[quote]Claudia Lamb, who played Heather Hartman on 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman', was a radio journalist for many years. She left it when Clear Radio or Clear Channel (I don't recall what they were called, some conglomerate) destroyed the industry, and is now retired and occasionally posts on her blog.
Claudia also is on Twitter and posts frequently, as does 90-year-old Mamie Van Doren. Both loathe Trump and are sharp as tacks.
My favorite example is Shelley Smith, the gorgeous model who was on a lot of 1980s shows but left Hollywood to become the founder of a fertility clinic. Her game show appearances ensured a lot of people earned a lot of money -- she was fast and brilliant.

R153, I accidentally stumbled upon Valerie's cooking show the other morning. I thought to myself, "It can't be that bad." It was by far the frau-iest thing I've ever watched. I'm talking frau-ier than Paula Deen, Barefoot Contessa, Rachael Ray, and Giada. Valerie is either playing herself on the cooking show (likely), or she knows who the target audience is and just goes with it. She--like many child actors/actress--seems to have a severe case of arrested development. Everything was, "yummers, delish, or--best yet--Let Me Have a Valerie Moment to Myself."

Valerie was probably uber wealthy before the cooking thing fell in her fat lap. She got 50% of Eddie Van Halen’s money, after all. Plus she was a working actress from her early teens until her 30s, she probably doesn’t need the money, just wants the attention.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | October 20, 2020 10:10 PM |
She was a working actress up til about 8 years ago. She had Hot in Cleveland for several years. Hosting cooking shows on the Food Network is not a non-showbiz career. She's basically become a game show host.

true, she basically is still performing. I think that’s why in some ways her cooking program is a hit. she grew up in from the camera so she knows how to take direction, she doesn’t need to know how to cook she just needs to know how to rehearse.

I really find this thread kind of fascinating. Not in a bitchy, let me shit on people who made more money than be at one point, but in human behavior.
Quite a few of these examples made really good money at the time. Some just left acting for more "regular" careers like lan Mitchell-Smith at R43. It was a one time break out, and he looks like he saw that acting may not be a full time gig.
Geoffrey Owens at R6 though.. I would have thought he would have made a substantial amount of money on the Cosby Show over the years, but maybe not. I know agent fees, taxes, etc. can take their toll. I certainly don't piss on him like some here for working a regular job. It is what 99.9% of us do every day.

After appearing in his last film in 1965, Hall became an airline pilot (his father had flown with the Army Air Force during the Second World War). In 1967 he went to work for cargo carrier Flying Tiger Airlines as an apprentice co-pilot on the L-1049H, and eventually became a captain flying the Boeing 747. In 1989, Flying Tiger was purchased by FedEx and Hall flew the DC-10 until he retired in 2003. He later flew for a private company with businesses in the U.S. and Japan.
Hall wrote the novel Apsara Jet, which was published in 2001 under the pen name Nicolas Merriweather (a name often used by his father). The book draws on Hall's knowledge of both commercial airlines and Southeast Asia in telling the story of a Vietnam War vet who gets involved in the illegal drug trade.
