Republicans are not funny.

Post one example of successful conservative humor.

Our Emmys would disagree.

Tax cuts for the wealthy. They laughed and licked their chops over that one. Of course, no one else thought it was funny.

1984 Reagan v. Mondale debates - Reagan was asked if he had any doubts about his ability to function in a high stress situation like the Cuban Missile Crisis due to his relatively advanced age.

Reagan: None at all. And I want you to know, Mr. Truitt, also I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.

Even I laughed.

by Anonymousreply 3October 24, 2020 6:36 PM

R1 Oh Kelsey honey - even before I found out you were a Republican I thought you were unfunny.

by Anonymousreply 4October 24, 2020 6:36 PM

R1 The only humor to be found here is that the best thing you can think of is FRASIER (1993-2004), written by other smug liberal elites behind Modern Family and having nothing to do with any kind of conservative point of view....

by Anonymousreply 5October 24, 2020 6:39 PM

Their idea of “humor” is mean-spirited jokes and insults usually about a person’s race, intellect or looks. Examples—Michelle Obama looks like an ape! She is really a man and Barry is gay!

by Anonymousreply 6October 24, 2020 6:40 PM

Wit requires a measure of empathy. In order to be funny one must be able to see where others are either soft and/or existing in common space. From there, the next step is to step out of a safe zone--risking vulnerability--and offering a chance for community.

Most of the conservatives I know are obsessed with protecting their softness and lashing out to cover their weakness. Few of them will ever not be on guard.

Political cartoons are even worse as they take training (as well as innate skill) and that takes time...which also leaves the "student" vulnerable. Subsequently, cartoons like Dilbert, for example, only exist in their simplest form.

Ditto: Scott Baio/Kirstie Alley/Stacey Dash...

by Anonymousreply 7October 24, 2020 6:42 PM

Agree. You rarely see real wit from the right.

by Anonymousreply 8October 24, 2020 6:43 PM

They're hilarious when they drop dead.

by Anonymousreply 9October 24, 2020 6:45 PM

Before Rush Limbaugh became the official voice of the Republican Party I knew people who said they didn’t agree with what he said but liked his show because he was so funny. Back then there was also an urban legend that he saw himself as an actor playing a character and he didn’t believe a word of it, which interestingly Alex Jones has used in his own defense in court.

Sam Seder has said Gavin McInnes, creator of the Proud Boys, is a failed standup.

by Anonymousreply 10October 24, 2020 6:50 PM

PJ O’Rourke is intermittently mildly amusing. Unlike most conservatives, he is capable of self-deprecation, and he has not drunk the Trump Kool-Aid.

But these days all he does is shriek about “socialism,” just like the rest of them.

by Anonymousreply 11October 24, 2020 6:50 PM

Dennis Miller was funny until he took the hard turn to the right.

by Anonymousreply 12October 24, 2020 6:51 PM

Don Jr is the worst. I love how he ends up getting owned in just every comment to his smug, snarky tweets.

by Anonymousreply 13October 24, 2020 6:55 PM

I actually thought Trump was funny in his primary debates, Little Marco, Low Energy Jeb. I was still registered as a Republican then and ended up casting a meaningless vote for Rubio as he was the last man standing against Trump.

by Anonymousreply 19October 24, 2020 8:37 PM

R19 Clearly you are a Republican. You did not mature in the areas of your brain that allow you to process anything beyond the basest levels of humor.. taunting..grade school bullying... fart jokes... etc.

I think Republicans are hilarious. Everytime I see Chachi or Antonio Sabato Jr. having a fit about how they cant get roles I laugh.

Oh and go fuck yourself Mike Huckabee. You and your whole inbred family.

by Anonymousreply 25October 24, 2020 9:06 PM

I agree that most modern American humor has a sense of self-deprecation and insight that many Republicans just lack. A lot of Republican jokes are put-downs, usually about Dems, women, gays, and racial jokes.

When Dems laugh at Republicans it's because they say really stupid shit or their arguments are either twisted or intellectually dishonest.

They've studies Republican brains and they have much higher activity around fear. They are also much more squeamish toward bodily movements and have a more ordered, procedural way of thinking (whereas liberals have the ability to reorganize their thoughts in more flexible ways to get 'a-ha' moments).

Conservatives enjoy more literal art, familiar music, and unambiguous texts. They are more apt to show compassion to smaller circles (e.g. family and friends) than others they do not know.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen conservatives be offended by jokes or say - that's not funny. They're such literal people. And studies show they have a limited worldview and a limited amount of compassion, despite what they may say about being religious and honorable.

by Anonymousreply 26October 24, 2020 9:15 PM

R24 I tried looking at this Huckabee tweet neutrally and it's just not at all clever- The "they vote just like me!" shows he has no control over the absurdist sentiment he's trying to express which was not delivered with any sort of efficiency.

Ted Cruz' Zodiac Killer puzzle tweet on Halloween is literally the only time I can say I've seen a conservative be funny on twitter. Once. A single time. And I'm sure a staffer that secretly hates him floated him the idea.

I was going to use r3’s example also. Mondale himself got a hearty laugh out of, as did most people.

Politics weren’t nearly as vitriolic as today.

Hell, back in the 90s we had reasonable political discourse.

“Who you voting for?”

“I’m going with Bush. I think he’s did great the last 4 years and can continue.”

“Yeah. Well that’s cool. I’m going with Clinton. I think he can really create jobs and boost the economy.”

“Oh, that’s cool. Did you see the game last night...?”

Nowadays it’s:

“Who you voting for?”

“I’m going with Biden.”

HULK SMASH!!!!

I've met Mike Nelson (and Bridget) in person on multiple occasions and he was always warm, friendly, and sarcastically witty. You do realize he was one of the show's writers during all but the first of those oh-so-wonderful Joel Hodgson years? Once KTMA went bankrupt and the show moved to Comedy Central the material was scripted by an ensemble of writers, not done by Hodgson alone as off-the-cuff improv.

by Anonymousreply 54October 25, 2020 5:06 AM

This show you're touting as proof of conservative humor is about as funny as a college student lead midnight showing of Rocky Horror. In fact it's the same premise but with less clever commentary. Says a lot.

Correct. It's biological. Their larger, less regulated amygdalas are a primitive defect.

by Anonymousreply 57October 25, 2020 6:49 AM

by Anonymousreply 58October 25, 2020 6:52 AM

Republicans are not funny because they are a cult.

Their attempts at "humor" are invariably juvenile, crude and based on mocking someone or something.

The perfect example is Trump's mockery of the disabled reporter. Somehow they view that as funny.

by Anonymousreply 59October 25, 2020 7:03 AM

The Lincoln Project guys are really funny, some of them are - but not all.

Rick Wilson and Steve Schmidt are hilarious.

Abraham Lincoln, our funniest POTUS, was a Republican.

by Anonymousreply 60October 25, 2020 7:08 AM

R57 Anxiety and fear are normal, healthy responses to *well-founded perceptions of danger.

For instance, having a proven white supremacist malignant narcissist who has told over 20,000 documented lies, appoints Neo-Nazis and Neo-Nazi sympathizers to his cabinet, has deliberately killed over 200,000 people through denialism and inaction, kidnaps and abducts children, and is attempting to incite a second civil war obtaining the highest political office in the land is a perfectly good reason any normal person would experience fear and anxiety. It means your brain is working as it should.

Dysfunction of the amygdala in either extreme in a person however can mean they are incapable of perceiving real credible danger like the one we're in now and engage in dangerous risk taking behavior or that they overreact when they are not actually in danger (they're coming to take our guns, BLM and Antifa is coming to steal your house, etc...)

So no, the science matches pretty much exactly what we've already known for decades about conservatives.
Rick Wilson and Steve Schmidt are hilarious.

R62, we have all seen Steve Schmidt and Rick Wilson all over cable news for the past few years. We know they're both really funny. I'm not going to go searching for examples.

I don't know what the fuck you mean about President Lincoln. He is/was our funniest ever president. He didn't have writers giving him jokes, he thought them up himself because of his own great sense of humor.

by Anonymousreply 63October 25, 2020 7:19 AM

Rick Wilson is a cunt in the best possible way.

by Anonymousreply 64October 25, 2020 7:26 AM
we have all seen Steve Schmidt and Rick Wilson all over cable news for the past few years. We know they're both really funny.

Not only do I not know that they're both really funny, I resolutely deny this ridiculous claim because I've been watching them a lot longer than the past few years and what I consider funny is not on par with your comedic standards. Obviously.
I don't know what the fuck you mean about President Lincoln. He is/was our funniest ever president. He didn't have writers giving him jokes, he thought them up himself because of his own great sense of humor.

What I mean is that mentioning Lincoln and the modern day Republican party is a clear sign of a moron or a dishonest broker like Schmidt or Wilson that have apparently conned you into believing the Southern Strategy never took place.

by Anonymousreply 66October 25, 2020 8:34 AM

Liberals are not funny. Chelsea Handler, Samantha Bee, Amy Shumer all suck. Meanwhile, you have everyone from Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Ricky Gervais all saying that progressive humor sucks. Sure, they may not all be conservatives, but they would all roll their eyes at the responses given in this thread (they are just too mean, how dare they?!) George Carlin was no conservative but he would shit on all these "liberal" comedians.

by Anonymousreply 67October 25, 2020 8:44 AM

Republicans being funny is not the same thing as funny Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 70October 25, 2020 8:58 AM

R67 you’re not making the distinction between liberalism and political correctness. Of course Carlin was a liberal guy, but he basically despised political correctness (for many reasons). But it’s increasingly hard to find liberals who aren’t politically correct.

The latter almost certainly ruins humor (and is why you almost never see good comedy movies anymore), but a good comedian also inherently questions things and punches holes into conventions and conventional wisdom. Those qualities are antithetical to traditional conservatism (although you can find more libertarian types, sometimes).

by Anonymousreply 71October 25, 2020 12:34 PM

Let’s dispense with the accepted notion that political correctness resides only among liberals. We don’t typically call it political correctness, but conservatives practice it in the context of the military, the police & religion. Get back to me when an atheist has a chance at being elected to a major position.

by Anonymousreply 72October 25, 2020 12:48 PM

George Carlin was not conservative and you can bet if he were alive today he'd be mercilessly mocking Orange Turd.

I never found Dennis Miller funny. Even back before he turned hard right he had a smug "aren't I too funny?" look when he delivered lines.

by Anonymousreply 73October 25, 2020 12:50 PM

If I notice that Steve Schmidt and Rick Wilson are really funny, I'm in denial about the Southern Strategy?

And Lincoln can't be referenced as a funny Republican politician because he was funny and Republican too long ago?

I see, well if you have any other words of wisdom, do share them, dear.

by Anonymousreply 74October 25, 2020 1:23 PM

I liked Dennis Miller’s joke about the reunification of the two Germanys & how it brought to mind the prospect of a reunion between Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin. He wasn’t a fan of their previous work, he said, & wasn’t interested in seeing what they may do together in the future.

by Anonymousreply 75October 25, 2020 1:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 77October 25, 2020 1:45 PM

There are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, conservatives don't have the same sense of humor and aren't very funny.

by Anonymousreply 78October 25, 2020 2:53 PM

Donald Trump can be pretty fucking funny. He pisses me off so at the time it's hard to enjoy but his phrasing and sarcasm is some of the funniest shit ever to come out of Washington. I low-key like when he rips into people at rallies it can, again at times, be funny.

At the last debate when Biden dropped the mic with the "Republican Congress" line, Trump's sarcastic tone "well, you've gotta talk them into Joe.." is exactly that funny tone I'm talking about. He is a grade-A troll.

R65, while I absolutely understand where you're coming from and knowing their role in bringing us the southern strategy and Sarah Palin and bringing rise to Trump, I don't hold them in such contempt as I do the media and their role in bringing rise to Trump. The reason I say that is because you cannot deny they are playing a huge role in helping to bring down Trump. We can't win this without peeling off some Republicans.

Just because we are enjoying TLP approach, does not mean we will suddenly jump on board things like corporate tax cuts. We're not dumbass deplorables who believe every fucking thing out of Trump's mouth.

They see Trump as a threat and they are making every effort to help bring him down. That is a huge sacrifice for them because they are burning bridges to do this and putting country over party. That does not mean we will automatically adopt their belief system, but I respect that they recognize how low their own party has sunk and they recognize their part in doing so and are trying to make up for it.

RWNJs and Conservatives have no self-awareness, so they are unable to successfully engage in true humor. They do rely on bigotry, homophobia, misogyny, and xenophobia as themes for their weak attempts at humor because "othering" is their primary (and behind-the-tiimes) worldview.

by Anonymousreply 94October 25, 2020 5:38 PM

You laugh *at* Republicans, not with them. They can't do "humor" but they excel at "self-own" being the butt of jokes. This goes doubly so for the Conservatives, but laughing at Conservatives is also mildly cruel because they're so pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 95October 25, 2020 5:43 PM

Republicans are unintentionally funny. Like a president being serious when he praises himself for bringing back "Merry Christmas"

The best comedians don't discriminate in their targets. If you can't laugh at yourself, or are afraid of upsetting people, then you're an activist and not a comedian. Dave Chappelle did a memorable bit about how he wanted to hold back his trans jokes because there was a trans person in the audience, but did the bit anyway and found that she laughed harder than everyone else in the room. My favorite comedy is personal not political.

Didn't Fox News attempt a Daily Show-ish program a while back? I know it didn't run very long.

R97 agree and it’s also true that “real progress” isn’t truly made for a particular group until you can joke about them the way you can everyone else. Although they usually have to go thru that “noble/Sidney Poitier” phase first.

R98, they did. "The 1/2 Hour News Hour". It was as awful as you'd expect.

Mike Nelson of MST3K and Rifftrax is very funny. He’s a conservative republican from Wisconsin.
Amy Shumer I don't really care for her material but she's a lot funnier than any troglodyte comedian you'd consider funny.

I don't like a lot of her stuff (including her personality), but I think she's a great comedienne on the strength of "Girl You Don't Need Makeup" alone. That Emmy for her writers was well deserved.

On the topic of blonde liberal comediennes, the genius of Maria Bamford can't be left out.

Funny how most [italic]Cheers[/italic] fans overlook the fact that the show has at least three Republicans on it and that two of the creators were Mormons.

I am constantly laughing at Republicans when they say"Trump keeps his promises" or "Trump is the best President ever" or "Trump gets things done" they are hilarious OP.
