Gloria Estefan- did you like her?
And what was your favorite song by her?
Growing up in the 90s, my mom would play her Greatest Hits album all the time. She also would blast her "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" album. My gay ass used to love some of her songs lol.
I like many of her songs, but I highly enjoy "Words Get In The Way".
I also love her cover of "Love on a two way street"

I loathe most of her English pop stuff but I like the stuff she made after her stardom faded. The 2003-ish "Wrapped" album is half genius. Unfortunately, her bad taste fills the other half of what's an intelligent, adult album with more saccharine AC balladry and generic lyrics that mean nothing. And her 2014-ish Miss Little Havana album is fucking wild. It must have been on a shifty label because that should have been a hit; it was right on the mark when it came out and the title track is like retro freestyle. But other than that and her Spanish albums like Mi Tierra and Abruendo Puertas, no. Too generic, wedding singer makes it big stuff.

No! Hated her voice. She wasn’t much of a singer and her songs could be grating.

Gloria performed for the Pope after he made some kind of anti-gay remark & I never liked her after that (I had her '95 cover cd as well as her '85 & '87 cds).
GE also appeared on the 700 Club & is a republican like her hubby.
On top of all of that I can believe her daughter's recent comment that Gloria would've blamed her for her Granny's death if she came out to her.

She was part of that godawful adult contemporary wave that stunk up the airwaves throughout the late 80s and early 90s. Lite FM secretary music.

This bitch sabotaged Connie Francis' biopic. Thanks to her we will now probably never have a movie about one of the greatest singers of the 20th century.

I never liked her - and apparently neither did the Grim Reaper - but try as he may he could not be like the rhythm - he could not get her. Bitch lived through the bus crash and the boat crash. The bitch ain't cuban - she's a goddamn cockroach that can't be killed!

Actually, nobody likes her because she's a personality void. Didn't she have a Broadway musical that failed miserably?

I did a quick search on YT for it but the only thing I could find interesting there was
Scott Baio & Naomi Judd talking about her early 1970s Password game show appearance.

Her ballads are so whiny and mawkish.
Her dance songs are great and have aged well but the syrupy ballads haven't.
I've always loathed her "comeback" song "Coming Out of the Dark" when she and Emilio pimped the hell out of her comeback after the bus accident and came up with that sludge of a song.

r22 Thank you for reminding us just how terrible "Coming Out of the Dark" is. You know a Billboard Hot 100 #1 song truly sucks if it hasn't played on a single radio station since 1991.

Many big hits of yesteryear aren’t played often.
But Entertainment Tonight spoke about that song tonight. Expect to hear it some next year when it turns 30.

Coming out soon with her new memoir entitled, Cuban Cunt Makes Good.
And I really like her early song Bad Boy.

OH, God, the 30th anniversary of Coming Out of the Dark. We'll hear endless stories about Gloria's bravery surviving the accident.
I loved that Rolling Stone went against the mawkishness during that period and posted a pretty eye-opening article detailing how the Estefans treated the members of Miami Sound Machine.
Emilio seems like a real asshole, up there with Tommy Mottola and Clive Davis.

She came along at the right time. There was a dearth of Latin performers in the US market and she happened to be around and filled a niche. If she were a young singer today the field would be more crowded. Back then she had very little competition.
Those ballads of hers SUCKED.

R28 She was much better at singing jive, energetic songs as opposed to ballads.

Definitely. Conga is overplayed but I do like Bad Boy, Rhythm's Gonna Get You, Surrender, Let it Loose, Oye Mi Canto, Oye. In fact, the whole Gloria! album is pretty strong because it's all dance.

I remember Paula Abdul was on some video show hosting and she was introducing a Gloria Estefan video and said that some people have compared her voice to Karen Carpenter's (!). Are you fucking kidding me?
What an insult to Karen.

Karen Carpenter was MILES above Gloria Estefan in terms of talent and vocal ability.

lol I was just about to say that Coming Out of the Dark was my favorite song by her. I know its 90s lite FM dreck, that song reminds me of my mother and memories with her in the 90s when it was on the radio.

OP your mom sounds like my mom ❤
Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine played our local county fair bank in the mid 80s right before they hit it big. My family went & that's how my mom became a fan. So did this little gayling! I remember the crowd went nuts, it was a great show. Kinda surprising though, since this was in Iowa and the county fair usually had a tried & true formula: Country act on Friday night, aging rock band on Saturday night.

Guys,
For me, I will always remember her visiting the tent cities in Miami* where all the people whose houses had been completely demolished by Hurricane Andrew were forced to live. I know it's sentimental, but watching her sing her song, "There's Always Tomorrow" to them made me cry then. (And now a bit, too.)
*And where my parents and I were volunteering at a supply distribution center during the weekends

Her remake of "Turn The Beat Around" is epic. For me, the Love-To-Infinity remix of "Everlasting Love" is one of the defining songs of the 90s. I would twirl myself into delirium whenever it played at Studio One.
