So he left the gym after 30 minutes? That sounds really suspicious. It points to a possible hookup. The gas station he stopped at is located in the gay area of Dallas. All the clues point to a hookup gone bad.

R56 where the car was found is a very poor and high crime part of town. It is on the south east side of town, there are a lot of wooded areas and the city landfill is near it.

The gas station is only one mile from his home. He had a conf call scheduled for 7 a.m. Something happened during the one mile drive home.

Maybe he made a detour on his way home to buy drugs?
