Damn, did Amy put on weight for this role or did she just pack on some pounds?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 14, 2020 1:40 PM |
I thought that was Amy Schumer.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 14, 2020 1:43 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 14, 2020 2:04 PM |
I refused to read his book because he's a Repug asshole and his social analysis wasn't very complex or deep.
But if they went more in this direction for the film.....I may be enticed to watch.

Not really the South, though. This is western PA, W Virginia, Ohio......Appalachia........
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 14, 2020 2:05 PM |
I’ll be watching. Amy Adams is my favorite actress. Being from hill billy NC I could relate to a lot! Glenn close looks like me great aunt.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 14, 2020 2:09 PM |
Looks good.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 14, 2020 2:11 PM |
Damn. The guy playing the older version of the son is HOT.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 14, 2020 2:11 PM |
Is this Glenn Close's version of August: Osage County?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 14, 2020 2:14 PM |
Glorification of the trailer park trash lifestyle, and alas poor downtrodden white people bullshit.
Pass.

The books is actually supposed to be pretty good.
His take on the true drivers of the shift from strongly democrat to rabidly rethug for that population are interesting if a little superficial.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 14, 2020 2:25 PM |
Too many Academy Award nominees in this movie, aren't they? But real G in the movie, this movie is DOA for the Oscar for makeup then.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 14, 2020 2:30 PM |
WOW, Gabriel Basso is playing a lawyer now, Nick Robinson is still in high school. hahahahahahahah
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 14, 2020 2:33 PM |
At least G didn't have to sit in the make-up chair for hours or bother with wigs.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 14, 2020 2:36 PM |
"His take on the true drivers of the shift from strongly democrat to rabidly rethug for that population are interesting if a little superficial."
Making lame excuses and rationalizations for the laziness, stubbornness, arrogance and sheer stupidity/gullibility of his drug addled friends, relatives and neighbors is hardly the sign of a good writer.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 14, 2020 2:38 PM |
I thought Glenn Close was Cloris Leachman at first glance.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 14, 2020 2:44 PM |

If it is, hopefully it's the good one. Cause Meryl's was freaking terrible.

Hillbillies and a bombastic score by that hack Hans Zimmer just don't go together well. Bring back the fucking banjos!

So they elevate poverty and ignorance, infuse it with nobility, and ignore the insularity and suspicion that govern their existence...
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 14, 2020 3:19 PM |
The book boiled down to these hillbillies hating Obama, not because he was Black (the very idea!) but because they felt that he and the coastal elite "spoke down to them". Fuck the elegy, let me know when the last of these opiod and meth-addicted wastrels are buried so we pave over the graveyard and put in a Starbucks.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 14, 2020 3:26 PM |
Is that what this is about? Why white trash hate Obama and love Trump?
Do they realize that Trump is a coastal elite albeit a trashier one than the norm?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 14, 2020 3:28 PM |
I had a Trumper neighbor named Pam who looked just like Amy Adams does in this movie. Spitting image. She is not very book smart and she's still sending out crazy Trumper shit via FB.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 14, 2020 3:31 PM |
Thanks but four years of enabled trash is quite enough for me. Hard pass.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 14, 2020 3:32 PM |
It's the trailer that's making it so corny. The music is too much and they keep showing one dramatic clip after another. They needed to be a bit more chill and let it build up.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 14, 2020 3:37 PM |
I live in the burbs south of Dayton. I drove through that area of Middletown once on my way back from visiting a cute little nowhere town NE of Cincy. It scared the shit out of me. I was unaware it existed. There is an old steel mill nearby and the whole area is total backwoods. Trump signs everywhere. But a few miles past it and one is back into the shiny bland mid-western sprawl. It was very strange.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 14, 2020 3:41 PM |
The sweeping music! Too much.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 14, 2020 3:42 PM |
Any photos of them in costume and makeup - that candid glamor photo of the two at the top of thread isn't helpful
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 14, 2020 3:58 PM |
Yay! I started the thread a0 few days go asking if this would finally land Glenn an Oscar. From the trailer it looks like she is co-lead instead of Supporting and may be giving a fantastic performance!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 14, 2020 4:01 PM |
Too close to home for me.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 14, 2020 4:06 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 14, 2020 4:09 PM |
R39 There are no pictures of them together anywhere! I think Cloris Leachman as Goodie Phyllis Lindstrom has danced with the devil and dropped 10-20 years from her age which she can magically grow back when she wants to play a wacky senior!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 14, 2020 4:12 PM |
Oh wait. Glenn Close is now a wacky senior. Oops.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 14, 2020 4:13 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 14, 2020 4:13 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 14, 2020 4:31 PM |
R7 "Not really the South, though. This is western PA, W Virginia, Ohio......Appalachia."
The Appalachian South is south of the Mason-Dixon line and southeast of the Ohio River, that was the traditional definition before the App. Regional Commission was created and made everything in the mountain range "Appalachia", which is not a cultural region but a mountain range.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 14, 2020 4:33 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 14, 2020 4:41 PM |
I, too, am getting sick and tired of these poor white trash melodramas as if we are supposed to care about any of these “people.“ They are literally everything wrong with America from its inception to the present day, and if we don’t do something drastic to get rid of them, they’re going to drag us all into the gutter with them.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 14, 2020 4:42 PM |
Amy Adams not playing Tonya Harding was the biggest missed opportunity ever. After that, Rose Byrne not playing Sharon Tate.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 14, 2020 4:46 PM |
Glenn will definitely win for this. There is not even a hint of the sexy Alex Forest in her.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 14, 2020 4:53 PM |
The Academy always awards beauties who "ugly up" for role. Glenn is a shoo-in. She ws too polished and pretty in "The Wife".
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 14, 2020 4:55 PM |
My mother used to own glasses like those on Glenn. Then she went blind and died
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 14, 2020 4:56 PM |
Amy has completed her transition into Tonya Harding. They are now one person.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 14, 2020 5:00 PM |
I want to see this! I love Amy Adams and will watch!
Also: I recall reading that Amy’s mother abandoned Amy and her siblings and just took off when she was a kid. (They re-connected somehow when Amy was an adult, but it was apparently a very traumatic part of her life and screwed up her childhood).
It will be interesting to see what she brings to the part of a fucked up mother character....

Btw, Ron Howard is a *big time*, lifelong Democrat (as is Glenn Close), so there is no way this is going to be some “celebration of Republicanism” as some of you are suggesting.
Howard will cut any political stuff from the book out and just make it an autobiographical family drama. I want to see it.

If it wasn’t for the fucking GOP we could’ve just let the south leave the union without a war so that they would be part of Mexico by 1900 like they deserve. Then the rest of us could have joined Canada and put an end to this nightmare of American imperialism once and for all.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | October 14, 2020 6:11 PM |
They give a beautiful woman like Amy the role of a homely looking woman and they "transform" her for the role, when a legion of normal looking woman can't get job and they are forced to get plastic, (and sometimes) bariatric surgery. The diversity means nothing in this cases
by Anonymous | reply 64 | October 14, 2020 6:25 PM |
I have a feeling that this is mostly Adams' film and Close will be put in the supporting category.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | October 14, 2020 6:44 PM |
It's so charming of y'all to assume this film will be nominated for Academy Awards.

by Anonymous | reply 67 | October 14, 2020 7:09 PM |
R66 if an awful movie like "The Fighter" can actually win Oscars then it isn't much of a stretch for this one to be nominated. Although it actually helped Melissa Leo that she actually looks like a hillbilly.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | October 14, 2020 7:33 PM |
I don't think the movie is going to be any big celebration of hillbilly trash. I hope it shows them in Full Deplorable Hypocrisy as they claim self-reliance but then have their hands out for all the gubmint cheese they can get, including joining the military.
The trailer does look a bit scenery chewing. Like an Afterschool Special on the dangers of meth.

by Anonymous | reply 77 | October 14, 2020 8:52 PM |
It would be so fucked up if Amy Adams and Glenn Close were both nominated for Best Actress from this movie (especially when they hold the record for receiving the most nominations without any wins) and lose again.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 14, 2020 8:57 PM |

A group of writers & artists published a book called "Appalachian Reckoning" as a response to "Hillbilly Elegy". Lots of Appalachian folks thought HE was garbage & have been pretty vocal about it.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | October 14, 2020 10:11 PM |

G's accent was random. Was that a corn-cob pipe she was smoking at the end of the trailer? If Renee won for this hillbilly-inspirational shit in "Cold Mountain", G can probably do the same (for supporting) , and maybe Adams too (for lead). I'm still recovering from "Cold Mountain", so I'd better skip it.

Amy Adams is probably the most overrated actress of the past 20 years (and that includes overrated Jennifer Lawrence). When she's good, she's barely passable. When she's not, she's downright awful.
And I thought Glenn was above awards grubbing.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | October 15, 2020 2:13 PM |
The only thing Glenn is above is ground. For now.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | October 15, 2020 2:40 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 109 | October 15, 2020 4:34 PM |
I went to see 'Yellow Rose' in the theatre yesterday (I was the only one in the audience of a 3pm matinee...the film was cute and heartfelt). One of the previews was for 'Nomadland' starring Frances McDormand, being released in December. Literally the whole 30-second trailer was her quietly walking thru an RV park, and only speaking to one lady very briefly. I immediately thought to myself, "There's her third Oscar." Frances doesn't need a trailer chock-full of chewing the scenery and impersonating the Terminator to win her third Oscar...she literally walked thru an RV park and simply *acted*. Poor Glenn...this might do her in, although as someone mentioned above, they'll submit her in the Best Supporting Actress category. Even then, she might get beat by Anna Kendrick for 'Trolls: World Tour'.

I’d rather see a dramatic adaption of The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia. Glenn could play Bertie Way who weeps where her children get high at her birthday party. Amy could play Sue Bob “the sexy one” and they could even include Jennifer Lawrence as Mousie or Kirk

Meryl wasn't awful awful in August. She was out acted but it wasn't necessarily her fault. John Wells the director allowed her to act in her own movie. But a lot of the actors followed her into that nonsense. Julia and Margo were acting in an entirely different movie. Closer to the play too.

by Anonymous | reply 125 | October 17, 2020 9:59 PM |
If she goes supporting, Glenn is going to have to duke it out with Ellen Burstyn over who will be the more beloved acting veteran. Ellen is getting rave reviews for Pieces of a Woman.. Mary J Blige is also getting buzz for Dinah Washington in Respect and could net her a third oscar nomination. Other contenders include Olivia Colman, Toni Collette, Marisa Tomei, and yes Meryl Streep for The Prom.
If Glenn goes lead, she faces stiff competition from the never rewarded Michelle Pfeiffer, acting legend Sophia Loren, McDormand, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Kate Winslet and her own costar Amy Adams.
Honestly, she should just film Sunset Boulevard already. It would give an automatic oscar. Does she really want to win for THIS?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | October 17, 2020 10:15 PM |
If Laura Dern could win for doing next to nothing in the overrated "Marriage Story" it would be a crying shame for Glenn to lose for this. She's more impressive in this trailer than Dern was in that whole movie.

I’ve heard nothing about this book, its author or the movie until now.
Thanks, OP, for posting the trailer and bringing it to attention.
This is significant for me as both my parents are boomers from the hollers of West Virginia. My father had an outhouse at home, and I recall going over English grammar books with my Mum’s grandfather who was a coal miner with only a 2nd grade education.
Hence, I have great empathy for the circumstances that the author, JD Vance describes. And I sense with my parents similar threads: they are both Republicans with similar- sounding outlooks. I sense an anger and resentment in the both circumstances that shaped them and the surprising lack of generosity of spirit embodied the hard-right wing ethos.
That said, my folks have been incredibly generous with my sibling and me. Incredibly so; to the point it is hard to reconcile their political leanings with their deeply intimate ones.
My sibling and I are both graduates of higher education (physician and attorney) and are progressive in our outlooks and political beliefs; as well as having lived many places in the world.
I don’t know if I will see the film. The trailer seems overwrought and the Hans Zimmer score too much.
We’ll see.
Also,Usha Chilukuri is the author’s wife. She clerked for Justice Roberts and Kavanaugh. My sibling knows of her through colleagues “on the other side of the fence”.
Lastly, JD Vance recently converted to Catholicism. Wonder what his thoughts are on Amy Covid? Suppose I’d rather not know.

And JD Vance was the protégé of Amy Chua, the Tiger Mom fascist.

Given how many DLers self-report coming from this sort of background, I will be curious to see what the response is on here

What's the verdict, DL? Is this shit any good or what? (It's a Ron Howard film, after all.)

The critics are ripping this movie a new asshole. I don't know if G can win her Oscar when the consensus among critics is that the film is a turd.
Then again, critics hated The Iron Lady as well, and M won her third Oscar.

So I did watch it and it was funny but also made me cry like a bitch. Maybe it’s because its been an emotional month or because I come from trash.

You know there are alcoholics and drug addicts everywhere. There are poor people with no hope, no opportunity everywhere. These people could have been Black, or Brown as well as white. This is the "left behind" population of every fucking state. They exist in upstate New York as much as they exist in Kentucky. Or California or Oklahoma, South Dakota or Mississippi.
And the irony is that Vance, the author, who lives in Cincinnati, is a died in the wool, "Social Conservative" Republican, by his own description, with a wife who clerked for both Brett Kavanaugh and John Roberts. He wants to run for the Senate from Ohio eventually...as a Conservative Republican. Why is this ironic? Because it has been the very policies of the fucking "Social conservative" Republicans that have created this shit with their Uber Capitalism, low taxes bullshit.
The scene in the movie where he is maxing out credit cards to scrape together two weeks in a rehab facility for his mother says it all. The movie shows him sitting in her hospital room begging the doctors and nurses to let her stay longer. They refuse. She has no insurance, so he has a great deal of difficulty finding a rehab facility to transfer her to. It is a very realistic dramatization of what happens to people with no insurance.

I watched the beginning but the son is not appealing and I couldn't get into it but may try again. Glenn was a hoot as granny though.

Whenever I see these ads
I keep thinking Amy Adams' hair has never looked better - it just suits her, you know
and those overalls are just as cute as they can be
(do you mind if I ask where you got those?)
