You Can't Hurry Love - though personally, I keep trying to rush it.
At 2:05 Diana's earing falls off and she catches it like a pro.

I'm partial to "Reflections." I like the interesting blipping, radar-like sounds that are interspersed throughout the song, and I love the dark, minor key tone.

I like another moody one -- You Keep Me Hangin' On. Perfect for the edgy, neurotic quality of Diana Ross's voice.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 24, 2020 11:20 PM |
R6 "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" wasn't a Supremes song. It was the first solo hit for Diana after she struck out on her own.

r8 I can not believe they put 20 something girls in those grandma clothes. I also can't believe that outfit was every cool and hip looking. Who was getting a hard on from those ghastly clothes?
They had a lot of fun or sexy gown, being pop stars and all, what they wore in that clip looks like something a 50+ year old woman would wear. The 60s were so odd when it came to conservative youth style.
Here are some conservative yet sexy, youthful, and fun gowns on the ladies.

R39 Truth. By the time this was recorded, Diana had already made plans to leave the group. There was a lot of bitterness and acrimony among the girls, so Diana recorded the lead vocals, and studio singers, not Mary and Cindy, provided the backup.

Love Child
"Up the Ladder to the Roof," the 1970 hit single recorded by The Supremes for Motown. It was the first Supremes single to feature new lead singer Jean Terrell in place of Diana Ross, who officially left the group for a solo career two weeks before the recording of this song in January 1970.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 25, 2020 12:46 AM |
Not at all, R52. It simply showcases Ross' considerable versatility which was a significant part of her immense success. She really shined with the standard popular material. It's how they captured the attention of the parents and grandparents of the kids who bought their hits. Look what they do with an Irving Berlin 1925 song.

I can't think of a single Supremes song I DON'T like.
Like R43, my favorite is[italic]The Happening.[/italic] For years it was the ringtone on my cellphone. Funny thing: I didn't like The Supremes at all when they first appeared on the scene in the mid-'60s, thinking they were "too bubblegum." It took about five years for me to appreciate them, and now I think they are probably the greatest girl group of all time.

With 12 songs that hit number 1, it's hard to choose. "Where Did Our Love Go" was the song that launched their careers, "Love Child" was their biggest seller and "Baby Love" is probably tied with "You Can't Hurry Love" as their most requested song. But two songs stand out for me: "Stop! In The Name Of Love", because it has the choreography that we all remember, and "I Hear A Symphony" , because it's simply beautiful.
Trivia question: Two hits from the early Sixties mention Flo and Mary in their lyrics. One Is the Supremes "Back In My Arms Again". What is the other one?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | October 25, 2020 1:52 AM |
I remember when the New Supremes came to London. They were on Top Of The Pops and the next day I saw them having lunch in The Hard Rock Cafe - which was a very hip place then, believe it or not. I was so pleased to see them. I was about 9.

I grew up in the Mexican-American community of Southern California, and oldies are a huge part of it. But in a lot of cases, the oldies that we listened to weren't the big hits that everybody else knows.
Like this one..."I'm Giving You Your Freedom". In our community, it's a total classic. I was surprised when I got out into the wider world and found out that not a lot of white people, or even a lot of black people, knew it. For us, it was one of their best known and best loved songs.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | October 25, 2020 5:00 AM |
It was the B-side of one of their earliest singles, "Run, Run, Run," r88. Perhaps it was the side they played where you lived. That happened sometimes. I know it from the Where Did Our Love Go album. I don't think I heard either song as a single.

R88 Well, exactly! (Boyle Heights and Highland Park, here). When the Supremes first broke I thought they were a girl group from East LA. The album Where Did Our Love Go was the first album I ever bought. (At the Thrifty's at Five Points in Lincoln Heights). "I'm Giving You Your Freedom" totally had that Oldies vibe.

My World is Empty Without You is a masterpiece recording. HDH and Diana Ross at top of their game. And I like how faint but haunting the background vocals are. The live version, while well performed, is too show biz with the Supremes smiling through the whole song, the Vegas/Copa big band style arrangement, and the background vocals turned up. Turns a haunting pop record about heartbreak into a razzle dazzle bit of entertainment.

"Reflections" and the oft-forgotten (?) "Love is Like an Itching in My Heart".
It was one of the few Holland-Dozier-Holland compositions for the Supremes that didn't hit #1 on Billboard. (although it cracked the Top 10 for a week). I love this song beyond measure! No other Supremes song will get me out of my chair, dancing around, faster. It just fills me with joy and makes me smile. I think it's the xylophone. (which needs to make a comeback)

by Anonymous | reply 124 | December 18, 2020 1:15 PM |
I agree R124, to an extent. In the studio the last line up of the Supremes sounded great, even if the songs themselves weren't top drawer. But live they were often a mess. The cheesy Vegas big band arrangements, the rushed medleys, and Mary, Scherrie and Susaye all trying to outsing each other. Also even when they weren't trying to outsing one another, they were also trying way too hard to show they were "singers"--there's so much "singing" going on in their shows and it's relentless. Check out this live concert from 1976. No video, and it's a dupe of a bootleg recording so sound quality may not be the best, but still, there's just too much going on, and yet not enough. In short, they're all trying too hard for various reasons, and they forgot that less is more.

Thank you R77 for reminding me about “Love Child”, and R105 “My World...” I always thought Baby Love was so cute with that stamping- feet-sounding intro Love Child was in the vein of those social ills narrative songs they made in that era like Elvis’ “In The Ghetto”, very evocative I borrowed the records from an older brother and would listen endlessly though it was from “before my time” I saw Diana, ahem, that’s Miss Ross to me, thrice: First, live in concert solo, we all wore leopard print outfits, the boys in the Gaultier that was au courant; we were way up in the high seats so she was tiny Second time, in the airport in the 90s, she had Vuitton trunks & suitcases strewn along the carousel - I do not lie - and I had the gall to briefly but warmly wish her a happy birthday as our mutual birthday date was the next day, she was gorgeous and gracious I also walked by her once on the UES, she was outside the Birch Wathen Lenox school, she drew my attention due to the mane of hair & because she was talking into a small recorder (this was pre cell phone) & I seem to remember, leaving diva instructions for some underling xo

I can't decide what is the most ridiculous--the scarf dance, the finger wagging, or the spoken word intro.
