's light-filled score, all set an idyllic tone.

Midsommar.

To Catch a Thief.

But international espion movies have great scenery. James Bond for example.

by Anonymousreply 23March 1, 2021 6:09 AM

Not a perfect film, but The Sheltering Sky is gorgeous. I wish it would get a Blu-Ray release in North America.

by Anonymousreply 24March 1, 2021 6:43 AM

Ryan's Daughter

Terrible film with spectacular scenery.

by Anonymousreply 25March 1, 2021 6:53 AM

r9, that's some of the worst aging makeup since the 1960s.

by Anonymousreply 26March 1, 2021 6:54 AM

It's not a movie, but the current remake of "All Creatures Great and Small" has absolutely gorgeous scenery, and it's a very enjoyable 7-part series (more to come eventually).

All those movies filmed on Kaua’i: “South Pacific,” “Donavan’s Reef,” and “The Descendants.” Even “Pagan Love Song.”

Seeing “South Pacific” through the years made me want to move there.

And I did.

It’s hard to beat the travelogue appeal of many of the Bond films. In my opinion these in particular have fairly smart scripts combined with great cinematography that really transports you to the locations.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE - England, Turkey, Venice

THUNDERBALL - England, France, glamorous 1960s Bahamas

YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE - Japan

OCTOPUSSY - Germany, India

by Anonymousreply 60March 2, 2021 4:00 PM

Someone mentioned Terrence Mallick. I just watched "Badlands" yesterday. I didn't like the movie that much but the scenery because of the photography is beautiful.

The film overall is a bore, but there's some great sweeping vistas in "This is Cinerama".

by Anonymousreply 61March 2, 2021 4:13 PM

Out of Africa is the first to spring to mind. The stunning scenery coupled with the sublime score and cinematography makes for a religious cinematic experience. I was only a kid when it came out but I saw it two years ago in Imax and it was amazaing.

by Anonymousreply 62March 2, 2021 4:38 PM

Oldie, Leave Her To Heaven (1945). Breathtaking Technicolor at various places in AZ and NM.

by Anonymousreply 63March 2, 2021 7:05 PM

"Can't Help Singing" starring Deanna Durbin, looking beautiful in her only color film, is maybe the first time the Grand Canyon and other National Parks were shown in color in a major motion picture, plus the musical score is by Jerome Kern and E.Y. Harburg. Leading man Robert Paige is quite purty too.

by Anonymousreply 64March 2, 2021 7:18 PM

"The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" has scenes of the quaint streets of Edinburgh...."Babe" showed much pastoral beauty (I think it was filmed in New Zealand)..."Lawrence of Arabia" showed the beauty of the desert..."The Talented Mr. Ripley" made me to long see Italy for myself, and "A River Runs Through It" made me put 'going fly fishing in Montana on my bucket list.

by Anonymousreply 66March 2, 2021 7:35 PM

The “Lord of the Rings” films directed by Peter Jackson. Shot in New Zealand - Jackson said several locations in the film were thought to be CGI but are actual stunning places in New Zealand.

On the opposite of the spectrum: “Black Narcissus” from Powell and Pressburger have eye-popping vistas of India that were all painted and filmed in London studios!

by Anonymousreply 67March 2, 2021 9:42 PM

I was going to immediately say Barry Lyndon, but on second thought I realized the film's visual beauty comes from its interior scenes.

For scenery, I'll have to go with what several have said above: The LoTR trilogy.

"Peyton Place"---I love Camden, Maine!

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"---The French Riviera, especially Nice and Villefranche!

"Zeffirelli's 'Romeo and Juliet'"---Tuscany! (Also, "Under the Tuscan Sun.")

"If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium"---Whirlwind Europe with Ian McShane!

"The World of Henry Orient"---NYC when it was livable.

And baby, don't hurt me, but many Hallmark movies have fabulous settings! E.g.:

"Mix Up in the Mediterranean"---Malta!

"Christmas in Rome."

"Paris, Wine, and Romance."

"Love, Romance, and Chocolate"---Bruges!

by Anonymousreply 71March 3, 2021 5:01 AM

Agreed, r27! Similar to the scenery in the PBS "Sanditon" (though the latter also has the coast).

Thomas Vinterberg's 2015 "Far from the Madding Crowd" had gorgeous Dorset as its setting (filmed mostly in Dorset.) As a film interpretation of Thomas Hardy's novel, it's reasonably good, and neither is Matthias Schoenaerts so bad to spend two hours with.
