Apparently only in the past few days have people entering the capitol been required to go through a metal detector? Really? I remember when I visited DC in the 90s. They had those installed at all the Smithsonian museums and all the monuments.

For publicly accessible areas, there have been metal detectors for at least 30 years. The public has to pass through metal detectors. Members of Congress are permitted to pass the metal detectors with their Congressional ID and also carry in the Capitol building, but not in the chambers.
That’s where the new metal detectors have been set up.
