In many Hispanic cultures negrito/negrita is a term of endearment used even when the person is not of African descent.

R2 -- exactly. And equally, some can be nicknamed 'rubio' (which means blond), though they may not particularly look like they just landed from Stockholm, but rather b/c they have a slightly lighter complexion...
