This looks incredible. If Lee Daniels is back in form, could this be a best picture candidate? From the previews alone, If the previews are anything to go by, Andra Day will be a serious Oscar contender.

After seeing Audra McDonald's performance in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill on HBO, I don't know if I can watch another Billie impression.

The Prada-designed costumes are gorgeous. I saw Andra perform in a small club in LA a few years ago and she's the real deal. Funny, sweet, and an incredible voice. Vogue has a lovely editorial of the designs but I am not allowed to post them here for some reason.

I need this movie NOW. Perfect night for it, too.

I'm actually shocked. This looks like a Lee Daniels film that I can watch all the way through and enjoy. It will be a first for me.

He always thought of himself as the Black Almodovar, and like Almodovar who also went through his his campy/trashy/sensationalistic phase while finally moving more into more artistry territory, it looks like Lee Daniels is doing the same. I say bravo. He saw Barry Jenkins' success with Moonlight and he'll be damned if Jenkins becomes the first African American (as well as gay) man to win Best Director.

Andra Day is definitely getting an Oscar nomination (probably the only nomination for the film other than the costume designer). Even in the negative reviews, she's singled out as the best thing about the movie.

It's Lee Daniels and Suzan-Lori Parks that's getting the bulk of the negative coverage.

This movie is BAD. Not good-bad, just bad. And it makes LADY SINGS THE BLUES look like a documentary.

She looks like Eartha Kitt in the commercials (and in the OP's photo). That may be confusing for gay viewers.

Her performance is very good and she sounds like Billy Holliday but the movie itself is a hot mess. Just bad. needed different editing and a different script.

Well, it's not a bio film at all. It is as the title states. It's all about the criminal US government goons who were more criminal than she attempting to destroy her utterly for simply bringing light to yet another crime these same US government goons sought to suppress the truth of it at all costs.. Some things never change.

Andra Day IS AMAZING. I loved Viola in Ma Rainey but her portrayal of Holiday is deep and raw.
