They often don't really care for (or about) black people, but gravitate towards large, loud, animated black women without filters (you, go, girl!) and imagine some sort of kinship with them.
Which means, of course, that they're not at all racist. And yet outrageous.

Tom of Finland's work.
Many younger men find it historically fascinating and/or fun and campy, but impossible to take seriously.
Equally true of a lot of 20th century homoerotic art.

Stereotypes are how they define themselves. They think they're "bi" or "pansexual" (retarded) because they aren't flaming even though all they want to do is suck dick. It's pathetic.

References to THE GOLDEN GIRLS, DESIGNING WOMEN, and other 1980s pop culture.
Early Bette Midler, Joan Rivers, and their legacy of "outrageous" female comics with large gay followings: Sandra Bernhard, Margaret Cho, Kathy Griffin. Fun at the time, but nothing dates more poorly than "edgy" standup, IMHO.

Selling all the old stuff and restyling with Ikea, H&M, Zara, etc. Just like the young. Selling immense record collections to the young hipsters, now that you can get some money, again. Turning their backs on everything that speaks of old gay culture. Blending in and disappearing. Being "post-gay", just like the 20 year olds.

The weird way that paid sex workers (almost always described as "rentboys" or "escorts," as if) are fetishisized by elders, just as performers in porn are. But also marginalized, as if they are some exotic species altogether.

I guess I’m n the category (53). Since some of you turned this from things found edgy to just negative things I can say about elder gays, I will freely admit that I have no idea what Edgy is. I do agree that wrapping yourself in the culture of youth usually ends up looking sad after a certain point. I am sure that there are people who see me riding my skateboard And think I look ridiculous. I don’t care. I’ve been doing it all my life.
Really, with the ubiquity of the internet, what is really edgy anymore? Edgy to me was something you had to seek out that was not known to the public at large. A music festival that you found out about only through word of mouth or a subscription to an obscure magazine. People today, and not just young people, are regurgitations of whatever ideal persona they have picked out of a catalog. Edgy disappeared about twenty years ago.
