This is what happens in very conservative families when teens can't talk to their parents, and the appearance of being a Christian is more important than actually living the beliefs they preach.

A family friend gave birth in a bathtub and hid in her apartment for days before seeking medical care. The hospital social worker had to call her parents to let them know she had given birth, because she was terrified. She was in her early 20s and no longer living at home, but ashamed and frightened of her parents to that degree.

Growing up in a very pro-life environment, I know of many families who took their daughters out of town for abortions.

There is no excuse for this level of depravity, though.

I feel for this kid and the other actually. They were likely raised in a pro-life, abstinence only, flag waving, gun filled environment and given no tools at all to deal with real life. It used to be very common for young girls to try to hide their pregnancy and then kill or abandon the baby in Ireland when my parents were growing up there. Having a baby out of wedlock was a 'crime' worse than murder in that culture. It is still the same in parts of the world and sadly parts of Christian America. Very, very sad situation and one where I think this boy could be rehabilitated and shouldn't be thrown in to prison for life.

I understand all the arguments about being raised in very religious and conservative homes, and I agree. I also agree this kid should "pay for his crime". Sadly, our penal system is not at all rehabilitative but rather punitive. What this kid needs is some counseling, but that does not absolve him for what he did. I also don't think this case is that isolated, it's just one where they got caught and it became public.

I'm R6 and my heart does go out to these kids (that's what they are). I hope the right thing will be done for all concerned.

Sex ed should be taught in schools. The courses should be taught automatically during gym class, with no permission slip signature required from parents. Most kids at that age have already watched porn online, and they know the mechanics of sex, but they need to know about the consequences (pregnancy, disease). This education should also include diversity training, wherein students are taught about the immorality and legalities of rape and sexual harassment and are taught that it's wrong to bully or discriminate against people who are not straight. Any parent who doesn't like it can withdraw their kid from school completely.

High schools should distribute birth control free to all students who request it. (Note: this means that schools shouldn't encourage kids to have sex. But they should give out free birth control to those kids who have decided already to have sex.) If your high school kid is dating, then he or she is most likely having sex. What would be worse: finding out your kid is having sex with birth control...or finding out your kid is having sex and is going to be a parent before graduating?

If a teen does fall pregnant, then a social worker should be assigned to inform the teen of all the available options, including abortion, adoption, and keeping/raising the child. The social worker should allow the teen to make the best decision for herself without the influence of her parents.

He's a boy, a white boy, he'd have been forgiven, and everyone around him would have blamed the girl for being a "slut" and for having "tempted him". It's the girl whose story breaks my heart, apparently she was so afraid of her parents that she hid the pregnancy and gave birth in a bathtub, and then her boyfriend murdered the baby. I hope to fucking God social services has taken her someplace safe, because where she is she's surrounded by monsters and abuse.

R55--I got the impression the girl didn't have plans for flushing the baby down the toilet, that she thought the child would go on and be adopted, and I could see her wanting to give the child a name. The boy, though, just saw it as an inconvenience. I didn't get the impression he had anything to do with the naming. (I could imagine a particularly sick scenario where the kids disagreed on the name and the boy insisted on naming the child.)
