Serious question related to r6. Under what circumstances can someone be stripped of citizenship? I assume pledging allegiance to a foreign power or deliberately destroying one's passport and renouncing American citizenship would do it. But what about someone like eg Robert Hanssen (FBI agent who acted as a double agent for many years and sold secrets to the Soviets/Russian), who (I assume) is still considered an American citizen and treated as such in courts of law?

Their formative years were during the Republican attacks on the Clintons and the early days of far-right radio propaganda. There was a whole slew of "anti-politically correct" entertainment when they were kids, not just Maher but The Man Show and Win Ben Stein's Money and several Adult Swim cartoon shows, South Park, a lot of the Loveline stuff (which people may not have noticed at the time but in retrospect is pretty obvious), and a bunch of comedians.

A lot of GenXers and older Millennials really bought into the "being cool means being contrarian and edgy" mythos, and that's part of why we're here today.

R14, it’s not considered a good idea to give the government broad powers to remove citizenship, it would become just another way for the government to abuse and terrorize people. Currently the only way a person may involuntarily lose their citizenship is by committing an act of treason. (Treason, I believe, is a term defined in the U.S. Constitution).
