I am on Social Security so the pandemic really hasn't hurt me financially. With the $1200 stimulus I gave $300 to the food bank and while I hate the idea of so many people being food insecure, I can't help but wonder how many of these people in Indiana would help a food insecure gay man or woman if the tables were reversed. I will probably give a portion of it again to the food bank, but I haven't decided yet.

R49 That's one day of work for most professionals here in the Bay Area. 1/4 of the month's rent, 1 month payment on the Tesla, 2-maybe-3 fancy dinners.
Nothing really taken against the amount of money wasted to wrestle out this deal and implement these payments.
Where are all the "think of the public good" stay home, mask up queens? Virtue signaling about how Americans can't think of doing what's right for everyone in the long run, They should be saying "no, no keep the money for the public good."

R53 You mean mostly the corporations so many here despise? The logic of DLers is so simple at times.
The 1200 payment was not to help the economy, it was a bribe from Trump. Real economic aid should be going to targeted plans to help businesses clearly stuck by this economy and devising roadmaps for recovery.
You think your $600 in purchases (if that) are going to help the Mom and Pops who have dealt with probably 50% income losses (likely more and ongoing) pay back the months' worth of back rent they owe??? They need a plan, not handouts.

The Republican-led, $30 trillion national debt is disgusting.

I earn above the threshold for receiving a stimulus check, but I wish it were more than $600. It's better than nothing, but what the stimulus bill was whittled down by the Republicans from $ 3.4 trillion to $2.2 trillion, to $1.4 trillion to now probably just under $1 trillion. The tax breaks they gave to the rich and the big corporations which supposedly was estimated to cost $1T will according to economist cost the US over $2.5T, but they didn't mind giving that away. Welfare for the rich and crumbs for the middle class and poor when they are struggling.

[quote] The $600 stimulus payment is only for individuals who earn less than $75,000 annually.
As usual, the government punishes those who succeed the most. There will be millions of people who will receive the $600 who have steady jobs and savings in the bank, so it’s a lie to say it is only going to people who “need” it. The government is inefficient and unfair in how it distributes benefits. Instead of $600 to everyone below the limit indiscriminately, it could have given handouts of $1200 or more only to people who are unemployed or who have lost their business due to Covid.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | December 22, 2020 8:34 AM |
Unemployed are getting way more than $600. For those who qualify it is $300/wk plus whatever they receive in weekly UI benefits times 11 weeks. At minimum for many that is bit over four thousand dollars.
One reason Pelsoi et al pushed for $600 was because many who are unemployed do not get benefits (read illegal aliens). This time Pelosi and Schumer got republicans to agree to allow more immigrants to get stimulus checks. Long as one married partner is a US citizen the couple can get $600 x 2, plus each minor child who as a SSN also will receive money.
Will credit it wasn't best of things, but was best that was going to happen as this congress limps towards its closure. Only reason why Mitch McConnell moved at all was he is nervously eyeing next month's runoff elections in Georgia.

Think some of you are missing the larger picture. Pelosi and Schumer in their weakened state (democrats didn't have their Blue Wave in November's elections), had to deal with conditions on political ground as it were.
Mitch McConnell and conservative republicans insisted on keeping this stimulus bill even lower than one trillion (USD) they were floating before November, so with only $900 or so billion to play around with something had to give.
No, the stimulus checks of $600 aren't great, but then again since large numbers of you seem not to need it anyway.....
But OTOH all parts of unemployment were extended including coverage for gig workers/self-employed. True they're only getting $300 extra per week instead of $600, but some other good bits were added. Those who have both W-2 and 1099 income may qualify for an additional $100 on top of $300.
As it relates to this group many of our sisters and brothers in performing arts/entertainment got hit last time with UI because they had just that, both income from W-2 and side gigs, sadly many states calculated their UI bennies using the lower self-employed number so they got less. No, it's not huge, but that extra $400 on top of regular UI will help many of those who actually need the money.
There is also a nice pot of money earmarked to performing arts, comedy and other entertainment venues. All have been hit badly with people out of work for almost a year now in many instances.

What's different now compared to 2017 is that Bitcoin has gained greater acceptance among some financial institutions and corporates as an asset class. In recent months, Microstrategy bought $1billion of Bitcoin, MassMutual $100mn, Square $50mn, Paypal too.

He's going to veto the bill under feigned concern that the $600 is too low. It isn't enough money, but he doesn't truly care about that. He's going to veto it because he can and to punish Americans for not voting for him. People are fucked.
by Anonymous | reply 248 | December 23, 2020 1:19 AM |
r248, what you posted is exactly why I predicted this- pure spite and one last power play as the President.
If Congress has the votes to override, Trump may go out as the only US President in history to have a veto override in the last two weeks of the Presidency.
If he grudgingly signs it, it will only be because he sees a benefit to himself.

The Senate cleared the package by a 92-6 vote after the House approved it by another lopsided vote, 359-53. Those votes totals would be enough to override a veto should Trump decide to take that step.

They could validly claim ignorance of what was in the bill when they originally passed it, because they only had a few hours with the text before they voted. Now that the horrors of the bill have become public, it will be more difficult to vote for it.

Learn the rules and learn to play by them to get ahead.
There’s no reason anyone without a SERIOUS physical or intellectual disability is making under $150,000/year in the US. If you are, that is by choice. Yes, bad things happen, but if you’ve been saving and preparing for a disaster, you wouldn’t need those $600. If you made the choice to have an unstable job, I hope you are enjoying your life, but you can’t expect others to subsidize your good time.

R276 This is the tomahawk steak troll (but oddly enough not the Tomahawk/Camus poster - both are too gaudy and consumerist for me). You speak the truth but it is lost on the queens in this thread. You are truly speaking to the 1% now.
I turned on the troll when some queen had the audacity the dare me to explain how to turn the stimulus payments into $5,000 in 5 years, calling me an arrogant and then ***correcting*** me by positing I should have stated that goal should take 20 years!!!!! LOL. Then, when confronted with actual evidence of how even in 2020 alone one could have more than doubled the stimulus payments , went off the rails. Further, when another poster explained Bitcoin, said poster or someone just as idiotic, had the stupidity to argue Bitcoin 2012 was the same as Bitcoin 2016 (when it wasn't) and Bitcoin 2020 has gone through the roof!
How can you not troll such financially-illiterate (agreed, by choice) queens who populate these stimulus threads? Solutions are literally presented to them and all they have to offer are "Fuck off and go to Central America, Grandpa and Cunt!!!"
And.... I still don't believe any of these queens are starving and/or months past due on rent/bills and ***truly*** need $600. GTFO.

Spare me the "it recovered over time" bull shit. The point is, it's very risky and should only be done with money you are willing to lose. Most people are not willing to throw their 600 or 1,2000 check on a roulette wheel except for those who don't really need it anyway.
Crypoto is NOT INSURED. If you put money in a US bank and it goes under you are insured up to 250,000. If you invest in the stock market with a brokerage firm and they go under, it's insured up to 500,000.
Just last year in 2019 Binance Cryptocurrency was hacked and they stole $40 Million dollars worth of currency. Guess what, none of those people got their money back. No insurance.

Fell in 2018 from its peak =/= where it is, today 12/22/21
Most people =/= The ones who know how to get ahead financially
Roulette wheel =/= Cryptocurrency, or stocks that you can research and make informed choices about
Crypto's not insured =/= then invest in something else
Except for those who don't really need it anyway =/= Every single person getting a check, and what's "really need it" mean anyway
No insurance =/= not an excuse not to learn how to invest
Just admit you're too lazy to learn how to make money grow for you. Or too much of a pussy. Or both.

At this point DT is just fucking with American people and members of republican party who aren't on Team Trump. He is a lame duck president constantly humiliating himself as he grasps for straws to remain in office. You are either team Trump or you are a radical leftist, elitist, socialist dictator. by Anonymous | reply 307 | December 24, 2020 11:21 AM |
R304
Stimulus bill passed earlier this week, That Orange Man thus far has not signed it so things are stuck in a holding pattern.
DT did veto defense bill setting up major drama for early next week when Congress will decide if it will (or can) override.
R307
If Mitch McConnell and his core conservative republicans in senate didn't budge previously on much lower amounts of UI money, what makes you think they are going to blink now?
Unlike DT Mitch McConnell won his reelection bid, and thus lives to fight another day in January. Whereas the Idiot in Chief will be gone in a little under four weeks.
If worse comes to worse nothing will get done until Biden arrives after 20th January. At that time Congress will have to come up with another new bill, or try to get the previous one passed. Good thing about this is Biden can move to have much of the excess like DT's restoration of three martini lunch deduction scrapped.
Yes, people will lose out of four or more weeks of UI, but that can easily be compensated by making payments retroactive to 2 January 2021.
by Anonymous | reply 308 | December 24, 2020 11:36 AM |
The problem R308 is a lot of people need that money to pay rent, utilities, food, etc. I realize you can negotiate with the utility company and I would imagine where it is cold they can't, by law, turn off your utilities, but you can't negotiate with the grocery store. Either have the money for food or you don't.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | December 24, 2020 12:40 PM |
I think the COVID bill will die because of the pocket veto. No COVID relief because they won’t be able to negotiate a new bill in the time left. So Trump’s legacy will be chaos and misery born out of rage. Only 26 days to go and we’ll be rid of him.
by Anonymous | reply 310 | December 24, 2020 12:47 PM |
R309
Yes, one realizes scenario outlined may cause some households financial hardship, but at this point what do you suggest?
There is an out here: if a POTUS does not sign a bill within ten (10) days, and Congress is in session it becomes law. DT could also go with a "pocket veto" which happens when Congress adjourns before those ten days and bill still hasn't been signed.
by Anonymous | reply 311 | December 24, 2020 12:59 PM |
Let’s be honest. $600 doesn’t go far for anyone, no matter how poor you are. Americans have every right to be pissed off, on both sides, by the table scraps being presented. Come back with a better offer!
by Anonymous | reply 312 | December 24, 2020 1:02 PM |
Also even if stimulus bill was passed early this week it would be likely late January or into February before states began sending out UI payments to eligible claimants.
DOL has to write rules and guidance that is sent down to states. State departments of labor have to interpret those rules and guidance and then program their often ancient computers for another new unemployment program. In most states thanks to those old computer systems when a program ends, it is over. They simply cannot continue say giving people who were still getting federal UI payments as of 26 December whatever the new bill entitles them to receive.
The stimulus checks are another matter, but Munchin stated earliest those could go out is by middle of January, which is several days before he's out of a job. Yellen or whoever is acting head of Treasury would be tasked with rolling out program.

[quote] My tax return decreased each year of our Dear Leader's presidency, so I look at these Covid stimulus checks as if they're part of the tax return I was supposed to get in the first place.
R306, when you say "return", do you mean "refund"? A tax "return" is the form you file that shows whether you owe taxes or are entitled to receive money back from the government in the form of a "refund" for having overpaid taxes in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | December 24, 2020 1:14 PM |
While we’re discussing taxes, you do realize you can no longer write off a home office as a deduction anymore thanks to the Dump Tax Bill? Unless you’re an independent contractor, that is not available to millions who have to work from home.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | December 24, 2020 1:19 PM |
Again think real issue GOP and some others have with handing out huge stimulus checks is not everyone is hurting financially. In fact a good number aren't just doing fine, but thriving.
All my friends in nursing for instance are making money hand over fist. OTOH my IT friends and some others are working from home (or only going in to office a few times a month at this rate), still making same money and also enjoying all this new found freedom and time off.
Do understand however there isn't an easy way to square that circle; unless you start making every household earning < $80k per year ($160 for married couples) file some sort of need statement, some are going to get money that is surplus to requirements.
We do know from economic reports that large numbers of people regardless of "need" went out and spent all that stimulus money, so in the end that is really what matters. Be it rent, credit card debt, or a new something from Gucci, it is all money pumped back into economy.

by Anonymous | reply 318 | December 24, 2020 1:42 PM |
R316, you don’t seem to understand why governments do stimulus checks (hint: look at the first word). This is to keep the economy moving so that we still have an economy when the pandemic eases. It would be nice to target the money, but more important to get it out there. People at these income levels tend to spend right away, just like people on unemployment. That’s the point of the checks, even if helping those in need is a wanted feature.
by Anonymous | reply 319 | December 24, 2020 2:09 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 329 | December 24, 2020 7:14 PM |
You want to waste time going through 200M Americans names to find out if they need it or not? Instead of just taking an income cutoff?
Besides, who’s to say who “needs” it? My mother is retired and her washer and dryer just broke. She’s going to have to buy new ones. On a fixed income that’s hard, but a stimulus check would be a tremendous help. Yet, it could be argued she doesn’t “need” this stimulus because, being retired, she didn’t lose any income, except for that in her retirement portfolio.

by Anonymous | reply 332 | December 24, 2020 10:57 PM |
Yes.
In fact, I was going to buy her a new set. She’ll fight me tooth and nail on it, but what do I care? I just have to “spring” it on her and make sure I get the ones she wants.
I’ve only been to her house outside except for the summer when I put in her air conditioners and the fall to remove them (window units) masked up while she was masked and stayed in another room. I’m too nervous and don’t want to inoculate her so she’ll have to do her research. I know the chances of a bad situation is probably like 100:1, but it’s that “1” that concerns me. I’d never forgive myself.
Thank you, r332. That was nice of you.

Bitcoin is now taxed now by the IRS so anyone thinking this is money under the table should be aware of that. All your info will be sent to them when you buy and sell. Just like stocks. It's also seen as an asset so it can be confiscated in a lawsuit just like any bank account.

My point R354, is that until about 2 years ago, the Bitcoin was a haven for illegal money transfers, laundering and crime. It was annoyances and virtual the perfect storm for criminals to do business. Now that the IRS is receiving user data, all I was saying is that its not a place to hide your money anymore which is what a lot of people were doing.

Thanks, R408. what you described is exactly what I intend to do. R405, you didn't mention your pandemic concern in your post. by Anonymous | reply 411 | January 5, 2021 1:02 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 412 | January 5, 2021 1:06 PM |
Yeah, good luck with that steak house, hope they are still open when the pandemic is over. Our local one is having a public meltdown and is threatening to close permanently if this thing isn't over by March. They seem like greedy fucker. They are in the top 3 most expensive restaurants in the city, they have been in the same low rent location for 2 decades and during the pandemic when outside seating was allowed, they pushed it from 10 to 60 tables half way down the block. They should not be hurting for money. They should have millions of dollars in the bank by now. A typical dinner for two is never less than $250 and that's without wine or alcohol. I feel sorry for the staff, but the owners sound like greedy ass holes. Oh and did I mention they wont do take out?
by Anonymous | reply 413 | January 5, 2021 1:11 PM |
R412 - All of our restaurants here in Houston are open. I don’t do takeout so I dine in and it’s been wonderful. Because of the lowered customer volume, I get great service, no waiting, and excellent food quality. For me, it’s silly to pay restaurant prices for their takeout. Eating in the restaurant dining room is the only way to fully enjoy the meal, direct from the chef.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | January 5, 2021 1:11 PM |

R454 is very stupid. Or senile.

R454, They said on CNN this morning that it could take 2-3 months for a third stimulus package to make its way through Congress.
A few Senators are saying they're opposed to a third stimulus package . . . Mitt Romney is one of them.

I read in Forbes that if your check wasn't mailed by the 15th which was the last day they were mailing them you can check the gov't. site to see where your check is and it says "Not Available", then it wasn't mailed and you have to apply thru your tax return.
mine was listed as Not Available.

"mine was listed as Not Available."
As were millions of others.

R458, mine was listed as mailed on Jan. 6 -- where is it?
by Anonymous | reply 460 | January 21, 2021 2:53 PM |
r458 they said it could take 4-5 weeks to receive it in the mail because of the backlog at the post office. This is what happens when you destroy sorting machines.

Here is info you may need if you didn't receive your check. I didn't know this but the gov't. is also sending us a notice 1444 which you need to file for the missing stimulus.

Mine said "scheduled to be mailed January 6"......it arrived in my mailbox on January 13.

That's what the IRS website said for me, too, R463 -- today is the 21st and it's still not here. Where are they mailed from? I'm in northern Calif.
by Anonymous | reply 464 | January 21, 2021 3:56 PM |
Heating oil and yearly car insurance.
by Anonymous | reply 465 | January 21, 2021 3:59 PM |
200 donation to an animal shelter. $100 gift cards to three women who helped me with my sick brother and $100 to Harvesters a food network. Then I'm finished being generous and going back to my selfish prick ways.

R464 I'm in Indiana. Mine was mailed from Philadelphia PA.

The Post Office is definitely fucked up...I sent a package from NYC on Dec 16 to UK. It has tracking...it was stuck for ages on Dec 23 as in transit to next facility...it was still in a sorting facility NJ (when I went to inquire at the post office). Then on Jan 19...tracking says went to FL, Jan 20, another facility in FL, then today Jan21, it's back to NJ!!!!

It’s taking the scenic route!

Postal Clerk: Whut state is UK?
Other Postal Clerk: I think it's Kentucky.....

Card arrived yesterday. I got a check last time. I took it to one of the ATMs in the right system and got it all in CASH, baby!

I enjoyed 20 hand jobs and 2 blowjobs from a local college guy who works cheap.
Can't wait for the next installment!
by Anonymous | reply 472 | January 26, 2021 3:52 PM |
It's funny, I was waiting and waiting and waiting for it to arrive, now that it's here, I have spent the last 4 hours trying to decide what to do with it. Everything I was going to spend it on now seems silly. This is not like me.
by Anonymous | reply 473 | January 27, 2021 5:09 AM |
I’ll book a cruise later in the year.
by Anonymous | reply 474 | January 27, 2021 5:19 AM |
R473, if you really don't "need" it, why not donate it to someone who does? Barbers, waiters, etc. -- people who are not just broke at the moment but without jobs at all and have been for months?
by Anonymous | reply 475 | January 27, 2021 5:48 AM |
I wish I had a lovely answer, like “I’m going to donate it to clothe and feed the homeless,” or something else philanthropic. Instead I’ve decided to spoil myself with an expensive strain of marijuana called “Loud Dream” that costs $800 per ounce (my usual purchase is $160 an ounce). I always see it when in Denver and now I’m gonna stroll into the dispensary and buy it!

R161, national politicians don't need your money. When the next check arrives, spend it on yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 477 | February 18, 2021 12:24 PM |
I bought weed!
by Anonymous | reply 478 | February 18, 2021 12:59 PM |
How much fucking weed do you need people! Geez, 600 buys a lot of weed. And R476 you are an idiot if you think weed is worth 6 times the normal price because it has a fancy name.
by Anonymous | reply 479 | February 19, 2021 11:41 AM |
R476 - I’m 50 and I’ve had every material possession you can imagine. Now it’s the simple things that keep me content and grateful. One of those things is me thinking I’m smoking the best marijuana available in the US. Even if it’s partly marketing to my ego, I’ll buy it hook, line, and sinker.

No one smokes grass, seeds, and stems today Gramps. All weed sold in dispensaries are high quality buds.
by Anonymous | reply 481 | February 19, 2021 12:55 PM |
R481 - I live in Texas, smartass, and in between trips to Colorado I do in fact sometimes resort to smoking “grass, stems, and seeds. You might want to consider the ignorant excrement coming out of your mouth before you speak next time.
by Anonymous | reply 482 | February 19, 2021 1:01 PM |
Measly? If you earn little enough to qualify for it, you should be grateful.
by Anonymous | reply 483 | February 19, 2021 1:23 PM |
My brother says I have a duty to spend every cent in order to boost our local economy but I already gave everything I need, really.

Yet another reason why people love California. I can get mine delivered if I want, just like a pizza. And very high quality bud and eatables.

they say you can file to claim a credit if you didn't get the first or second stimulus checks on your tax return due april 15. But what about the 3rd one?
does anyone know?
by Anonymous | reply 487 | March 12, 2021 5:40 PM |
Going to buy a lot of eatables for the long haul. Thanks Covid, at least something good came out of it.
