“Good Vibrations” by Marky Mark is truly an All Time BOP

It deserves more love and praise. It’s such a great song, and almost like comfort food for the ears. Marky Mark has so much talent and beauty, still to this day. I don’t get the hate for him. He’s repented of his wrong doings and has grown and changed.

As for the song, a BOP. Not shocked to learn it was a number 1 hit in many Countries, including the USA.

I wish he would make new music.

I think you left out someone.

The MAIN reason this song was a hit (beside Marks's body in the video.

(Loleatta Holloway and the samples of her voice from "Love Sensation.")

by Anonymousreply 1October 14, 2020 12:55 AM

These days are trying enough. But throw in new music by Marky Mark, that's just going to push people off the edge.

by Anonymousreply 2October 14, 2020 12:56 AM

How does someone’s body sell singles? I hate that mentality. People aren’t buying his single and putting him to number one simply because his body is nice.

If that were the case he would have had many more hits.

by Anonymousreply 3October 14, 2020 1:01 AM

R3 has a problem with time and how to construct sentences with proper tense.

Oh. dear.

by Anonymousreply 4October 14, 2020 1:04 AM

Is the Term “bop” an old person term? It makes me think of a 50s sock hop.

by Anonymousreply 5October 14, 2020 1:07 AM

claims to be 32. He's the OP and uses "bop" ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

Is he Eldergay status?

by Anonymousreply 6October 14, 2020 1:09 AM

I fucking hate him but I still listen to this song all the time when I go running, and have ever since I was a teenager jerking off to his workout video

by Anonymousreply 7October 14, 2020 1:10 AM

OP, You are kidding...yes?

Mark Wahlberg is talentless. He does nothing in that video but shout, throw punches, show off his upper body (Damn Fine), drop to his haunches, throw punches, and repeat.

The other dancers are great, as was Loleatta Holloway.

by Anonymousreply 8October 14, 2020 1:11 AM

So how did Southie thug become a trendy thing back then? He could easily have become the first instahoe had it been around in his day and the first of his kind with an OF.

by Anonymousreply 9October 14, 2020 1:13 AM

At least he featured Holloway in the video. Many other "artists" weren't as gracious.

by Anonymousreply 10October 14, 2020 1:14 AM

His single Wildside had a cool sound. I liked it back then.

by Anonymousreply 11October 14, 2020 1:15 AM

I came watching it.

It's definitely art for the ages, OP.

by Anonymousreply 12October 14, 2020 1:15 AM

OP, come on, come on.

by Anonymousreply 13October 14, 2020 1:17 AM

Isn’t this what led to him being hired as Calvin Klein’s main underwear model? And that led to him getting cast in FEAR which led to Boogie Nights and the rest is history?

by Anonymousreply 14October 14, 2020 1:17 AM

OP is either elderly trying to pretend to be a Zoomer, or a Zoomer 🤔

by Anonymousreply 15October 14, 2020 1:22 AM

The song was a hit and made Marky Mark a household name as Marky Mark. His antics during Live performances for this, where he would always strip down to just his white underwear, or sometime bare his ass, were what made CK come for him and hire him. Mark loved being naked.

If social media were around then he would inevitably be the biggest Instahoe around, and probably drop an OnlyFans when his music career dried up.

by Anonymousreply 16October 14, 2020 1:23 AM

There's still time for an Onlyfans. I'd pay for it!

by Anonymousreply 17October 14, 2020 1:27 AM

Did David Geffen violate him?

by Anonymousreply 18October 14, 2020 1:28 AM

Gotta love the Queens on here always going on and on about how Talentless he is (they have claimed this for years) meanwhile he is an Oscar nominee, has tons of box office hits, and worth hundreds of millions.

r17 he doesn't need one now.

by Anonymousreply 19October 14, 2020 1:29 AM

Made made him Calvin Kleins pet was that he brought his antics from his concert days to the runway, something that made him stand out (at that time). He would walk out in his jeans for an underwear runway, let his jeans slide down, then grab and play with his junk in front of everyone, then run off.

He was a star.

I found one of his runways.

Calvin Klein is a pig. I feel sorry for the women in that video, many are clearly very uncomfortable showing their breasts.

by Anonymousreply 21October 14, 2020 1:38 AM

Who was the male model with the extra wide shoulders towards the end?

One thing DL can appreciate about Marky Mark is that he for sure used to love showing off his body. I was not shocked at all when he was wanted for Boogie Nights, and when he accepted. He probably demanded more nudity than the script originally called for from his character!

Its a shame he regrets that movie

Sad footnote to the writer of Loleatta Holloway's song "Love Sensation" (Dan Hartman). The closet kills:

"Hartman was never married and had no children. He died on March 22, 1994, at his Westport, Connecticut, home from an AIDS-related brain tumor. A closeted gay man, he was diagnosed with HIV in the late 1980s. He kept his HIV status a secret and supposedly did not seek treatment, even after friend and intermittent collaborator Holly Johnson (formerly of the band Frankie Goes to Hollywood) announced his own HIV status in 1991. His remains were cremated and he was survived by both parents, his brother Dave, and sister Kathy."

by Anonymousreply 26October 14, 2020 1:57 AM

While I agree with the fact that he is a competent actor (not incredibly talented, as many people say), he is one of the most brutish, ignorant and underclass people ever... Also, who would have said that someone whose only claim to fame was playing with his junk in public, would become an ultra-conservative promoter of backward values?

It's also quite remarkable how everyone has forgotten that this guy blinded a man in a racist attack and used to throw stones at black children.

by Anonymousreply 27October 14, 2020 1:57 AM

This is not a great song. It’s like an SNL skit. Marky Mark was only able to move past it because of his looks and body.

by Anonymousreply 28October 14, 2020 1:58 AM

R28 I’m sure it’s so hard moving past a #1 Hit

by Anonymousreply 29October 14, 2020 2:00 AM

He only had 2 hits (granted he had like maybe 5 or 6 singles total, so I guess the math isn’t bad). Good Vibrations went to #1 and the follow up went to #10.

The rest flopped and he quit music because his modeling career skyrocketed

by Anonymousreply 30October 14, 2020 2:03 AM

R29 Right Said Fred, Rick Dees, Vanilla Ice and other horrible acts had Billboard number 1s. Doesn’t make them John Lennon. It means American taste sucks a lot of the time.

by Anonymousreply 31October 14, 2020 2:08 AM

Yeah, but unlike many of those, Mark also got almost all critical praise for his song. Many of the others were trashed.

Bill Lamb from About.com said Mark Wahlberg "had a history of scrapes with the law as a teenager, but his ready-for-video buffed body and good looks, combined with energetic dance beats and Loleatta Holloway's diva-esque vocals, made for a smash pop hit." AllMusic editor Steve Huey noted that Wahlberg's "aggressively delivered raps were fairly simplistic, but not comical; one of the main hooks was a simple piano sample that ascended, descended, and reascended." He added that "Good Vibrations" "was easily the most infectious song Marky Mark ever recorded". In 2017, BuzzFeed listed the song at number 43 in their list of "The 101 Greatest Dance Songs Of the '90s". Dave Sholin from the Gavin Report wrote that "bustin' out of Boston, Donnie Wahlberg's younger brother, Marky Mark, is kickin' it and makin' one serious debut! The Wahlberg Brothers wrote and produced this hot track—something they deserve to point to with pride. Credit Loleatta Holloway with takin' it up more than a few notches on a chorus nothing short of incredible." Music Week commented, "Sampling is also an art form dear to Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch. But, to their credit, their debut single acknowledges their debut to Loleatta Holloway's now-familiar "It's such a good vibration". This may not be a big hit, but with 20-year-old Marky's rhythmic rapping, good looks and bad-boy image, it's chartbound."

This song brings me right back to the gay bars I visited in the 90s. I would have done anything to give Marky Mark a blowjob.

by Anonymousreply 36October 15, 2020 2:37 AM

"Bop" is used all the time by Black Twitter (and they're mostly comprised of millennials and gen-zers). If you visit Lipstick Alley, they use it all the time when discussing popular music from back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 37October 15, 2020 2:46 AM

R3 in the age of MTV an artist’s looks definitely helped sell their music. That’s not to say there was no talent involved, but being attractive or having a great sense of style didn’t hurt.

by Anonymousreply 46October 15, 2020 9:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 47October 15, 2020 9:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 49October 15, 2020 9:45 PM

As mentioned, quite a few factors contributed to Mark Wahlberg's success in the beginning. He was so hot.

by Anonymousreply 50October 15, 2020 9:50 PM

It makes me want to beat a Vietnamese guy in the head! Good vibrations happen when his body hits the ground ⚰️💀

by Anonymousreply 51October 15, 2020 9:55 PM

He was lucky that his older brother hit it big with New Kids on the Block. Marky would never have had a "hit" of any sort (outside of selling his hot hole on the street corner for another quick fix) without that association. He wasn't the only one who attached themselves to the coattails of of the massively successful NKOTB juggernaut - "I'll Be Your Everything" by Tommy Page was also a number one hit during that era. Mark would have similarly been a one hit wonder were it not for his sexually charged good looks (EVERYONE wanted to fuck him and for good reason). Powerful closet-cases (Calvin Klein who was still in the closet and David Geffen who would come out right around this time or shortly after) took notice and helped him career-wise in exchange for....hmm... Calvin made his a household name with a huge underwear and jeans campaign with top model Kate Moss (who was also a new star and perhaps that last model to be labeled a supermodel - back when that meant something). Geffen connected him with roles in Hollywood and despite his limited acting ability - his Boston thug persona and very fuckable good looks were a draw to at least some movie goers. His big break was actually The Basketball Diaries with Leonardo DiCaprio - a minor hit but one that garnered critical acclaim due mostly to his costar. The mediocre Fear furthered his career when he was again attached to the more talented rising star actress Reese Witherspoon. Boogie Nights was such an excellent movie with such a talented cast; when he landed that iconic role and finally turned out good to great acting (in a role easy for him to play - himself) - the rest was history.

by Anonymousreply 52October 15, 2020 10:02 PM

Was the "BOP" based on the real "Good Vibrations"?

by Anonymousreply 53October 15, 2020 10:23 PM

OP, I am unfamiliar with the term "a BOP" so I looked it up and the answer I got was that it stood for "a Bunch of Pussies" is that what you meant?

by Anonymousreply 54October 15, 2020 10:58 PM

"Bop" is a good thing. Like most AA slang, it'll probably get picked by mainstream media and get played out in a few months.

by Anonymousreply 55October 15, 2020 11:25 PM

Yeah, it's real fleek.

by Anonymousreply 56October 15, 2020 11:31 PM

Is it really that difficult to make sense of the term "bop" and its genesis? It's song so good/catchy that it makes you want to get up and bop; i.e., dance. For me, "Good Vibrations" is not one of those songs, but I understand the concept.

by Anonymousreply 57October 15, 2020 11:57 PM

[quote]Is it really that difficult to make sense of the term "bop" and its genesis?

Yes. OP typed it in all caps, so I thought it was an acronym, meaning something like Butt On Penis.

by Anonymousreply 58October 16, 2020 12:46 AM

Marky Mark had ZERO musical talent and couldn't even rap. OP please stop typing "BOP".

by Anonymousreply 59October 16, 2020 1:30 AM

[quote] Yes. OP typed it in all caps, so I thought it was an acronym, meaning something like Butt On Penis.

Well, we could always make that an alternative meaning. I know what a bop is, but I like your definition and "bunch of pussies" isn't bad, either.

by Anonymousreply 60October 16, 2020 2:55 AM

Some of you are very old and your comments expose that

by Anonymousreply 61October 16, 2020 12:41 PM

The sampling of Loleatta Holloway's Love Sensation is what makes the song. Her contrasting soaring vocals work well against Marky's limited vocals.

by Anonymousreply 62October 16, 2020 1:30 PM

R61 - no shame in being old. You'll be there one day. Your comment shows how stupid and young you are.

This song was a fluke hit - they were looking for white rappers. He has nothing to do with the chorus - Loleatta Holloway does all the work in making it a good song. It does have some good bass bumps along the way.

But it's not a great song. He isn't a good rapper and he isn't a good human being. He's not handsome and his acting career is more of a nod to the need for white male blandness that normal guys can look up to.

And now he wants to turn all Christian? Fuck this guy. He's garbage.

Mahky Mahk's only value was being a sex object for gay men and horny girls to jack off too. He was cute, beautiful and sexy at his peak and the camera captured him well. But he is a no talent scumbag.

Eminem replaced him as the other hot white rapper that built a fanbase of white girls but actually had talent and earned respect of the black community. While Mahky Mahk is a racist Republican bully who pretends his rap career never existed.

Anyway, enjoy this softcore porn he made.

Wahlberg is probably the luckiest bitch in Hollywood. Every stunt he pulled led to a better career opportunity. Not getting cast as a member NKOTB got him into Marky and the Funky Bunch. That got him the CK deal, that got him cast in his first few movies, that got him in contact with George Clooney which led to a credible film career. And all that despite having partially blinded a guy in his youth.

by Anonymousreply 76November 23, 2020 12:50 AM
