Thousands are petitioning for Levar Burton to replace Alex Trebek

Yahoo TV Alex Trebek's 'Jeopardy!' replacement should be LeVar Burton, say thousands backing petition Taryn Ryder Taryn Ryder·Writer, Yahoo Entertainment Thu, November 12, 2020, 11:48 AM HST Alex Trebek can never be replaced, but Jeopardy! will go on in the wake of the beloved host’s death. While the show is “not announcing plans for a new host at this time,” that hasn’t stopped fans from weighing in. A few names that have been tossed around online are George Stephanopoulos, Rosie Perez and Joe Rogan, but there’s one potential contender picking up steam: LeVar Burton.

Burton, 63, is known for playing Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: the Next Generation and he hosted 21 seasons of the educational program Reading Rainbow. According to a Change.org petition signed by more than 15,000 people, Burton has “inspired and shaped the minds of several generations of trivia-loving nerds.”

“This petition is to show Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and producers Mike Richards and Harry Friedman just how much love the public has for Burton, and how much we'd all love to see him as the next host of Jeopardy!,” it reads.

Although Trebek was somewhat tightlipped, publicly at least, over who he viewed to be a worthy replacement, there’s one thing for certain: He would applaud any effort to try and fix Hollywood’s diversity problem.

There’s a common theme in the tributes pouring in for Trebek, who died Sunday at age 80 from pancreatic cancer. Many note how he inspired people of all backgrounds. It’s what helped him earn such a loyal, diverse group of fans around the world. Trebek was a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, with the L.A. chapter calling him “one of the kindest souls” who “believed deeply in racial justice.”

[quote] We send our love and prayers to Mr. Trebek’s family and friends. He was a strong supporter of #BlackLivesMatter who believed deeply in racial justice. He was one of the kindest souls. BLMLA feels blessed to have called him friend. May the good that he has done last forever. — #BlackLivesMatter-LA (@BLMLA) November 8, 2020

An early criticism of Jeopardy! was the lack of Black contestants on the program. It’s one Trebek took personally, admitting in a 1995 interview the screening test could be part of the problem. But he noted how the show made a conscious effort to recruit people of color and featured “on a regular basis categories about famous Black people.”

“We are trying our darnedest to make America in general more aware of the accomplishments of Black people in this country,” he told The Seattle Times 25 years ago. It’s certainly part of the show and Trebek’s legacy as diversity among contestants increased.

One of the vintage Trebek clips to go viral since his death is when Jeopardy! featured a rap category in 2017. Trebek, who was a fan of the genre, sang lyrics from Drake, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne and Designer.

[quote] Alex Trebek rapping on Jeopardy is still one of the all time great moments on the show. He will be missed - a true TV icon. #StillHoodFamous pic. — Josh Jordan (@NumbersMuncher) November 8, 2020

Trebek was equally as embraced by the Black community as evident from all of the condolences pouring in. The Nod host and producer Brittany Luse even noted before Trebek’s death how his name was on her church’s prayer list.

“Small, tight knit Black church on the west side, and his name was tucked right in among the sick and shut in,” she shared last week. “I can't think of many people with that kind of impact.”

I'll never forget when I spotted Alex Trebek's name on my home church's prayer list last winter. Small, tight knit Black church on the west side, and his name was tucked right in among the sick and shut in. I can't think of many people with that kind of impact ❤️ — Brittany Luse (@bmluse) November 6, 2020

Burton is among the stars who reacted to Trebek’s death, posting an emoji of a broken heart.

As for succeeding Trebek, it sounds like Burton’s up for the task — should the petition carry any weight with Sony.

“Even if nothing comes from it, I can’t tell how much how I appreciate all y’alls love and support!” he wrote on Thursday.

Petition · Make LeVar Burton the next host of Jeopardy! · — LeVar Burton (@levarburton) November 12, 2020

Where it goes from here remains to be seen.

by Anonymousreply 1November 12, 2020 11:01 PM

I actually love this idea.

Mostly because I really like Levar Burton. He was a great addition to Star Trek: The Next Generation as Jordi LeForge.

It's hard to believe that he first burst on to the scene in the Roots Mini-Series. That's like a million miles away from what he's known for now.

by Anonymousreply 2November 12, 2020 11:03 PM

I think this is a good idea. I know many millennial aged adults who have very good memories of Levar Burton from his time on Reading Rainbow.

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2020 11:03 PM

Can the make it into Black Jeopardy then?

by Anonymousreply 4November 12, 2020 11:03 PM

This is perfect all around.

[quote]A few names that have been tossed around online are George Stephanopoulos, Rosie Perez and Joe Rogan

Joe Rogan? WTF?? Does his fan base really overlap with Jeaopardy's?

by Anonymousreply 5November 12, 2020 11:04 PM

I'm not fighting it but there are plenty of other candidates. My vote is for Aisha Tyler.

by Anonymousreply 6November 12, 2020 11:07 PM

Why not just get Jeff Probst? He used to host Rock & Roll Jeopardy on VH1. He knows how to do the job.

by Anonymousreply 7November 12, 2020 11:12 PM

[quote] Why not just get Jeff Probst?

Because Jeff Probst is a narcissistic, egotistical fame whore.

He would make the show all about HIM, just like he does on Survivor.

Probst would be the worst Jeopardy host EVER!!!!

by Anonymousreply 8November 12, 2020 11:14 PM

Aisha Tyler slips too easily into smarm mixed with pretentiousness. Best in smaller doses, imo.

LOVE the Levar Burton idea.

What about Greg Kinnear? He controls his smarm pretty well.

by Anonymousreply 9November 12, 2020 11:21 PM

They can play the Reading Rainbow theme song during final Jeopardy

by Anonymousreply 10November 12, 2020 11:21 PM

when we had a replacement thread I think Levar and David Hyde Pierce were amongst the most mentioned.

by Anonymousreply 11November 12, 2020 11:23 PM

Does Jeff Probst have an actual fanbase? Is he relevant to anyone under 50? Levar Burton has Star Trek fans and a generation of millennial fans from Reading Rainbow.

by Anonymousreply 12November 12, 2020 11:23 PM

Jeopardy fans are nerds.

Nerds would like another nerd to host the show.

That's why Levar Burton is a great idea.

by Anonymousreply 13November 12, 2020 11:24 PM

Jim Parsons is another nerd who would be a great host.

by Anonymousreply 14November 12, 2020 11:24 PM

Sherri Shepard is also under consideration.

by Anonymousreply 15November 12, 2020 11:26 PM

Jim Parsons does not need a steady paycheck from a game show gig.

by Anonymousreply 16November 12, 2020 11:28 PM

Maybe he might just find satisfaction from the job, R16.

It's not always about money.

Alex Trebek and Pat Sajak both hosted their shows for over 30 years, and that's because it wasn't "work" to them.

by Anonymousreply 17November 12, 2020 11:29 PM

Perfect for Colin Jost.

by Anonymousreply 18November 12, 2020 11:29 PM

Levar is a perfect choice.

by Anonymousreply 19November 12, 2020 11:32 PM

[quote] An early criticism of Jeopardy! was the lack of Black contestants on the program. It’s one Trebek took personally, admitting in a 1995 interview the screening test could be part of the problem.

Uh. what?

[quote] An early criticism of Jeopardy! was the lack of Black contestants on the program. It’s one Trebek took personally, admitting in a 1995 interview the screening test could be part of the problem.

[quote] Uh, what?

It was probably the same criticism aimed at the SAT's and other standardized tests.

They're all alleged to have an inherent cultural bias, that doesn't take ethnicity and other factors into consideration.

by Anonymousreply 21November 12, 2020 11:44 PM

Well, maybe you can write Jim Parsons a fan letter and tell him all about it, R17.

by Anonymousreply 22November 12, 2020 11:44 PM

Yes, and some of the decision makers were probably racist and used dog whistles like "she seems too angry" and "he comes across a little scary," r21. I've heard people talk like that about black people who are just as normal as anyone else.

by Anonymousreply 23November 12, 2020 11:47 PM

Now that LeVar has been mentioned as a replacement, I can't think of anyone else better suited to replace Trebek.

by Anonymousreply 24November 13, 2020 12:45 AM

Some people want Rosie Perez to host Jeporady? Are those poeple on crack?

by Anonymousreply 25November 13, 2020 12:48 AM

I've met him. he was a self-important, inflated ego, arrogant douche. he ran our staff ragged. total asshole. just sayin'

by Anonymousreply 26November 13, 2020 12:58 AM

Sherri Shepard thinks the earth is flat.

by Anonymousreply 27November 13, 2020 12:59 AM

Just hire Rosie O'Donnell. As a fuck you to the Trumpsters.

by Anonymousreply 28November 13, 2020 1:01 AM

[quote] I've met him. he was a self-important, inflated ego, arrogant douche. he ran our staff ragged. total asshole. just sayin'

Sounds like it could be anyone in anywhere USA.

Many of us have probably been described this way at one time.

by Anonymousreply 29November 13, 2020 1:03 AM

R29, Ellen Degeneres lost her career over that.

by Anonymousreply 30November 13, 2020 1:05 AM

How about experienced clue crew guy Jimmy?

by Anonymousreply 32November 13, 2020 1:11 AM

Levar Burton would be great.

by Anonymousreply 33November 13, 2020 1:13 AM

[quote] I've met him. he was a self-important, inflated ego, arrogant douche. he ran our staff ragged. total asshole. just sayin'

I'm sure that sometimes even Alex Trebek could have been described that way.

by Anonymousreply 34November 13, 2020 1:14 AM

Butterfly in the sky...

I can go twice as high!

by Anonymousreply 35November 13, 2020 1:18 AM

Levar was so hot in Looking for Mr. Goodbar.

by Anonymousreply 36November 13, 2020 1:22 AM

I still vote for Jane Lynch.

by Anonymousreply 37November 13, 2020 1:24 AM

The problem with Burton is his history of condescension. There are a lot of print and video records of his being condescending to others, especially to other Black Americans.

I would like to see somebody like Ashley Judd, who is really smart and has been off screens for a while.

by Anonymousreply 38November 13, 2020 1:27 AM

Huh. I didn’t think anyone could do it, but now that you’ve mentioned it, he’s a great pick. I’m for it!

by Anonymousreply 39November 13, 2020 1:27 AM

Whoever it is, they're going to have to be able to pronounce the word GENRE, perfectly!

by Anonymousreply 40November 13, 2020 1:28 AM

I think LeVar is a bit overwhelmed judging from his tweets. I think it must be a little awkward for him since Trebek just passed away but it's nice to see people championing someone who is kind and likable.

by Anonymousreply 41November 13, 2020 1:29 AM

[quote] There are a lot of print and video records of his being condescending to others, especially to other Black Americans.

Again, Alex could be very condescending as well.

It'll take time, but I think that Levar could find a groove that people will get used to.

by Anonymousreply 42November 13, 2020 1:29 AM

Agreed R42. Burton could temper it, as Trebek managed to do going into the 1990's.

by Anonymousreply 43November 13, 2020 1:31 AM

Jeff Probst is busy with Survivor Season Number 102.

by Anonymousreply 44November 13, 2020 1:31 AM

Baratunde Thurston would be an excellent choice. Brilliant and personable, he was a popular guest expert on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" He also worked at The Onion and on "The Daily Show."

As for Black contestants, the "Jeopardy" written quiz was extremely difficult - nothing like the questions used during the show. After being shown the door, several of us rejects (Black and White) shared our Mensan credentials and a producer confided that few high IQ aspirants ever made it past the initial testing phase. The producer demurred when asked why - go figure. There may be a psychological component at play. Years later, I passed the "Millionaire" written test, but apparently didn't impress the young White woman producer during my brief interview and never got a call back.

There is no need for cultural correctness in either the SATs or in knowledge-based game shows.

by Anonymousreply 45November 13, 2020 2:20 AM

Levar is definitely comforting for anyone who grew up watching Reading Rainbow. I never watched him when he wore that banana clip over his eyes on Star Trek, so I only know him as the RR guy

by Anonymousreply 46November 13, 2020 2:23 AM

I’ve never seen a resolution reached as fast as this.

As my friend Tractor would say, “good work, men.”

by Anonymousreply 47November 13, 2020 2:33 AM

I really hope the producers realize this is also a sign people don't want Ken as host.

by Anonymousreply 48November 13, 2020 2:49 AM

Levar Burton was in a very good TV movie in 1979 called "Dummy". It's on YouTube. He plays a deaf man accused of murder and Paul Sorvino is his attorney. Based on a true story!

by Anonymousreply 49November 13, 2020 2:56 AM

I love it when Paul Sorvino talks dirty!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 50November 13, 2020 3:08 AM

Before "Reading Rainbow" and "Star Trek: TNG" there was "Roots." Mr. Burton's delivery of the line "My name is Kunte Kinte" made television history.

by Anonymousreply 51November 13, 2020 3:09 AM

Can someone who starred in Dummy host Jeopardy?

by Anonymousreply 52November 13, 2020 3:12 AM

How did this start? Seems like kind of a random, obscure choice to catch on so much.

by Anonymousreply 53November 13, 2020 3:14 AM

Not that obscure. On the DL thread for who should host Jeopardy, Burton's name came up a lot.

He has fans from many groups - Star Trek, Reading Rainbow, Roots, etc.

by Anonymousreply 54November 13, 2020 3:22 AM

Lemar would bring a wealth of experience to the job!

by Anonymousreply 55November 13, 2020 3:23 AM

Jon Hodgman would be more interesting.

by Anonymousreply 56November 13, 2020 5:13 AM

Hodgeman is good, too

by Anonymousreply 57November 13, 2020 5:18 AM

The Trebecksters aren’t having it

by Anonymousreply 58November 13, 2020 5:38 AM

by Anonymousreply 59November 13, 2020 5:47 AM

What about dear Glenn? Lord knows she has plenty of time.

Too old?

by Anonymousreply 60November 13, 2020 5:56 AM

Let Samuel L. Jackson read the motherfucking answers.

by Anonymousreply 61November 13, 2020 5:58 AM

[quote] The Trebecksters aren’t having it

Perhaps they would prefer if the producers propped up a stuffed Alex against the wall, and have him read the questions from there?

Idiots.

by Anonymousreply 62November 13, 2020 7:24 AM

This is becoming another Biden vs. Trump!

by Anonymousreply 63November 13, 2020 7:25 AM

Can't they just do a hologram of Trebek, and hire a soundalike?

by Anonymousreply 64November 13, 2020 7:37 AM

I just watch Jeopardy with Alex. It's like coming home. This is so sad.

They have to go with a AA person who is extremely erudite. Levar a good pick. It is impossible to replace Alex.

by Anonymousreply 65November 13, 2020 7:59 AM

I just watch Jeopardy with Alex. It's like coming home. This is so sad.

by Anonymousreply 66November 13, 2020 7:59 AM

I agree R65/R66. Alex is irreplaceable.

However, the fact that so many people are okay with Levar Burton, and rooting for him, says that people might actually be open to the idea of going on without Alex.

Levar Burton as Jeopardy host isn't really so far fetched, if you think about it.

He's articulate, he's well liked, and he's well known.

by Anonymousreply 67November 13, 2020 3:37 PM

I watch Jeopary after I get home from work. It's something I've done for over 20 years and I find it comforting. I'm usually relieving stress from work... Jacking off to pornhub... While listening to Jeopardy in the background. There isn't a bigger dick wilter than Levar Burton. Please don't make it Levar Burton. Why not hot weatherman Rob from ABC? Young, muscular and pretty Rob.

by Anonymousreply 68November 13, 2020 4:26 PM

I’m all for LeVar Burton being named Jeopardy host. He’s respected, has a pleasing voice, and unlike most actors, isn’t thirsty for attention and wouldn’t do cheap antics for cheap laughs.

by Anonymousreply 69November 13, 2020 4:52 PM

R7 Jeff Probst sucks.

by Anonymousreply 70November 13, 2020 4:54 PM

I am not being a smart ass. I would truly like to know. He is not my first pick, but I can see where people feel like he is the right fit. I would hate to see them shove him through on that assumption and him being a big prick.

by Anonymousreply 83November 24, 2020 2:04 AM

I'm pissed that Ken Jennings is going to be a temporary host.

He SUCKS.

Jeopardy should really listen to the fans. Let Levar Burton have a shot at it.

However, it sounds like the show is going to try out a number of different hosts.

by Anonymousreply 88November 24, 2020 2:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 89November 24, 2020 11:36 PM

"race angle?" good lord

by Anonymousreply 90November 25, 2020 11:08 AM

The problem is finding someone with the right combination of qualities. Levar Burton combines relatability from Roots with the nerdiness of Star Trek plus a history of broad-based appeal from Reading Rainbow. It’s a good choice.

by Anonymousreply 91November 25, 2020 11:27 AM

R88 translated: "This is a white man's job! I ain't watching no n***** on Jeopardy! Reverse racism! PC run amok!"

by Anonymousreply 92November 25, 2020 11:31 AM

There is not a "fine line" between arrogance and confidence, in fact you can drive a truck through it. Confidence is quiet. He is an actor, and like Ellen can probably successfully play the part, but I think his arrogance and self-importance will come through and he will make contestants feel like shit and the audience will end up hating him.

by Anonymousreply 93November 25, 2020 1:53 PM

LeVar is stepping up his campaign to be the host of Jeopardy.

Although many think Ken Jennings has the hosting gig in the bag, I wonder if this campaign will make the producers consider having LeVar on as a guest host.

by Anonymousreply 94April 10, 2021 12:55 AM

LeVar Burton is a superb choice.

by Anonymousreply 95April 10, 2021 1:11 AM

How can he even see without his visor?

by Anonymousreply 96April 10, 2021 1:22 AM

I’d rather have the Executive Producer that hosted or Ken Jennings host. Not EVERYTHING needs to be woke.

If LeVar wants to be host, then he better at least guest host first so we can see if he sucks or not.

by Anonymousreply 97April 10, 2021 1:25 AM
