Stimulus check update: Biden to unveil plan for $1,400 payments; unemployment extension
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 20, 2021 6:07 PM |
No no no! I want $2000! He could at least ask for $2000 and let them negotiate down to $1400!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 14, 2021 8:50 PM |
They're already talking about a second stimulus check and I still haven't gotten my second
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 14, 2021 8:50 PM |
They're already talking about a *third stimulus check and I still haven't gotten my second
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 14, 2021 8:51 PM |
R1 I’m with you. The $600 was an insult and they must bump it up to $2,000 now.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 14, 2021 8:55 PM |
If any of you freepers feel this is wrong because of radical left wing socialism, please return it back to the government.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 14, 2021 8:57 PM |
R1 Did you get $600 recently? 600 + 1400 = 2000
R3 Ditto. Mine allegedly was mailed on Putsch Day last week.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 14, 2021 8:58 PM |
That's it Joe. Go full out Roosevelt, you have a once in a century chance here and the majority of people all over the country support left wing economics, it's the social issues dividing us.
Also nice to see some of you also qualify for the checks. Sometimes it seems like everyone on DL earns 400K and I'm the poor relation!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 14, 2021 9:00 PM |
R6 sorry you didn’t get yours yet. But wouldn’t you rather have $2,400 in the end? Some countries have been sending $2,000 every month!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 14, 2021 9:02 PM |
$2,600
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 14, 2021 9:03 PM |
It seems this $1,400 will be in addition to the $600 already disbursed or still in the process of being distributed, bringing the second stimulus amount to $2,000 total per individual.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 14, 2021 9:03 PM |
It’s better than nothing, but compared to many countries, it’s ridiculously insufficient.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 14, 2021 9:11 PM |
It's being said that he will have a hard time getting it through. I don't understand why.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 14, 2021 9:15 PM |
The American government is a joke

Yes, the problem is that his messaging (and the media's) wasn't entirely clear.
From articles commenting on 2,000 checks after people had already received their 600, from his own tweets to him standing on stage and promising "2,000" checks if we won Georgia.
He should have just said, "$1,400" checks in addition to the 600 dollars but he didn't.
We're a long from from VP Kamala Harris arguing for retroactive UBI payments back to March to giving college students a break on their loans (which he may do but still isn't in his plan.) They can't backtrack this quickly or people won't forget it come mid-terms.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 14, 2021 9:42 PM |
R14 agreed. He promised $2,000 for GA wins. We came through, now cough up.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 14, 2021 9:49 PM |
Can this pass? This past Sunday, Manchin was complaining "we simply can't afford to be handing our money."
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 14, 2021 10:04 PM |
[quote] "we simply can't afford to be handing our money."
And yet, it is astounding how much money they can afford to hand out for Big Corporate bailouts/military/etc.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 14, 2021 10:10 PM |
To those complaining that other countries are giving more, remember how many people we have in this country. If the US gave every eligible individual $2000.00/mo the country would be in bankruptcy in just a few months. They can't just run out and print more money.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 14, 2021 10:16 PM |
Manchin walked his comment back the next day after the stock market took a major hit mainly because of his statement the previous day.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 14, 2021 10:19 PM |
R18. They can and do when it benefits corporations and the military.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 14, 2021 10:24 PM |
Yes R20, but to do it all would be financially unfeasible. Hopefully Pres. Biden will take a stronger hand to all the money we hand out to foreign countries and help Americans first.

His remarks just now was so moving. It was good of him to have Harris out there with him. He spoke from the heart and he meant it. It’s just such an amazing change. I know he can’t fix it overnight and the Democrats can’t fix it overnight but – thank God.

by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 15, 2021 1:50 AM |
He keeps talking about all these manufacturing jobs. What industries does he think will provide them? Does he propose that these businesses operate tax-free to make it worth giving up all that dirt cheap labor in China and God knows where else?
I liked a lot of his speech but this part struck me as the equivalent of Trump prattling on about bringing coal back in 2016, and we know how that turned out. Plus the "everyone pays their fair share" of taxes was something Obama said multiple times and nothing happened in that direction.

They absolutely will, nobody remembers anything. People will be saying the coup wasn't that big of a deal by the midterms, that's just how American are.

They're saying this NOW.

Fair enough, R32. Those people generally have an agenda, i.e. they're GOPers who want to save the party. In a couple years we'll have everyday people saying it wasn't that big of a deal.

The larger US population gives us a larger tax base. If we actually had an equitable tax system we’d have more than enough money to go around. As Robert Reich observed, “America's billionaires could give everybody in the country a $3,000 stimulus check and still be richer than they were before the pandemic.”

Actually they can print more money.
That said, the whole point of the $2000 is to stimulate the economy. Once people start spending, it will restart businesses and jobs etc and the economy will move again.

[quote]Well, they *did* say the $600 was "a down payment".
He did say that once, and then he neglected to say it several other times. So did the Georgia candidates. So did the VP Elect. Sometimes they said it. Sometimes they didn't. You can bet your ass the last time he spoke he said "total" because he likely learned that people were confused. So many people are bickering over it because it wasn't clear.
[quote]They absolutely will, nobody remembers anything. People will be saying the coup wasn't that big of a deal by the midterms, that's just how American are.
We're in a climate where the other side will take any little ole' thing and use it to campaign against us. Hillary said "deplorable" once and we've heard about it for years. Any candidate that urged for the defunding of police who is up for election in the mid-terms will have that thrown back at them. Hell, even if they didn't that will come back to haunt them. I do not doubt that in this environment any mistake Biden or the Democrats make (real or perceived) will be used as ammunition against them at some point.
We don't need to remember, they will remind everyone until the Democrats learn how to deal with these kinds of attacks.

[quote] Bitch, if the IRS is cutting you a check, you’ve paid taxes.
Not true in all cases. The vast majority of people whose only income is social security/SSI or SSDI or all people whose only income is from welfare do not pay taxes on that income, and they get a check.

Yes and I need my 2k now.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 20, 2021 5:58 PM |
my mother has been screwed TWICE now on the 2 checks.... and why? because her 2019 taxes were based on quote "income" that she received when she cashed out my father who passed away in late 2018 annuities.... she got taxed on them and then the government claims that they are "income" and so since it was more than 75 thousand dollars, she only got around 600 dollars of that 1200 1st check... and NOW? because she hasn't yet done her taxes for 2021 (FOR THE YEAR OF 2020), they based her income on what her quote "income" (the cashed out annuities) from 2019 (for the year 2018) as her STILL CURRENT EVERY YEAR income! so consequently instead of 600 dollars, she got a grand total of 57 dollars! as if she is making that much money every year as her regular income, closing out my father's annuities! and it's considered income, when in REALITY? with her social security and my father's little pension she is making not even 2000 a month!...
talk about ripped off and ridiculous!....
