Call Me Kat

Mayim Bialik stars as a 39-year-old woman who decides to use the money her parents had been saving for her wedding to open a cat-themed cafe.

Co-starring Leslie Jordan as the sissy eldergay, Cheyenne Jackson as the meth gay, and featuring Swoosie Kurtz as the ginger martini. Laugh track provided by Chuck Lorre Productions. This winter on Fox! (winter release not an indication of no confidence).

That wasn't as horrible as I was expecting. Actually, it was somewhat funny.

by Anonymousreply 1November 23, 2020 2:39 AM

This is actually a remake of the Britcom, Miranda.

by Anonymousreply 2November 23, 2020 2:43 AM

And some of you said good TV was dead.

by Anonymousreply 3November 23, 2020 2:44 AM

I'm scared to look at Swoosie Kurtz's face. Is it really bad? Has she had some more plastic surgery?

by Anonymousreply 4November 23, 2020 2:44 AM

Animal-themed cafe was already done in Fleabag by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Couldn't they think up some other idea?

by Anonymousreply 5November 23, 2020 2:47 AM

barf

by Anonymousreply 6November 23, 2020 2:48 AM

Delayed because Bialik still slut shaming Weinstein victims and breast feeding her 13yo.

by Anonymousreply 7November 23, 2020 2:54 AM

39? Really?

by Anonymousreply 8November 23, 2020 2:55 AM

39, huh?

LOLOLOLOLOL....etc...

by Anonymousreply 9November 23, 2020 2:56 AM

r8 and r9 beat me to it

by Anonymousreply 10November 23, 2020 2:58 AM

If anyone can play a petite and gorgeous 39-year-old, it's Mayim.

by Anonymousreply 11November 23, 2020 2:59 AM

I'll watch for Leslie Jordan

by Anonymousreply 12November 23, 2020 3:00 AM

Wait, this is a real show??! Not a DL parody?!

by Anonymousreply 13November 23, 2020 3:00 AM

I haven't heard a thing from my agent about this.

by Anonymousreply 14November 23, 2020 3:01 AM

WOAHHH , this looks bad

by Anonymousreply 15November 23, 2020 3:01 AM

Whaddabout our Blossom reboot?! I'm also up for a Gimme a Break reboot. WOAHHHH!

by Anonymousreply 16November 23, 2020 3:04 AM

I know not everybody gets to be pretty or cute, but whenever I see Mayim's face I'm like WHAT THE FUCK?!?!!

by Anonymousreply 17November 23, 2020 3:04 AM

[quote] Animal-themed cafe was already done in Fleabag by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Couldn't they think up some other idea?

"Miranda" was well before "Fleabag," dear; and this is the official American version of "Fleabag."

Try again.

by Anonymousreply 18November 23, 2020 3:04 AM

Tom Ellis was on Miranda. Remember, he was also on EastEnders and Lucifer. Hot AF!

by Anonymousreply 19November 23, 2020 3:07 AM

Is Leslie the Dishwasher/Bus Boy?

by Anonymousreply 20November 23, 2020 3:10 AM

[quote]"Miranda" was well before "Fleabag," dear; and this is the official American version of "Fleabag."

No. This is the official American version of "Miranda."

by Anonymousreply 21November 23, 2020 3:11 AM

[quote]"Miranda" was well before "Fleabag," dear; and this is the official American version of "Fleabag."

This is NOT Miranda. Miranda ran a joke shop. In the first episode, she is seen licking a chocolate penis. Miranda was funny because she was so naturally dorky. Mayim can't pull that off. Miranda had a funny girl sidekick named Stevie. Don't see a funny girl sidekick. Miranda was pure slapstick. Haven't seen that in this commercial.

by Anonymousreply 22November 23, 2020 3:12 AM

The only show where she worked as the lead was Blossom. She doesn’t have what it takes to be the star as an adult.

by Anonymousreply 23November 23, 2020 3:13 AM

I loved the original Miranda. This might be ok.

by Anonymousreply 24November 23, 2020 3:14 AM

[quote]Call Me Kat is an upcoming American comedy television series based on the British sitcom Miranda by Miranda Hart.

Wikipedia.

by Anonymousreply 25November 23, 2020 3:14 AM

Agree with this poster ^^^.

Half of Miranda was her pratfalling on her great big bottom.

by Anonymousreply 26November 23, 2020 3:14 AM

Honor Blackman should have had a series called "Call Me Pussy."

by Anonymousreply 27November 23, 2020 3:15 AM

Leslie was on the FOX sitcom The Cool Kids a year or two ago. Loved it, wish it had lasted. With DL fave Thelma Harper!

by Anonymousreply 28November 23, 2020 3:21 AM

A 39 year old?

by Anonymousreply 29November 23, 2020 3:43 AM

This is how you do a commercial if you want an audience.

by Anonymousreply 31November 23, 2020 4:16 AM

The big difference is Miranda's height and British-style teefs.

by Anonymousreply 32November 23, 2020 4:18 AM

Will Cheyenne Jackson be the Tom Ellis character?

by Anonymousreply 33November 23, 2020 2:49 PM

R28, 'The Cool Kids' was a cute show. A mindless, old school sitcom...I wish someone else would've picked it up.

by Anonymousreply 34November 23, 2020 3:10 PM

[quote] This is actually a remake of the Britcom, Miranda.

Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 35November 23, 2020 3:23 PM

Are they trying to make her as unflattering as possible, is that part of the plot? I mean I hope this isn’t her on a good day.

by Anonymousreply 36November 23, 2020 3:24 PM

Miranda was one of the worst things ever made in the history of television. It’s right up there with Mrs Brown’s Boys. Embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 37November 23, 2020 3:24 PM

I'm worried about this as I adored Miranda! It was literally the most cheering thing on TV when it aired. I have high expectations.

by Anonymousreply 38November 23, 2020 3:24 PM

If it's a Chuck Lorre show, it's guaranteed to be not funny but will run for at least a decade or more.

by Anonymousreply 39November 23, 2020 3:29 PM

R2 is correct...IMDB confirms it's an "American Adaptation" of 'Miranda'. I don't see the parallels, but they obviously don't want to make the carbon copy mistake that so many imported shows have made. I'm looking at you, Americanized 'Kath & Kim'.

by Anonymousreply 41November 23, 2020 3:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 42November 23, 2020 3:55 PM

[quote]If it's a Chuck Lorre show, it's guaranteed to be not funny but will run for at least a decade or more.

It's not.

by Anonymousreply 43November 23, 2020 4:52 PM

hate this disgusting zionist cunt

by Anonymousreply 44November 23, 2020 5:13 PM

Damn I was hoping this was an American adaptation of Fleabag and not Miranda. This means no anal sex scene.

by Anonymousreply 45November 23, 2020 5:32 PM

You want to see Blossom get buttfucked? Whoa!

by Anonymousreply 46November 23, 2020 5:39 PM

In my opionation this will be a smash hit like Molloy.

by Anonymousreply 47November 23, 2020 5:44 PM

I thought Leslie Nielsen was dead. And Swoosie Kurtz was living in the jungle in her private Angkor Wat.

by Anonymousreply 50December 2, 2020 9:57 PM

They should have called it, “Not Miranda”.

by Anonymousreply 51December 2, 2020 9:58 PM

She speaks well of you, R50.

by Anonymousreply 52December 2, 2020 10:02 PM

I've put this on my Must Miss list.

by Anonymousreply 53December 3, 2020 6:57 PM

I always think she probably smells like spoiled breast milk.

by Anonymousreply 54December 3, 2020 7:01 PM

I would have preferred her as part of an ensemble cast of an American remake of "Call the Midwife."

by Anonymousreply 55December 3, 2020 7:04 PM

In order for this type of humor to work, there needs to be an essence of kooky. Miranda Hart was funny because you could believe her kooky personality. She allowed her friend in the show to continually call her "Queen Kong". A young Barbra Streisand could have pulled this off. A young Liza Minnelli could have pulled this off. Mayim? Not so much.

by Anonymousreply 56December 3, 2020 7:06 PM

Does anyone really believe that Swoosie Kurtz could be Mayim's mother?

And the height difference between Mayim and Cheyenne is disturbing. It looks like the Jolly Green Giant and Sweet Pea.

by Anonymousreply 57December 3, 2020 7:34 PM

Swoosie is a trouper - she's 76.

by Anonymousreply 58December 4, 2020 12:30 AM

When does this mess premier?

by Anonymousreply 59December 4, 2020 12:35 AM

[quote]Swoosie is a trouper - she's 76.

Her last face lift made her look 176. I've seen mummies that had tighter wraps than her.

by Anonymousreply 60December 4, 2020 12:36 AM

[quote]When does this mess premier?

Didn't you watch the trailer? Sunday January 3 on Faux. (Which between you and me, I'm surprised Mayim has stooped to Faux.)

by Anonymousreply 61December 4, 2020 12:41 AM

Mayim never has to work again as she can live off big bang residuals for the rest of her life. And I imagine she saves thousands a year on food since she breastfeeds her children.

by Anonymousreply 62December 4, 2020 12:44 AM

[quote]Mayim never has to work again as she can live off big bang residuals for the rest of her life.

She was already set for life off her Blossom residuals. That shit ran for FIVE seasons.

by Anonymousreply 63December 4, 2020 12:49 AM

Swoosie Kurtz looks deformed by all that surgery. It's been difficult to watch her face over the last 20 years or so.

by Anonymousreply 64December 4, 2020 12:49 AM

Waiting for the very special episode of Call Me Kat.

by Anonymousreply 65December 4, 2020 12:55 AM

Will it be sponsored by Meow Mix?

by Anonymousreply 66December 4, 2020 12:57 AM

[quote]Swoosie is a trouper - she's 76.

They could've gotten Linda Lavin.

by Anonymousreply 67December 4, 2020 12:59 AM

She wants the show to be successful, r67.

by Anonymousreply 68December 4, 2020 2:10 AM

Ha!!

by Anonymousreply 69December 4, 2020 4:23 AM

R67, Sorry honey, I’m working at NBC, only one sitcom at a time for me...!

by Anonymousreply 70December 4, 2020 5:04 AM

It’s sad that she can’t even pass for 39.

by Anonymousreply 71December 4, 2020 5:07 AM

She is 44. I'll give it a shot maybe. It looks kind of funny.

by Anonymousreply 72December 4, 2020 5:46 AM

It would be hilarious if it were the intro show to Prodigal Son...

by Anonymousreply 73December 4, 2020 7:59 AM

I want to like it (and on paper has a good supporting cast), but I have to agree about Mayim - she doesn’t project the quirkiness factor enough.

Is she a recycled Kimmie Schmidt?

It’s set in Louisville, and could really play off that, but I don’t really get a sense of “fish out of water” from the trailer.

by Anonymousreply 74December 4, 2020 8:10 AM

🙈 [italic] Let's not, and say we did.

by Anonymousreply 75December 4, 2020 8:16 AM

Isn't she a PhD brainiac? I mean, she made gazillions on a hit show, great! But this new one seems quite stupid - wouldn't she want to put her mind to something intelligent and quality? It's weird.

by Anonymousreply 76December 4, 2020 11:34 AM

Bland casting. Improbable characters coming together. No sexual tension. Cats. I hated everything about it. I can’t wait to watch!

by Anonymousreply 77December 4, 2020 11:54 AM

I'd rather give my dick paper cuts than watch this shit.

by Anonymousreply 78December 4, 2020 11:58 AM

Only two weeks to go until the premiere!

by Anonymousreply 79December 12, 2020 6:06 AM

This will make anything by Chuck Lorre looks like Ibsen.

by Anonymousreply 80December 12, 2020 6:16 AM

Mayim has become obese.

If she dropped 30 pounds, maybe this could work.

by Anonymousreply 81December 12, 2020 6:50 AM

R81 You just don't get it.

Part of the charm of the original UK 'Miranda' was that she wasn't slim, pretty or socially acceptable physically (or socially).

By the by you're a big bitch.

by Anonymousreply 82December 12, 2020 8:21 AM

She’s drinking her own titty milk in the bed she shared with her giant kids

by Anonymousreply 83December 12, 2020 8:36 AM

That's Alicia Silverstone, R83.

Mayim has a degree from UCLA in mathematics, is really cool apparently, and she made a fortune on HIMYM. Mayim really doesn't give a fuck about her look or she's accepted that she was never and will never be a Hollywood beauty. She was on the ugly side of cute during her Blossom years. She also doesn't throw it in our face like Lens Dunham with body positivity messages or flaunting her weight or lecturing us on accepting the unattractive. I like her . I saw the billboard for her show and the tagline was "Disappointing Mothers Since 1982", which btw, quickly replaced Kim Catrell's ad for her new show. I guess that didn't take off. I will give Mayim credit for going for 39 when she's a hard 44/45 - she has some DL in her.

by Anonymousreply 84December 12, 2020 1:33 PM

[quote]R37 Miranda was one of the worst things ever made in the history of television. It’s right up there with Mrs Brown’s Boys. Embarrassing.

My mom watches “Miranda” because they show it on PBS type affiliates over here.

It sets my teeth on edge. I want the lead to be run over by a bus or to walk over a collapsing bridge so it all just ends.

by Anonymousreply 85December 12, 2020 2:39 PM

[quote]Mayim has a degree from UCLA in mathematics, is really cool apparently, and she made a fortune on HIMYM.

How did she manage that? She was never on that show.

by Anonymousreply 86December 12, 2020 3:49 PM

[quote] Sorry honey, I’m working at NBC, only one sitcom at a time for me...!

Cunt Lavin is back at CBS - B Positive, yet another Lorre mess, is on CBS.

by Anonymousreply 87December 12, 2020 3:53 PM

I'm not the only one who thinks Mayim looks like Margaret Hamilton, right? But with less warmth or something.

by Anonymousreply 88December 12, 2020 4:30 PM

I wonder if Ted Wass ever fucked Joey Lawrence? The 80s were a hotbed of sitcom sex.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 89December 12, 2020 4:30 PM

I thought Miranda was hilarious in “Spy” with Melissa McCarthy but hated her in “Call The Midwife”.

I tried one episode of the sitcom and couldn’t get through it.

by Anonymousreply 90December 12, 2020 5:34 PM

I loved Chummy in CTM but after watching it for years also realize she may have been the most stereotypically British character on the show.

As in, the way Americans think of British people.

by Anonymousreply 91December 12, 2020 5:40 PM

Goddamn that bitch is ugly

by Anonymousreply 92December 12, 2020 5:48 PM

[quote]I loved Chummy in CTM but after watching it for years also realize she may have been the most stereotypically British character on the show.

But that was who the character was in the book. The woman who Chummy was based on came from an upper crust British family. She never really fit into that environment so she became a midwife. Her parents were appalled that she worked among the lower class in London's East End. Miranda was really the only actress who could portray the woman. In the original book, they had to find her a special bicycle because she was too tall for their regular bicycles.

Gossip has it that Miranda got pissed off at the producers of CTM and left the show. I'd like to know what the issue was that made her leave. Maybe they wanted her to play the lesbian character that Emerald Fennel later played.

by Anonymousreply 93December 12, 2020 6:16 PM

No fucking way am I watching that shit,

by Anonymousreply 94December 12, 2020 6:31 PM

The guy who played Chummy’s cop husband must have been pissed Miranda decided not to return to CTM. I think they kept his character on for one more year in a reduced role.

by Anonymousreply 95December 12, 2020 6:48 PM

R93 I read the books too and yes, MH was the perfect person to play Chummy.

I always wondered what happened. She left, and then was supposed to come back on a more recurring basis, but then they announced her schedule wouldn't permit it. Just as well because half of the people she was originally on with have also left the show.

I do wish Jenny Lee and the little nurse that became a nun and went crazy will come back before the end of the show's run. And the Dishy Vicar, of course.

by Anonymousreply 96December 12, 2020 7:01 PM

[quote]The guy who played Chummy’s cop husband must have been pissed Miranda decided not to return to CTM. I think they kept his character on for one more year in a reduced role.

I think it's the same thing with the dishy vicar that had to leave the show when Barbara decided not to return and they killed her off. And that actor is Trixie's real life husband.

by Anonymousreply 97December 12, 2020 7:02 PM

Lucky Trixie for getting that hot piece.

by Anonymousreply 98December 12, 2020 7:08 PM

PBS is actually showing the CTM Christmas special ON Christmas this year.

by Anonymousreply 99December 12, 2020 8:47 PM

I worship the series Miranda. I discovered it in 2015 on Hulu and I bought the series set on DVD and I've watched it three times. It shouldn't work because it's so juvenile, but it does work and is hilarious. Miranda Hart has talent to spare.

Mayim Bialik is just witch faced.

by Anonymousreply 100December 12, 2020 8:55 PM

Anyway, this will bomb and be canceled by March.

by Anonymousreply 101December 12, 2020 8:56 PM

R101 Cancelled and burned off? Pity.

by Anonymousreply 102December 12, 2020 9:43 PM

R99 ???

They usually do.

It's the regular run of shows they delay. UK gets them in Feb/Mar and for some reason they delay them here until May.

by Anonymousreply 103December 12, 2020 9:43 PM

[quote]It's the regular run of shows they delay. UK gets them in Feb/Mar and for some reason they delay them here until May.

PBS freely admitted that they always held Downton Abbey until a time when donations were low so that they could raise money off of it. I think it was played in January?

by Anonymousreply 104December 12, 2020 10:34 PM

R104 Yes, that was somewhat understandable, plus they never had to compete with the launch of fall season in the US.

But them holding back CTM makes a bit less sense.

by Anonymousreply 105December 12, 2020 11:17 PM

So, is ugly still acceptable to make fun of, to degrade, shame and discriminate?

by Anonymousreply 106December 12, 2020 11:27 PM

She looks 49.

by Anonymousreply 109December 13, 2020 12:59 AM

Bialik holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA.

R84, you may be thinking of Danica McKellar, who has a degree in mathematics, also from UCLA

by Anonymousreply 110December 13, 2020 1:03 AM

My God, it's horrid. A spit take in the first two minutes!

by Anonymousreply 111January 4, 2021 12:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 112January 4, 2021 12:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 113January 4, 2021 12:07 AM

I’m enjoying it. I’m a little perplexed as to the casting of Cheyenne as straight, but I guess why not.

In my opinionation.........Call Me Krap!

by Anonymousreply 117January 4, 2021 12:57 AM

Just watched it and was surprised by how mediocre it was. A very weak pilot. It won’t be long for this world.

by Anonymousreply 118January 4, 2021 1:10 AM

I'm sorry. I just can't get past her face. That horrific face just sucks the comedy out of every scene.

by Anonymousreply 119January 4, 2021 1:17 AM

I thought it was nice how it paid homage to the days when Fox would air shitty mid-season replacements.

Apparently, both Jim Parsons and his husband are credited separately as executive producers (along with Maxim).

by Anonymousreply 120January 4, 2021 1:24 AM

Oops I missed the first episode.....

by Anonymousreply 121January 4, 2021 1:33 AM

Too much Kat, not enough interesting supporting characters. Too much camera mugging, too. Miranda seemed to make the mugging less intrusive.

by Anonymousreply 122January 4, 2021 1:46 AM

I have to trust my Mayim's judgment, with all her Big Bang money she doesn't need to work, so I'm hoping that she picked something that will be funny and intelligent. So I'm going to give it a chance.

by Anonymousreply 123January 4, 2021 2:28 AM

Extra"my" in there I didn't notice lol

by Anonymousreply 124January 4, 2021 2:29 AM

[quote]I'm sorry. I just can't get past her face. That horrific face just sucks the comedy out of every scene.

It truly is hard to look at. And there was way too much mugging for the camera.

by Anonymousreply 125January 4, 2021 2:30 AM

I hope Swoosie's new face soon settles down onto her 76 year old body...

by Anonymousreply 126January 4, 2021 2:32 AM

I loved it. Best Fox sitcom since The Cool Kids (with Thelma Harper and Beverly Leslie).

by Anonymousreply 127January 4, 2021 3:19 AM

Who on earth thought that anything about this would be appealing? It’s eyeball repellent.

by Anonymousreply 128January 4, 2021 4:00 AM

I will watch this, I don't mind a non-Lorre sitcom. Plus I was bummed that Single Parents was cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 129January 4, 2021 4:58 AM

Swoosie Kurtz looks gorg!

by Anonymousreply 130January 4, 2021 5:20 AM

I follow her on IG and will give the show a chance, especially if the main character is Jewish. Hollywood has so many Jews but few are actually “Jewish” besides an occasional Hanukkah joke. And she finds a way to be both an observant, orthodox Jew and yet also pro gay.

by Anonymousreply 131January 4, 2021 6:13 AM

R106, it was in the 80s. Some folks are still stuck there. (The bullied become the bullies...)

by Anonymousreply 132January 4, 2021 6:39 AM

If she talks to the camera ONE MORE TIME...

by Anonymousreply 133January 4, 2021 6:50 AM

Just not funny enough. Much of Mayim’s physical humor seems forced, and yeah, too much camera mugging. By the mid-point in the show, the writers seemed to have forgotten about the cats.

The supporting cast is fine, but not used enough— and the pilot episode is not the place to notice that. I wanted to like this show, which makes it even more disappointing. I could never offer a recommendation for this.

by Anonymousreply 134January 4, 2021 6:51 AM

Is Cheyenne a chef in this one?

by Anonymousreply 135January 4, 2021 8:05 AM

Not a fan of "breaking the fourth wall". Nice to see Cheyenne Jackson and Leslie Jordan, though.

by Anonymousreply 136January 4, 2021 8:52 AM

It was a cute pilot for what it was. Will it get cancelled? Most definitely, unless they can't film new pilots for consideration, for some reason. It has much of the same feel of the original 'Miranda', except Mayim isn't Miranda.

And yes, Swoozie's face is...well, it's hers since she paid for it.

by Anonymousreply 137January 4, 2021 12:02 PM

It seems like this show is based on Miranda but they seem to be heavily influenced by Fleabag, both in tone and some storylines. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Bialak is playing too glamorous to be a Miranda type. Miranda is awkward and witty in a different way.

There’s a chance this could find its footing, I’ll give it a few more episodes.

by Anonymousreply 138January 5, 2021 2:52 AM

I switched channels after about 10 minutes. The “asides” to the camera/audience were annoying. A little of that goes a very long way.

by Anonymousreply 139January 5, 2021 3:24 AM

Swoozie’s plastic face paled in comparison to the fact that you could see all the bones in her chest. The poor woman is 85 pounds tops. Wow. I turned it off after the tenth time Mayim mugged to the camera. She’s way overacting in this. And I liked her in Big Bang.

Does Kat fall over all the time like big Miranda does?

by Anonymousreply 141January 5, 2021 4:58 AM

Mayim's hair looks cute. Is Kat basically a perimenopausal Blossom?

by Anonymousreply 142January 7, 2021 12:47 PM

Call me FAT

by Anonymousreply 143January 7, 2021 12:56 PM

Cheyanne is playing a straight guy, or at least bi/pan character. I don't know what to say. I hate Big Bang but I sympathize with this lady and Leslie and the whole cast.

I'll give it a chance, but it wasn't funny at all. I mean, a clumsy bachelorette in 2021?

by Anonymousreply 144January 7, 2021 1:31 PM

[quote] This is NOT Miranda.

The credits literally says it's based on Miranda, whatever that show is. So yes, it is based on that.

by Anonymousreply 145January 7, 2021 1:35 PM

I cannot believe this got greenlit. Someone read the script and said "Love it, film it!" Someone directed this and said "brilliant performances! Ship it!" Someone watched it at said "brilliant! Air it!"

I have never seen anything more shiteous on TV, and I've had to sit through several episodes of BBT and 2 Broke Girls. It had zero laughs, zero wit, zero good acting. Felt like it was trying to be Fleabag but failed miserably. The asides could've worked, but Blossom either doesn't have the acting chops for it, or the director is really bad at their job because they made it even worse. The laughtrack was like the bonus kernels of corn in this turd.

And yes, I was forced to watch it because they sandwiched it between football and the preview of The Great North (which I did like, but needs refining).

by Anonymousreply 146January 7, 2021 1:42 PM

[quote] She was already set for life off her Blossom residuals.

Not true at all. Watch this video. She talks about auditioning for Big Bang because she couldn't afford healthcare and she even jokes about not getting a lot of money off Blossom.

If Kim Cattrall couldn't retire on her Sex And The City residuals, it doesn't make much sense that Mayim could from Blossom.

[quote] If Kim Cattrall couldn't retire on her Sex And The City residuals, it doesn't make much sense that Mayim could from Blossom.

HBO is not network tv. HBO works on a very fixed residual plan that is very low. Mayim says in that video they didn't make that much money back then, but BBT sure gives a lot of residuals. Network TV is the paradise for that.

by Anonymousreply 149January 7, 2021 1:56 PM

Breaking the fourth wall is the laziest form of writing. If we can’t understand what’s going on in the character’s life/mind without it, it’s because you’re not doing your writing job well.

I caught like 3 minutes of the show and Bialik’s character was unfunny, the humor mostly physical, and she looked at the camera like 4 times. Why do shows love to make unfunny socially awkward characters? We’ve seen this done the right way already with other shows.

by Anonymousreply 150January 7, 2021 1:57 PM

I know one of the wardrobe people, and clothes that fit on Monday do not fit on Friday, MAYIM.

by Anonymousreply 151January 7, 2021 1:59 PM

Terrible show and found this hilarious

[quote]Fox premiered Call Me Kat tonight at 8:00. I just saw a commercial for it at 8:52 that said “millions have fallen in love with Kat...” It is far too early for the ratings to be in. Tomorrow morning, at the earliest, they’ll have preliminary numbers. I’m calling bullshit.

[quote] Co-starring Leslie Jordan as the sissy eldergay, Cheyenne Jackson as the meth gay, and featuring Swoosie Kurtz as the ginger martini. Laugh track provided by Chuck Lorre Productions. This winter on Fox! (winter release not an indication of no confidence).

And special mention of the angry hetero male and the look on his face if it's renewed for a second season.

by Anonymousreply 153January 7, 2021 2:49 PM

Well, Dr. Bialik could always teach...

by Anonymousreply 154January 7, 2021 2:53 PM

Why are you all saying Cheyenne is gay? He's literally her love interest in the show.

by Anonymousreply 155January 7, 2021 2:54 PM

I usually stay pretty quiet here (for obvious reasons) but I look just like her, a little heavier. Sometimes people stop me in restaurants or on a plane and ask for my autograph because they think I am her. I'm glad she's super smart but it's too bad she is also kind of crazy. When I was much younger I looked like Janis Joplin and that was much better. This thread makes me sad.

by Anonymousreply 156January 7, 2021 3:07 PM

r156, ignore the high schoolers here. You sound lovely.

by Anonymousreply 157January 7, 2021 3:25 PM

I think it's funny. Is there room for improvement? Well, duh. It's the pilot and pretty much every show needs a couple of episodes (or a whole season) to iron out the kinks.

by Anonymousreply 158January 7, 2021 3:31 PM

R156, are you single? Lesbian?

by Anonymousreply 159January 7, 2021 6:23 PM

Who is that old man actor on the show who is clearly gay? He’s been on other shows.

by Anonymousreply 162January 7, 2021 11:14 PM

[R157] Thanks I needed that. It actually made me feel a little better today. :) [R159] How'd you know?

by Anonymousreply 163January 7, 2021 11:27 PM

R163, I have to ask when I see a winsome post on DL.

Are you the one in LA?

by Anonymousreply 164January 8, 2021 5:55 AM

2nd ep was worse than the pilot. Sad, because this is a talented cast. It's like the American version of 'Kath & Kim' all over, except the 'K&K' adaptation has its funny moments.

by Anonymousreply 165January 8, 2021 9:08 AM

You are brave, or really bored, r165. I'd rather eat out of the litter box than watch another second of this Kat mess. It is fucking 2021 and we're still doing laugh tracks⁉️

by Anonymousreply 166January 8, 2021 1:17 PM

I want to like it because I like Mayim, but it doesn’t work. I know the show is supposed to focus on her character, but that seems to be the problem. The supporting cast as a whole isn’t working for me, either.

by Anonymousreply 167January 8, 2021 1:21 PM

[quote] It is fucking 2021 and we're still doing laugh tracks⁉️

I reluctantly watched a few minutes of the second episode and couldn't help but notice that canned laughter was used after just about every line that someone spoke. Since there was very little that was even remotely funny, the poor guy assigned to adding the laugh track must have given up trying to figure out what was supposed to be a punchline and decided to add it to EVERYTHING.

by Anonymousreply 168January 8, 2021 1:23 PM

R166, indeed I was bored at work when I watched it. (I work overnight alone, so not a lot going on.) My mum watched the first ep and told me how much funnier Leslie Jordan is on his IG stories than on this show. That's an indicator right there that the writing and production are to blame. When someone is 100x more amusing just being themselves and uploading their ramblings for free, something's wrong.

by Anonymousreply 169January 8, 2021 1:49 PM

I watched it but stopped due to an attack of diarrhea. Did I miss anything?

by Anonymousreply 170January 8, 2021 9:24 PM

I really want to like this. All actors are top notch, but such a terrible and unfunny show. Leslie is basically a bland version of himself in this, very underused as a sassy old queen.

I'll still stick with it like I did with that Fran Drescher show, which got better before being axed.

by Anonymousreply 171January 9, 2021 3:23 PM

R171, which Fran show? Living with Fran, Happily Divorced, or Indebted? She's had so many short-lived shows. LOL!!!

diarrhea.. now THAT'S funny.

by Anonymousreply 181January 14, 2021 10:38 PM

Not saying this will happen with this show, but I always give a new sitcom about 6 episodes. The first few eps of Frasier and Will and Grace are unwatchable. Both ended up being great to decent sitcoms.

by Anonymousreply 182January 14, 2021 11:36 PM

r176 Agreed, Mayim does seem nice

by Anonymousreply 183January 15, 2021 9:55 AM

I finally got around to watching the first two episodes on Hulu last night and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not nearly as bad as I expected. I don't think Bialik is the greatest actress, but I enjoyed the premise and the some of the cleverness of the asides to the audience. The cast is decent, too, although Swoosie is difficult to look at.

Vanessa Lachey is looking more and more like Vanessa Williams every day.

by Anonymousreply 184January 16, 2021 6:16 PM

Dreadful. Appalling. Unfunny. Embarrassing for all concerned. Bialik is certainly giving it her all, but watching her try to land jokes that just aren't funny is painful and a lesson in "be careful what you wish for." The fourth wall device is distracting and often poorly executed. The entire project appears to be the work of a largely lazy writing staff, made up of--apparently--people who graduated from the Acme School of Plumbing and Writing. They're all a bunch of hacks.

Cheyenne Jackson is easy on the eyes but it's hard to measure him as an actor since they give him very little to do. And, sorry, but there's no way in hell that a stud like Jackson's character would ever be interested in short and dumpy Bialik. And no amount of snappy dialogue will ever fix that.

by Anonymousreply 185January 17, 2021 6:48 AM

Mayim Bialik will be guest hosting Jeopardy.

by Anonymousreply 186January 17, 2021 9:08 AM

R186 “I’ll take vaccines that cause autism for $1600, Mayim!”

by Anonymousreply 187January 17, 2021 10:36 AM

The problem with this show is that Mayim hasn't perfected the subtlety that Miranda Hart has when she does a double take to the camera. When Miranda does it, you feel like you're standing next to her and sharing a secret joke. Mayim can't generate that intimacy.

by Anonymousreply 188January 21, 2021 7:53 PM

Somehow, it doesn’t work. I know Mayim has played awkward for a while but she’s not really. You know who might have worked? Charlyne Yi. Mean, Tig Notaro too but then it would have to be a lesbian sit com.

by Anonymousreply 189January 21, 2021 8:01 PM

I think the difference, too, is Miranda is a comedian, which I think gives her a different sense of timing and delivery called for in this type of role. Mayim’s energy feels forced. Plus, the writing is just not good. I’d be surprised if this is renewed.

by Anonymousreply 190January 21, 2021 9:07 PM

You dudes are being awfully harsh on a brand new show. My partner and I watched the first 3 episodes last night, and chuckled a few times. I think it has potential. It definitely needs to feature more Cheyenne. I love his long, lean body.

by Anonymousreply 191January 21, 2021 10:21 PM

There are approximately 5 million shows available at our fingertips. Why waste your time on a "comedy" that made you chuckle a few times?

by Anonymousreply 192January 22, 2021 12:31 AM

How can there be so many wonderful writers, directors, and actors and yet this hideous shit is on TV?

by Anonymousreply 193January 22, 2021 1:11 AM

The most I can say about it is that I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would, though it is still pretty terrible.

I loved cool kids. It had the potential to be Golden Girls-esque.

by Anonymousreply 194January 22, 2021 2:10 AM

This is what you watch when your totally bored and nothing else is on the planet.

by Anonymousreply 195January 22, 2021 2:15 AM

CMK is the US' idea of twee sitcom entertainment. And for that it's pretty fun. The UK rather goes for slapstick entertainment (Mr. Bean, Miranda, Mrs. Brown's Boys, for example) as a crowd pleaser.

There is no scientific formula what works and what doesn't. Otherwise, all the US would have is variations of Friends, Seinfeld, and Cheers. And The Big Bang Theory, of course.

by Anonymousreply 196January 22, 2021 3:53 AM

Last night's ep was slightly better. Lots of Swoosie...I wonder if she wears a wig or extensions on the show, as her hair looked great last night.

by Anonymousreply 197January 22, 2021 1:28 PM

Does Bette Midler play her mother?

[quote]I wonder if she wears a wig or extensions on the show, as her hair looked great last night.

It's a good thing her hair looked good, because her face looked like stretched leather.

by Anonymousreply 199January 22, 2021 6:01 PM

Episode 4 sucks. It goes too dramatic. I don't remember Miranda's psychiatrist episode being that dire.

And they're not using Cheyenne as effectively as they used Tom Ellis in Miranda. Leslie Jordan is getting more screen time than Cheyenne.

by Anonymousreply 200January 22, 2021 8:38 PM

God, Jack Plotnick looks old. I love him but he looks ancient here.

by Anonymousreply 204February 1, 2021 4:43 AM

I wanted to hate this show and wrote a mocking post above before I watched it.

Watched the first episode on Hulu and was surprised at how much I liked it - it's not a great show but it's certainly watchable during Quarantine

Swoosie Kurtz looks like some Republican anorexic bobble-head with excessive surgery, hair extensions, the whole nine yards, but she's still a good comedic actress.

Cheyenne is more likable in this than in anything I've seen him in before.

Leslie Jordan is muted; he hasn't found his groove in this show yet.

Kayla Pratt as Randi, a cafe employee, is the sassy black girl - like Jordan, they have figured out how to use her or make her seem real yet.

Mayim Bialik is the surprise to me - I never saw "Blossum" or watched her in the "Big Bang Theory" - she's engaging.

I'm still a little repulsed at the idea of serving food with all those cats around....

by Anonymousreply 205February 1, 2021 4:47 AM

Just reboot it as Blossom the Spinster Years.

by Anonymousreply 206February 1, 2021 4:50 AM

I want to like the show, it's practically a who's who of gay. The worst aspect is how it GRINDS ON. The writing is so stale and basic. Everything is TELEGRAPHED so loudly and clumsily they might as well be shouting the the dialogue. And the addressing the camera thing has to STOP.

by Anonymousreply 207February 1, 2021 4:51 AM

Her alleged dream was to open a cat cafe, but she doesn't have a cat of her own, and doesn't allow the cafe's kitties to roam up the stairs into her apartment or sleep in her bed. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

A real-life cat lady who lives above a cat cafe she owns would be SURROUNDED by cats 24/7. They wouldn't be a tacked-on punchline, they'd be an integral and inseparable part of her daily life.

by Anonymousreply 211February 1, 2021 5:08 AM

I’m ok with the conceit that CJ is playing straight, but there’s no way the audience believes he’s hooked up with a schlub like Mayim, unless he comes out as gay.

Btw, my friend plays a bit part as the hotel receptionist, and she’s such a funny, joyous, crazy-ass (the good kind!) person IRL. Super, super gay ally.

by Anonymousreply 223February 1, 2021 1:15 PM

So Hulued a few more episodes and I keep finding Mayim acting in this disconcerting as she doesn’t look comfortable at all. I think I’ve finally figured out what’s going on. Off camera a gun is being trained on one of her children and she’s being forced to act in this show. She is desperate, very desperate to save her child, but that desperation bleeds through and she can never comfortably convey the comedy and lighthearted whimsy of this character. She is trying, really trying folks, but the weight of the situation is just too heavy.

And by the way, what’s up with all the spit takes, they haven’t been funny since The Three Stooges?

by Anonymousreply 224February 1, 2021 1:34 PM

I think Mayim is trying to channel Miranda Hart, and it’s not really working. The supporting cast, although good on other things, doesn’t seem to work together here.

by Anonymousreply 225February 1, 2021 4:19 PM

I hope it’s canceled soon. Just watching it was embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 226February 1, 2021 4:42 PM

[quote]I think Mayim is trying to channel Miranda Hart, and it’s not really working.

Exactly!!! It worked with Miranda because she is a lovable dork. And she was so dorky that the talking to the camera worked with her. PLUS, she always treated it like a "show". Several episodes start out with her doing a camera monologue and then her saying, "On with the show."

Mayim can't make any of that work for her.

And the sassy black girl isn't working. The original dynamic in Miranda was that the Stevie character was more straight-laced and hardnosed and kept the shop running. She was the sensible one.

Swoosie Kurtz is funny, but she's not given the same interaction with Kat that Patricia Hodge had with Miranda. Part of why Miranda was so funny is because you can see that the mother made Miranda a bit loopy.

Leslie Jordan's character doesn't work because in Miranda, the Clive character worked in the bar. So you only got two minutes of his character. And his lines were more bitchy, whereas Leslie Jordan is more Southern folksy. And the Clive character was cut from the show (or maybe the actor got a better gig which is one of the reasons characters disappear from Brit shows).

Miranda specifically said that she was tired of seeing shows with ugly men dating beautiful women so in her show, she was going to date a beautiful man. I'm not a Cheyenne fan. He looks a bit too rough in the face (sorry, but I always think of poz face when I look at him). Tom Ellis could make butter melt on Miranda.

by Anonymousreply 227February 1, 2021 10:48 PM

The sassy black girl is such an embarrassing stereotype of a character. Whose idea was that?

And Mayim has always claimed to eat all these supposedly healthy foods, yet she could stand to lose a few pounds.

by Anonymousreply 228February 2, 2021 12:09 AM

Why don't you gays talk about the other new s(h)itcom, B Positive? DL faves Linda Lavin and Dr. Adam Brinker have bit parts in it. I just can't stand the two leads. Sad-looking guy and awful-voiced girl. OMFG!

by Anonymousreply 235February 13, 2021 2:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 242February 17, 2021 8:26 AM

It's not terrible, but what it does lack is Miranda's stage presence.

by Anonymousreply 243February 17, 2021 8:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 245February 17, 2021 1:05 PM

I was curious and watched.

You can see where the British version might have been good, but this one is just not funny.

I will say that Cheyanne Jackson looks better in this than he has in a long time. He doesn't quite have the manic, drawn, meth crazy eyes.

by Anonymousreply 246February 17, 2021 1:27 PM

[quote]You can see where the British version might have been good, but this one is just not funny.

The British version succeeded because Miranda Hart is a fine comedy actress. She is very adept at slapstick and able to balance it with the quirky. Mayim has stripped the show entirely of slapstick.

Miranda was able to balance the comedy with a little bit of empathy. You kind of feel sorry for her while laughing at her dorkiness. And she's able to bring in a certain amount of breathless panic which also makes her character funny. I strongly suggest watching the British version.

by Anonymousreply 247February 17, 2021 3:58 PM

The British love broad, low brow comedy. They have a stage entertainment tradition called Panto that is non-existent anywhere else, I believe. It's performing a child's play in a campy manner with some male actors playing female characters for laughs and naughty double entendres that go over the children's' heads, but the adults in the audience get it.

To adapt this for the US market you have to eliminate everything that made it, well, British, because the US audience will not respond well to it. And once you do you get the critics that complain that it's a weak rip-off of a vastly superior original. And the US market is incredibly fickle.

by Anonymousreply 248February 17, 2021 4:06 PM

What I don’t understand is they must spend millions on the rights to restage these, but then don’t use the scripts or really much else from the originals. Then why bother, this is a whole other creature all together, just make your crappy show and don’t even call it a remake?

by Anonymousreply 249February 17, 2021 4:20 PM

r249, you're right. This doesn't have enough of the original show to be considered a remake. Why did they bother?

by Anonymousreply 250February 17, 2021 4:23 PM

r249, I think the problem is the greenlit stage where you pitch the idea to investors, producers, studio execs. They respond well to established franchises that come with a built-in audience. Once you have their money and go-ahead ...

The show Call Me Scatman Carothers would have been more entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 253February 17, 2021 4:35 PM

Or they could have called it, “Call Me, Kat”, wherein she just waits for phone calls.

by Anonymousreply 254February 17, 2021 4:36 PM

Those endings where the cast waves frantically like Granny in the Beverly Hillbillies, would be better suited if they actually put up pictures and details of rescue cats who need a forever homes instead, maybe something innovative like each local market fills in with a clip. At least this god awful show would be doing something productive.

by Anonymousreply 255February 17, 2021 4:38 PM

R247 is right.

Mayim Bialik is t right for the part. She's dorky but just not relatable.

Over here in the UK most of us probably know a Miranda type character and can relate to her.

Sadly, this format didn't travel well over the pond.

by Anonymousreply 256February 17, 2021 4:39 PM

They should had called it “Call Me Kit Kat” and made it about the candy bar, much more interesting.

by Anonymousreply 257February 17, 2021 4:43 PM

The Office, All in the Family, Three's Company and Sanford and Son are all remakes of classic British sitcoms that actually worked. The same cannot be said for Call Me Kat. It makes the U.S. version of Kath and Kim look like a multi-time Emmy winner.

What was Are You Being Served called when it was remade over there?

Why is anyone still greenlighting canned laughter sitcoms? I wanted to like it, for the gay stuff, but it's just stupid. The cats are the most interesting actors.

Call Me Cat(s)

by Anonymousreply 265February 18, 2021 2:37 AM

Just saw the latest episode, I'm happily surprised that it seems to be getting better and settling down into a funny groove. The talking-to-the-camera bit seems much more relaxed, she doesn't act surprised every time she turns around, and everybody seems much more relaxed. Even the waving goodbye is good-natured and it's nice to see everyone come out for a bow.

by Anonymousreply 266February 19, 2021 4:05 AM

The show shamelessly panders to the audience in the most infantile ways. I find it excruciating. Every single thing is so cloying and cutesy, with passive aggressive "Kat" a most heinous, unlikeable lead. The lines are terrible and the actors just do "exasperated". It's a show that needs to be gently taken behind the barn and shot for the good of us all. It's the kindest thing to do.

by Anonymousreply 267February 19, 2021 7:30 AM

r266 = Mayim Bialik

R267 = Soleil Moon-Frye

by Anonymousreply 269February 19, 2021 1:49 PM

Mayim sure gets prominent sit-com roles.

"Call Me Kat" started as too rigid, too forced, too much structured character diversity. Writers were overly focused of establishing character "lanes" for the cast

Give the cast a multitude of funny lines to deliver. No need for.multiple, complicated plots per episode.

by Anonymousreply 270February 19, 2021 2:04 PM

Poor Cheyenne. In episode 8, he's reduced to talking about his pee stream.

In Miranda, the Gary character was a central character. In Call Me Kat, he's just a side character with Leslie Jordan and the snippy black girl getting more screen time than he does.

by Anonymousreply 271February 19, 2021 5:08 PM

Agreed R271. It's about degrading the hot guy to make fraus feel superior. Also the reference to posing for Playgirl. No attractive men would be chasing "Kat" like they do in this trainwreck. And the doughy dancing bartender was just pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 272February 19, 2021 5:18 PM

[quote]And the doughy dancing bartender was just pathetic.

Yeah, I didn't get that. It's obvious this show is diversity casting on steroids, but if they wanted an Asian male to take off his shirt and dance on a bar, I'm sure they could have found one with a good body.

by Anonymousreply 273February 19, 2021 5:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 275February 19, 2021 7:22 PM

Mayim Bialik is by far the worst thing about the show. Every line sounds like it’s coming from a girl who’s never acted a day in her life, and lands like a lead balloon.

Have to also agree that it’s cringeworthy to have hot guys interested in her. You’ve got an overweight 40 year old who dresses like a frump and acts weird and crazy. THAT pulls in the hot guys?

Cheyenne Jackson is actually pretty good in his role, and it’s not his fault they give him too little to do and too much of it is shit. Still, the sitcom needs a solid lead to work, and Bialik is just terrible.

by Anonymousreply 276February 21, 2021 6:00 AM

Can they maybe just have another actress wake up and think it was all a dream that it was her? Maybe the original one from the series?

by Anonymousreply 277February 21, 2021 6:03 AM

Episde 9, Cheyenne makes onion jam and sings/plays the piano with Kat. He's acting more like her gay BFF and she his fag hag. Miranda Hart needs to send a cease and desist letter to this show.

by Anonymousreply 278February 26, 2021 8:15 PM

[quote] Have to also agree that it’s cringeworthy to have hot guys interested in her. You’ve got an overweight 40 year old who dresses like a frump and acts weird and crazy. THAT pulls in the hot guys?

That is the one part that is true to the original.

Tall, dark, good looking guys fighting over Kat.

by Anonymousreply 280February 26, 2021 10:09 PM

[quote]Tall, dark, good looking guys fighting over Kat

Actually, the new boyfriend is a bit nerdy.

However, the person who thought up that basketball scene in episode 9 should be shot. Just earlier in the episode, Kat bumps into a waitress (still trying to do the Miranda Hart shtick and not very successfully) and later she's an expert basketball player. Do writers even think about character anymore?

If I were Swoosie Kurtz, I'd be pissed. She was nothing more than a walk-on in episode 9. In Miranda, Patricia Hodge is a major character. They're giving the black girl too much screen time and not focusing on the characters that make the lead character interesting: the mother and the hot but unavailable boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 281February 27, 2021 6:19 PM

The African American female character does not strike me as the type to wear sneakers, they purposely made her fashionable in a classic way, not a street way. The gift did not make sense.

It’s a cute show. Mayim is personality

by Anonymousreply 284February 28, 2021 12:56 AM

Surprisingly good. Not much bad to say. She's talented & the cast, set and concept is good. The little wink to the camera doesn't destroy it (kind of well done) and Mayim shows her versatility in portraying yet a third completely different comic character. Swoosie goes without comment, but she's great as always. Cheyenne is gorgeous and the most likeable he's ever been.

Nothing organic about this show. The phony canned laughter only exacerbates how unfunny and forced it is. Who would actually LOL at any of this?

by Anonymousreply 287February 28, 2021 6:16 AM

The original BBC show, "Miranda" is available on Hulu or Netflix, and is WAY, WAY funnier.

Call Me Kat is just lame.

😾 No, Bitch ......

Just no fuckin' no way.

by Anonymousreply 289February 28, 2021 6:28 AM

I really hate shows with canned laughter. It's so loud and distracting.

Not to mention that I can decide if a show is funny, and when to laugh. I don't need prompting.

by Anonymousreply 290February 28, 2021 6:32 AM

Are these men claiming to enjoy this show? If so, they should just go ahead and transition. You're most of the way to being a frau.

by Anonymousreply 291February 28, 2021 7:11 AM

All the episodes were taped during strict quarantine so there's no audience for all the "laughs" and they wave at nobody at the end.

by Anonymousreply 292February 28, 2021 7:43 AM

I rather like it and quarantine could not have been that strict as they are on the same stage.

by Anonymousreply 293February 28, 2021 7:52 AM

They had severe protocols about testing and only the cast and crew were allowed in the studio. No outsiders, according to the promotional materials.

by Anonymousreply 298February 28, 2021 2:29 PM

I think there could be a way to save this show by adding another element. Keep it all the same as it is, but also add the fact that she is really a cold blooded mafia sniper, and very casually have her offhandedly stalk and kill someone just tucked into the show like any other scene. That includes her breaking the 4th wall with cute little “Oh, you caught me, my bad!” thrown in with a chuckle.

by Anonymousreply 299February 28, 2021 2:38 PM

[quote] They had severe protocols about testing and only the cast and crew were allowed in the studio. No outsiders, according to the promotional materials.

I think that might be the problem. This is the type of show that REQUIRES a live audience for reaction and timing. If they had an actual audience maybe they would've realized that so much of it just isn't working. I have no problem with actual studio audience laughter, even if its sweetened, but fully canned laughter is annoying.

by Anonymousreply 300February 28, 2021 3:09 PM

Seriously go watch Miranda on streaming instead.

by Anonymousreply 301February 28, 2021 4:13 PM

Episode 10 has Leslie Jordan taking off his clothes. They steal the Nathan Lane-Love!Valor!Compassion! idea of nude beneath an apron. It's not a pretty sight.

And once again, our Cheyenne is reduced to a walk-on with about 3 lines. I bet he's glad he has a good agent who got him the billing "And Cheyenne Jackson" because he's barely in any of the episodes. Once again, more story line goes to the sassy black girl.

by Anonymousreply 302March 5, 2021 10:39 PM

Leslie Jordan nude! Eeeek!

by Anonymousreply 303March 5, 2021 11:06 PM

OK, so they shoot down music that goes on later, but it’s OK to have outdoor music that will be ten times louder?

by Anonymousreply 304March 5, 2021 11:35 PM

Leslie Jordan claims to have a beautiful pecker.

Holy fuck, if people on here are recommending Miranda over this show, it's truly dire.

Miranda was fucking awful. On the level of 'Mrs Brown's Boys.'

by Anonymousreply 309March 6, 2021 5:26 AM

It's just a fun, stupid show. It isn't political which is nice. Mayim is a cute dork, Leslie Jordan is as fun as ever, and the bartender is hot. I love the end credit scenes where all of the actors break character and wave goodbye!

by Anonymousreply 310March 6, 2021 6:05 AM

Episode 11 - all about the sassy black girl. Poor Cheyenne doesn't get any plots revolving around him.

by Anonymousreply 311March 13, 2021 3:01 PM

For a show set in a cat cafe there’s an underwhelming amount of actual cat content, so far bags of cat food have had more exposure than actual pussy.

by Anonymousreply 312March 13, 2021 3:03 PM

For a show labelled a sitcom, there's an underwhelming amount of comedy content.

by Anonymousreply 321March 19, 2021 11:34 PM

Why the fuck is Cheyenne-openly-queer-as-a-three-dollar-bill-Jackson playing a straight man in this katastrophe? Don't we now cast for "authenticity"? A straight man... who secretly... loves... Kat.................a frau of FRAUGANTUAN proportions. What the fuck kind of frau fantasy is this?

by Anonymousreply 322March 26, 2021 4:44 AM

There's something comforting about it. The sitcom format while super dated is sweetly familiar but the way they come out at the end like a play. Between Blossom, The Big Bang and now Call me Kat, she's made a pretty penny. She's estimated to be worth 25 million.

[quote]the way they come out at the end like a play.

That and the asides to the audience were taken from Miranda Hart’s show. I think they say this is based on her show just so they could steal those elements.

I wonder why they didn’t put Cheyenne in Leslie Jordan’s role as the Southern gay boy? Cheyenne is old enough that the Mama jokes would work. He’s completely wasted on this show because they didn’t follow through with Miranda’s idea of the dorky girl pursuing the sexy guy.

by Anonymousreply 326March 26, 2021 12:27 PM

I’ve never watched Miranda but R326 touches on a great point. As much as MB would like to be the huggable quirky, dorky girl, she ain’t. She’s impersonating what worked for someone else. It shows because it feels soooooo forced. It’s almost like a parody of a sitcom, or in this case shitcom. Especially the relationships w CJ & SK. No chemistry. None. Call me Katatonic.

by Anonymousreply 327March 26, 2021 12:33 PM

Finally made it to ep 13. What a journey. They just went for the absurd.

Swoozie Kurtz auditioning for Cats? In what universe?

At least they let our Cheyenne sing briefly.

And I will give credit to them, at the end they did swing the cameras around and show the tech people (which was kind of stolen from Bill Cosby’s last show).

by Anonymousreply 328March 27, 2021 7:02 AM

Oh, Christ I wish they wouldn’t. This show is going nowhere.

by Anonymousreply 332March 27, 2021 7:42 PM

Cheyenne needs to be given some juicy stuff to do.

by Anonymousreply 333April 4, 2021 5:42 PM

Cheyenne is the worst thing about the show. Get rid of him. Give Leslie Jordan more to do and also the other employee. Swoozie as the "Ginger Martini" as described above is perfect.

by Anonymousreply 334April 6, 2021 2:42 PM

The show is abysmal. I found the Kyla Pratt role almost offensively stereotypical, and the forced breaking of the 4th wall pulls you *immediately* out of a show that was already struggling to be convincing and natural and seamless.

The following 12 second clip will always be the pinnacle of Bialik's comedy career.:
