Did you ever see "Voyage Of The Damned" (1976)?

Faye really was excellent in it. Makes me see her with different eyes.

Tragic true story.

I saw it in the theater when it came out, but I remember very little of it.

by Anonymousreply 1November 22, 2020 9:45 PM

Very underrated film. It’s usually lumped together with those ALL STAR Airplane/Towering Inferno type movies. Even Katharine Ross was good. Lee Grant goes way over the top but she got an Oscar nomination so what do I know.

by Anonymousreply 2November 22, 2020 9:47 PM

Oh dear, I just read the catch line on the poster. They were wrong. I have *not* remembered it as long as I've lived.

by Anonymousreply 3November 22, 2020 9:48 PM

Amazingly inappropriate trailer

I thought it was very 70s "All-Star Cast" a la The Towering Inferno. Pretty mediocre. I think today it could be very effective as a mini-series on one of the streaming channels.

by Anonymousreply 6November 22, 2020 9:56 PM

Were there any JEWS in that cast? Today there would be a shitstorm for filling parts with actors whose ethnicity doesn't match the character's.

by Anonymousreply 7November 22, 2020 9:58 PM

Lee Grant is Jewish. Most of them were not.

by Anonymousreply 8November 22, 2020 10:13 PM

Another all star cast movie from the 1970s was "The Hindenburg".

Her agent must have pulled strings to have his client billed as "Anne Bancroft as the Countess".

by Anonymousreply 9November 22, 2020 10:20 PM

Was that the movie where Lee rended her clothing? If so, I remember that, otherwise...nada.

by Anonymousreply 10November 22, 2020 10:26 PM

Ship of Fools it wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 11November 22, 2020 10:27 PM

Lee’s hubby starts stabbing himself and jumps overboard. She flies into hysterics in her cabin and starts cutting her hair off. Faye (no stranger to haircuts) slaps her.

by Anonymousreply 12November 22, 2020 10:29 PM

And then Julie Harris cuts off her nipples.

by Anonymousreply 13November 22, 2020 10:30 PM

That's Reflections in a Golden Eye, R13. But you knew that.

by Anonymousreply 14November 22, 2020 10:32 PM

That I sorta remember now, r12.

by Anonymousreply 15November 22, 2020 10:33 PM

Voyage of the Damn! Damn! Damn!

by Anonymousreply 16November 22, 2020 10:38 PM

Faye was no stranger to slaps either.

R11 So were you in an alcoholic haze all through this movie?

by Anonymousreply 18November 22, 2020 10:42 PM

These kind of movie are sad.

Watching former-stars getting only 5 minutes of screen time in a studio in front of a back-projection screen.

Poor James, Wendy, Maria.

by Anonymousreply 19November 22, 2020 10:55 PM

Her character wore a monocle. I swear!

by Anonymousreply 20November 22, 2020 10:58 PM

Monocles were very Weimar.

by Anonymousreply 21November 22, 2020 11:00 PM

I love Faye and Lee in this movie. Wendy Hiller is good as well.

Faye is at the height of her gorgeousity.

I saw it in a theater when it came out, and I thought it was clumsily directed, heavy-handed and overlong.

I haven't seen it in decades, but the thing I remember most about it was that it had way too many close-up - like a 1970s TV movie but with a big budget.

There's a real film to be made of this story; this movie just isn't it.

I'd be curious to see how I'd react to it now.

But I'm not that curious.

by Anonymousreply 31November 23, 2020 12:29 AM

R30, great pic. Yes, Fabio was in The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1971) with Helmut Berger. Fabio Testi and Franco Nero are the HOTTEST Italians!

No, r35,....it 'twasn't.

by Anonymousreply 36November 23, 2020 1:32 AM

That poster is really deceptive. It makes it look like The Poseidon Adventure type disaster film. It's not.

Miss Dunaway must have been delighted with the billing though. Prominently on top with no one else on the same line even.

Funny how Katharine Ross won the Golden Globe but it was Lee Grant who got the Oscar nomination instead.

by Anonymousreply 37November 23, 2020 1:41 AM

So many movies I remember from that time because I worked at a movie theater and we got passes to other theaters in the chain.

In her memoir, Lee Grant frankly says that she was surprised to be nominated and "figured it was for shaving part of my head. It was the sympathy vote." She also says she acted like "an insecure diva" on the set, perhaps schooling co-star Miss Dunaway in how to throw a mean salad.

I agree that Wendy Hiller was wonderful.

I preferred the Richard Amsel poster, his work was always so stylish!

I saw it in the theatre, too. (Yes, I’m an eldergay!) An impressive cast, but some of the roles the stars had were really tiny. Beyond that, the only things O remember is that is was overlong and ingenue Lynne Frederick was really lovely.

I was in high school and went with a bunch of equally knuckle-headed friends just based on the title (which was something you did back then if you were bored out of your skulls on a random Friday night). We assumed it was going to be a horror movie of some sort.

We were wrong.

We walked out about half way through when it became obvious that Satan would not be involved.

R64, The scene of Brando preening because he thinks Forster is coming to rendezvous with him is classic.
