Rio Grande Valley:
Starr County (pop. 60,968) has long been a strongly Democratic county but suffers from low voter turnout with only approximately twenty percent of its residents voting. No Republican has won the county for president since incumbent Benjamin Harrison in 1892 – as of 2020 Starr has the longest streak of voting for Democrats in the entire country.
Hidalgo County (pop. 774,769; McAllen) tends to vote for the Democratic Party, although there is representation of the Republican Party in some of the offices that affect the county. Hidalgo County is represented by three Democratic Representatives in the U.S. House. In the 2012 presidential election, 70.4% of the voters voted for Barack Obama while 28.6% voted for Mitt Romney. The last time Hidalgo County voted Republican was in the 1972 presidential election when Richard Nixon won over 55% of the votes. In the 2020 Presidential election, Hidalgo County saw a significant shift to the Republican Party with Donald Trump increasing the Republican vote from 27.9% in 2016 to 40.9%. However, as an urban county, the shift was not as large as nearby less densely populated counties.
Willacy County (pop. 22,134), like most majority-Hispanic counties in the Rio Grande Valley, is a staunchly Democratic county. The last Republican to win the county was Richard Nixon in 1972.
Cameron County (pop. 406,220; Brownsville) leans toward the Democratic Party in presidential elections. The last Republican to win the county was George W. Bush in 2004. Donald Trump's 2016 showing of 32.0% was the lowest received by a Republican candidate in the county since Alf Landon in 1936. However in 2020, Trump's performance of 43% was the best for a Republican in the county since 2004.

by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 10, 2021 8:58 PM |
R32, whoever signed off on this rally should pull the permit for it.
BTW, at the Georgia rally held just before the Tuesday election, Trump threatened to "do a number" on Kelly Loeffler if she didn't support his challenge to the results of the Presidential election. Apparently, he was going to verbally attack her in front of the crowd if she did not do what he wanted, and then, of course, who knows what would have happened. That's where his head has been at this week.

It's code for his followers to up the ante and get more violent. It's not like Don is going to just quit this shit. Why should he? All but a few elected Republicans are backing him and giving him the OK to keep going. The head of the FBI is nowhere to be found after an armed insurrection. Where is Chris Wray? Where he's always been- up Trump's ass.
Republicans hate democracy. They want a one-party state. They want the coup to succeed. People have been screaming this for years and the media wouldn't listen and elected Democrats wouldn't listen. I honestly don't know what more to do. Nobody will take this seriously.

I wouldn't doubt that Rudy Giuliani was behind the booking of this latest shit show. He convinced Trump that the Alamo in Texas would be the perfect spot for a rally...and then proceeded to goof it up by booking Alamo, Texas, all 7.51 square miles of it. Unlike last time, I don't think there's even a conveniently located porn shop within the city limits. Sad.

San Antonio is actually bluer than rural Texas! It's in a very cosmopolitan area. When I toured the Alamo, the tour guide was a liberal explaining how evangelicals used to approve of abortion in the 19th century and how Sam Houston loved the Native Americans.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 10, 2021 10:17 PM |
There seems to be confusion. Alamo itself is a town on Rte. 2, near the Mexican border. The Alamo, where the last stand occurred, is in San Antonio, north of Alamo. If Rudy Giuliani took care of setting this up, it could be either one, or an Alamo Rent-A-Car, anywhere in Texas.

After Trump gave a wink and a nod to assassinate Pence and Pelosi, he is stirring up his followers in rallies, especially since they don’t have the smoke signals working yet, in hopes some will get riled up enough to follow through between now and Jan. 20. If and when that happens, I’m sure he will declare martial law and elect himself president without term limits.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | January 11, 2021 12:35 AM |
I bet y'all are right, that this is another Trump booking mistake. Trump probably wanted to make a "last stand" speech at THE Alamo, and, instead, his people are sending him to Alamo, Texas.

He took an oath and was hired to serve and protect ALL of us. He is openly hateful to at least 50% of the entire country, plus he has invalidated and aggressively scorned various members of Congress for years on end, just treating them like garbage who don't deserve to live. Like the Squad ("Send Her Back! Send Her Back!"), Nancy and Chuck, and countless others. I mean this is the tip of the iceberg. No one checked him, though Pelosi and Adam Schiff valiantly tried.

“But did you know that he also said that the president, following the capitol incident, left DC on a “Doomsday” aircraft (used for communications in the event of a nuclear war) with his family and was in Abilene, TX. This aircraft was confirmed by both flight trackers and eyes on the ground.”

Here are some extreme thoughts to amuse ourselves:
I wonder if he plans to rally the governors of the southern states to refuse to accept Biden’s victory and to set up a separate presidency in the south? If not, why did he take the doomsday plane with him?
Or is he planning a strike against Iran? Iran is not known to officially possess missiles with enough range to reach the US, but they may have a secret missile program, and Texas is further than DC from Iran — in fact over 1,000 miles further.

by Anonymous | reply 105 | January 11, 2021 5:54 AM |
"The Alamo" is definitely a symbolic dog whistle for Trump's army of murderous lunatics. I think R104 hit the nail on the head. Trump is envisioning another insurrection (but one armed to the teeth this time) in DC and throughout the state capitals and that the great South of yore will rise up to defend him and set up a remote and defensible seat of power for him at the sphincter of Texas. And if things go south, hell have himself and a chosen few whisked away south of the border. But if things go his way, he'll return to DC as the resurrected Führer.
Or else he'll be back in DC Tuesday evening in time for his evening Happy Meal. Coin toss.

Our political divide isn't geographical in the same way it was in the mid 1800s. It's rural vs urban, not North vs South, and "Southern states" include purple or blue Texas, Georgia and Virginia, and excludes red Idaho, the Dakota, Ohio, etc.
My personal suspicion is that he's hoping to inflame the base enough to cause trouble on Inauguration Day. I don't think he believes he'll still be in office anymore, but is instead looking for revenge.

Remember that the QAnoners said on the night of the insurrection that Trump was secretly in a military installation in Texas planning the next phase of the coup.
That's another reason that he's going to Texas, I'm sure of it.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | January 11, 2021 7:17 AM |
Please clarify, R113: Are you suggesting that QAnoners are correct about what Trump is doing and why he is doing it, or are you suggesting that, by going to Texas, Trump is stringing them along, encouraging belief in something that isn't true, factually speaking?
by Anonymous | reply 114 | January 11, 2021 7:26 AM |
[quote]If that GOP memo is accurate, why would Trump leave Washington on a Doomsday plane vs. AF One?
R107, since the statement was attributed to Lin Wood, who is certifiably batshit insane, as is the entire site linked by R100, there's no need to wonder anything about it.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | January 11, 2021 7:34 AM |
The source of the "Trump took the Doomsday plane to Abilene" is Lunatic Lin Wood. At this point, Trump will scarcely be able to take a step outside the WH without the planet immediately being alerted about it. He'll definitely be heading to Texas on Tuesday, though. On that day, the world will hold its breath.

And has been joked about above, it's a given that the organizers of this event thought The Alamo is in Alamo.

Did you make it its own thread to further sow doubt about its authenticity? Or to be sure the maximum number of people saw it and were either scared or panicked by it?

JFC r209, stop beating a dead horse when we are in madness right now. R241: Are you sure it wasn't Alamo Massage? That is the only way Dump is going to finish his term with a happy ending.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | January 12, 2021 5:37 PM |
R255 I wish/think that all reports should describe these people as "Trump insurrectionists" - they are not just protestors.
by Anonymous | reply 256 | January 12, 2021 6:03 PM |
The people in Austin say they don't support what happened at the Capitol last week. Mmm hmm, I'm sure.

Terrorist Trump is scheduled to make his grand (dragon) entrance in Texas at 3 PM EST.

I am really not looking forward to this.

Opening Day of the Texas legislature is always trouble - you never know what those asshats will be up to - and I'm talking about the legislators

I really hope Kelly O'Donnell screams out: "And who paid for this wall?!?!"

Posting this is the original thread. Trump is in Alamo, Texas

Trump's hair is looking more white, less yellow.
SAD!
by Anonymous | reply 266 | January 12, 2021 7:07 PM |
FBI and DOJ are having a competing press conference. They're trying desperately to subvert Trump's message today.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | January 12, 2021 7:09 PM |
r266, you realize that's by choice.
His hair has never ever been naturally yellow, and was last naturally light brown twenty-five years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 268 | January 12, 2021 7:09 PM |
[quote]How do you send to the FBI?
The guy at their press conference just gave a website for this, fbi.gov/uscapitol.
Thinking parTICularly of Datalounge, he made sure to note that it's capitol with an o.

Even Fox News is caring the DOJ presser. Barr replacement Jeffrey Rosen appears to be a no show.

God he's disgusting.

by Anonymous | reply 274 | January 12, 2021 7:33 PM |
The more inflammatory he is, the more he's gambling that he'll harden more support than he'll lose.

Whining about how Joe Biden mustn't take the wall down and how the 25th will come back to haunt Joe. Sure, Jan.

FBI/DOJ press conference is over now too
by Anonymous | reply 277 | January 12, 2021 7:38 PM |
If Biden couldn't serve anymore he'd resign, because he's not a dimwitted cotton-candy-haired piece of shit like Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 278 | January 12, 2021 7:38 PM |
I'm still watching it r277. They're taking questions now.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | January 12, 2021 7:39 PM |
It's definitely over, R279. They literally "disconnected." I think it was planned to do so immediately after Trump was done.
by Anonymous | reply 280 | January 12, 2021 7:43 PM |
How many people were at Dump’s event? Like twelve?
by Anonymous | reply 281 | January 12, 2021 7:47 PM |
Yeah, I was watching online and it literally cut off 10 sec after I finished typing @r279.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | January 12, 2021 7:48 PM |
It pisses me off that Trump was still able to get away with a few thinly veiled threats against President-elect Biden today.
"Be careful what you wish for..."
by Anonymous | reply 283 | January 12, 2021 7:59 PM |
As far as I could tell Trump's speech was an obsessive listing of his alleged achievements in border security. He's just rebooting his political brand, going back in the end to the beginning when he came down the escalator promising to build the wall in the first place. And there it was behind him, as obviously flimsy and incomplete as he himself is.
by Anonymous | reply 284 | January 12, 2021 7:59 PM |
Exactly, R84. If that's what Temp calls a "last stand," Davey Crockett is having himself a good chuckle."
by Anonymous | reply 285 | January 12, 2021 8:02 PM |
* R284. Sorry.
by Anonymous | reply 286 | January 12, 2021 8:02 PM |
I have not ratched it, but am curious about his demeanor. Does he seem scared?
by Anonymous | reply 287 | January 12, 2021 8:03 PM |
His expensive wall is so "secure" that they still have to put fugly concertina wire on top of it... lol!
by Anonymous | reply 288 | January 12, 2021 8:07 PM |
He is a spectacular failure at everything.
by Anonymous | reply 289 | January 12, 2021 8:08 PM |
But the unfinished state of the wall, visible behind him through the whole speech, sent his base the message that there's unfinished work, that either Trump or some Trumpist successor needs to be raised up.

Obscene expense for something so ineffectual and ugly. It was Steve Bannon that got him obsessed with immigrants back in 2016, hoping to tap into the same kind of hate that resulted in the rape of the Capitol.
It worked, but they still needed Russian help to push them over the top.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | January 12, 2021 11:06 PM |
Granted I've had MSNBC or CNN on all day, but I've seen almost no footage of the event at the wall. Thrilled to see at least these two networks are ignoring his visit. Has there been much coverage elsewhere?
Of course, the event has also been eclipsed by his impeachment and the growing number of Repugs committing to impeach.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | January 12, 2021 11:17 PM |
All networks, including Fox, focused on the FBI/DOJ presser. As far as I can tell, the only "major" network that covered the Alamo fiasco in real time was OAN.
