Datalounge memes you don't "get"

I'm not talking about references you don't understand, I'm talking about common threads or themes that you don't understand the appeal and draw of. For example, I never get sick of Golden Girls threads and, as someone who grew up as a theatre geek in the 80s and 90s with Sondheim shows repeating endlessly on Bravo (remember when it was an arts channel?), I get kind of tickled by all the Follies threads.

But, on the flip side....

I do not understand the board's obsession with Armie Hammer and his ex-wife.

I do not understand the appeal of "Let's be..." threads.

by Anonymousreply 100November 3, 2020 12:14 AM

I think most of the "Let's be" threads are fun

I agree with you about Armie Hammer's wife. I mean, I get why people here care about HIM because he's hot....who cares about his non-famous frau wife?

by Anonymousreply 1October 28, 2020 7:43 PM

I love the "Let's Be" threads but I don't get the pasta-draining-thing. Can't find any explanation of its origin so makes no sense to me as a stand alone joke.

by Anonymousreply 2October 28, 2020 7:44 PM

Don't get the Chrissy Metz obsession

Or Lena Dunham

by Anonymousreply 3October 28, 2020 7:46 PM

Who’s Lena Durham? Is she some knock off wannabe of Lens Durham?

by Anonymousreply 4October 28, 2020 7:48 PM
I do not understand the board's obsession with Armie Hammer and his ex-wife.

He was in a VERY popular gay movie in which he played gay. They'll be obsessed with him for as long as he's alive. Get it?

by Anonymousreply 5October 28, 2020 7:48 PM
I get why people here care about HIM because he's hot....who cares about his non-famous frau wife?

She was married to HIM.

by Anonymousreply 6October 28, 2020 7:49 PM
I do not understand the appeal of "Let's be..." threads.

They can be very funny and clever...especcially if "70s" related.

by Anonymousreply 7October 28, 2020 7:50 PM

The Royal Family threads are neither clever or interesting.

by Anonymousreply 8October 28, 2020 7:53 PM

Oops, ... 'neither clever NOR interesting'

I correct myself before the grammar troll hits me.

by Anonymousreply 9October 28, 2020 7:54 PM

There a fewer these days, R8. There's a lull.

by Anonymousreply 10October 28, 2020 7:54 PM

The "Let's Be" threads can be very funny and clever. We had a "Let's Be Forensic Files" thread that was a scream, if you're a devoted fan of the show.

by Anonymousreply 11October 28, 2020 7:54 PM

THIS is the origin of the pasta-draining meme. It took me all of two seconds to find it using a Google search.

by Anonymousreply 12October 28, 2020 7:56 PM

I don't find the pasta one interesting or funny.

I like the telephone dialler one.

by Anonymousreply 13October 28, 2020 7:58 PM

The R8, the Meghan obsession (and the undeniable racist undertones in SOME of the posts) are unsettling, but I guess they're not unique to Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 14October 28, 2020 7:59 PM

R12 Thank you. The pasta thing reads idiotic. Now I know I'm not missing some big hilarious in-joke.

R13 Dialing the phone with a pencil kills me!

"Let's Be 'Fatal Attraction'" is an all-time favorite.

by Anonymousreply 17October 28, 2020 8:13 PM
"Let's Be 'Fatal Attraction'" is an all-time favorite.

I was the op of that.

That's the first time I've ever read someone fangurl one of my threads...
Quincy, the Fat Dog

OMG and I was the one who brought the fat dog into it.

by Anonymousreply 18October 28, 2020 8:18 PM

"Let's be" isn't a meme

by Anonymousreply 19October 28, 2020 8:19 PM

Well, it's something.

by Anonymousreply 20October 28, 2020 8:23 PM

Did the pasta OP mix up draining and rinsing? I’ve always wondered.

by Anonymousreply 21October 28, 2020 8:23 PM

Another huge fans of the "Let's Be..." threads. Those tend to have the wittiest posts on DL.

by Anonymousreply 22October 28, 2020 8:26 PM
..I never get sick of Golden Girls threads......

Uh, there's your problem.

by Anonymousreply 23October 28, 2020 8:27 PM

I thought the Let's be a Non Profit was a scream and shared it with several of my friends that work at various NYC gay non-profs. I was able to include a link because I easily did a search on google for it and came up with it in two seconds also.

What's really super pathetic is the OP of this post could have easily done the same. There have already been so many posts about this very same subject. From pasta draining to the Let's Be posts. And they are NOT memes either. But OP is yet another lazy butthole that couldn't be bothered to do a search. Let me just take up digital time and space with another fucking tired pasta post. Nobody thinks you're funny either OP so who cares what you think of pasta draining or Let's Be posts.

You should have never came here. You're not welcome. I suggest you don't come back either. You're in way over your head on this one. You should have kept your fat PIE HOLE SHUT and did a search first!!

Yes, the Forensic Files thread was funny. IMO, so was the Judge Judy thread. I'll have to check out Fatal Attraction.

by Anonymousreply 31October 28, 2020 9:32 PM

Oh and fuck you too R26! I can see right thru the runny shit stain that is your face! Anyone coming on here and can say die in a grease fire needs no one’s help sweetie. So just drop that box of twinkies and back away from the refrigerator slowly because you’ve been busted.

by Anonymousreply 32October 28, 2020 10:00 PM
Who’s Lena Durham? Is she some knock off wannabe of Lens Durham?

I think she’s related to Jackie on Assistance.

by Anonymousreply 33October 28, 2020 10:06 PM

There was a Let's Be A Gay Bar a few years back that was pretty fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 34October 28, 2020 10:09 PM

R11--Let's Be Forensic Files was so, so funny. Also, I can't remember if it was a Let's Be but one thread that went on & on about 70s crafts kits and projects, had so many hilarious posts. It's not just WHAT people remember, it's HOW they remember and explain it now. The Christmas Fruitcake Baker thread of 2018 was one of my all time favorites, too, because the OP/Fruitcake Baker was such a vicious bitch about everyone's special needs and requests. Pretty much everyone got told to fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 35October 28, 2020 10:09 PM

R5 yes, Armie was casted in a very gay movie.

by Anonymousreply 52October 28, 2020 11:22 PM

R49 I was always perplexed by the draining pasta thread. Can anyone use pasta without draining it ? I do remember Julia Child's dismissal of rinsing pasta - she said that the flavour was in the starch so why would anyone want to rinse it away. I also liked her endorsement of canned tuna in vegetable broth instead of water.

by Anonymousreply 53October 28, 2020 11:33 PM

"earrings caftans"

"vicious slapping"

Not interesting. Not funny.

Not every tradition deserves to live forever.

by Anonymousreply 54October 29, 2020 12:36 AM

I don't get anyone who doesn't get the sheer joy of the Let's Be threads. I also enjoyed the Let's Be Carrie thread as well. Agree they are the funniest and remind me of DL of old. And by old, I mean a decade ago.

by Anonymousreply 55October 29, 2020 12:50 AM

I don’t get the trend of people constantly posting about things they don’t get.

by Anonymousreply 56October 29, 2020 12:51 AM

Omg, I googled the let's be St. Elmo Fire thread. And bumped it. I couldn't believe it was still open after 10 years. Yes, go ahead and yell at me.
I was always perplexed by the draining pasta thread. Can anyone use pasta without draining it ? I do remember Julia Child's dismissal of rinsing pasta - she said that the flavour was in the starch so why would anyone want to rinse it away.

Not sure, but IMO, the anti-"draining" pasta is really about not rinsing pasta (in a colander).

by Anonymousreply 59October 29, 2020 4:01 AM

So, I just got to thinking. Does anyone remember coming home on Friday nights and watching Sandy Kane on MNN?

by Anonymousreply 60October 29, 2020 4:51 AM

Just a reference, but what is the "Gary talked her out of it" meme about Lucille Ball about?

by Anonymousreply 61October 29, 2020 4:59 AM

The most perplexing on Datalounge is that Kate Jackson is popular enough to be brought up every single goddamn Friday every goddamn week of the year.

by Anonymousreply 62October 29, 2020 5:08 AM

r51, Somebody claimed that a wise Gary Morton talked his wife Lucille Ball out of playing the part of Laurence Harvey's mother, the evil Mrs. Iselin, in the John Frankenheimer original film adaptation of "The Manchurian Candidate" (it is a matter of record that Frank Sinatra originally suggested her for the role instead of Angela Lansbury). Then someone hilariously suggested a wise Gary Morton also talked Lucy out of playing other classic but incredibly unlikely roles in her twilight years --the one that really got people going was as Beth Jarrett in "Ordinary People" (the role that went to Mary Tyler Moore), but my favorite was a wise Gary Morton convincing Lucy not to take the part of the prostitute, Bree, that Jane Fonda played in "Klute."

by Anonymousreply 63October 29, 2020 5:09 AM

Angie Dickinson's part in "Dressed To Kill" was one that Gary also talked her out of. Lucy almost did it, she even shaved her pussy for the shower scene.

by Anonymousreply 64October 29, 2020 5:17 AM

She practiced doing her big scene reading the doctor's letter that explained her one-night stand of the night before had herpes--and then making the "spider" expression.

The "Let's Be..." threads are not exactly my thing but I appreciate their place in Datalounge history. All the way back to the "Sumerian Farmwives" :) Years ago there were dozens of "Let's Be..." threads at any given time.

by Anonymousreply 66October 29, 2020 6:36 AM

I never understood why Mrs. Patsy Ramsey Formally of Boulder Colorado didn't just adopt the Darfur Orphan and go live with the lovely Ruth Madoff on her $1.9 million in Connecticut and help out poor Jackie on Assistance and her cousin Little Edie along with their 29 cats named Bootsy-Gumdrop

by Anonymousreply 67October 29, 2020 9:49 AM

R63 Many thanks, friend!

by Anonymousreply 71October 29, 2020 2:55 PM

I don't get the obsession with Timothée Chalamet. He has some talent. I thought from the spelling of his name that he was French...but he's American-born and descended from eastern European Jews. Why the French spelling of the name?

I don't get the obsession with guys with shaved pubic hair...are you interested in pre-pubescent males?

I do drain spaghetti and linguini. It's a pain in the ass to get it out of the boiling pot of water otherwise. I do retain some of the "pasta water" beforehand, but the obsession with "pasta water" is nonsensical. As is the obsession with "EVOO."

by Anonymousreply 72October 29, 2020 3:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 74October 29, 2020 3:25 PM

r72
Why the French spelling of the name?

Seriously, Charlois? Because it's French. Marc Chalamet was raised in Lille, France.
Timothee’s French roots come from his dad’s side of the family. Marc Chalamet was born in France, and he worked as an editor for UNICEF. Timothee’s fluent French can be attributed to the summers he spent with his father in the French town of Le Chambon-Sur-Lignon.

They really don't, though. No one on DL has any chill anymore, and every gimmick thread is 300 posts of try-hards, 100 posts of the same five in-jokes over and over, and 8 witty posts, many of which don't even get noticed in the middle of two dozen people Oh Dearing things that are actually correct but they're too stupid to realize it.

by Anonymousreply 77October 29, 2020 3:36 PM
I was always perplexed by the draining pasta thread. Can anyone use pasta without draining it ?

That's what I liked about it, the entire premise was off and people got exasperated very quickly by it.

The original congee thread was the same way, someone immediately lost their whole, entire mind because he thought the OP didn't know the truth definition of congee. The threats and recriminations were so bad the thread was deleted.

Organic arguments over stupid things are hilarious; the trolls we have who try too hard to start a fight over nothing are not.

by Anonymousreply 78October 29, 2020 3:39 PM

Not in years. Years and years.

Why "drinking again," anyway? If you didn't know Timmy's daddy is French, it's only because you [italic]really[/italic] haven't been paying attention. I expect more of you than that.

And his mother is not French.

by Anonymousreply 86October 29, 2020 7:30 PM
I don't get the obsession with Timothée Chalamet...I thought from the spelling of his name that he was French...but he's American-born and descended from eastern European Jews. Why the French spelling of the name?

His father is actually French (and has a Christian background). Lil' Timmy Tim spent summers in France growing up.

And he's associated with an iconic movie, as is his (former?) buddy, Armie.

by Anonymousreply 98November 2, 2020 10:03 PM

A little Helen Lawson can be quite amusing, but only an occasional dab now and then. She got quite played out on DL over the years. The original "What's your favorite Helen Lawson musical?" thread has never been surpassed, IMHO.

I'm surprised Patty Duke as Neely O'Hara never became as big on DL as Susan Hayward's Helen. She's certainly as absurdly, grotesquely funny as Helen.
