ADL Rips 'SNL' for 'Offensive' Weekend Update Joke About Israel

On Saturday's episode, "Weekend Update" co-anchor Michael Che said, "Israel is reporting that they've vaccinated half of their population. I'm going to guess it's the Jewish half."

by Anonymousreply 114March 1, 2021 1:09 PM

Sometimes offensive is funny, ya know?

by Anonymousreply 1February 23, 2021 4:10 PM

The only offense is that it’s true.

by Anonymousreply 2February 23, 2021 4:11 PM

Oy....

by Anonymousreply 3February 23, 2021 4:33 PM

"According to the Associated Press, Israel began allowing the Palestinian Authority to deliver the first coronavirus vaccines to the Gaza Strip just last week."

So, in other words, Michael Che was reporting the news.

by Anonymousreply 4February 23, 2021 4:39 PM

It is ridiculous that Israeli government should be considered above criticism.

by Anonymousreply 5February 23, 2021 5:36 PM

They have learned so much from the Shoah.

by Anonymousreply 6February 23, 2021 5:38 PM

That shit was funny. I don’t bother with SNL anymore but watched that whole Weekend Update segment due to the bellyaching over this “controversy,” and it was good. I think I might start tuning in just for Weekend Update.

by Anonymousreply 7February 23, 2021 5:39 PM

r7 Weekend Update is pretty much the only part of SNL I watch anymore
In fact, in Israel, all citizens – Jewish, Muslim, Arab and Christian, are equally eligible and have the equal opportunity to receive the anti-Covid vaccine.
Antisemitic libels are not funny. In fact, in Israel, all citizens – Jewish, Muslim, Arab and Christian, are equally eligible and have the equal opportunity to receive the anti-Covid vaccine. The priorities are health care workers of all backgrounds (including Israel’s many Arab physicians and health care workers) and the elderly of all backgrounds. Approximately 70% of Israeli Arabs over 60 have already received the vaccine.
Israel also offered the vaccine to the autonomous Palestinian Authority (“PA”) and PA President/PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, even though Israel has no obligation to do so. The Oslo accords make clear that the PA is responsible for all issues affecting the health of the PA’s citizens. The PA and Abbas adamantly rejected Israel’s extraordinary, generous humanitarian offer.
The PA also refused supplies to combat Covid delivered on the UAE’s airline because they were delivered through Israel. However, despite the PA’s refusal, Israel delivered vaccines and other supplies to combat COVID and medical training to the PA. The PA has been using the Israeli vaccines, without crediting Israel!
In addition, Israel’s Magen David Adom has been vaccinating PA citizens who hold permits to work in Israel.

So according to the source r10 is quoting, Israeli citizens must either be Jewish, Christian, Arab or Muslim? What about Buddhists? Hindus? Wiccans? Atheists? Scientologists? Why is “Arab” lumped in there with religions?

It’s all a load of horse shit.

by Anonymousreply 11February 23, 2021 6:56 PM

Che also took heat recently for his "Don't ask, don't tuck" quip RE the transgender military ban.

Weekend Update is the only thing that makes SNL watchable for me lately.

Only sad part is that it wasn't a joke. And all the defenses that use the "we vaccinate citizens" give the game away. Who is considered a citizen?

by Anonymousreply 13February 23, 2021 7:06 PM

Well, who do you think counts as an Israeli citizen, r13?

by Anonymousreply 14February 23, 2021 7:08 PM

By the standards of some of the utter bullshit out there about Israel, this is pretty minor. I dont know why they bothered to kick up a fuss about it, just drew more attention to it. If they'd ignored it the joke would have been forgotten within days. Much worse allegations are made in all seriousness about Israel and the Jewish people all the time

by Anonymousreply 15February 23, 2021 7:19 PM

Time for dumb bunny che to go.

by Anonymousreply 16February 23, 2021 7:19 PM

R4 No, he wasn’t, you idiot.

Palestinians who live in the Gaza and the West Bank are NOT citizens of Israel. Israel doesnt need to vaccinate them anymore thN the US needs to vaccinate Canada. Israel did offer the PLA vaccines and they said no.

Any and all Arabs who live in Israel ARE in fact able to and are getting vaccinated.

So, it is antisemitic of accusing Jews of NOT vaccinating Arabs when the opposite is true.

by Anonymousreply 17February 23, 2021 7:20 PM
Israel also offered the vaccine to the autonomous Palestinian Authority (“PA”) and PA President/PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, even though Israel has no obligation to do so. by Anonymousreply 18February 23, 2021 7:21 PM

What you report is factual, R17 (Palestinian refusal of Israel's offer, the different political entities and citizenships).

What's interesting is that Che's implies that Israel is half-Jewish, half-Arab, which is exactly what the most extreme supporters of Palestine would say: that there is only one sovereign between the river and the sea, Israel, whose residents are 50-50 Jewish-Arab. The formal State of Israel is more like 75-80% Jewish.

by Anonymousreply 19February 23, 2021 7:25 PM

^*Che implies

by Anonymousreply 20February 23, 2021 7:25 PM

The PA has never given a shit about its people. It only uses them to bash Israel.

by Anonymousreply 21February 23, 2021 7:32 PM

"basing the premise of the joke on factual inaccuracies and playing into an antisemitic trope in the process"

Either Israel is a theocratic ethnostate (in which case criticism or jokes about the Israeli government could potentially be considered antisemitic) or it is not (therefore criticism or jokes about the Israeli government are not antisemitic). You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Diluting the meaning of antisemitism helps no one in the long run, ESPECIALLY not Jewish people. Do you really think the average person is going to care about antisemitism a generation from now when you are having the ADL, CPMAJO and the AJC throwing a fit over a Saturday Night Live joke, organizing petitions and demanding written apologies? These "Boy who cried wolf" performances will have exact opposite effect of what was intended: people become desensitized and will eventually stop caring about being called X word.

by Anonymousreply 22February 23, 2021 8:10 PM

Remember when Jews were funny? Why not a Heidi Abramowitz joke on going to Israel for two pricks?

by Anonymousreply 23February 23, 2021 8:14 PM
Either Israel is a theocratic ethnostate (in which case criticism or jokes about the Israeli government could potentially be considered antisemitic)

It isn't a theocracy. Israel is governed by the Knesset and a prime minister.
or it is not (therefore criticism or jokes about the Israeli government are not antisemitic).

No, the government need not be a theocracy for jokes about the government or about Israel in general to be anti-semitic or to "play into an antisemitic trope." Israel's population is by majority Jewish or of Jewish ancestry. Che's "joke" implied that Israelis were treating Jewish citizens preferentially. That is not based in any facts adduced in this thread and it does, indeed, play into an anti-semitic trope.

by Anonymousreply 24February 23, 2021 8:18 PM

Bet old Che wrote it.....

by Anonymousreply 25February 23, 2021 8:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 31February 23, 2021 11:45 PM

Israel occupies and completely controls the territories. It is ridiculous to suggest that the Palestinian authority, which has no real authority nor money is responsible for everything in the territories.

Israel just doesn’t give a shit about the people who live in those territories and pretends they control their own destinies.

by Anonymousreply 32February 23, 2021 11:53 PM
Israel is one of leaders in the world with the vaccine against Co-Vid. They have done very well. Leave them alone and start doing something useful with your time.

If completely ignoring Palestinians makes you a leader in vaccination, maybe the US should just ignore all Puerto Rican and Guamanians and get a similar designation

by Anonymousreply 33February 23, 2021 11:55 PM
Israel occupies and completely controls the territories

No. This simply is not true. Gaza is controlled by Hamas. The West Bank is controlled by Israel and/or Fatah in varying degrees depending on the designation.

According the Oslo Accords, the Palestinian Authority is responsible for immunizations.

by Anonymousreply 34February 23, 2021 11:57 PM
If completely ignoring Palestinians makes you a leader in vaccination,

When you write Palestinian, do you mean Arabs living within the state of Israel? If so, they have equal rights to be immunized. As noted above
Approximately 70% of Israeli Arabs over 60 have already received the vaccine.

If you mean Arabs living in the territories, their immunizations are the responsibility of the Palestinian Authority under the Oslo Accords.

by Anonymousreply 35February 23, 2021 11:59 PM

R34, and yet Israel controls whether the vaccines even get in or out. And what money does the Palestinian authority have.

The total amount paid to incarcerated or released terrorists in 2020 was more than NIS 512m. because those who had previously been employed by the PA continue receiving their salaries while in prison, according to PA budgetary regulations.

[bold]Olmert: Abbas Never Responded to My Peace Offer[/bold]

Former prime minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday that during his tenure he offered Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas an unprecedented peace offer, based on a return to the 1967 borders and a fair demographic land arrangement which would see heavily Jewish areas in the West Bank remain under Israeli control.

"I offered a land swap, I offered a solution for Jerusalem, where the Jewish part would remain under Israeli authority and the Arab sections would be given to the jurisdiction of a Palestinian state," he told a conference at Tel Aviv University.

According to Olmert's plan, the Holy Basin would be demarcated under the rule of five different states with access available to believers of all religions. The offer was based on the agreements reached at a 2007 summit in Annapolis Maryland, Olmert said, and would be carried out in accordance with the Road Map for peace.

1. Israel has already provided free vaccinations to the non-Jews INCLUDING Arabs living in Israel including the ones in East Jerusalem (most of whom have rejected being "citizens" and instead are official residents. Nevertheless they have equal access to the vaccines.

2. The PA REJECTED offer of vaccines from Israel.

3. The PA REJECTED vaccines that were being routed THROUGH Israel.

4. Israel has now actually delivered 1000's of vaccines to Gaza health care and front line workers.

These are the actual facts and NEWS.

instead all of you Jew-Haters believe Michael Che's "joke" that they only vaccinated Jews.

From December 2020:

[bold]Palestinians: We didn't ask Israel for COVID-19 vaccine[/bold]

. . .

The official told The Jerusalem Post that the Palestinians will soon receive nearly four million Russian-made vaccines against COVID-19.

The PA, with the help of the World Health Organization, has managed to secure the vaccine from other sources, the official added, without elaborating.

Another PA Ministry of Health official said that he expected vaccinations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to begin next month. He, too, clarified that the PA has not asked Israel to supply the Palestinians with the vaccine. “We are working on our own to obtain the vaccine from a number of sources,” the official added. “We are not a department in the Israeli Defense Ministry. We have our own government and Ministry of Health, and they are making huge efforts to get the vaccine.”

[bold]Is Israel discriminating against Palestinians with vaccine?[/bold]

The Observer is wrong: Israel has vaccinated more Palestinians than any other country on earth

. . .

What about the Palestinians? First of all, Israel is providing vaccines to everyone in its health network, including Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem who have Israeli health care. Second, there are cases of non-citizens in Israel getting vaccinated by showing up at one of the mass vaccination points. This is because the mission of health professionals is to vaccinate anyone who shows up. The virus doesn’t distinguish between populations, and neither does medical care. The Guardian refers to Arab residents of east Jerusalem as Palestinians: therefore, by its own definition Israel has not excluded Palestinians.

The Palestinian Authority, a semi-autonomous government that is recognised as the state of Palestine by 139 countries administers health care to millions of its own citizens. The Guardian’s article on Israel ‘excluding’ Palestinians notes that the ‘cash-strapped Palestinian Authority, which maintains limited self-rule in the territories, is rushing to get vaccines. One official suggested, perhaps optimistically, that shots could arrive within the next two weeks… Despite the delay, the authority has not officially asked for help from Israel.’

In other words, the Guardian that asserts Palestinians were excluded goes on to admit that they were not excluded. Put it this way. The Palestinian Authority has not asked Israel to vaccinate its public. Hamas, the terror group that has run the Gaza Strip since 2006 after throwing the Palestinian Authority out, has not asked Israel for vaccinations. Ali Abed Rabbo, director-general of the Palestinian health ministry, did not tell the Guardian he wants Israel to procure vaccinations. There is a glaring inconsistency here.

In the 1930s there were around 16 million Jews in the world. Then some people did something and the Jewish population dropped by 6 million. After 75 years the population is around 15 million, 7 million of them living in Israel, about 75% of the population. But of course, it would never be said because it would be considered racist and offensive. (And the political reality is that no one cares what South Africa does.) But say the same about Jews, and suddenly it’s “funny”.
why open other countries. Expel Israel and give the country back to its citizens. End the occupation.

Fuck off, Jew-hating scum. Open a history book and if you’re American, get the fuck out of the country which was stolen.

by Anonymousreply 86February 24, 2021 9:51 AM
This is why it is antisemitic. People call out Israel without even knowing the facts because it is so easy to believe that Jews=bad.

That’s progressives for ya. They hate Jews with a passion. They see them as white privileged individuals who magically control everything. They want to starve them out of their country. History repeats itself.

by Anonymousreply 87February 24, 2021 9:53 AM

R84 And the offered the vaccine and the PA refused to accept it. Why can you NOT understand that.

by Anonymousreply 88February 24, 2021 9:54 AM

Weekend Update has made plenty of racist (toward Blacks) jokes in the past few years r81

by Anonymousreply 89February 24, 2021 9:54 AM

Don’t expect progressives to ever open up their mouths in regards to Muslim countries which they deem victims of imperialism. Fuck all the women they enslave and homosexuals they hang. Let’s focus on the big bad Jews who keep getting bombed.

by Anonymousreply 90February 24, 2021 9:55 AM

They’ve made transphobic jokes too, and not even witty ones. Guess who makes them... Che.

by Anonymousreply 91February 24, 2021 9:55 AM

"Don't ask, don't tuck" is not freakin' "transphobic," r91

by Anonymousreply 92February 24, 2021 10:01 AM

R79 I think you got my post wrong, what I said is, the success of Israel's vaccine plan (credit to its government!) reinforced the old stereotype of shrewd/cunning Jews.

by Anonymousreply 93February 24, 2021 10:03 AM

R89 And at least one person has been fired for it.

by Anonymousreply 94February 24, 2021 10:05 AM

Israeli government obstruction of vaccines to the Palestinian Authority is shameful and an act of institutional racism toward the Arab people.

by Anonymousreply 95February 24, 2021 10:07 AM
[R79] I think you got my post wrong, what I said is, the success of Israel's vaccine plan (credit to its government!) reinforced the old stereotype of shrewd/cunning Jews.

Sorry, I misread your "this is why people hate Jews (isn't it awful)" comment as "this is why people hate Jews (uh-huh)".

by Anonymousreply 96February 24, 2021 10:07 AM

R95 The only "obstruction" is in your Jew-hating little mind, Mahmoud. See R75 for details.

by Anonymousreply 97February 24, 2021 10:12 AM

The ADL can just fuck off in this case. All they’re doing is calling attention the fact that he’s right.

by Anonymousreply 98February 24, 2021 10:15 AM

R95 And how are they doing that? Oh wait, you cannot answer because you know you are wrong.

Tip of the iceberg. Expect to see more anti-Semitism under this new regime. Look at what happened in the UK.

by Anonymousreply 101February 24, 2021 11:25 AM

Especially when the Vice-President is comfortable with bigots and their bigotry.

The ADL stays in business by being "offended."

by Anonymousreply 103February 24, 2021 11:50 AM

R103, I agree. BLM, too.

by Anonymousreply 104February 24, 2021 11:56 AM

The joke was so racist it even offended racists.

by Anonymousreply 105February 24, 2021 12:00 PM
Tip of the iceberg. Expect to see more anti-Semitism under this new regime. Look at what happened in the UK.

Then expect to see the Jews respond in kind. We've had enough of your blasphemy against our God.

[italic]SCTV[/italic] was funnier.

[italic]The Carol Burnett Show[/italic] was funnier.

[italic]In Living Color[/italic] was funnier.

[italic]MAD TV[/italic] was funnier.

Even [italic]The Muppet Show[/italic] was funnier and putting a warning label on Jim Nabors constitutes homophobia. I see your race card and raise you a gay card.

by Anonymousreply 107February 24, 2021 12:04 PM

So many gay men are relaxed about anti Jewish racism. It really doesn't bother them that the anti Jewish voices the amplify hate gays even more than they hate Jews.

Most of the 6.500 workers killed in Qatar will be dark skinned people and a majority will be Muslim, but so few people who think of themselves as left wing can get upset about their deaths because they were at the hands of an oppressive Islamic regime.

It didn't stop Hitler from trying to kill us both. Gays should support Israel because Israel does more to support gays than the rest of the Middle East. In fact, one could argue homosexuality is to sex as Judaism is to religion.

by Anonymousreply 109February 24, 2021 12:07 PM
Israeli government obstruction of vaccines to the Palestinian Authority is shameful and an act of institutional racism toward the Arab people.

That is a racist statement because Arabs are white and Jews are, always have been, and always will be of color. Opposing a government run by POCs when they use retaliatory force against white supremacists makes you complicit in said white supremacy.

China kills more Muslims than Israel and you round-eyed racist ofays fucking know it.

by Anonymousreply 111February 24, 2021 12:13 PM

R1 here. In retrospect, I think two facts might have mitigated against SNL's including this joke (because on first hearing, it is funny):

1. A Black man cracking it isn't a good look, considering our current milieu of the "Jews will not replace us!" Charlottesville chants and the (now-cancelled) invitation by CPAC to that anti-Semite "Jews stole their fake religion from Black Egyptians" Pharaoh guy to speak this weekend.

2. The "too soon" rule might apply to jokes about Covid-19 and vaccines, while we're lowering flags and all.

by Anonymousreply 112February 24, 2021 4:52 PM

Datalounge loves a good Jew joke. Not so much a Muslim or trans joke though.

by Anonymousreply 113February 24, 2021 5:15 PM

Offensive jokes are Weekend Update's bread and butter.
