R14, the Puritan Protestantism that gave Britain a civil war and a headless king has lived on in the USA in the guise of an increasingly hypocritical, falsely moralizing, "perfectionist" and reactionary mindset. Blended with an Americanized distortion of "Victorian" family values, the trait has left everything to do with sex chronically repressed, fetishized and dehumanized under a false ideal of procreative "sanctioned love."
It is the motive of the clucking busybody, half-wet in her panties while decrying "indecent" behavior.

Thanks for the Socio-history lesson r26, it's all true but so what. We're in the middle of the fight of our lives to get rid of the most corrupt leadership in recent human history. This guy and his Senate race was key to it, and he had to go and fuck up like this. Wait until after the election to indulge in carefree laissez-faire.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 3, 2020 6:19 AM |
As a North Carolinian, I don’t think this moves the needle. He is polling highly, not on name recognition or agenda, but because he’s not Tillis. The electorate in NC are fed up with both of their Senators and the popularity Cunningham has in the polls isn’t about who he is but rather who is not.

Guzman Todd said on her now-deleted LinkedIn page that she is the media relations director for a representative body of cannabis distributors in California. She was formerly an adjunct professor at California State University, where she taught in the communications department. Guzman Todd was quoted in an article on Parent.com regarding the use of cameras in childcare. She said, “I am a big fan of the cameras, they helped provide a feeling of security and allowed me to build trust by watching the caretaker’s interactions with my children.”
At the time of writing, little information is publicly visible from Guzman Todd’s Facebook page. A quote under her profile photo reads, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.”
Guzman Todd is a graduate of the University of Southern California and Occidental College. She has a master’s degree in political management from The George Washington University and a master of arts in clinical psychology, emphasis in marriage and family therapy from Pepperdine University.
An online profile for Guzman Todd refers to her as a “versatile, performance-driven strategic communications and public affairs leader.”
Online records show Guzman Todd has donated $900 to Cunningham’s campaign in four separate donations in April and September.
In May 2020, Guzman Todd started a petition on Change.org to garner support for her husband’s campaign to continue his active service in the U.S. Army so that he could qualify for a full pension. She wrote that during his time in the service, Jeremy Todd broke his spine on an airborne operation.
At the time of writing, the petition had more than 10,000 signatures. In an update to the page, Guzman Todd said she was reaching out to politicians on her husband’s behalf but was receiving no replies. Cunningham is an active lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. Cunningham has been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan and was awarded a bronze star medal.

r44 No, be happy it came out. I think he will win anyway. But it is disqualifying to run for president getting caught like this because it shows unbelievable lack of self control. It's one thing to be fucking around on a spouse. He was indiscreet, put it in writing like a fucking moron, and was doing it in the weeks leading up to an election that has a very good chance of determining the balance of power in the U.S. senate. I could even respect if he was banging the lady already but he wasn't. He was just in the early courtship stages of cheating. In writing. Fucking idiot.

All eyes are on North Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Cal Cunningham after he reportedly pulled out of a town hall event on Monday following the publication of steamy text messages between the candidate and a woman who is not his wife.
Cunningham, a Democrat challenging incumbent Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., "backed out" of a campaign event scheduled for Monday and organizers hope to reschedule, WUNC reported.
The news of Cunningham backing out of the town hall comes hours after another affair allegation against Cunningham surfaced Monday, this time from a woman claiming her friend has been having an affair with Cunningham since 2012.
Cunningham, who is married, apologized on Friday after the website NationalFile.com published steamy text messages between the candidate and a public relations strategist named Arlene Guzman Todd. The allegation that surfaced Monday purports to involve a second woman.
The second allegation hinges on a claim from Erin Brinkman, who appears to be a Los Angeles-based lawyer who served on Cunningham's state Senate steering committee from 2009 to 2010, according to the LinkedIn profile of a woman with the same name.
“He’s been having an affair with a good friend of mine since 2012. Not the woman mentioned in the story. Needless to say, my friend was devastated. But my feeling is, if they’ll cheat WITH you, they’ll cheat ON you!" reads a screengrab of a Facebook comment written by Erin Brinkman that was published by NationalFile.com on Monday.

Asked four times if there were more women yet to come forward, North Carolina U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham (D) did not answer directly, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Said Cunningham: “I’ve taken responsibility for the hurt I’ve caused in my personal life. I’ve apologized for it. I’ve said what I’m going to say about it.”
Sen. Thom Tillis (R), Cunningham’s opponent in the race, has publicly discussed a second affair allegation against Cunningham, an unconfirmed one made on Facebook by an attorney who says she knows of that relationship.

Latest NC numbers (these guys are based on the state). Non-R respondents don't care enough to stop voting for Cunningham...
PPP’s new North Carolina poll finds Cal Cunningham leading Thom Tillis 48-42. That represents a slight improvement for Cunningham from PPP’s last public poll of the race in late July when Cunningham’s advantage was 48-44.
The news over the weekend is having somewhat of an impact on Cunningham’s favorability rating, with 37% saying they have a positive opinion of him to 39% with a negative one. But that -2 net favorability rating is still 21 points better than Tillis’- he’s at -23 with 31% of voters having a favorable opinion of him to 54% with an unfavorable one.

NC media are so biased
North Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Cal Cunningham has mostly stuck to controlled virtual calls with interest groups and small, unannounced in-person appearances.

In the other NC races, the NBC/Marist poll has it among likely voters:
NC-SEN Cunningham D 53% Tillis R 43%
NC-GOV Cooper D 59% Forest R 40%

NBC/Marist is a top-rated poll, so the Florida & NC results are promising.

Tillis is widely disliked and is now solely running negative ads. It’s been shown that negative ads turn off undecided voters, who want to hear policies. Cal has been focusing on policy arguments and what he’ll do when elected.

Cal is a douche. And he got caught, well admitted to it. And it seems like one of the reasons he's not North Carolina's newest Senator.

He would not have won any way, R133.
North Carolina went to Trump.
I honestly thought that NC was turning into a purple-ish blue state, but it seems to be going backwards, like Ohio and Iowa.
All three went for Obama in 2012, and now they're all part of Trump country.

NC went for Romney in 2012. Biden did twice as well as Hillary in NC. NC re-elected its Democratic Governor. That being said, I tried to tell y’all that you shouldn’t believe polls showing Biden winning NC because polls have consistently underestimated the Republican vote in NC by 3 to 5 points. And early voting trends showed Democrats were doing a crappy job of getting Democrats out to vote, while Republicans were stampeding to the poll. Additionally, Republicans were registering tons of new voters this year, while Democrats seemed to have suspended voter registration efforts. Stupid, stupid, stupid...

Cal Cunningham deserved to lose. Reckless

I do think that there was some underestimation on the part of Cunningham supporters in how much of an effect his personal issues would have on the election. I think people who had been cheated on (my guess being this is especially true of women) thought less of him for that and even if they claimed to say they stuck to policy issues, subconsciously this lowered his support. I suspect some people that would have voted for him without a doubt but who would have never voted for Tillis just left that space blank and that gave Tillis just enough of an edge.

Nate Silver: Feel like there's a lack of hot takes from Democrats blaming Cal Cunningham for his sexts. Probably made just enough difference in a 2-point race and a 51-vote Senate would be a different world since Sinema is more subject to electoral pressure (a primary challenge) than Manchin.

I'm still pissed at him. Not only do I think he would have won if not for the scandal, but he was one of my top picks as a future presidential candidate. He would have appealed to a lot blue collar and Midwest white voters.

I agree with you, R139. A completely botched and missed opportunity. If he had won, Manchin would not be in the catbird seat and we might be able to more easily get rid of that damnable filibuster.
What a putz. And what did he get out of it? Humiliation on a national stage.

He potentially had an affair? Who gives a fuck! The GOP are raping children, and running anyway. I know it's because none of them have morals or a conscience, but fuck it. He should run.

He would have been a good buffer against Manchin and Sinema, since Georgia was still up for grabs. Is he still married?

His conduct was utterly reckless and selfish
