How successful those were we'll never know, just as we'll never know how many people died over there. I disagree about British recovery. Britain certainly changed, especially with decolonization. But their pound up is one of the worlds most respected currencies. (Euro, Pound, Dollar, Swiss Franc, Yen).

Britain watched Germany occupy Austria, and Czechoslovakia, and finally attack Poland. The Great European powers has been trying for a couple hundred years to keep a balance of power in Europe, so that no one country grew strong enough to challenge the others. There is quite a bit of rewriting history where "blue" states wanted strict lockdowns and "red" states wanted everything open. That wasn't at all how things played out in the beginning. Both liberal and conservative governors were defiant. California, for example, has sued the Trump administration for withholding funding on federal mandates all the time. Had Trump issued a federal order, it would have played out the same way. While it's not surprising that state and local leaders fail to take responsibility, the information coming from the WHO and CDC was misleading, leading to a lot of bad decisions.
