New HBO MAX LGBT series “Generation” Trailer is Here

Surprisingly, yeah. Just not any of the leads so far.
I liked it. The teens felt more like teens than Luca Guadagnino's WE ARE WHO WE ARE.

R9 Funny but Justice Smith is completely unrelated to them

Martha Plimpton deserves better than this

First episode is not bad. But it’s downhill from there.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 12, 2021 4:21 AM |
R11 OK, if he’s not their biological child, then at least with that hair, outfits and ‘tude he’s definitely a spiritual child of Will and Jada.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 12, 2021 4:56 AM |
I think it's kind of comforting to see that, apart from technology, nothing has changed. Kids and teens are still brats acting all smart ass but still fumble around trying to figure things out on their own. Just like me when I was young.

The whole cast is ugly as sin.

That trailer was so damn tiring. I love having Gays and the Alphabets represented, but damn. That was exhausting to watch.
Though I did like the $cientology line...
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 12, 2021 6:19 AM |
It doesn’t look interesting. Didn’t they learn their lesson from LOOKING?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 12, 2021 6:35 AM |
Obnoxious. I assume this is targetted at 12 year olds cause I hope 16 year olds are too mature for this.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 12, 2021 6:38 AM |
Looks Groundbreaking---circa 2008...Justice Smith is the obligatory FemGay who is smarter than everyone and throws around "girl" before every sentence. And of course everyone "wants" him because he is 120 pounds of sexually irresistible. Even the bleached hair and crop tops are unoriginal. Yawn. Pass. I cannot wait for the horrid reviews.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 12, 2021 6:49 AM |
Nobody IRL would want to fuck Justice, esp. the hot guys.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 12, 2021 6:52 AM |
The show is from Lena Dunham....And apparently Hollywood has run out of hot guys because they cast Uly Schlesinger---who is pushing 25 and looks 30---as a 15 year old named Nathan. Not that Lena could ever be wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 12, 2021 7:03 AM |
The show is being promoted as a "modern day teenage drama". But stars two 26 year old men pretending to 11th graders!!.. The "genius" of Lena Dunham on full display!! Don't hold your breath for a Season Two.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 12, 2021 8:44 AM |
Kind of spoiler:
I like the final moments of the third episode and find them very poignant. You don't see it very often where the so-called femme guy is the hero who saves the day.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 12, 2021 9:16 AM |
R26 = He is not a "femme guy". He is FEMME EMPOWERED. And 26. But apparently too lazy to shave his odd chest hair. :)

HBO has the olds who are even starting to die off, but they haven’t caught the latest youth market and reeled them in as lifelong viewers. They are hitting young in their programs and with the new app to cultivate the next generation.

I’m surprised to see that Martha is only 50, I really thought she was in her 60s by now and should be playing grandparents not parents. Only in a review did I find out her husband is played by Sam Trammel, who is 52, but I was thinking looked early 40s in this and too young to be her husband. Martha did look pretty great btw.

Meh, plenty of people in the "real world" do want to (and do) fuck guys like Justice. A fem, but attractive guy with a nice body. I'm sure it's very difficult for him to hookup. Fucking Remy Duran is just a more masc but equal to slightly less attractive Justice and has no problem fucking his way through the gays, "straights," theydies and ladies of the world.

Love the dark humor. Especially the opening scenes, from the first three episodes, of the girl giving birth and Naomi freaking out, because she has no clue what to do (like, when she keeps trying to get water into the kiddie pool thing with her bare hands). Arianna, who says the most inappropriate things (and insists it's ok because she has two gay dads), is my favorite.
While there is plenty of teen angst drama, it doesn't take itself as seriously as, say, Euphoria, Grand Army, or We Are Who We Are.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 14, 2021 7:37 AM |
[quote] You don't see it very often where the so-called femme guy is the hero who saves the day.
There's the scene in the first episode where, at the party, Nathan leans his head on Chester's shoulder, and it's like Chester has turned so butch with confident swagger having his arm around Nathan's shoulder'n all. It mostly happens when we "see" Chester through Nathan eyes. Like, when Nathan watches Chester at the water polo match.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 14, 2021 8:21 AM |
I enjoyed the first three episodes and I enjoyed Justice Smith’s furry chest.

R54 = The show hired the best 26 year old actors they could find. The two main male actors are closer to 30 than the 15 year olds they badly portray.

Who is the Max of the app?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 15, 2021 3:38 AM |
R53 I loved that review. Though even Lawson didn't quite have the nerve to raise how these shows constantly paint the fem character as intelligent and courageous and strong and so on, whereas in reality the only thing most fem teens can quote is Drag Race. And yes, everyone finding them attractive is hilarious.
The show is co-created by a dad, a longtime Hollywood type, and his daughter, so it's all a nepotism thing.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 15, 2021 3:47 AM |
Most "Yaaasss Queeen" types are anything but deep and a font of wisdom, so true r58.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 15, 2021 3:48 AM |
R58 = Justice Smith cannot carry off the "I'm so hot everyone wants me" Queen. He isn't even hot. And when I saw the trailer I clearly knew he was supposed to be a high school student but he cannot ever pull that off. He looks exactly his age (25). He cannot even groom..
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 15, 2021 3:51 AM |
Just be glad we have Justice in the part and not Jaden, imagine how insufferable he’d be and thank your lucky stars for this boy instead.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 15, 2021 3:54 AM |
r43 remy has a big dick and is a 'Dom top' (eyeroll) who will litterally fuck anything as he is a narcissist - so yeah, he gets ass and pussy all the time. And while he is actually naturally quite fem which he tries to hide (unless its for woke points on twitter), he isnt swishing around like justice's character is. That also makes a big difference.
Anyway I get over 'queer' shows written by women. Its too preachy and 'empower fem gays, but demonise cis gay men as problematic' and female characters 'im sooooooo qweeeeer even though I have a boyfriend uWu'. Push bi shit also which is just tiresome.
Woman really dont understand gay men, despite at times feeling like they want to skin us and live as us ( a la gottmik of RPDR fame)
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 15, 2021 4:26 AM |
I agree about women writing gay male characters, r62. Very few really know how to do it properly. There are some, though. Not on this show, however.
One mistake a lot of women writers make to to write gay men as if they are women.

Uly Schlesinger is obviously gay, right? Does he play gay on the show?

He has a septum piercing so I can only assume he identifies as LGBTQIA++LMNOPQRS.
His character is bi.

I have enjoyed it so far (and I hated “We Are Who We Are”.). This one made me laugh several times. Martha Plimpton is a hoot!
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 15, 2021 5:34 AM |
R63 From what I gather from one of the reviews, the father in this father/daughter writing team is gay and has a partner, so especially the Black girl being super cunty must be based a lot on her or her from a certain phase of her oh so brief life.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 15, 2021 12:04 PM |
Most of you will hate this, but it’s interesting that Justice originally went in and read for the part of the high school counselor not the student and the part was originally for a white person. I still have no idea when this show actually airs or the release schedule of HBO Max programs???

It airs on Thursdays.

I read this in a review and completely agree:
"The use of technology — via Instagram, Snapchat, porn, and texting — is one of the show’s stronger points, which is the least a show about Gen Z should get right. So much of the show happens over text that you’d miss a lot if you looked away for a second, which certainly feels authentic to the way we live now but doesn’t exactly make for compelling television."
All of that really is the way people live today - people live on their phones. But, phone sequences are just oh so boring on television.

I just want to say how much I’ve been loving HBO/HBO Max. They got my attention during Game of Thrones, then Chernobyl, and my favorite guilty pleasures, Euphoria and Succession. We Are Who We Are was a weird interesting show shot in Italy. Then I had Industry which felt like a live letter to London. Made me miss that city so much.
HBO/HBO Max has constantly left me entertained. It’s one streaming service I’m happy to pay for.
I’m also loving how much gay content they squeeze into these shows. I have no idea who’s running HBO but they are going balls to the wall on this. The new generation is going to be flush with so much inclusive content. At first I rolled my eyes but now I’m just sincerely proud to see more than one quality gay adjacent show. HBO Max alone has dropped about 3 in 2020 alone. We went from barely getting a show like Looking off the ground to one gay show after another. I know they may not call themselves gay but compared to what we had 5-10 years ago, this is some progress.
I’ll check this out this weekend. Thanks OP!

I thought I would loathe this show and watched it almost as a dare. Two episodes in? I really like it! It completely fucks with woke culture, mocks it openly, but still takes it seriously somehow. Like the kids totally use it to just be assholes, but they also really are cool with what we would have labeled the freaks and geeks.
(The ennui the kids feel during the active shooter drill was also brilliant.)
by Anonymous | reply 95 | March 22, 2021 6:40 AM |
It is funny how hard the PR team is pushing Justice as some brilliant acting phenom when his credits so far include Jurassic Park movies (sequels or spin offs I think), Pokeman TV and lots of short films - not exactly on the academy awards fast track. He has given several interviews where he comes across as someone who is trying very hard to be profound but really just rattles off banalaties - the "I never came out because I was never in" is a) an aphorism older than he is and b) is not true in his case - he was fine with having stories about him dating girls in the teen celebrity rags and it took a BLM protest to prompt him to make an IG post about him being black and queer. Although he denied it in a Daily Beast interview, he probably was motivated more by the speculation he would have and questions he would face promoting this role. And of course, queer can mean anything or nothing although at least he is dating a guy now (who knows if they are still together because he still avoids the matter entirely in his SM presence - though he wasn't nearly as mum on the matter when he was dating a girl as recently as 2 yrs ago (they made their hetero relationship IG official) Finally, after making such a big deal about being "out" he then falls back on the tired hollywood trope about actors absolute right to closet themselves and some inalieable right to privacy. Can't have it both ways....
by Anonymous | reply 96 | March 26, 2021 9:26 AM |
The show is getting worse as it goes along. The trappings are supposed to be provocative -- out and proud teens, bisexuality, etc. -- but the actual stories feel tired and familiar. Maybe that's the point?
by Anonymous | reply 97 | March 26, 2021 12:06 PM |
r98 The last 10 minutes of the last episode was not a good sign - Justin character went from a supposed sophistication to the worst version of the smitten teen who thinks that he and his guidance counselor were destined for eternal bliss nevermind the statutory rape and the borderline psychotic grindr stalking. Then he pulls the fire alarm and whales like a wounded animal because bitches be crazy amirt? The worst cliches of tv teen dramedy with double the banality of the worst cliche of gay tv teen dramedy - guess having a teen girl as a co-writer has some downsides but at least they got the woke vocabulary right.
I was actually starting to like the show and hope the writers surprise us with clever solutions to the seemingly unavoidable train wreck coming. Or it could be a series that literally jumps the shark midway through the first (and most likely only) season.
PS - even if it crashes and burns it will still be better than Lucas plotless HBO wet dream that made me realize finally that Luca is a hack who makes pretty pictures with no soul.

I assumed this past Friday's episode was the season finale, but apparently the season is broken up in two parts so it was anti-climatic, though still enjoyable. No date yet for when the last eight episodes will air.

You’ve clearly never seen this show and have no clue what you’re talking about. You’re a troll, but honestly this is one of the most pro-gay shows right now.
The main character is gay. A main character is a lesbian. A main character has gay dads. A main character is a male-leaning bisexual (or possibly gay himself). A main character is a bisexual woman. The guidance counselor is gay. They just introduced another new gay boy and potential love interest for the gay main character.
It doesn’t get more pro-gay than that.

"The character who got the girl pregnant is a trans man." - Uhm, and how did that happen, r120, since transman don't actually produce sperm and therefore can't impregnate anyone?

It is getting better, the actors seem to have found their character’s voice.

Sam Trammel has aged deliciously, I wonder if he still looks as good naked as he did in Trueblood.

I should have wrote the actor is a transman (biologically born female) playing cis male.
The show is making a valiant effort in keeping Sam involved through his counseling of Riley but without the Chester storyline, Sam serves no purpose. Luckily all the other adults are interesting. I love Greta's aunt and Arianna's dads.

How did that happen, r131? Trans complain when "cis" people play "trans" characters. Surely they should also be opposed to trans people playing "cis" characters.

So glad that Justice Smith didn't shave for the role. Give me that hairy body.
Loved the series and I hope it gets renewed.

So, they basically pulled a Love, Victor ending here too?
by Anonymous | reply 136 | July 8, 2021 9:18 PM |
So who showed up for Chester at the end?
by Anonymous | reply 138 | July 10, 2021 8:21 PM |
I assume it's Sam the counselor.

After reading this thread (and replying at r221) I decided to watch before it’s gone from HBO Max. It’s such a letdown from the book, but it really does have some good scenes. I never thought about it, but the poster above is correct…the music is wrong. There should have been more of that KROQ music. The Bangles song is awesome, though, and even Goin’ Back to Cali by LL Cool J works.

Let me guess, r140 - the comment was meant for the Less Than Zero thread?

R139
That’s what I thought too, because how would Nathan or Bo know he’s up there? Unless I missed something.

Damn that actually sucks. It was actually a good show and I enjoyed the gay representation.

I expected its cancellation but still hate the news.
