Today I'm binge watching nostalgic Disney live action films from the 50's 60's and 70's.

Starting with,

Million Dollar Duck

Candleshoe

Treasure Island

Davey Crocket and the River Pirates

The Parent Trap

The Ugly Dachshund

The Strongest Man in the World

That Darn Cat

The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes

The Shaggy Dog

The Love Bug

The Cat form Outer Space

Escape to Witch Mountain

Return to from Witch Mountain

by Anonymousreply 92October 5, 2020 3:29 PM

Pollyanna, my favorite.

How dare you put me last, OP!

by Anonymousreply 3October 2, 2020 5:22 PM

OP, how would you feel about being turned into a nice white rabbit?

by Anonymousreply 4October 2, 2020 5:36 PM

OP have you ever considered growing up at all?

by Anonymousreply 5October 2, 2020 5:38 PM

You're watching ALL those movies in one day?

by Anonymousreply 6October 2, 2020 5:39 PM

Rewatched Candleshoe a few years ago. It held up surprisingly well.

by Anonymousreply 7October 2, 2020 5:43 PM

The only live-action Disney film that period which rises to classic status is "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" - all the others are childish peplum. ("Mary Poppins" also counts, but has a good 15 mins of animation in the middle, so - depends on how strict we're being here.)

by Anonymousreply 8October 2, 2020 5:46 PM

[quote] Return to from Witch Mountain

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 9October 2, 2020 5:47 PM

R8, I liked that movie better when it was called [italic]Song of the South[/italic]. Only a racist would listen to the white girl cover version while ignoring the Black male original.

by Anonymousreply 10October 2, 2020 5:49 PM

I loved the Dexter Riley movies when I was a kid. (Was that his name?) I wish they had Now You See Him, Now You Don't; that was my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 11October 2, 2020 5:50 PM

R11: Literally the only good part of [italic]Superdad[/italic] is Kurt Russell playing volleyball without a shirt.

by Anonymousreply 12October 2, 2020 5:54 PM

A Jealous Bitches? thread, and you don't even share with us what sort of snacks you'll be having OP? What is this?

by Anonymousreply 13October 2, 2020 5:54 PM

It’s Disney, so there will always be likely to be something about food worked into the plot one way or another. This is understandable when you consider all the contracts the parks have with the food industry.

by Anonymousreply 14October 2, 2020 5:56 PM

No [italic]The Monkey's Uncle[/italic]? For shame!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 15October 2, 2020 5:56 PM

Are these all on Disney+, OP?

I admit to having a fondness for these movies because when I was growing up my dad always took us to every Disney movie that came out. It was during their objectively worst period -'70s-early '80s - but it's not about film criticism, it's about the warm glow of nostalgia.

by Anonymousreply 16October 2, 2020 6:02 PM

One of our Dinosaurs is Missing is another good one.

by Anonymousreply 17October 2, 2020 6:04 PM

Their objectively worst film period is now if they collaborated with a fucking concentration camp on the new [italic]Mulan[/italic] and if they ruined [italic]Artemis Fowl[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 18October 2, 2020 6:05 PM

I'll watch anything with Joe Flynn in it.

by Anonymousreply 19October 2, 2020 6:05 PM

What about Wally Cox? Wasn’t he in a bunch of these?

by Anonymousreply 20October 2, 2020 6:07 PM

[Quote] Are these all on Disney+, OP?

Don't know but I'm sure many are. I have the dvd/blu ray discs. Fun!

by Anonymousreply 21October 2, 2020 6:16 PM

You don’t have to join the Disney movie club but to get the Blu-rays. You can find them on eBay. It’s worth paying extra to get them secondhand so technically your money is not going to Disney, and once it trades hands, it ceases to be your money.

by Anonymousreply 22October 2, 2020 6:48 PM

R8 20,000 Leaks Under the Sea is one of my favorites, but I also like Treasure Island because it has classic scenery-chewer Robert Newton in it as Long John Silver.

No [italic]Moonspinners[/italic]? I'm not joining you then.

by Anonymousreply 25October 2, 2020 8:51 PM

I love The North Avenue Irregulars

It’s campy, a little less childlike in tone, and fun. It holds up pretty good.

The cast includes Cloris Leachman, Barbara Harris, the grandpa from the Gilmore Girls, Ma’am from Webster, Ruth Buzzi and Karen Valentine.

by Anonymousreply 26October 2, 2020 8:58 PM

[quote]20,000 Leaks Under the Sea

R26: I know a couple of Disney employees who met on the set of that film and married. The wife still works there, but the husband works for another studio.

by Anonymousreply 30October 3, 2020 4:30 AM

OP, do yourself a favor and watch "Annette" a serial that was part of "The Mickey Mouse Club". All 19 episodes are on Youtube. They have Annette Funicello, Tim Considine, and DL fave Mary Wickes. Here is episode 1.

"Darby O'Gill and the Little People" and also "Babes in Toyland"!!!

by Anonymousreply 32October 3, 2020 8:40 AM

Swiss Family Robinson. James MacArthur was hot as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 33October 3, 2020 8:45 AM

Child of Glass

by Anonymousreply 34October 3, 2020 8:55 AM

The Littlest Outlaw

by Anonymousreply 35October 3, 2020 8:56 AM

The Absent Minded Professor.

by Anonymousreply 36October 3, 2020 9:00 AM

I still love The Mystery In Dracula's Castle.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 37October 3, 2020 1:45 PM

Another vote each for Swiss Family Robinson, Pollyanna, The Parent Trap, and The Monkey's Uncle.

Also The Third Man On The Mountain and The Castaways.

by Anonymousreply 38October 3, 2020 2:26 PM

They had some great live action movies for kids. Black Arrow was another favorite of mine back then.

by Anonymousreply 39October 3, 2020 2:40 PM

These movies explain why the baby boomers turned out the way they did.

by Anonymousreply 40October 3, 2020 3:13 PM

They used to show The Love Bug at my elementary school during February vacation week.

I love Schlong of Norway.

by Anonymousreply 45October 3, 2020 5:51 PM

Disney had nothing to do with "Song of Norway."

by Anonymousreply 46October 3, 2020 6:25 PM

Follow Me, Boys!

by Anonymousreply 47October 3, 2020 9:03 PM

Old Yeller!

by Anonymousreply 48October 3, 2020 9:04 PM

And you have the audacity to post on DL.

by Anonymousreply 49October 3, 2020 9:09 PM

What about MOON PILOT?!?!

by Anonymousreply 50October 3, 2020 9:11 PM

Gay hottie Tom Tryon was in Moon Pilot

by Anonymousreply 51October 3, 2020 9:13 PM

It would be fun to watch [italic]The Happiest Millionaire[/italic] and that movie about the Detroit riots back to back.

by Anonymousreply 54October 4, 2020 4:26 AM

The original That Darn Cat and The Love Bug are my favorites!

by Anonymousreply 55October 4, 2020 4:28 AM

For a Sherman Brothers musical that is not and was never intended to be over 2 hours long, there's [italic]Summer Magic[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 56October 4, 2020 4:29 AM

The 3 Lives of Thomasina was very jarring to me as a child.

by Anonymousreply 57October 4, 2020 4:31 AM

R57: I thought it was the best of the films those two children made for the studio. The DVD is widescreen but there is no HD version anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 58October 4, 2020 4:35 AM

I also like "Johnny Tremaine".

by Anonymousreply 61October 4, 2020 5:01 AM

Choreography in ....ORIGINAL FAMILY BAND by Nancy Sinatra's husband!!!

I can't get into THAT DARN CAT because we don't see Dorothy Provine or Hayley Mills or Dean Jones for the first 10 minutes or so......just Ed Wynn and some other idiot doing stuff that doesn't matter to anyone....

by Anonymousreply 62October 4, 2020 2:19 PM

“Bedknobs” proved that Angela could carry a film which was the bullsh*t reason they gave for not giving her “Mame” and letting Lucy ruin it.

by Anonymousreply 63October 4, 2020 2:44 PM

I love The North Avenue Irregulars but k can’t find it anywhere!

The North Ave Irregulars is on Amazon Prime for purchase. I bought it this week.

by Anonymousreply 65October 4, 2020 4:26 PM

Napoleon and Samantha with Jodie Foster as a kindergarden little girl, Johny Whitaker, Michael Douglas as a happy-go-lucky unemployed drop-out protecting the kids and ... child abuser (???!!!) as the antagonist in a Disney film.

Wasn't it implied in Child of Glass too that the creepy uncle had done something to young Inez ? He killed her ? Commited incest ? Nothing explicit, obviously, but it was weird.

Swamp Fox.

by Anonymousreply 66October 4, 2020 4:53 PM

GUS, with Don Knotts and Gary Grimes !

by Anonymousreply 67October 4, 2020 4:55 PM

I loved In Search of the Castaways.

by Anonymousreply 68October 4, 2020 5:02 PM

Jesus Christ, OP, you're a glutton for punishment.

by Anonymousreply 69October 4, 2020 5:11 PM

Another vote for the ANNETTE serial - although episode eight is a complete waste of time with Mary Wickes just recounting the story so far.

And of course THE HARDY BOYS - with Tim & Tom.

by Anonymousreply 70October 4, 2020 5:54 PM

Was Sandy Duncan a serious contender for an oscar nomination for either Million Dollar Duck or Star Spangled Girl?

She received Golden Globe nominations for both.

by Anonymousreply 71October 4, 2020 5:57 PM

Has anyone mentioned that "The Gnome Mobile" is perhaps the finest production in the history of the cinematic arts?

by Anonymousreply 72October 4, 2020 6:01 PM

Son of Flubber

The Boatniks

by Anonymousreply 73October 4, 2020 6:08 PM

Escape to Witch Mountain was my favorite movie as a child.

by Anonymousreply 80October 4, 2020 9:03 PM

R80 same, loved it. watched it again recently. Has aged poorly, but Ike was still cute.

by Anonymousreply 81October 4, 2020 9:25 PM

In the 60s and early 70s The Alhambra Theatre showed the latest Disney stuff. A quarter (the Saturday matinee rate) got you all day at the movies. They gave out Love Bug peace sign medallions at the premiere. I wore mine for weeks and thought I was the coolest kid in kindergarten.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 82October 4, 2020 9:27 PM

Ike was adorable. I loved him shirtless and tied down in the sequel.

by Anonymousreply 83October 4, 2020 9:28 PM

R23 , was there ever a bigger scenery chewer in the history of cinema than Robert Newton?

R62, Blasphemy! The beginning of That Darn Cat features beloved DL icon Grayson Hall, aka Dr. Julia Hoffman of Dark Shadows.

R33, lots of shirtless scenes with MacArthur. It's a shame he didn't do as many when he was older, I like the mature MacArthur much better. (Same with Martin Milner).

by Anonymousreply 84October 5, 2020 1:27 AM

Inspired by OP, I watched Escape to Witch Mountain and the sequel with Bette Davis. For the mid-70s, the special effects were impressive.

I'm disappointed the vast Disney library isn't available on Disney+...

by Anonymousreply 85October 5, 2020 1:37 AM

I am impressed this has not turned into a Bedknobs and Broomsticks rage page.

Good work, men.

by Anonymousreply 86October 5, 2020 2:36 AM

what, no Apple Dumpling Gang?

by Anonymousreply 87October 5, 2020 3:03 AM

What about Pete's Dragon? R.I.P., Helen Reddy!

by Anonymousreply 88October 5, 2020 3:28 AM

Pollyanna, the Parent Trap, the Gnomemobile, the Love Bug for me.

Dean Jones was in my hometown in the 60s and I saw him shopping in the grocery store. He was a hottie. Everybody there was trying to keep their cool, but I knew if one person shouted "Dean Jones" there was going to be a stampede.

by Anonymousreply 89October 5, 2020 3:51 AM

[quote] “Bedknobs” proved that Angela could carry a film which was the bullsh*t reason they gave for not giving her “Mame” and letting Lucy ruin it.

WB already made up their minds by late 1971 when B&B came out.

At least [italic]Pete's Dragon[/italic] provided Onna White with a more dignified cinematic swan song and showed musicals weren't totally dead yet. Disney also cast John McGiver, who was in both LucyMAME and [italic]Manchurian Candidate[/italic], in [italic]The Apple Dumpling Gang[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 90October 5, 2020 3:55 AM

r87 You really couldn't be bothered to read 10 posts back?

by Anonymousreply 91October 5, 2020 3:59 AM

Walt Disney owned Annette's name......as a character. Unless she was working for WDP, they had to call her something else.....Dede or Annie were the most common choices.....
