Was “Tell It To My Heart” Taylor Dayne’s best song?
I know “Love Will Lead You Back” was her biggest song and her only number 1, but it doesn’t have the replay value or life that Tell It To My Heart does. This song never died and never will. It still gets airplay.
I love this song. So much fun. So much energy. It makes you wanna move.

R2 because she never produced another hit after her 1990 album.
Her next album was in 1993 and the singles placed at 20, 50, and 103.
After that none of her singles ever charged again.

“With Every Beat of My Heart” was a pretty great song. The video was odd because it tried to make Taylor look very black and white glam - with her face seen only fleetingly and shot in very soft focus from a block away. It seemed like she was trying to appear almost Madonna like, but it didn’t work so well. Bet Taylor gets the last laugh now.

Her music epitomized late 80s/early 90s easy listening "Lite FM" secretary music. That genre was so popular at the time and it was so bland and boring. Gloria Estefan and Jon Secada were a couple of others in that genre.

It took a while between the release of her second and third albums. By the time the 3rd album came out the dance/pop market had pretty much died. I had a friend back then who attended a show she did in 1993 or so on a Tuesday night at the Nectarine Ballroom in Ann Arbor (Tuesday was the lightly attended gay night there). He reported she looked dismayed at the small turnout and only did a couple of songs, ending with "I'll be Your Shelter" which she grudgingly introduced with "Anyone want to hear "Shelter"?" to no response.

Clive Davis wrote in his memoir that she wanted to write her own songs but he flat out told her that she wasn't a good songwriter. She insisted that her next album have her own songs on it, so he grudgingly let her do it and the album bombed. That was the end of her career.

From Clive Davis:
[quote]Taylor Dayne: another failed auteur. “Taylor fell victim to her ambition to be a songwriter.” Many years later, “she wrote me a long letter, saying how deeply she regretted not listening to me years ago,” but he felt sad, knowing that “too much time, too many years had elapsed for Top 40 to be a realistic goal.”

I've heard the Clive Davis argument about her songwriting being the cause of her cooling off and it's bullshit. The lead off single was C&C Music Factory update of CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR LOVE BABE. Which was great and probably very very expensive for Arista. Only reached #20 in the U.S. despite being played on VH1 a lot. Album peaked at 51 in the U.S. That's a flop out of the gate.
The third album also included TWO Dianne Warren songs (who had written Love will Lead You Back). And another song called SEND ME A LOVER that sounds like a surefire adult contemporary hit to me, even though it wasn't. Celine Dion went on to do a cover (or did it first, not sure). The other songs are Taylor Dayne co-written but there were still four expensive songs she didn't write that didn't make a dent. There is also a Jim Steinman song Original Sin that was either bumped from the album or was just part of The Shadow soundtrack from the same year. (Not one of his best).
Kind of like Cyndi Lauper and Paula Abdul, there was just zero interest in that third album after smash hit 1st and 2nd albums that had long runs on the chart. If there had been interest, it would have sold some copies for a few weeks supported by the leadoff single and then faded away.

The music business had changed dramatically by '93. Most 80s artists couldn't get play in the early 90s after grunge and hip hop took over. Only the really big A list acts like Madonna and Whitney were able to make the transition from the 80s to the 90s.

Taylor Dayne and Expose had almost identical careers. Debut album had 4 top 10 hits. 2nd album had 3 top10 hits and 1 top 20 hit. Three year gap before third album, which flopped. First single was top 20 for Taylor, top 30 for Expose. Expose fared a little better six months later with the second single, which oddly was the b-side to the first single. Both released greatest hit albums two years later. Both on Arista's label.

R19, Clive Davis also elaborated that she wrote him a letter after she left Arista suggesting that they make music his way again. He realized that the ship had sailed & declined. Her ego bit the hand that fed her--fed her very well. Since leaving Davis, his guidance & Arista her career has remained on the state fair & pride event circuit. She's been lucky to get a few club hits, but nothing has ever matched the pop altitude she had when her material was being chosen & produced for her. I really think we'd be thinking about Taylor Dayne much differently now if she had played the game for a few more years by letting the hit making machine that made her keep doing so until she had enough clout to afford a few failed personal projects. Silly girl.

Yeah, Taylor Dayne was not too smart. She should've listened to Clive and trusted his judgement, it probably would've given her a few more years of hits and a pile of $$$.
As crazy and drug fucked as Whitney was, she was aware enough to know that Clive was excellent at choosing the right material to record. She never rebelled against it.

Clive Davis was a genius at picking material that was perfect for the artists on his roster. Amazing how so many of them fought back against it. The ones who calmed down, listened to Clive and recorded the songs he picked for them got big hits that were very complimentary to the particular artists' strengths.

i think i replied to r19 before but thats a great example of someone like Clive Davis rewriting history and not even making sense. The lead single was this cover and C&C music factory produced it. She sounds great. She looked good. It still barely hit the top 20 and then disappeared. Her insisting on writing some songs on the album had nothing to do why this or the diane warren songs weren't played on the radio or VH1
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 78 | June 16, 2021 4:11 AM

r77 then explain why the video above failed to reach the top 10. Clive Davis must have paid a shit ton of money for C&C music factory to produce the song and the video isn't cheaply done either. They expected the album to be a hit. It wasn't.
This was the 2nd single off the album and its hits the same elements of LOVE WILL LEAD YOU BACK....It's good. Not a hit. She didn't write it either. (It was also recorded by Celine Dion around the same time but wasn't released....its on youtube, the lyrics are different but same chorus).

This may be hard to believe, but “the States” is just one country and people around the rest of the world listen to music too. Anastacia had multiple hits all across Europe during her heyday and could fill up arenas on her own. Taylor was always only an opening act or did little club tours.
