Her show is all about licorice on Monday evening BBC2 8pm.
She's been mixing it up this season. This week's show started with twice buttered toast with a sprinkle of sea salt!

I think she means flavour wise.
I'd say smoked kippers were more the bacon of the sea.

I just bought anchovy paste. I will use it in sauces. Perhaps I should post in the "I want to be underwhelmed" thread.

R5 for the win. Smoked kippers are so much better than anchovies.

Is the anchovy an actual fish or a preparation of small fish?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 21, 2020 2:02 PM |
No it is an actual fish, but there are many different sub species.

R12 r13 thanks! Is it eaten fresh?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 21, 2020 2:09 PM |
Not really. Bacon flavor is good on its own and if you taste it in the food. Anchovies add a unique flavor if you can’t quite taste them.

Other than he great rack, I love Nigella because she's not afraid of prunes and lima beans and anchovies and other ingredients that make viewers with baby tastes (ie, Americans) recoil.

I love anchovy, but to filet and debone them is hard on the fingers. I may give the paste a try.

Anchovies are great but only if you really pound them to bring out all the flavour.

How do you use anchovies?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 21, 2020 3:10 PM |
R23 You have to have sex with them to flavor them up? I’m sure when Elio’s done with the peach he’ll give it a try.

r15 Fresh anchovies are difficult to find. Popular in Mediterranean recipes.

Thanks r5 @bronzeagegay! Adding an anchovy certainly perks up stews and gravies, so indeed the MSG of the sea!
I also keep a bottle of thai fish sauce. Sprinkling a few drops into virtually any dish at the tail end of its cooking enhances its flavor.
Fresh anchovies must be like the wonderful fresh sardine. I will keep an eye out for it.
