Re-Watching The Thorn Birds on Amazon

Is it just me or does Rachel Ward totally suck?

It sounds like she's reading her lines off a cue card

by Anonymousreply 33Last Friday at 5:03 AM

Oh and Richard Chamberlain as a straight priest?

by Anonymousreply 1Last Wednesday at 2:40 PM

The gothic ranch filmed in California but set in Australia

by Anonymousreply 2Last Wednesday at 2:47 PM

Barbara Fucking Stanwyck

by Anonymousreply 3Last Wednesday at 2:49 PM

Yes, Rachel is awful. However, Bryan Brown was/is HOT.

by Anonymousreply 4Last Wednesday at 2:53 PM

Bryan Brown was good. And pretty much the only real Aussie in the cast!

by Anonymousreply 5Last Wednesday at 3:07 PM

Yes, awful.

by Anonymousreply 6Last Wednesday at 3:09 PM

The stars of that series, Richard Chamberlain as Father Ralph de Bricassart and Rachel Ward as Meggie, were adored by the viewing public. But not by the author.

'It was instant vomit!' she shrieks through a cloud of smoke. 'Ward couldn't act her way out of a paper bag and Chamberlain wandered about all wet and wide-eyed.

'The filming was done in Hawaii, there was only one kangaroo on set and everyone sounded American except Bryan Brown, whose Oz accent stuck out like a dingo's bits.'

by Anonymousreply 7Last Wednesday at 3:11 PM

Ah, but she's awfully easy on the eyes!

by Anonymousreply 8Last Wednesday at 3:11 PM

WEHT Philip Anglim?

by Anonymousreply 9Last Wednesday at 3:57 PM

Rachel Ward quit acting for many years because of the bad reviews she got for "Thorn Birds."

R10, that's kind of sad. She wasn't good in the Thorn Birds but she seems like a basically nice person

by Anonymousreply 12Last Wednesday at 4:32 PM

Chamberlain lived in Hawaii. Is that why it was shot there?

by Anonymousreply 13Last Wednesday at 4:39 PM

I thought he moved to Hawaii after they filmed there, but I might be wrong on that

I know he lived there with his partner for many years

by Anonymousreply 14Last Wednesday at 4:47 PM

I thought Rachel Ward quit acting because she met Bryan Brown during production, they married, and she moved to Australia and started having his babies.

by Anonymousreply 15Last Wednesday at 5:01 PM

They ALL suck. As does the story. I rooted for the wild boar to wipe them all out.

I love Barbara Stanwyck as an actress, but all I did watching this thing was wait for her dentures to fall out. And how the old dyke could pretend to lust after the middle-age gay guy was beyond me.

HORRIBLE show. But then most Australian or Australian-derived non-comedic works are.

by Anonymousreply 16Last Wednesday at 5:14 PM

A shirtless Bryan Brown wearing suspenders? I busted several loads gazing on that beautiful sight, hitting rewind on the VCR over and over.

by Anonymousreply 17Last Wednesday at 5:20 PM

Richard Chamberlain as a straight priest and Stanwyck as the old woman hot for him. Uh, huh.

Bette Davis (who wanted the Stanwyck role) had PLENTY to say about this, and she did not mince words about the gayess of it all!

by Anonymousreply 18Last Wednesday at 5:23 PM

Ward was better in the thriller Fortress.

Rachel was in Against All Odds with a VERY hot Jeff Bridges!

by Anonymousreply 20Last Wednesday at 6:29 PM

"Ashes of Roses"

by Anonymousreply 21Last Wednesday at 7:46 PM

"Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid"

I forgot Brett Cullen was in this. He was hot.

by Anonymousreply 23Last Wednesday at 8:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 24Last Thursday at 8:48 AM

Do you have any idea how revered and lusted upon Chamberlain was in that role ? Most middle aged women were fawning over the romantic figure and would never have suspected...

I remember.

by Anonymousreply 25Last Thursday at 8:57 AM

Richard was hotter in Shogun.

by Anonymousreply 26Last Thursday at 9:00 AM

I visited New York just after this had screened on TV and when the cabbie learned I was an Aussie he told me he had just watched "The Thunderbirds".

by Anonymousreply 27Last Thursday at 9:06 AM

Really, R25? All I heard at work was how can a gay guy like that kiss a woman, he's gay! Even my mother had a laugh over it.

by Anonymousreply 28Last Thursday at 6:09 PM

I don't remember any women thinking he was gay (including my mom and my sister)

by Anonymousreply 29Last Thursday at 6:32 PM

Philip Anglim was horribly miscast as Dane. Dane was supposed to be stunningly handsome and strikingly similar to his father. Anglim was a stuttering mess. I have always thought Peter Bergman would have been a much better choice, if he had even been considered.

by Anonymousreply 30Last Thursday at 6:41 PM

I thought Anglim was handsome, though different strokes for different folks, I guess

Btw, didn't someone here claim to have had sex with him back in the day?

by Anonymousreply 31Last Thursday at 6:44 PM

This was the first "grown up book" I read and I damn near devoured it in two days.

I thought it was the hottest thing on the planet.

by Anonymousreply 32Last Thursday at 6:48 PM

Where do you live, R29? It may be a New York thing, ha.
