Geffen connected him with roles in Hollywood and despite his limited acting ability - his Boston thug persona and very fuckable good looks were a draw to at least some movie goers. His big break was actually The Basketball Diaries with Leonardo DiCaprio - a minor hit but one that garnered critical acclaim due mostly to his costar. The mediocre Fear furthered his career when he was again attached to the more talented rising star actress Reese Witherspoon. Boogie Nights was such an excellent movie with such a talented cast; when he landed that iconic role and finally turned out good to great acting (in a role easy for him to play - himself) - the rest was history.
