Who thinks anything Trump does is a good idea? But that just goes to show that nobody can control him. He keeps making these absolutely terrible decisions, like the Corona virus press briefings. He came off terribly in every single one of them, but he couldn't help himself.
6 million is the official number of people who've had coronavirus in the US, but estimates are more like 30 to 40 million because we aren't doing adequate testing. Getting to herd immunity would likely mean hundreds of thousands more deaths.

Of course he meant herd immunity. The fact that he meant that but referred to it as herd mentality shows that he’s an idiot.
It also shows he’s still trying to minimize a virus that’s killed four times as many Americans in six months as died in Vietnam in ten years. Despite the fact that he’s also going around saying that he “up-plays” the virus instead of downplaying it. Which is what he’s on tape saying, for the record, to a veteran political journalist.
There, just another day in Trump World.

To expand on R73, the smallpox vaccine created herd immunity for smallpox. Before the vaccine existed, a lot of people that got smallpox died, and the ones that survived weren’t enough immune people to stop new people from getting smallpox. It was never enough to do that, for centuries. And you could only get smallpox once and then you were immune. Covid natural immunity seems to be pretty short. So achieving herd immunity for Covid, which is extremely contagious, isn’t going to happen either.
If a Covid vaccine doesn’t get distributed enough to create herd immunity, my guess is it will be like smallpox, just go on forever in waves. Unless people learn to wear masks and stay home as a semi-permanent lifestyle that lasts for years.
When the polio vaccine first came out, people were in a rush to get everyone vaccinated and schoolchildren had to have it or they couldn’t be admitted to school. There were mass vaccinations. A few people had bad reactions and got sick or even died. But in those days, people put the community first and understood it had to be done for the greater good, risk or not.
People don’t understand that now. Wait until a few kids have a bad reaction to the Covid vaccine, and you’ll have parents that refuse to vaccinate their kids fucking it up for everyone.

by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 17, 2020 3:19 AM |
I had my flu shot a couple of days ago and I said to the nurse, I heard these are only good for six months. He agreed. He said, this will get you through to March so you’ll be covered.
If Covid shots are only good for six months, you might have to take one in fall and spring. That means a huge ramp up of production. Billions of shots every fall and spring.
Biden said today that one of the shots being proposed had to be stored at minus 70 degrees. He said they could only produce them en masse in huge numbers of doses, and since they’re hard to store, you wouldn’t be getting them at Walgreens. Maybe you would have to get them at a hospital. More delays.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | September 17, 2020 5:51 AM |

There can be no herd immunity for coronavirus for the same reason there is no herd immunity with the flu or the common cold of which coronavirus is related. The antibodies are not lifelong. They dissipate to nothing after some months. Moreover should a vaccine be able to circumvent these problems (Probably second or third generation) think of all the people who will die under "herd immunity" before they had a chance to get that vaccine.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | September 17, 2020 2:46 PM |

Those would be the people who are going to die anyway since there is currently no vaccine. No extra people are required to die as we progress to herd immunity.

R87, that's not true. The current medical advise is to avoid getting COVID-19 by wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, etc. Obviously, if you do not get COVID-19, it can't kill you. Herd immunity, as advocated by the Trump administration, means that everyone who possibly can should get the virus, and therefore no one should wear a mask or take other precautions. That means that, inevitably, more people will become sick, the healthcare system will be swamped, and more people will die.

R81, because flu season is mostly October to March. I got mine early because this year is unusual and I was concerned they might run out early. Last year I got my flu shot late - January. They were out then and I had to go someplace else. Also, I got the MMR shot in May. Right about that time there was some news that it might help people fight off Covid, and they were out. They had to order it for me, and I had to go in early because a lot of people wanted it. I never had it as a child, so I needed it anyway. I’ve been trying to get as many vaccinations as I can.
FYI, if you get the MMR, it interacts with Prednisone and lowers your immune system. The two medications should be taken at least a month apart. If you take prednisone, don’t get the MMR if you can avoid it. I practically had to wear a space suit every time I went out for a couple of months until I was over the prednisone. I didn’t know the prednisone was coming up or I never would have done that.

Olivia Troye, who worked as homeland security, counterterrorism and coronavirus adviser to Vice President Pence for two years, said that the administration’s COVID-19 response cost lives and that she will vote for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden this fall because of her experience in the Trump White House.
President Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic showed a “flat out disregard for human life” because his “main concern was the economy and his reelection,” she said in an interview.

A current senior administration official is also part of the group, but Taylor declined to share that person's name.

To take a turn poking the beast at this juncture takes shows bravery than someone like Will Hurd who quietly backed away a year ago and has yet to bother to do anything to save the Republic even though he certainly must know where some of the bodies are buried.
