Call Me Kat
Mayim Bialik stars as a 39-year-old woman who decides to use the money her parents had been saving for her wedding to open a cat-themed cafe.
Co-starring Leslie Jordan as the sissy eldergay, Cheyenne Jackson as the meth gay, and featuring Swoosie Kurtz as the ginger martini. Laugh track provided by Chuck Lorre Productions. This winter on Fox! (winter release not an indication of no confidence).

This is NOT Miranda. Miranda ran a joke shop. In the first episode, she is seen licking a chocolate penis. Miranda was funny because she was so naturally dorky. Mayim can't pull that off. Miranda had a funny girl sidekick named Stevie. Don't see a funny girl sidekick. Miranda was pure slapstick. Haven't seen that in this commercial.

In order for this type of humor to work, there needs to be an essence of kooky. Miranda Hart was funny because you could believe her kooky personality. She allowed her friend in the show to continually call her "Queen Kong". A young Barbra Streisand could have pulled this off. A young Liza Minnelli could have pulled this off. Mayim? Not so much.

Mayim has a degree from UCLA in mathematics, is really cool apparently, and she made a fortune on HIMYM. Mayim really doesn't give a fuck about her look or she's accepted that she was never and will never be a Hollywood beauty. She was on the ugly side of cute during her Blossom years. She also doesn't throw it in our face like Lens Dunham with body positivity messages or flaunting her weight or lecturing us on accepting the unattractive. I like her . I saw the billboard for her show and the tagline was "Disappointing Mothers Since 1982", which btw, quickly replaced Kim Catrell's ad for her new show. I guess that didn't take off. I will give Mayim credit for going for 39 when she's a hard 44/45 - she has some DL in her.

[quote]I loved Chummy in CTM but after watching it for years also realize she may have been the most stereotypically British character on the show.
But that was who the character was in the book. The woman who Chummy was based on came from an upper crust British family. She never really fit into that environment so she became a midwife. Her parents were appalled that she worked among the lower class in London's East End. Miranda was really the only actress who could portray the woman. In the original book, they had to find her a special bicycle because she was too tall for their regular bicycles.
Gossip has it that Miranda got pissed off at the producers of CTM and left the show. I'd like to know what the issue was that made her leave. Maybe they wanted her to play the lesbian character that Emerald Fennel later played.

R93 I read the books too and yes, MH was the perfect person to play Chummy.
I always wondered what happened. She left, and then was supposed to come back on a more recurring basis, but then they announced her schedule wouldn't permit it. Just as well because half of the people she was originally on with have also left the show.
I do wish Jenny Lee and the little nurse that became a nun and went crazy will come back before the end of the show's run. And the Dishy Vicar, of course.

Just not funny enough. Much of Mayim’s physical humor seems forced, and yeah, too much camera mugging. By the mid-point in the show, the writers seemed to have forgotten about the cats.
The supporting cast is fine, but not used enough— and the pilot episode is not the place to notice that. I wanted to like this show, which makes it even more disappointing. I could never offer a recommendation for this.

It seems like this show is based on Miranda but they seem to be heavily influenced by Fleabag, both in tone and some storylines. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Bialak is playing too glamorous to be a Miranda type. Miranda is awkward and witty in a different way.
There’s a chance this could find its footing, I’ll give it a few more episodes.

Swoozie’s plastic face paled in comparison to the fact that you could see all the bones in her chest. The poor woman is 85 pounds tops. Wow. I turned it off after the tenth time Mayim mugged to the camera. She’s way overacting in this. And I liked her in Big Bang.

Cheyanne is playing a straight guy, or at least bi/pan character. I don't know what to say. I hate Big Bang but I sympathize with this lady and Leslie and the whole cast.

I cannot believe this got greenlit. Someone read the script and said "Love it, film it!" Someone directed this and said "brilliant performances! Ship it!" Someone watched it at said "brilliant! Air it!"
I have never seen anything more shiteous on TV, and I've had to sit through several episodes of BBT and 2 Broke Girls. It had zero laughs, zero wit, zero good acting. Felt like it was trying to be Fleabag but failed miserably. The asides could've worked, but Blossom either doesn't have the acting chops for it, or the director is really bad at their job because they made it even worse. The laughtrack was like the bonus kernels of corn in this turd.
And yes, I was forced to watch it because they sandwiched it between football and the preview of The Great North (which I did like, but needs refining).

HBO is not network tv. HBO works on a very fixed residual plan that is very low. Mayim says in that video they didn't make that much money back then, but BBT sure gives a lot of residuals. Network TV is the paradise for that.

Breaking the fourth wall is the laziest form of writing. If we can’t understand what’s going on in the character’s life/mind without it, it’s because you’re not doing your writing job well.
I caught like 3 minutes of the show and Bialik’s character was unfunny, the humor mostly physical, and she looked at the camera like 4 times. Why do shows love to make unfunny socially awkward characters? We’ve seen this done the right way already with other shows.

I reluctantly watched a few minutes of the second episode and couldn't help but notice that canned laughter was used after just about every line that someone spoke. Since there was very little that was even remotely funny, the poor guy assigned to adding the laugh track must have given up trying to figure out what was supposed to be a punchline and decided to add it to EVERYTHING.

R166, indeed I was bored at work when I watched it. (I work overnight alone, so not a lot going on.) My mum watched the first ep and told me how much funnier Leslie Jordan is on his IG stories than on this show. That's an indicator right there that the writing and production are to blame. I finally got around to watching the first two episodes on Hulu last night and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not nearly as bad as I expected. I don't think Bialik is the greatest actress, but I enjoyed the premise and the some of the cleverness of the asides to the audience. The cast is decent, too, although Swoosie is difficult to look at.
Vanessa Lachey is looking more and more like Vanessa Williams every day.

Dreadful. Appalling. Unfunny. Embarrassing for all concerned. Bialik is certainly giving it her all, but watching her try to land jokes that just aren't funny is painful and a lesson in "be careful what you wish for." The fourth wall device is distracting and often poorly executed. The entire project appears to be the work of a largely lazy writing staff, made up of--apparently--people who graduated from the Acme School of Plumbing and Writing. They're all a bunch of hacks.
Cheyenne Jackson is easy on the eyes but it's hard to measure him as an actor since they give him very little to do. And, sorry, but there's no way in hell that a stud like Jackson's character would ever be interested in short and dumpy Bialik. And no amount of snappy dialogue will ever fix that.

The problem with this show is that Mayim hasn't perfected the subtlety that Miranda Hart has when she does a double take to the camera. When Miranda does it, you feel like you're standing next to her and sharing a secret joke. Mayim can't generate that intimacy.

I think the difference, too, is Miranda is a comedian, which I think gives her a different sense of timing and delivery called for in this type of role. Mayim’s energy feels forced. Plus, the writing is just not good. I’d be surprised if this is renewed.

CMK is the US' idea of twee sitcom entertainment. And for that it's pretty fun. The UK rather goes for slapstick entertainment (Mr. Bean, Miranda, Mrs. Brown's Boys, for example) as a crowd pleaser.
There is no scientific formula what works and what doesn't. Otherwise, all the US would have is variations of Friends, Seinfeld, and Cheers. And The Big Bang Theory, of course.

I wanted to hate this show and wrote a mocking post above before I watched it.
Watched the first episode on Hulu and was surprised at how much I liked it - it's not a great show but it's certainly watchable during Quarantine
Swoosie Kurtz looks like some Republican anorexic bobble-head with excessive surgery, hair extensions, the whole nine yards, but she's still a good comedic actress.
Cheyenne is more likable in this than in anything I've seen him in before.
Leslie Jordan is muted; he hasn't found his groove in this show yet.
Kayla Pratt as Randi, a cafe employee, is the sassy black girl - like Jordan, they have figured out how to use her or make her seem real yet.
Mayim Bialik is the surprise to me - I never saw "Blossum" or watched her in the "Big Bang Theory" - she's engaging.
I'm still a little repulsed at the idea of serving food with all those cats around....

So Hulued a few more episodes and I keep finding Mayim acting in this disconcerting as she doesn’t look comfortable at all. I think I’ve finally figured out what’s going on. Off camera a gun is being trained on one of her children and she’s being forced to act in this show. She is desperate, very desperate to save her child, but that desperation bleeds through and she can never comfortably convey the comedy and lighthearted whimsy of this character. She is trying, really trying folks, but the weight of the situation is just too heavy.
And by the way, what’s up with all the spit takes, they haven’t been funny since The Three Stooges?

[quote]I think Mayim is trying to channel Miranda Hart, and it’s not really working.
Exactly!!! It worked with Miranda because she is a lovable dork. And she was so dorky that the talking to the camera worked with her. PLUS, she always treated it like a "show". Several episodes start out with her doing a camera monologue and then her saying, "On with the show."
Mayim can't make any of that work for her.
And the sassy black girl isn't working. The original dynamic in Miranda was that the Stevie character was more straight-laced and hardnosed and kept the shop running. She was the sensible one.
Swoosie Kurtz is funny, but she's not given the same interaction with Kat that Patricia Hodge had with Miranda. Part of why Miranda was so funny is because you can see that the mother made Miranda a bit loopy.
Leslie Jordan's character doesn't work because in Miranda, the Clive character worked in the bar. So you only got two minutes of his character. And his lines were more bitchy, whereas Leslie Jordan is more Southern folksy. And the Clive character was cut from the show (or maybe the actor got a better gig which is one of the reasons characters disappear from Brit shows).
Miranda specifically said that she was tired of seeing shows with ugly men dating beautiful women so in her show, she was going to date a beautiful man. I'm not a Cheyenne fan. He looks a bit too rough in the face (sorry, but I always think of poz face when I look at him). Tom Ellis could make butter melt on Miranda.

The British version succeeded because Miranda Hart is a fine comedy actress. She is very adept at slapstick and able to balance it with the quirky. Mayim has stripped the show entirely of slapstick.
Miranda was able to balance the comedy with a little bit of empathy. You kind of feel sorry for her while laughing at her dorkiness. And she's able to bring in a certain amount of breathless panic which also makes her character funny. I strongly suggest watching the British version.

The British love broad, low brow comedy. They have a stage entertainment tradition called Panto that is non-existent anywhere else, I believe. It's performing a child's play in a campy manner with some male actors playing female characters for laughs and naughty double entendres that go over the children's' heads, but the adults in the audience get it.
To adapt this for the US market you have to eliminate everything that made it, well, British, because the US audience will not respond well to it. And once you do you get the critics that complain that it's a weak rip-off of a vastly superior original. And the US market is incredibly fickle.

What I don’t understand is they must spend millions on the rights to restage these, but then don’t use the scripts or really much else from the originals. Then why bother, this is a whole other creature all together, just make your crappy show and don’t even call it a remake?

r249, you're right. This doesn't have enough of the original show to be considered a remake. Why did they bother?

r249, I think the problem is the greenlit stage where you pitch the idea to investors, producers, studio execs. They respond well to established franchises that come with a built-in audience. Once you have their money and go-ahead ...

Those endings where the cast waves frantically like Granny in the Beverly Hillbillies, would be better suited if they actually put up pictures and details of rescue cats who need a forever homes instead, maybe something innovative like each local market fills in with a clip. At least this god awful show would be doing something productive.

R247 is right.
Mayim Bialik is t right for the part. She's dorky but just not relatable.
Over here in the UK most of us probably know a Miranda type character and can relate to her.
Sadly, this format didn't travel well over the pond.

The Office, All in the Family, Three's Company and Sanford and Son are all remakes of classic British sitcoms that actually worked. The same cannot be said for Call Me Kat. It makes the U.S. version of Kath and Kim look like a multi-time Emmy winner.

Just saw the latest episode, I'm happily surprised that it seems to be getting better and settling down into a funny groove. The talking-to-the-camera bit seems much more relaxed, she doesn't act surprised every time she turns around, and everybody seems much more relaxed. Even the waving goodbye is good-natured and it's nice to see everyone come out for a bow.

The show shamelessly panders to the audience in the most infantile ways. I find it excruciating. Every single thing is so cloying and cutesy, with passive aggressive "Kat" a most heinous, unlikeable lead. The lines are terrible and the actors just do "exasperated". It's a show that needs to be gently taken behind the barn and shot for the good of us all. It's the kindest thing to do.

Mayim sure gets prominent sit-com roles.
"Call Me Kat" started as too rigid, too forced, too much structured character diversity. Writers were overly focused of establishing character "lanes" for the cast
Give the cast a multitude of funny lines to deliver. No need for.multiple, complicated plots per episode.

Poor Cheyenne. In episode 8, he's reduced to talking about his pee stream.
In Miranda, the Gary character was a central character. In Call Me Kat, he's just a side character with Leslie Jordan and the snippy black girl getting more screen time than he does.

Agreed R271. It's about degrading the hot guy to make fraus feel superior. Also the reference to posing for Playgirl. No attractive men would be chasing "Kat" like they do in this trainwreck. And the doughy dancing bartender was just pathetic.

Yeah, I didn't get that. It's obvious this show is diversity casting on steroids, but if they wanted an Asian male to take off his shirt and dance on a bar, I'm sure they could have found one with a good body.

Mayim Bialik is by far the worst thing about the show. Every line sounds like it’s coming from a girl who’s never acted a day in her life, and lands like a lead balloon.
Have to also agree that it’s cringeworthy to have hot guys interested in her. You’ve got an overweight 40 year old who dresses like a frump and acts weird and crazy. THAT pulls in the hot guys?
Cheyenne Jackson is actually pretty good in his role, and it’s not his fault they give him too little to do and too much of it is shit. Still, the sitcom needs a solid lead to work, and Bialik is just terrible.

Episde 9, Cheyenne makes onion jam and sings/plays the piano with Kat. He's acting more like her gay BFF and she his fag hag. Miranda Hart needs to send a cease and desist letter to this show.

Actually, the new boyfriend is a bit nerdy.
However, the person who thought up that basketball scene in episode 9 should be shot. Just earlier in the episode, Kat bumps into a waitress (still trying to do the Miranda Hart shtick and not very successfully) and later she's an expert basketball player. Do writers even think about character anymore?
If I were Swoosie Kurtz, I'd be pissed. She was nothing more than a walk-on in episode 9. In Miranda, Patricia Hodge is a major character. They're giving the black girl too much screen time and not focusing on the characters that make the lead character interesting: the mother and the hot but unavailable boyfriend.

Surprisingly good. Not much bad to say. She's talented & the cast, set and concept is good. The little wink to the camera doesn't destroy it (kind of well done) and Mayim shows her versatility in portraying yet a third completely different comic character. Swoosie goes without comment, but she's great as always. Cheyenne is gorgeous and the most likeable he's ever been.

I think there could be a way to save this show by adding another element. Keep it all the same as it is, but also add the fact that she is really a cold blooded mafia sniper, and very casually have her offhandedly stalk and kill someone just tucked into the show like any other scene. That includes her breaking the 4th wall with cute little “Oh, you caught me, my bad!” thrown in with a chuckle.

I think that might be the problem. This is the type of show that REQUIRES a live audience for reaction and timing. If they had an actual audience maybe they would've realized that so much of it just isn't working. I have no problem with actual studio audience laughter, even if its sweetened, but fully canned laughter is annoying.

Episode 10 has Leslie Jordan taking off his clothes. They steal the Nathan Lane-Love!Valor!Compassion! idea of nude beneath an apron. It's not a pretty sight.
And once again, our Cheyenne is reduced to a walk-on with about 3 lines. I bet he's glad he has a good agent who got him the billing "And Cheyenne Jackson" because he's barely in any of the episodes. Once again, more story line goes to the sassy black girl.

That and the asides to the audience were taken from Miranda Hart’s show. I think they say this is based on her show just so they could steal those elements.
I wonder why they didn’t put Cheyenne in Leslie Jordan’s role as the Southern gay boy? Cheyenne is old enough that the Mama jokes would work. He’s completely wasted on this show because they didn’t follow through with Miranda’s idea of the dorky girl pursuing the sexy guy.

I’ve never watched Miranda but R326 touches on a great point. As much as MB would like to be the huggable quirky, dorky girl, she ain’t. She’s impersonating what worked for someone else. It shows because it feels soooooo forced. It’s almost like a parody of a sitcom, or in this case shitcom. Especially the relationships w CJ & SK. No chemistry. None. Call me Katatonic.
