Why Isn't Biden 20 Pts Ahead Of Trump?

Even if you go look at battleground swing states, Biden isn't 20 points ahead. Maybe the largest is 10 points ahead, or maybe even 5 points ahead

But Biden should be 20 points ahead of Trump across the board in all states

He isn't - and so why is isn't Biden 20 points ahead of Trump

Discuss.

by Anonymousreply 104October 6, 2020 6:49 PM

Nobody wants to know the answer to that. Just tell yourself something's wrong with the voters and content yourself with his lead in the polls.

by Anonymousreply 1September 29, 2020 2:11 AM

candidates are never twenty points ahead anymore

We have never had a President like Trump - what is the mystery for these "undecided" on how to vote. I mean this is a no brainer

by Anonymousreply 4September 29, 2020 2:14 AM

America is gonna be in for a huge surprise when the race gets called early. Like in 2016 everyone speculated it would go on for weeks. But we're beyond that already. Biden is gonna win

by Anonymousreply 5September 29, 2020 2:14 AM

I don’t understand it either. He’s a cheat, liar, incompetent, crook, morally corrupt...... this should be a blowout for Biden/Harris. What is wrong with America?

by Anonymousreply 6September 29, 2020 2:14 AM

Nixon beat McGovern by 23%, the worst popular vote beatdown in modern history. Reagan beat Mondale by 18%.

by Anonymousreply 7September 29, 2020 2:17 AM

R6, as several people I know have said, as long as he is appointing judges to overturn Roe v Wade, they don’t care what oh transgressions he has. They vote based on abortion no matter what else happens

by Anonymousreply 8September 29, 2020 2:18 AM

Republicans stick together no matter what , but a significant slice of Democrats tend to defect to Republican candidates based on culture issues. A lot these Bubba Democrats have now defected to be officially Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 13September 29, 2020 2:21 AM

Also, a lot of Independents are Republicans on the down low

by Anonymousreply 14September 29, 2020 2:22 AM

R6 he's all those things and as he's not the only one, the likeminded have found their fool king. He's demonstrated you can be your worst and 'succeed'. Nov 3 will show us whether we're truly outnumbered by those who embrace those values.

Biden doesn't need to be up by 20% in the polls to win. What would be nice is if voter turnout was 20% higher than last time.

by Anonymousreply 15September 29, 2020 2:22 AM

Because 30-40% of Americans are deplorables.

- Hillary

It will take decades to fix this mess. These people will lift Dump into a martyr cult status once he's out of the White House and is being prosecuted. Expect far right rallies, violence and terrorism for years to come. They got their messiah and democrats destroyed him.

by Anonymousreply 16September 29, 2020 2:23 AM

Republicans, especially the Trump kind are not subtle in voting for Trump. Biden - Hillary voters are professional and just do the job.

by Anonymousreply 18September 29, 2020 2:24 AM

The rest of the world is stunned at this OAP election, they should both be in care homes.

by Anonymousreply 19September 29, 2020 2:25 AM

Biden needs masses of young people to head to the polls - but because there is a lack of enthusiasm, they might stay at home. Falling back on what happened in 2016, thinking Trump will lose so what is the point?

Because young people are not taking this virus seriously, I question whether they will even show up at the polls, and Biden needs them.

Conservative voters will crawl on all fours to get to the polls, even if they are shot in both knees

by Anonymousreply 26September 29, 2020 2:49 AM

They have been programmed to think this way, even if they don’t recognize that this is exactly what is going on. Cult programming is so strong and effective, it can override human self preservation.Stupidity isn’t what motivates this. It’s pure rage and hatred being acted out in the most perfect and conveniently opportune manner possible: No masks. Not you. No opposition. Everyone must be like me to be ok. I am what an American is. Not you, un American. This what the Trump Cult responds to. Biden offers nothing to them.

Sadly, people have become addicted to drama, shade, fights, stunts and threats. Republicans have not only capitalized on this addiction, but probably encouraged it through media. They hired Trump to create daily distractions, and he has been on TV every day for 5 years.

Maybe "The Apprentice" was their pre-payment to him for running for POTUS (talk about money-laundering)? He apparently earned nearly $200 million doing the show.

by Anonymousreply 35September 29, 2020 6:28 PM

I have a lovely young PT. Today we got into a conversation about Trump. She agrees with her parents, Romanian immigrants, that Trump's morality doesn't matter. Her parents supposedly fled the USSR because they wanted to practice their religion. I told her Trump is immoral and would undercut religion if it got in his way, but I could see she just thought I was a stupid liberal. She's in her early twenties.

Shit.

by Anonymousreply 42September 29, 2020 9:58 PM

I'm in red flyover Kansas. The young here are fired up and want Trump out of office. The people who have contacted me re: voting for Biden have all been college aged. I remember how many college areas here had "safe places" on campus to mourn and discuss when Hillary lost. Just anecdotally but few Trump signs -and most of those are on the back of pickup trucks-next to the gun racks. If Trump is -god forbid-reelected, it will because he stole the election with help from Russia, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey etc.

For god sake , who would vote for this criminal just so he can stay out of prison for the next 4 years. Trump has no plan for the future-just staying out of the penitentiary.

by Anonymousreply 43September 29, 2020 10:06 PM

The problem with 2016 is that so many Democrats and liberals thought they had the luxury to sit out the election and express their disdain for an unlikable Hillary Clinton. I pray they are not so Foolish this year

by Anonymousreply 44September 29, 2020 10:09 PM

Too many people won't vote for a Democrat because of their record of socialism. Alexandria Ocasio is enough to make a person vote Republican for life. Her belief that the govt should provide an adequate standard of living for anyone who elects not to work says it all to me. I was saddened that Nancy Pelosi didn't read her the riot act on that one.

by Anonymousreply 45September 29, 2020 11:36 PM

"Too many people won't vote for a Democrat because of their record of socialism"

But if you're living in a tent, wouldn't Socialism be a step up?

by Anonymousreply 46September 30, 2020 12:39 AM

Most people don't live in tents, but I agree if I lived in a tent it would be a step up. I work very hard and live on a budget to hopefully never live in a tent. Most people I know don't live in a tent, thankfully.

by Anonymousreply 47September 30, 2020 1:18 AM

R45 If a government wants to increase the size of the economy (employment, indirect taxation etc) the easiest way is to increase social security benefits to the poorest people. They will spend the money rather than bank it. It isn't Socialism in any respect, it's hyper-capitalism. Margaret Thatcher, who was the most right-wing leader that The UK had in a hundred years oversaw the largest rise in benefit spending in the 20th century.

When the Conservative party gained power again in 2010 they increased pensions at a much faster rate via the 'Triple Lock'. They have also more than doubled the basic state pension in the past 10 years. If you are implementing a policy of Quantitative Easing (Printing Money) then give it to the poorest to distribute, it will be much more effective than any tax cut that you could make

Keeping people in poverty will never benefit your overall economy.

by Anonymousreply 48September 30, 2020 1:39 AM

[quote]so why is isn't Biden 20 points ahead of Trump

Because we live in two different realities. In their reality, Trump is doing a fantastic job, saved millions of lives, singlehandedly brought back the economy, is fighting for the "little guy" and is kicking the people they think deserve to be kicked.

[quote]Too many people won't vote for a Democrat because of their record of socialism.

And that's just bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 49September 30, 2020 1:43 AM

White people are fine with a financial hit if it continues to mean that will be at the top of the social ladder.

So, when people ask, why do poor people vote against their own financial interests—they don’t. They know they will stay above minorities, particularly blacks, if they keep voting for the GOP.

WaPo: Democratic voters who have requested mail ballots — and returned them — greatly outnumber Republicans so far in key battleground states, causing alarm among GOP party leaders and strategists that President Trump’s attacks on mail voting could be hurting the party’s prospects to retain the White House and the Senate this year.

The wide Democratic lead in mail voting so far has been the subject of urgent discussions among top GOP officials, according to people familiar with the conversations. The margins are “stunning” — and bad news for Republicans up and down the ballot, said longtime GOP pollster Whit Ayres.

I haven’t read the whole thread but isn’t the answer obvious?

Two prongs. First one is party. Conservative agitprop is allowed to be broadcast in this country as “news.” It’s turned a whole segment of this country into democrat-haters. They don’t care what a nose picking baboon their candidate is. At least he’s not a demoncrat.

Second one is race. White people feel increasingly set upon by liberals and progressives. There are racists for sure, but quite a few are just tired of race-guilt, and they’ve identified Trump as someone who’s not going to tell them they’re bad people because they’re white.

by Anonymousreply 56September 30, 2020 1:46 PM

Robert Costa said last night that some of his republican sources are now predicting a Goldwater-like defeat for Trump. And that some would even welcome that.

by Anonymousreply 57September 30, 2020 2:52 PM

This is the reckoning: the U.S. is not the country we may have thought it was. It has many more right-wingers who are fearful of minorities becoming the majority, fearful that they will lose their privilege, and will grab on to anybody -- no matter how corrupt, classless, and phony -- that they can.

by Anonymousreply 58September 30, 2020 2:56 PM

NEW: Democrats saw a fundraising boom during and following the wild #Debates2020. Fundraising site @actblue processed close to $8 million between 9:00 and 11:00 pm. Since the start of the debate until this morning, it saw at least $25 million.

by Anonymousreply 59September 30, 2020 3:48 PM

Agree, 30 to 40% of this country is deplorable which is why Trump is polling so high. By all rights, he should have already resigned.

Shame on the media who gave this clown legitimacy and shame on all of us for allowing him to get elected the first time.

On the bright side, I live in a red state and have barely seen any Trump signs or bumper stickers. I desperately hope some of the closet, moderate-leaning Repubs either abstain from voting or cross the line and vote Biden. If only for their economic interests alone. The right-wingers who mistakenly believe they are middle class (when they are one paycheck away from the streets) will still vote for Trump because they are too stupid to see the dire economic consequences should Trump remain in office.

[quote] Most here don't want to hear about that, preferring to shout "Boris! Boris!"

by Anonymousreply 63September 30, 2020 6:29 PM

Why isn’t he 40 pts ahead?

by Anonymousreply 64September 30, 2020 6:37 PM

trump throws everything around him into chaos. in that chaos he thrives and drives freaked out people to him

by Anonymousreply 65September 30, 2020 6:41 PM

There are a few reasons.

The US is incredibly politically polarized and Americans are sorting themselves increasingly along political lines to larger and larger degrees. This guarantees that both parties will get 40-45% of the vote no matter who the candidate is, even if one of those candidates is Trump.

Also, we are in ever tighter information bubbles. Republicans and Democrats don’t get our news and information from the same sources. 40 years ago, everyone read the same newspapers and watched the same three news networks. That isn’t so anymore.

So, there is no way any candidate is going to be 40 points ahead of any other candidate. It can’t happen in this environment and it has nothing to do with the candidates themselves.

A politician is supposed to go out and win votes, offer things for people to vote for, big improvements to the system and the society, have a plan for the future of the nation. Ideally, they can even be inspiring and exciting. They aren't entitled to your vote because they belong to a particular party. Biden is offering nothing and stands for nothing, he's a hollow man. He's lucky he's ahead. (And I'm a Democrat.)

by Anonymousreply 69September 30, 2020 7:12 PM

[quote]He isn't - and so why is isn't Biden 20 points ahead of Trump

Well, I guess if he doesn't win by AT LEAST 20 points, then he doesn't really have a mandate from the people, so we should just let cheeto stay in office, eh OP?

Idiot. From whose ass did you even pull the 20-point figure?

by Anonymousreply 70September 30, 2020 7:16 PM

Biden is not 20 points ahead because the polls usually poll "likely voters." Like with 2016, the vast majority of people are not going to vote. Of those that do vote, which skews older, they are more conservative and racist, so they still support Trump. Really though, the reason Trump will win again is the same reason Republicans win every time: voter suppression. That will be even easier this year than in years past.

Bull-fucking-shit he doesn't offer anything. Go douche with a fucking fire hose at full blast.

by Anonymousreply 82October 1, 2020 2:55 AM

We're a month out with SC, TX and AK within margin-of-error. R's are playing some serious defense here. What could save them might be either Biden having an "incident" during an interview or debate (stumbling more than any previous "bad" day) or going full-blown SJW to scare off suburbanites, which I don't see likely. It's his to lose for sure.

Incumbent needs to make up so much lost ground in the Blue Wall States, I don't see how he does it; if anything, it's going to get worse for him.

A friend told me that he's incredibly discouraged to the point of being frightened. When I pointed out that the polls for president and Congress are looking pretty good these days, he replied "Yeah, but that was true for Clinton, too." I maintain that her support in the fall was far softer than Biden's is now.

by Anonymousreply 83October 1, 2020 3:27 AM

Americans are totally removed from government. Makes it easier to get behind candidates who are idiots. Also, the news channels used to cover public policy. Is this tax cut a good idea? How should we handle the homeless? What is the best way to get the most people healthcare? You'd have experts debating this stuff. now its all Trump, on both liberal and conservative channels

Because Biden is a weak and uncompelling candidate who is only likely to become President at this late date because his opponent is so obviously a clinical narcissist borderline sociopath 12 year old dress up as a grown man.

In fact, the 2020 election is in some ways, or so it seems to a Brit looking in, to be mirroring what happened in 2016, only magnified many times: a less than compelling Democratic candidate with a good deal of baggage and manifestly unpopular amongst the working-class up against a staggeringly unqualified and ridiculous Republican one. In the latter instance, the less than compelling Dem candidate was good enough but not quite, won the popular vote, but lost the electoral college, and many people didn't realise just how bad Trump was.

This time, the Democrats are likely to have luck on their side: COVID has exposed the worst of Trump (what my sainted Mum would have called an ill wind that blew some good), and this time, despite a very weak candidate, the Democrats are likely to pull it off.

For what its worth, I've spoken before about many ties to friends in America in the Tri-State area: they report myriad Trump signs on lawns in upscale communities like Old Tappan, Harrington Park, Rivervale, Closter, and Westwood (NJ); Greenwich (CT); well-heeled Westchester suburbs; and towns in Rockland County. To be sure, they report plenty of Biden-Harris lawn signs, as well.

But the point is, these are not redneck flyover areas.

I am fairly convinced, not to say hopeful, that Biden will take it, so this terrible period of American politics can being recovery. But it won't mean, from what I can tell, that Americans are terribly enthused about Biden, only that another four years of Trump will be catastrophic for the nation.

And that is why Biden is not 20 points ahead of Trump everywhere.

r83 The polls were not so great for Clinton. Like everyone else, I'm terrified of another Trump win but Clinton's numbers were always stuck in the low to mid 40's. She went into her first Trump debate with a poll showing her leading 43-40.

I'm not sure anyone has ever stated anywhere the fact that baked into Hillary's low polling numbers was an assumption that undecideds wouldn't vote for Trump in large numbers. That they'd stay home or come to their senses. Instead, they showed up and voted for him 4-1 in swing states.

R97 - Because you think mentioning that fears re a Trump win might not be so foolish when looking at people openly supporting him in areas that aren't what you Americans call "flyover states"?

Here's a term from the British politics you seem to think have nothing to tell you: shy voters - you know, the kind of voter that wouldn't admit s/he was supporting BREXIT or the Tories.

Here's another: in politics, a week is a lifetime.

I'll let my numerous, and alarmed, American friends know that an expert on DL thinks that they are hallucinating those lawn signs in northeastern liberal blue states, or that they aren't cause for concern.

Trump is on track to lose. Let's move on and hope the AOC/Bernie/far left wing of the Dem party doesn't cause a Republican landslide in 2022 and a Republican President 2 years after that. America is a moderate country and it is time for the moderates of both parties to work together and get things moving.

No, because your "analysis" was kinda stupid, R99. In particular, this line, "In fact, the 2020 election is in some ways, or so it seems to a Brit looking in, to be mirroring what happened in 2016" was remarkably ignorant.

He’s 16 points ahead according to this poll. That’s close.
