Meh. Can't he direct a revisionist Brer Rabbit movie or something?

Does anyone want this?
Everyone forgets these days that THE LION KING was written and conceived by Disney Co. as a filler side-dish to their main mid-‘90s musical film adaptation of POCAHONTAS that had the superior script & score. People also forget that TLK has two shitty sequel films and a few awful tv series. It revived Disney financially, but that’s because kids don’t have any kind of eye or ear for quality and respond to cute talking animals.
Why, with this level of writing and critical acclaim, the TLK universe has still exploded into the juggernaut franchise it has while other better musical films by Disney languish in obscurity, I will never understand.

THE LION KING remains the star in Disney Theatricals' crown. The Bway show is a commercial juggernaut and an outstanding creative achievement, thanks in large part to director Julie Taymor and her design team. While it's far more entertaining than the movie, it helped cement the public perception that the movie is better than it actually is. (I agree with R2 about the script and score.)
Disney has never been able to duplicate the enormous stage success of TLK, mostly because most of their film-to-stage transfers are terrible. (FROZEN, I'm looking at you.) Shows like ALADDIN make money, but take no creative risks at all.

R2 Pocahontas wishes it were half as good as the Lion King!

Take this in the best way possible, r2: fuck you!

WHEN will humans stop appropriating the stories of animals?

Disney’s intention now is to scuttle its adaptation of its animated films to DisneyPlus, so who knows if the Jenkins movie will ever happen.

Didn’t even see the first film.

R4/R5 the legendary Howard Ashman did not contribute to TLK, was dead by the time the finished movie hit theatres. That should tell you all you need to know.
