They're all dead.

Such an eerie episode to witness. Apart from Larry Kramer and the two women who appear (co-host, and interviewee) they all died of AIDS.

Vito Russo, Larry Kramer... who else?

by Anonymousreply 1March 1, 2021 5:59 AM

Diego Lopez died in 1986, Charles Jurrist in 1991 and Michael Callen in 1993. Vito Russo died in 1990.

Michael Callen lived 10 years (at least) after his diagnosis.

And his invention, GLAAD, pissed on his grave by turning into TAAGL.

Bill Burke was a hottie!

I'm impressed that it's only 1983 yet these people know so much about the disease already. They wanted to fight it but had no one in their corner.

It seems that if Reagan had gotten off his his dumb ass and become an AIDS warrior- 1,000s may have survived.

They didn't die in vain though: AIDS dragged homosexuality out of the shadows.

Of course Reagan was responsible for the pain and sufffering of thousands that died from AIDS but I don’t think the cure would’ve arrived any sooner- look at how long it’s taking to eradicate Coronivirus!

The phone in your pocket is hundreds of times faster and more storage than all of NASA had in the early 80’s. It was technology and the arrival of the World Wide Web, gene sequencing, and collaboration of university, as well as public and private research that brought the cocktail of drugs in the mid 90’s that brought AIDS cases down. Even with billions in investment I don’t think it would’ve come any sooner.

The cutting edge research in Coronovirus may being an HIV cure quicker though.

Way to ignore Gay Liberation. If homosexuality were in the shadows, Anita Fucking Bryant wouldn't have had her merry way in the 1970s.

Liberating themselves from their own closets?

by Anonymousreply 9March 1, 2021 5:21 PM

R6 - that's a hard argument to make. AIDS brought out a LOT of discrimination and homophobia that took decades to turn around.

There was no turning point of acceptance and understanding of HIV and AIDS among gay men. Most straight people are either ignorant of what happened or believe that they deserved it.
