Dump is DONE - Part 2

First thread below.

The fallout from this - the investigations into and filing of criminal charges against the Trumps, the MAGA people and Proud Boys, the Republican Party, and the law enforcement that colluded - is going to reverberate for years.

If you think this is over and that it’s going away, or will be deflected from or spun, you are dead wrong. This is a long game with a gradual and then sudden buildup. Being a Trumper is going to be akin to being a Nazi.

by Anonymousreply 9January 7, 2021 4:34 PM

A few weeks ago I responded to a thread stating that even though I think Trump is a criminal, I did not want to see him prosecuted for the good of our nation.

I have since reconsidered my view based on his treasonous behavior yesterday. Trump has destroyed whatever respect and credibility this great nation once had. I am ashamed of what the world thinks of us now. I still have trouble comprehending how we got this point.

Just for moment think about how our founding fathers would feel after witnessing Trump destroy the nation they fought so hard to establish that was built on democracy and the will of the people.

by Anonymousreply 10January 7, 2021 4:36 PM

Trump thought he could do incite people to do criminal acts and that he could just use blanket pardons for himself and his enablers as a "get out of jail free" card. He must be freaking at the thought he could be removed from office prematurely before being able to issue pardons for himself and his inner circle to prevent future prosecution.

by Anonymousreply 11January 7, 2021 4:36 PM

Indeed, R11.

by Anonymousreply 12January 7, 2021 4:40 PM

At this point I want him tried in a court of law and sentenced to capital punishment which is the proper punishment for treason. We the people deserve accountability from our elected officials.

It doesn't GET anymore embarrassing than yesterday. Swift and decisive repudiation of Trump is the only way for the government to save face. Should it have happened years ago? Of course.

I never said *I* thought it was too embarrassing to go for the 25th, and I'm sick and tired of people like r28 trying to derail threads by focusing on personal attacks, and other DLers like r30 joining in on some petty personal beef when they don't even know what's going on.

As I said, the chances of the 25th being invoked are slim, even less likely now than they were when SylviaFowler started calling me names on the first thread a couple hours ago. One of the reasons the chances are so slim is because the government doesn't like to do anything extreme or that will make them look bad, not unless they have to. I stand by it.

Chao resigned (effective Jan 11) and Wolf just got kicked out by Trump.

The 25th amendment means that Trump has the option to resign or be impeached, basically.

It also means that he is immediately removed from power and then there's four days of President Pence by default, and if he says fuck no to that, Congress has to impeach and convict to get him out longer than the four days.

r10 The problem is so much deeper, bigger than just "oh, we have a really weird and bad President." Today a poll indicated that half of Republicans approve of the assault on the capitol yesterday. The woman how was killed, a veteran, thought that Biden was part of an international child sex slavery ring. The problem is not politics and racism, it's sanity.

I also thought, "well, for the purpose of healing and moving forward, don't prosecute Trump after he leaves office." Maybe we can have a "reconciliation commission"

But the cancer is too deep... the cure needs to be stronger. There HAS to be repercussions for yesterday. Impeachment now... and prosecution after he leaves office. It must be done.

by Anonymousreply 131January 7, 2021 6:57 PM

In the video at R20, what's onscreen is the rally before the Capitol invasion, not the Capitol, so I wonder if this was taken just before Trump's speech. Jr's references to "fighting" are generally about the "fight" to "audit the vote" (i.e. overturn the election)—including the Capitol invasion, which he probably knew was going to happen, but this was not necessarily when it was underway.

by Anonymousreply 132January 7, 2021 6:58 PM

Exactly. We’re beyond chemotherapy and medication. It’s time for excision.

by Anonymousreply 133January 7, 2021 6:59 PM

It's possible the video is before Trump's speech, but they're all excited and surely all know he's about to incite the insurrection in the speech itself, and also put the crosshairs on Pence, so being excited about the "fight" even at THAT point is pretty damning.

Is it possible that Pence is already president? That Trump has secretly resigned? Maybe that's why no action on the 25th yet today. They wouldn't know what to say!

by Anonymousreply 138January 7, 2021 7:05 PM

Pence could be president (acting president) if he could just do it. He desperately wants to be president - he can pretend to be presidential this way.

Impeachment or not, this is quickly turning out to be the best thing that could have happened, both for the Democrats and for America. Republicans have been given a glimpse into what their demagoguery has wrought, and as bad as it was, it was really just a canary in the coal mine. They know they cannot continue to play with fire the way they have been. Their more extreme members will be sidelined, the more moderate Republicans will try to work with Biden, and Biden will likely get more done that Barack Obama did because Republicans are so close to being put out to pasture that they will have no choice.

Am I dreaming? Possibly.

by Anonymousreply 206January 7, 2021 8:22 PM

I don't know if there are "more moderate" Republicans. I do think that most Republican politicians are heavily invested in preserving the federal government, no matter what they say: they want to stay on the gravy train and use their positions to make money (see: teary-eyed Mitch). They have no desire to actually face the consequences of their demagoguery. They want the establishment to stay the establishment. They are not going to want to see another insurrection.

Or - it's a place he can leave without any fanfare. It's out in the middle of nowhere, heavy woods. The press can't really get near it. It's an easy helicopter ride to Frederick, Md where his jet could be gassed up and ready to go.

This whole business about "not enough time" for the 25th Amendment or impeachment is nonsense. Of course the Constitution provides measures to remove a president (or other magistrate) who's been discovered to be a clear and present danger without waiting weeks while letters go back and forth. If it's not happening, it's just because there's not enough will on the Republican side. They're still dependent on the Trumpist base, and they don't want to go beyond the minimum lip service to gratify general public opinion.

After asking for information from the public, the FBI Washington Field Office has received more than 4,000 tips including digital media that are now being analyzed. That includes photos and video of suspects rioting at the Capitol.

And that’s just online tips and doesn’t include tips given over the phone.

Intelligence analysts are triaging the information, sorting out and prioritizing the best leads, getting rid of duplicates. Then any credible leads are forwarded to teams of agents working the case.

Facial recognition software is being used, with some of the analysis being parceled out to the Criminal Justice Information Services Unit in West Virginia.

by Anonymousreply 274January 7, 2021 10:58 PM

Homeland Security and the FBI probably knew about the protests but Trump---the Commander in Chief ---(fucking Orange Shitler) told them not to do anything. When the rioters were overwhelming the Capitol, he told DoD not to send in the National Guard so Pence had to call them. That's really fucked up. He needs to be removed now, just for that but I can't believe Pence is not going to use the 25th.

Matt Yglesias:

The most vexing aspect of the Trump years is not only did he never even hide how terrible he was, lots of the people who spent years helping him hold power — Rubio, Cruz, Perry, etc — called it publicly long before he took office.

The whole time there’s been nothing to expose — he’s exactly as awful as the people who decided to support him said he was.

by Anonymousreply 280January 7, 2021 11:12 PM

At a presser in NY, Sen. Schumer said he and Speaker Pelosi tried to call VP Pence this morning to tell him to invoke the 25th Amendment. "They kept us on hold for 25 minutes and then said the vice president wouldn’t come on the phone," Schumer said.

by Anonymousreply 281January 7, 2021 11:14 PM

My 2 cents:

Obvious, as many other have pointed out, that local police were in cohorts with the mob.

The secret service were the real hero’s getting everyone safely away from danger. That now famous photo of “the police” holding back the mob looks like secret service to me.

I shudder-shudder to think if Nance, Pence etc were caught by the mob.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 322January 7, 2021 11:49 PM

Just checking in on the news. There is a palpable and very noticeable difference in how Dump is being spoken of and treated by politicians and the press. It's very heartening! The talk of him having no way to communicate because all his social media is suspended (which must be killing him) and the GOP keeping him on a very short leash and having effectively "taken over" and likely sending him packing without attending President Biden's inauguration is delicious. Obviously, much of it is political posturing like invoking the 25th or impeachment but it sounds good to my ears. There isn't time/the GOP won't do it.

But what is clear is that he [bold]REALLY[/done] shit in his own nest yesterday. Has a US President ever left office with such stench before?

PollTroll, your hair looks fantastic, which is saying alot, given the past 48 hours!

by Anonymousreply 348January 8, 2021 12:31 AM

I was thinking about the events of the last 24 hours. I have to say, in a way I am glad it happened. I'm sad that it took people having to die, but this is what it took to fully expose Trump, and so many GOP members of Congress for the lowlifes they are. The last 24 hours will probably put an end to the political careers of a lot of people in Congress, and that's a good thing. But most of all it finally got the point through to a lot of people who have not been going along with the fact that Trump is crazed and should have been removed long ago. Trump's support base with people in high enough positions to do him any good after he's out of office has been reduced substantially. Most of his benefactors won't touch him with a 10' pole now.

Trump will be done when only when they have the funeral. Until then, we will be dealing with a very dangerous creature once he leaves the WH. This will be akin to the rise of the Nazi Party. No fucking joke. The republic party will be a total fucking loss on how to handle him. He will have actually more power than he does now over the insane creatures that will die for him. Don't think that this is the end of him. It is the beginning of a whole new nightmare chapter that should scare the fuck out of any sane person.

More than 200 congressional lawmakers now calling for Trump's removal

More than 200 members of the U.S. Senate and House support the removal of President Donald Trump, according to an NBC News' count.

The calls are in reaction to Wednesday's riot at the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, which followed months of Trump claiming the election he lost was fraudulent or stolen, claims for which there is no evidence, and a rally Wednesday. Trump has been accused of inciting the violence.

The measures discussed include a possible second impeachment or the 25th Amendment. Almost all are Democrats or Independents; Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Illinois, is the only Republican.

Trump will leave office in a little less than two weeks, on Jan. 20 when Joe Biden is inaugurated. On Thursday, Trump in a video acknowledged a new administration would be inaugurated and he called Wednesday's chaos "a heinous attack" and condemned the violence.

by Anonymousreply 444January 8, 2021 6:15 AM
Trump is so delusional he thinks yesterday was no big deal. He enjoyed it.

He is delusional but he's not enjoying himself right now. No one will return his calls. No one of consequence will defend him. He has lost all of his allies. Even his sycophants are shitting themselves.

Someone close to him explained slowly -- and in the manner you would speak to a 5 year old -- that the whole world believes that he incited a mob of murderous traitors to attack the Capitol and KILL members of Congress. They also explained that when he is no longer President none of his communications will remain classified and all agencies of law enforcement will reveal that he ordered them to stand down and allow the carnage. Five people died in the purposeful and deliberate execution of his illegal effort to overturn the results of a lawful election.

That sounds scary -- even to a 5 year old.

by Anonymousreply 445January 8, 2021 6:19 AM

Trust me. When he watched the mob on TV he enjoyed it.

by Anonymousreply 446January 8, 2021 6:25 AM

I think he is starting to realize the gravity of what he's done, otherwise why would he cancel his weekend to Camp David and make that "hostage" video.. The US Attorney is investigating whether he and his son incited the rioters, so yeah, he may be charged with sedition, Congress is going to impeach him again. His schedule said he's making phone calls, probably making phone calls to allies so he won't be convicted in the Senate.

by Anonymousreply 447January 8, 2021 6:27 AM

Yup, R446. And the footage of him and Jr Mint watching will be part of the Biden DOJ inquest.

by Anonymousreply 448January 8, 2021 6:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 449January 8, 2021 6:29 AM

His speech showed no more emotion than if he was selling Trump Steaks*. But he was able to throw-in a, "We've just begun" to keep the donations flowing (it's always about money). A towering narcissistic sociopath.

The riot restored his self-esteem, which he lost a bit hiding for two months. "They love me..."

The BBC interviewed Mary Trump this evening and asked her if she was ashamed of her uncle, and she said she's ashamed of the people who voted for him.

by Anonymousreply 450January 8, 2021 6:41 AM
"They don't like to do anything extreme," but the impeachment articles Have. Been. Drawn. Up. Some members of Congress clearly aren't following your guidelines.

This is directed at me (again) but I haven't "given guidelines" nor did I say they wouldn't impeach. I've been saying from the beginning that impeachment is the best solution, it's basically guaranteed in the House, it's conviction in the Senate that we may not have the votes for but at least it's worth a shot. Also that it can't be done immediately like some pundits are claiming, it'll take at least several days.

I get that you disagreed with me like 48 hours ago and you're still hopping mad about it, and also have apparently conflated things I said with what someone else said, but for the love of god, move on.

by Anonymousreply 461January 8, 2021 12:04 PM

He isn’t done. His video statement yesterday redeemed him in the eyes of many, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 462January 8, 2021 12:11 PM

Agree r413, and it seems like the Senators have taken this more seriously than the GOP Representatives, so I think we have a chance at conviction this time. I also like knowing they're going to be between a rock and a hard place with this.

by Anonymousreply 463January 8, 2021 12:11 PM

I haven't seen anything to indicate the video statement redeemed him. If anything, I was seeing MAGA types online upset about it to the point of saying they were crying.

A fond farewell to Trump and his inner circle from British novelist Hari Kunzru.

"Mike Pence you repressed joyless would-be witchfinder, every time you spoke you always looked like you were straining to expel an enormous bolus of your own hypocrisy from your clenched sphincter.

“Betsy DeVos you blandly foolish soulless entitled child-stealing witch, rotting like a corpse inside your Chanel suit.

“Kayleigh McEnenay, you evacuated husk of a mean-girl cheerleader, the cavity where your heart once was pumped full of spite and moronic lies.

“Bill Barr you vast pompous pus-filled bladder of casuistry, you are an enemy of justice, bloated with resentment and cruelty, wobbling like a jelly at the feet of the oligarchs.

“Jared Kushner you vacuous dainty preening overpromoted nub of mediocrity, squeezed like an entitled smear of toothpaste into a silk suit bought with tear-stained dollars wrung out of the suffering tenants of your slum apartments.

“Ivanka Trump you monstrous slug of vanity, you infantile ninny so marinaded in self-regard that in your pea brain you believe we ought to love you for your crimes.

“Mike Pompeo, you bubble, you booby, you flatulent zero, that roiling in your ample guts that you mistake for world shaking significance is just the acid reflux of irrelevancy.

“Don Junior, you scabrous single-nostriled unloved elephant-murdering human wreckage, vibrating with bitterness and impotent rage at all the opportunities you’ve squandered.

“Interlude: all you staffers and interns, so eager to crunch your way in your shiny new work shoes over the bodies of the poor and powerless, I smite you and cast you out one by one.

“Eric Trump, you pallid clammy suppurating nocturnal semi-human grub, your absence of charisma is your only notable trait and the act of flushing you from memory will so be smooth and painless that in a month people will find it hard to picture your moon face.

“Rudy Giuliani, you capering cartoonish skull-faced bag of graft and corruption, too stupid even to ask who’s pulling your strings just so long as you can cake your crusty face in tv make-up and clack your jaw at a camera.

“And of course Stephen Miller, you weeping pustule upon the social body, you dreg, you homunculus, you noxious slime felched from the gaping cavity of Jim Crow, one day may you find yourself walking barefoot across hot sand, desperate for water, crying for your missing child.

Today's news: He has no intention of resigning and fucking coward, Pence will not enact the 25th amendment. We must wait 12 days, hoping that he doesn't set off a bomb somewhere.

Two of the most deranged Trumpers have been kicked off Twitter permanently.

r513. Make him somewhat accountable for his recent actions, humiliate him and, God willing, if Senate goes along, he won’t be able to run again.

I still can’t believe resigning is even an option for him. The only reason I can see for them allowing him to finish his term is to prevent further unrest.

Fuck. That. Rip his ass the fuck out of the White House, call in the National Guard, and do what needs to be done.

Impeaching the President with just 12 days left in his term will only divide our country more.' Statement from House of Representatives Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy:

“Let me be very clear: the violence, destruction, and chaos that unfolded at the Capitol on Wednesday was unacceptable, undemocratic, and un-American. When I spoke to President Trump on Wednesday, I told him he had a great responsibility to intervene to quell the mob and start the healing process for our country. Over the coming weeks we will work with law enforcement to bring anyone responsible for the violence to justice. Lawlessness and extremism have no place in our way of life.

“Our country is not just divided. We are deeply hurt. The task ahead for the next Congress and incoming Biden Administration couldn’t be more momentous. But to deliver a better America for all, partisans of all stripes first must unite as Americans and show our country that a peaceful transition of power has occurred. Impeaching the President with just 12 days left in his term will only divide our country more. I have reached out to President-elect Biden today and plan to speak to him about how we must work together to lower the temperature and unite the country to solve America’s challenges. The coronavirus is still coursing through our communities, businesses and workers are facing unprecedented stress, and children are falling behind. Threats from adversaries such as Russia, China, and Iran are increasing. As leaders, we must call on our better angels and refocus our efforts on working directly for the American people. United we can deliver the peace, strength, and prosperity our country needs. Divided, we will fail.

“Each passing day will offer us an opportunity to heal and grow stronger—a responsibility from which we cannot shrink. The United States remains exceptional and extraordinary, and in the coming weeks and months, we must work to recharge the light of our shining city on a hill.”

He's not really the president anymore, top officials are basically not listening to him but are keeping a watchful eye. Someone on MSNBC said it's a "defacto 25th amendment".

by Anonymousreply 536January 8, 2021 9:43 PM

Republican Kevin McCarthy --- what a hypocrite!! Wasn't he one of the congressman who signed the petition to challenge the Electoral College?

Now he's asking the Democrats to not be so divisive? Eat my shit, asshole.
Could someone please explain to me, a clueless non-American, the point of impeaching Trump when he has less than two weeks left in office?

I just found this thread on Twitter R513. It was posted by The Steady State / NatSec Vets for Biden-Harris. I trust it will answer your question.

"Mr. Trump must be impeached because:

1) he retains pardon power and must be prevented from thwarting prosecutions of conspirators;

2) he attempted to destroy our democracy and must be punished for the attempt;

3) unimpeached he can run again in the future;

4) he retains benefits as a past President that should not be accorded a man who tried to destroy the republic;

5) he retains certain courtesies accorded to past Presidents that should be denied him and impeachment bolsters the case he should be shut out of those courtesies;

6) Congressional enablers must be confronted with their own complicity in the crime and force them to defend him on the floor of the House or Well of the Senate is the minimum they should face."
The United States remains exceptional and extraordinary, and in the coming weeks and months, we must work to recharge the light of our shining city on a hill.

Oh, FFS! is there any cliché he could have possibly missed? DId he miss calling the Capitol "The People's House"?

And that's the kind of thinking that helped get us into this mess. These "patriots" are the problem. They are so convinced that "true Americans" are inherently extraordinary and exceptional, and so is our country, that you can't question or try to correct its/our faults. That's why they think victims of white supremacy are the problem, for example.

Also, what R537 said.
Could someone please explain to me, a clueless non-American, the point of impeaching Trump when he has less than two weeks left in office?

If for nothing else, if he is impeached, tried, and convicted he would lose all post POTUS benefits. No pension, no Secret Service protection, no money for office space and staff, no nothing.

by Anonymousreply 545January 8, 2021 10:16 PM

R545, that would be so delicious and fitting. Too bad it's up to those cowardly, mealy-mouthed Republican senators.

by Anonymousreply 546January 8, 2021 10:18 PM

Bill Kristol:

One year ago: We shouldn't impeach Trump, let the voters decide.

Now (when the voters have decided, and Trump has tried to undermine and overturn a free and fair election, including by inciting violence): It's too late to do anything.

For some, there's always an excuse.

Pelosi Statement Following Virtual Meeting of the House Democratic Caucus

JANUARY 8, 2021 PRESS RELEASE Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement following a virtual meeting of the House Democratic Caucus this afternoon:

“Today, the House Democratic Caucus had an hours-long conversation that was sad, moving and patriotic. It was a conversation unlike any other, because it followed an action unlike any other.

“It is the hope of Members that the President will immediately resign. But if he does not, I have instructed the Rules Committee to be prepared to move forward with Congressman Jamie Raskin’s 25th Amendment legislation and a motion for impeachment. Accordingly, the House will preserve every option – including the 25th Amendment, a motion to impeach or a privileged resolution for impeachment.

“With great respect, our deliberations will continue.”

R551, Ron Watkins and Jim Watkins, the father and son who are allegedly Q, we’re also banned from Twitter.

All this suggests there’s going to be another attack and they’re trying to button it down.

by Anonymousreply 564January 9, 2021 4:12 AM

They should have also asked how many would still have voted for Trump if the election were being held again today. I'm willing to bet the numbers would be MUCH higher.

by Anonymousreply 565January 9, 2021 4:14 AM

I keep telling people that r560 and they either ignore me or yell at me about it.

At this late date it's shocking how many people still get impeachment and conviction confused.
