The reason so many Americans embrace conservatism is because the left and the right in America are basically right-wing, so it makes little difference which stance you support. I’m a liberal, but a very depressed person, with a lot of deep self-hatred and anxiety about life. I understand how attractive conservatism can be for some people. If you have no hope for the future, you start to only find joy in the past. If you don’t think that change can be good, it becomes scary and uncomfortable.

I understand that most conservatives many not be explicitly depressed, but I can sometimes detect a shade of nihilism in their arguments.

America is mostly a right wing nation with a bit of real socialists and left wingers in the middle. There are more libertarians with progressive ideas in America than actual left wingers. What you call liberal in America the whole world defines as center-right, including the Democratic Party.

Someone calling themselves “liberal” or “conservative” is insufficient. People are lazy in trying to use one word to summarize all their views. I need to know what your specific policy views are. Empty statements like “I’m a liberal because I believe in peace and love” likewise are not sufficient. Just list your views on things like illegal immigration, law and order, government assistance (welfare), foreign trade, foreign relations, first and second amendment rights, etc. That will tell the tale of what your politics are.

This theory that America is further to the right is a fantasy. Didn't Macron say we were too woke? The country as a whole is more progressive on social issues, as is the rest of the world. What is actually happening is that the two party system is breaking down and the reason is primarily economic. The Covid shutdowns and restrictions have created an even greater wealth gap that is being ignored because its effects are global. However, you still see stuff like the BLM protests which transformed into an anti capitalist demonstration in wealthier cities, the war on hedge funds, the lockdown protests, populist parties rising in popularity (another global phenomenon), and greater distrust in our media and institutions in general.
