Fright Night the 1985 Vampire movie. What do we think about it?

It was the first movie I watched unsupervised on video in my younger years. My earlier videos were supervised viewing with my parents eg The Golden Child. I picked out Fright Night with my birthday money from a discount store in 1989. It wasn't what I expected but I absolutely loved it , the music, the visuals , the atmospherics and especially Chris Sarandon who I must confess I found very sexy especially when he bit the female character whilst seducing her.šŸ˜˜šŸ”„ How big a splash did it make when released in 1985?

Has it aged well? Did you enjoy it?

What was it's box office? Who did you see it with? How much did it cost? Is it a good movie? Why did you pick it to see? What about the poster, was it good? Can I see it anywhere today? Would you watch it again? How many times? Would you pay to see it again? Do you like scary movies? Are scary movies a good thing? Do you think I should have bought a different 4 year old movie and if so which one?

by Anonymousreply 1August 14, 2020 6:18 AM

Fright Night is a classic. Fantastic film. Terrific blend of comedy and horror. Still holds up. Every actor is perfectly cast.

Chris Sarandon was the right choice for the vampire. Both sexy and intimidating. I would have totally succumbed to him. And he rocked a sweater in a dance club.

Roddy McDowell was terrific.

One thing about the '80s I loved was films about late night cable television - U.H.F., Elvira Mistress of the Dark and Fright Night. Wayne's World also explored it in the '90s, but I prefer the '80s films; much more fun.

I don't mind the 2011 remake. Colin Farrell was perfectly cast. But I didn't like that the vampire hunter was changed from a late night host to a magician.

by Anonymousreply 2August 14, 2020 6:21 AM

r1 I watched it alone I have bought it on dvd so effectively paid to see it again.

I didn't find it to be very scary. The music was phenomenal.

by Anonymousreply 3August 14, 2020 6:22 AM

r2 Oh I could never watch a remake! Its Chris Sarandon eternally for me in this role! You sound as enthusiastic a fan of the film as me! Would it be classed as a cult hit?

by Anonymousreply 4August 14, 2020 6:25 AM

Honestly, r4, I think it has reached a status beyond a cult hit. I just call it a "classic".

Like Elvira Mistress of the Dark and Vamp, which I consider to be cult hits, I consider and rank Fright Night higher than those films because I think it gets a little more respect and love, but just my opinion (also, I think it's better known). But I love all three.

I love '80s horror!

by Anonymousreply 5August 14, 2020 6:32 AM

r5 I dare say that you are right! Classic seems more accurate.

I have never seen the sequel though. Have you?

Nightmare on Elm street films started in the 1980s I am also a fan of .But Fright Night was special and frankly sexy too.šŸ˜˜

by Anonymousreply 6August 14, 2020 6:44 AM

I saw the sequel way back in the late '80s. It was okay but I didn't think it was good as the first.

However it seems to get a lot of love online from horror fans. The main reason being that they want a North American release on Blu-Ray.

by Anonymousreply 7August 14, 2020 6:53 AM

Ok thanks r7! Was Roddy and Chris both in the sequel?

by Anonymousreply 8August 14, 2020 7:02 AM

Chris Sarandon was masterful and intense. I found him hot in this role.

by Anonymousreply 9August 14, 2020 7:05 AM

Roddy does, Chris doesnā€™t, R8. Director Tom Holland didnā€™t return either, which is a great shame. Part II could have been a much better film with him. It still has its charms, though, and I recommend seeing it at least once. I still adore the original, although I would have cast somebody other than Amanda Bearse as Amy. I have the soundtrack on vinyl and one of my hard drives.

by Anonymousreply 10August 14, 2020 7:37 AM

Intense is a very apt description r10

by Anonymousreply 11August 14, 2020 7:38 AM

The Eureka Blu-ray is worth getting. Lots of special features. Great looking transfer.

by Anonymousreply 12August 14, 2020 7:45 AM

I liked the cast, particularly the guy playing the lead (dorky but sweet and totally believable as your average nerd next door) and the one playing Evil Ed. There was also a male friend of the vampire who seemed a lot more than a friend. And Evil Ed's brief nude scene, although nowhere near as eye-popping as the dude in American Werewolf in London, was an unexpected treat for a baby gayling. Roddy was fun and cute and the effects were surprisingly gruesome.

by Anonymousreply 13August 14, 2020 8:14 AM

I thought Amanda Bearse was genius casting myself - she was so spunkily sexless at first that her transformation into an unhinged femme fatale was truly unnerving. And she matched up well with the male lead - you could see them hitting it off.

If they'd gone with someone more conventionally teen-movie the character would have been a lot less interesting as written.

by Anonymousreply 14August 14, 2020 8:17 AM

^I knew somebody was gonna come along and say this. Itā€™s not that a more ā€œconventionallyā€ teen-movie type was needed. It just needed to be someone more believable in the role. For starters, Bearse was 27 in 1985 and looked/sounded every bit of it. I also donā€™t think she and Ragsdale matched well at all. I can see what they were going for with her casting; I just donā€™t think they achieved it.

by Anonymousreply 15August 14, 2020 9:38 AM

Is everyone agreed that Chris Sarandon was perfectly cast?

by Anonymousreply 16August 14, 2020 9:45 AM

I love this movie and couldn't believe i'd never heard of it before. Chris Sarandon is excellent as Jerry Dandrige. And i don't mind part 2, but the remake was shit.

by Anonymousreply 17August 14, 2020 11:47 AM

When did you first watch it r17?

by Anonymousreply 18August 14, 2020 12:28 PM

I loved it - and the music was great.

by Anonymousreply 19August 14, 2020 12:29 PM

I also thought Stephen Geoffreys was so cute - yet annoying - in that movie. His porn career afterward was underwhelming.

by Anonymousreply 20August 14, 2020 12:35 PM

Apparently not that long ago there was talk and planning for a Fright Night 3 involving the original director Tom Holland.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 21August 14, 2020 12:38 PM

It was not a huge hit when it came out. I donā€™t remember it at all at the time. I remember seeing the box at the video store later but didnā€™t think of it much. I think it started to get popular when it was on basic cable like USA Night Flight or something.

Itā€™s a great movie. I thought Stepehen Geoffreys was one of the best parts and then learning he did gay porn later is just bizarre to think about.

But short answer is: not huge at the time, found its following after on video and cable.

by Anonymousreply 22August 14, 2020 12:43 PM

R18 2005

by Anonymousreply 23August 14, 2020 2:11 PM

I wonder if having the original director involved will make Fright Night 3 as good a film as the original if it comes to fruition?

by Anonymousreply 24August 14, 2020 3:45 PM

r23 Was it on DVD? Lots of extras on it?

by Anonymousreply 25August 15, 2020 9:50 PM

In the early 80s my sis and I would get high as fuck and see whatever horror movie was out that week.

by Anonymousreply 26August 15, 2020 9:58 PM

[Quote] His porn career afterward was underwhelming.

But he LOVED getting his ass fucked though. I have a few of his porn.

by Anonymousreply 27August 15, 2020 10:05 PM

r26 Which ones did you enjoy?Night of the living dead?Hellraiser?Nightmare on Elm Street?

by Anonymousreply 28August 15, 2020 10:11 PM

Chris Sarandon was perfectly cast.

by Anonymousreply 29August 15, 2020 10:15 PM

All I remember is the opening scene. An outdoors concert? A massively muscular saxophone player. Hot AF. The rest of the movie? Meh.

by Anonymousreply 30August 15, 2020 10:19 PM

All of them! Sunday afternoon way to get out of the house. Motel Hell and Happy Birthday to Me hold a special place in my heart.

by Anonymousreply 31August 15, 2020 10:22 PM

Indeed r29 A Naughty sexiness!

by Anonymousreply 32August 15, 2020 10:22 PM

R30 here, Disregard my post. That scene was in another mid 1980's teen vampire movie The Lost Boys.

by Anonymousreply 33August 15, 2020 10:31 PM

I loved the original but the whole Amy being(or maybe being)the reincarnation of Sarandon's true love subplot being completely dropped and him turning Amy into just another servant was strange.

by Anonymousreply 34August 15, 2020 10:37 PM

The 80s were not a great decade for movies, and the reverence shown to this middling horror flick shows that.

by Anonymousreply 35August 15, 2020 10:42 PM

This was a great flick and the guy who played Evil Ed later became a gay porn star canā€™t remember the name

by Anonymousreply 36August 15, 2020 10:55 PM

It's one of my favorite horror movies. I found Jonathan Stark sexy in the movie.

Hated the Colin Farrell version.

by Anonymousreply 37August 15, 2020 10:55 PM

r37 I genuinely don't think in this instance originally can be bettered.

by Anonymousreply 39August 15, 2020 11:17 PM

I love this movie. I was a kid in the 80s, so part of my love for it is probably nostalgia, but it's also just a fun, well-done movie.

by Anonymousreply 40August 15, 2020 11:18 PM

Love this movie and always have. As someone has already mentioned, itā€™s a perfect blend of horror and comedy.

by Anonymousreply 41August 15, 2020 11:28 PM

Actually, as a big fan of this movie, I do think r34 brings up an excellent point. There was much made about Amy being a reincarnation (?) of Sarandon's true love and, yes, it was dropped or they didn't explore it any further.

It gave more weight to why Charley was more determined to kill Jerry.

by Anonymousreply 42August 15, 2020 11:49 PM

Itā€™s tremendous.

So is the remake.

by Anonymousreply 43August 16, 2020 12:37 AM

Curious to see if the Fright Night 3 project comes off.

by Anonymousreply 44August 16, 2020 3:42 AM

R25 no, I was just happened to catch it on tv. But I did end up buying the dvd. I don't think it had any special features though.

by Anonymousreply 45August 16, 2020 4:47 AM

I am a major horror fan who doesn't typically love vampire/monster movies, but "Fright Night" is one of the exceptions for me. It's atmospheric, darkly funny, suspenseful, and really just well done from beginning to end. Chris Sarandon was gorgeous in it.

by Anonymousreply 46August 16, 2020 4:53 AM

I EAT DOG SHIT I FIND IN THE STREET!

by Anonymousreply 47August 16, 2020 4:57 AM

Yes, even DRACULA is lame to me.

But I do make exceptions for a few vampire movies that manage not to ā€œsuck.ā€

I like FRIGHT NIGHT, LOST BOYS, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, 1,000 DAYS OF NIGHT, FROM DUSK TIL DAWN, THE HUNGER and that Netflix DRACULA last year.

by Anonymousreply 48August 16, 2020 5:01 AM

R48 what about Near Dark??

by Anonymousreply 49August 16, 2020 5:30 AM

r45 Thank you. Great serendipity that you happened to stumble across such a great movie.

by Anonymousreply 50August 16, 2020 5:30 AM

Fantastic movie ! So much fun to watch in a theater , and of course Chris made al the little gaylings mussy's wet . I enjoy it on tv but Im glad I saw it when it came out on the big screen. It really takes it up another level.

by Anonymousreply 51August 16, 2020 5:41 AM

I havenā€™t seen the original since I was a boy, but I do remember Sarandon being shirtless and making my Spidey Sense tingle.

by Anonymousreply 52August 16, 2020 5:55 AM

During the '90s, the guy who played Evil Ed went on to do a lot of gay porn as "Sam Ritter."

Not very attractive, but he often made up for it in enthusiasm.

by Anonymousreply 53August 16, 2020 6:03 AM

Evil Ed went on to make gay porn? Wow.

by Anonymousreply 54August 16, 2020 7:00 AM

Yeah, the actor who played Evil Ed - Stephen Geoffreys -what a strange turn of events.

He was a Tony nominated actor and a good actor who appeared in this film, Heaven Help Us and At Close Range. And then, for whatever reason, in the '90s, he started doing porn. Maybe the roles dried up, drugs, who knows.

by Anonymousreply 55August 16, 2020 8:03 AM

I'm no prude, but I feel bad he ended up in porn. From Fright Night to porn there is an ocean in between.

by Anonymousreply 56August 16, 2020 6:39 PM

Most of the comments are from the same few people repeating themselves.

by Anonymousreply 57August 16, 2020 6:41 PM

Itā€™s fine. As a kid I found it scary, but a lot of fun as an adult. I actually liked the sequel a lot and found it more fun.

The black drag looking vampire on roller skates used to scare me as a kid and me and my sisters would call them Tina Turner wannabe.

by Anonymousreply 58August 16, 2020 6:43 PM

$24.9 million. Alone. Nothing (I downloaded it off the internet). Yes. Because of its cult classic status. It was actually better than the movie itself. Yes. Yes. At least once. No, because I didn't pay anything the first time either. Yes. Definitely. Yes (Toni Erdmann).

by Anonymousreply 59August 16, 2020 6:45 PM

Love both the original and the sequel with gorgeous Julie Carmen as the main villain. The trivia page of the sequel on IMDB features details of how careful and yet respectful the production was dealing with one of the actors being HIV.

There was supposed to be a third one, but the death of producer JosƩ MenƩndez, murdered by his sons, put a stop to that.

[quote] Soon after the filming was wrapped up, Roddy McDowall and Fright Night creator Tom Holland were scheduled to meet with Live Entertainment chairman Jose Menendez to discuss making a third film, but plans died with Menendez, who was infamously murdered by his sons. As a direct consequence of this horrific tragedy, Part 2 ended up losing it's planned country-wide distribution and playing only in one LA and another NY theater, which directly resulted in its poor box office results (even though its per theater results were pretty good) and being released almost straight to video. Since all of the movie's planned promos and ads were canceled as well, most people never even learned of the movie's existence until eventually noticing it at their local video store.

[quote] Roddy McDowall and director Tommy Lee Wallace had an unpleasant lunch with Live Entertainment chairman Jose Menendez to discuss the film's distribution and marketing, and later the same evening the exec was slaughtered by his sons, Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez. As news of the murders swirled around Hollywood the next morning, McDowall phoned Wallace and cracked, "Well, I didn't do it. Did you?"

Just so you guys know, the swole saxophonist from THE LOST BOYS is Timmy Cappello and he was much more famous for being Tina Turner's boytoy on sax.

Director Joel Schumacher is gay, so he probably saw Cappello during a Tina Turner performance and became instantly dickmatized.

I watched Fright Night in the theater and there were so many gasps when Chris Sarandon showed up in Charlie's house, sitting there chatting with his mother. He was so gorgeous. And yes, the nightclub scene prompted me to go see it again in the theater. Roddy McDowell was brilliant. I just love Fright Night.

by Anonymousreply 72August 16, 2020 8:42 PM

by Anonymousreply 78August 16, 2020 9:23 PM

R76 yeah but itā€™s weird when someone posts ā€œI loved this movieā€ and then a couple of posts later ā€œBest movie!ā€ And then again and so on and so on

Itā€™s not like there has been much discussion. Itā€™s just a bunch of repetitive comments from the same few posters.

by Anonymousreply 79August 16, 2020 9:39 PM

Jesus, let the person enjoy Fright Night. Who cares if he is repeating himself? It is a great movie and it's a beloved classic in the horror film community.

And I don't think r72's story is far-fetched. I'm sure audiences gasped or got a fright when he showed up at Charlie's house. Because, by then, we the audience knew Jerry was a vampire.

by Anonymousreply 80August 17, 2020 12:16 AM

No one gasps at someoneā€™s beauty in a film, yet alone everyone in a theater. Please

by Anonymousreply 81August 17, 2020 12:37 AM

I grew up with this movie. Love every minute of it. Was fortunate enough to meet most of the main cast several years ago except Amanda Bearse and Jonathan Stark (they weren't at the convention I attended) and, of course, Roddy. Definitely up there with The Lost Boys as one of the greatest vampire flicks of the '80s.

by Anonymousreply 82August 17, 2020 12:40 AM

Contrarians abound on DL. Nothing new. They can't stand seeing people enjoying their lives. It's every thread not only this one.

They hate their lives and attack.

by Anonymousreply 83August 17, 2020 12:45 AM

Enjoy yourselves without lying.

by Anonymousreply 84August 17, 2020 12:48 AM

I think I prefer Fright Night to The Lost Boys. Lost Boys is still entertaining but it was kind of choppy in its editing and looking at the deleted scenes, some of them could have been placed back in to give a bit more back story.

by Anonymousreply 85August 17, 2020 1:06 AM

r83 I'm sure you are much more intelligent than Prince Harry!!

by Anonymousreply 86August 17, 2020 1:21 AM

I used to IDOLIZE Stephen Geoffreys as a kid, so when I got to meet him at a Con several years ago, it was really a treat. According to him, he had to choose between FN 2 and 976-EVIL, and he ended up taking the lead role in the latter because it gave him a chance to work with Robert Englund. Plus, he also thought the script to FN 2 sucked. Right before FRIGHT NIGHT, he and Amanda starred in the 80s teen sex comedy FRATERNITY VACATION, which was also one of my faves growing up. It had a rockin' soundtrack that included several Bananarama songs and co-starred a pre-famous Tim Robbins. Brad Fiedel did the score and he, too, would go right from this film to work on FRIGHT NIGHT.

by Anonymousreply 91August 17, 2020 3:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 92August 17, 2020 3:05 AM

The black cross dressing vampire was named "Belle". He/She was played by choreographer Russell Clarke, who had choreographed many films including Xanadu, Teen Witch, Earth Girls are Easy, Two Moon Junction, Vamp and Fright Night 2. Clark also worked with the likes of David Bowie, Grace Jones, Gloria Estefan and Pat Benatar on various music videos. Sadly, he died in 2002.

Fright Night and Lost Boys are my favorite vampire movies. Both filled with so much hot guys and tons of homoeroticism. I am pretty sure Jerry and Billy in Fright Night were a gay couple.

by Anonymousreply 101August 17, 2020 5:02 AM

The remake with Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin was pretty good too. Just as sexy. Chris Sarandon and Colin Farrell can both get it.

by Anonymousreply 102August 17, 2020 5:30 AM

r101 Please elaborate on what you found most homoerotic in these films! There are a number of blogs online debating gay subjects to Fright Night so you could well be fight about them being a couple.

by Anonymousreply 103August 17, 2020 5:40 AM

[Quote] The remake with Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin was pretty good too.

Colin was fine, but they just got too carried away. Why the hell would a vampire (who's supposed to be laying low) blow up a house?!

by Anonymousreply 104August 17, 2020 5:44 AM

R103 In Fright Night, the main Charley's mother makes a snide remark that the handsome new neighbor must be gay. Then the film shows Jerry and his manservant act very affectionate with each other. Jerry is a vampire that preys on humans but his manservant Billy is the only one he doesn't harm and is very loyal to him. They just seemed like lovers to me. Also then Charley's best friend Evil Ed. I didn't even know the actor was gay at time but his character seemed very campy and gay in his mannerisms and seems to be a bit flirty with Charley.

Lost Boys had that whole leather and chains clothing and close male companionship thing. Again, the body language and David the lead vampire seems to be seducing Michael. Joel Schumacher directed this so that could have been intentional.

by Anonymousreply 105August 17, 2020 5:52 AM

r105

Indeed so would you say Jerry had a sexuality as a vampire and would you say he was meant to be interpreted as bisexual or even gay?

by Anonymousreply 106August 17, 2020 6:02 AM

R106 I think he's bisexual. Because he seemed to be seducing Charley's girlfriend Amy and notes that she resembled a past female lover of his. I don't know if his bisexuality is from being a vampire or if he was just a bi man that just happened to be a vampire.

by Anonymousreply 107August 17, 2020 6:20 AM

I jerked off to a fantasy of Jerry getting sucked and fucked by Billy.

Great movie!

by Anonymousreply 108August 17, 2020 6:31 AM

The remake was HORRID.

by Anonymousreply 109August 17, 2020 7:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 110August 18, 2020 9:09 AM

Zombie, I guess too.

There's a scene from the film that I used to rewind and watch over and over. It's at the disco when Chris Sarandon enthralls Amanda Bearse. He takes her out on the dance floor, and there's a shot of his butt swaying to the music. Really sexy...I rewinded and replayed that scene so many times, I must have worn out the VHS tape.

by Anonymousreply 112August 18, 2020 9:19 AM

Her hair becomes moussed while dancing. lol

Then grows after bitten.

by Anonymousreply 113August 18, 2020 9:23 AM

R112, you mean when he runs her hand over one of his butt cheeks? Yeah, that was hot.

by Anonymousreply 114August 18, 2020 9:25 AM

Yup, R114. Right at the beginning of this clip:

r112 I wore out the videotape on the come to me scene were Chris Sarandon comes down the stairs half naked and seduces Amy who is on the carpet looking nervous but very sexually excited!šŸ”„šŸ˜

Does Stephen Geoffreys ever talk about his brief porn career?

by Anonymousreply 117August 18, 2020 6:48 PM

He mentioned it briefly in an article many years ago, and I think he was asked about it during a fan Q&A once. Here's a link to the article. It's very brief in one of the last paragraphs on the right.

by Anonymousreply 118August 18, 2020 8:14 PM

Yeah, I can't find any in-depth interviews of him discussing his porn career. Maybe he feels it's nobody's business or he doesn't like talking about it.

by Anonymousreply 119August 18, 2020 8:34 PM

Could someone add links to Stephen/Sam's videos I've tried porn hub and their search engine is garbage every search somehow brings up twinks.lol

^See R94.

by Anonymousreply 121August 22, 2020 3:31 PM

He has a nice body but the voice kinda ruins it.

by Anonymousreply 122August 23, 2020 8:23 PM

Wow! I learned a lot about this film I didnā€™t know from this thread.

Geoffreys was in a horror film sometime around 2007(??) playing a school teacher, and the director cast him specifically because of who heā€™d been in FN. I remember there was an interview around the time and he discussed his drug/porn past and that heā€™d made peace with it. Good for him!

I always love this film and have seen it countless times. A great, solid, wild 80ā€™s horror comedy with great effects and a crisp use of sound. I think the casting peculiarities only make it more interesting.

The sequel I have burned in a disc from bittorent. I didnā€™t even find out it existed until the 2010ā€™s. I like it a lot but you can see how itā€™s much weaker in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 123August 23, 2020 8:40 PM

The female lead of part 2 was very good both sexy and scary but that weird interpretive dance she does where she suddenly turns into possessed Bruce Campbell from Evil Dead is still weird.

by Anonymousreply 124August 23, 2020 8:44 PM

The actor who was HIV positive in the initial sequel was Merritt Butrick, who is most famous for playing the new waver Johnny Slash in SQUARE PEGS. He was part of the first group of famous actors of the time to die from AIDS.

On the SQUARE PEGS dvd set thereā€™s a wonderful sequence of all the actors on the show remembering him.

He did a lot of stuff. Movies and tv. High and low. One of his last film roles is in a hysterically weird 80ā€™s horror film called DEATH SPA (title tells all... its an possessed gym). His character is kind of trans!

by Anonymousreply 125August 23, 2020 8:48 PM

FRIGHT NIGHT PART 2 from 1988 also features Brian Thompson in his younger beefcake male model-y days. He was a kind of rougher version of Jean Claude Van Dam. He had a very sculpted face and tall, bodybuilder body. His character is a vampire bodyguard who randomly eats insects, always saying the name of the insect before putting it in his mouth.

That sequel was going for the same wild tone as the first but it doesnā€™t quite come together.

And the lead ā€œperformance artistā€ vampire when sheā€™s covered in blood and hosting the tv show reminds me of Diamanda Galas!

by Anonymousreply 126August 23, 2020 8:54 PM

r126 Do you have high expertise for the touted Fright Night 3?

by Anonymousreply 127August 23, 2020 10:25 PM

I meant high expectations in r127 r126 apologies

Interesting - Traci Lind who played Charley's girlfriend in Fright Night dated Dodi Fayed and apparently he was abusive to her, according to her.

Watched this for the first time as was on TV in the UK last week. Really liked it. Crazy that guy did gay porn!

by Anonymousreply 133August 24, 2020 1:32 AM

r133 Did Chris Sarandon make your private bits jizz with excitement?!šŸ”„šŸ˜˜

by Anonymousreply 134August 24, 2020 6:27 AM

He really did. But so did the guy who went on to play Herman.

I first saw him on Buffy. He played 2 different characters (one being a vampire). Also remember he's in The Terminator and Mortal Kombat Annihilation.

by Anonymousreply 137August 24, 2020 2:38 PM

Near Dark is a favorite of mine. Excellent film. I was in love with Adrian Pasdar in that. And he takes his shirt off!

Brian Thompsonā€™s scariest character is the psychotic killer he played in Stalloneā€™s COBRA.

William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse and Chris Sarandon are participating in a script read to benefit the Michigan Dems.

@ChrisSarandon The most terrifying vampire next door is coming back to life to hang with the @michigandems on October 30th. The only thing more frightening than the vampire next door trying to kill you is the man in the white house winning another election.

Fright Night is on Amazon Prime now, and so is Elvira: Mistress of the Dark!

by Anonymousreply 148October 26, 2020 3:34 AM

r144 I think Chris Sarandon is hard to beat or surpass in the role. He is simply perfectly cast for it.

by Anonymousreply 149October 26, 2020 4:02 AM

Chris Sarandon should have been bigger. What's he been doing?

by Anonymousreply 150October 26, 2020 4:26 AM

Sarandon had a cameo in the remake.

by Anonymousreply 151October 26, 2020 5:34 AM

Oh! Chris Sarandon was married to Susan. Theyā€™ve been divorced for decades. Thatā€™s interesting.

Really, Susan should have let Chris have his surname back, when they divorced. It would have been the right thing. Instead she kept it and dragged it into one cause after another.

That poor surname, what itā€™s had to endure.

by Anonymousreply 152October 26, 2020 6:02 AM

The poster is magnificent. So 80s.

by Anonymousreply 153October 26, 2020 6:57 AM

Fright Night and Elvira Mistress of the Dark actually make the PERFECT double bill. Horror and comedy brought together seamlessly. I loved when '80s movies did that. Vamp is another example, and probably Return of the Living Dead.

by Anonymousreply 154October 26, 2020 7:00 AM

R151 a terrible one.

It was an average movie. I liked Chris Sarandon as the vampire. The sequel was exactly the same as the original. EXACTLY the same.

Roddy McDowell.

Ryan Atwood is narrating? How random šŸ˜„

by Anonymousreply 161October 29, 2020 9:44 PM

Great topic, so as caveat for anyone curious if Fright Night's 1985 promotional book--based on its spec script--is better than the first movie: original seduction scenes planned between Sarandon and Bearse are entirely buzzkills.

[quote]Really, Susan should have let Chris have his surname back, when they divorced. It would have been the right thing. Instead she kept it and dragged it into one cause after another.

They divorced well before she became famous so it's not like she was so tethered to the name, and she didn't need his name for promotion like Angie Bowie who never gave up the surname after divorcing David. Susan Tomalin isn't a terrible name.

[quote]Ryan Atwood is narrating? How random šŸ˜„

I think Michael Rosenbaum who played Lex Luthor on CW's "Smallville" was going to narrate. Chris Sarandon and Rosenbaum both tweeted his involvement, but later Rosenbaum said he had to bow out.

Aww that sucks. I'm sure Ben did a good job.

by Anonymousreply 165October 29, 2020 10:43 PM

Dang, Chris Sarandon is 78 years old. I thought he was maybe in his late 60ā€™s.

And heā€™s married to Monty Hallā€™s daughter, who starred in one of my favorite childhood movies- FX 2. Interesting.

by Anonymousreply 166October 29, 2020 10:57 PM

And I would let you, R164. That really was terrible of me

by Anonymousreply 167October 29, 2020 11:05 PM

I love Fright Night. Far from "average".

by Anonymousreply 168October 30, 2020 1:04 AM

Oh, come on. It was just another vampire movie.

by Anonymousreply 169October 30, 2020 1:48 AM

r168 So true! An excellent stand out cult movie that manages a brilliant balance of horror and sexiness.

by Anonymousreply 170October 30, 2020 3:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 172October 30, 2020 12:43 PM

She was good at playing those WASP-y, virginal teases. Right before Fright Night, she played a similar type of character in the teen sex comedy Fraternity Vacation, which also starred Stephen Geoffreys.
