Pew finds Latinos don't want the term "Latinx"

Gretchen, stop trying to make Latinx happen, it's not going to happen.

by Anonymousreply 74November 7, 2020 1:21 AM

Theytinx it's stupid.

by Anonymousreply 1August 11, 2020 6:49 PM

Too bad. We want it.

by Anonymousreply 2August 11, 2020 7:07 PM

Please alert Elizabeth Warren.

by Anonymousreply 3August 11, 2020 7:09 PM

I thought the term was meant to describe the transgendered and/or sexually-fluid members of that race. Since they’re not exactly Latino or Latina, they did what they could to still be identifiable with the Latin community. It makes sense on that level, but it’s also drawing a lot of criticism from people who prefer the traditional labels that have existed since forever.

by Anonymousreply 4August 11, 2020 7:10 PM

No, it has taken over in some circles are just the term for latino people r4. And it shouldn't. I am quite progressive but latinx is a stupid term that doesn't even make sense to people who speak Spanish. It is gringos forcing a term on hispanic people.

by Anonymousreply 5August 11, 2020 7:13 PM

Big surprise. A term imposed on them is not going to be widely accepted.

by Anonymousreply 6August 11, 2020 7:15 PM

How is it pronounced, anyway?

What about just saying “Latin”? Or do we think Marcus Tullius Cicero would complain?

by Anonymousreply 7August 11, 2020 7:22 PM

Spandex?

by Anonymousreply 8August 11, 2020 7:24 PM

I'm shocked. You mean idiots on twitter don't actually speak for the majority of the population?

by Anonymousreply 9August 11, 2020 7:36 PM

Can this be slapped (literally) in the face of every white person that pushes Latinx?

by Anonymousreply 10August 11, 2020 7:37 PM

Im cuban and I would like to know what the hell Latinx means??? when I was growing up in cuba I never heard the word hispano/a, we were either latinoamericanos because of latinamerica or iberoamericanos for people who identify themselves with their spanish/portuguese ancestry.

by Anonymousreply 11August 11, 2020 7:39 PM

[Quote]How is it pronounced, anyway?

Most of the woke people pronounce it Latin X. (Like Malcolm X.)

I guess you can also pronounce it "la-TEEN-ex," too, and not get yelled at.

by Anonymousreply 12August 11, 2020 7:45 PM

It's about dismantling patriarchal systems. I get the sentiment, but understand the resistance.

Unfortunately, it is at odds with almost all the romance languages that have gender-based articles and verbs.

by Anonymousreply 13August 11, 2020 7:48 PM

Latinos and Latinas are always so sensible and down to earth.

by Anonymousreply 14August 11, 2020 7:53 PM

[quote]It's about dismantling patriarchal systems.

Uh...white Americans imposing a language change to the Spanish speaking world is "dismantling patriarchal systems"? Could you explain to us how?

by Anonymousreply 15August 11, 2020 7:56 PM

It also sounds bad.

Also why we didn't get xer.

Stop with the x. The human mind mostly hates it. Its supposed to be the 'shit, we don't know what to put here' sound/letter! Why don't the supposedly educated get that?

by Anonymousreply 16August 11, 2020 8:01 PM

r15, make language gender neutral. I don't know if the goal is for a wholesale change of the language, but they are on a very slippery slope. And you're absolutely right, it appears to have originated with non-native Spanish speakers.

by Anonymousreply 17August 11, 2020 8:02 PM

Well they're much smarter than some people give them credit for. The whole X thing is idiotic.

by Anonymousreply 18August 11, 2020 8:02 PM

Spanish is a gendered language and there is no escaping that fact. You cannot change an entire language and it’s vocabulary to appease the mentally ill.

The door is female and the port is male!

by Anonymousreply 19August 11, 2020 8:07 PM

I prefer Latine. It makes more sense for Spanish speakers, as words usually end with an A, O, or E. It looks like it's more popular among LGBT/Feminist/activists folks in Latin American than Latinx, although some people substitute an x for a/o in written speech.

by Anonymousreply 20August 11, 2020 8:12 PM

I've watched a lot of Latinxxx videos on PornHub. They got nothing to be ashamed of.

by Anonymousreply 21August 11, 2020 8:17 PM

"Latine" at least sounds somewhat like the word "Latin" pronounced by someone of that background.

by Anonymousreply 22August 11, 2020 8:17 PM

No one in the Spanish speaking world gives a rats ass about what you think of their language.

by Anonymousreply 23August 11, 2020 8:21 PM

As a LatinA

I hate the term. No way no how will I ever use it.

by Anonymousreply 24August 11, 2020 8:53 PM

In German we now also have gendered language: Student*in refers to a male and female student, before that it was Student; other examples Kolleg*innen

by Anonymousreply 25August 11, 2020 9:00 PM

R25 I don't understand how German works. I've learned English, Spanish, and French, but German eludes me. You all just smoosh 5 words together to make one. TEACH ME BABE!

by Anonymousreply 26August 11, 2020 9:03 PM

That's because most people haven't even heard of it, OP

by Anonymousreply 27August 11, 2020 9:04 PM

^ For example: rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz

by Anonymousreply 28August 11, 2020 9:04 PM

Or obengroupenfuhrer

However the hell you spell that horrid word.

by Anonymousreply 29August 11, 2020 9:06 PM

I have a gmail account, where you can write me!

by Anonymousreply 30August 11, 2020 9:08 PM

R30 Teach me through the language of German love!

by Anonymousreply 31August 11, 2020 9:13 PM

channelcriterion1.@gmail.com

Anybody here can write me! I need gay men in my life!

by Anonymousreply 32August 11, 2020 9:16 PM

Latinx is dumb.

But do we know how the Latin non-binary and trans community feels...

by Anonymousreply 33August 11, 2020 9:19 PM

Don’t care, R33

by Anonymousreply 34August 11, 2020 9:21 PM

GermanGayGuy WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! You're going to get spammed like crazy sharing your email on DL!!

by Anonymousreply 35August 11, 2020 9:21 PM

Pretty soon the SJW's will go after the Romance languages because they have gendered nouns (masculine and feminine). Let's eradicate language while we are at it. The world has gone insane.

by Anonymousreply 36August 11, 2020 9:27 PM

I didn't realise it's not pronounced Latinks until watching Mrs Fletcher.

by Anonymousreply 37August 11, 2020 9:33 PM

It’s not about what they want.

We must erase gender from language!

by Anonymousreply 38August 11, 2020 9:42 PM

My husband his Latino and despises Latinx. It is no different than having to change my own identity to being cis-male...I AM a male. Why do others feel the need to define everyone by their new catchy terms?

by Anonymousreply 39August 11, 2020 9:49 PM

Why didn’t they just advocate for the neutral label “Latin”? We already refer to the Spanish-speaking Americas as “Latin-America.”

“Latine” looks too much like “latrine.”

by Anonymousreply 40August 11, 2020 11:37 PM

Here in Miami, everyone hates Latino/a. And Latinx is no better.

The preferred term here is Hispanic. Latino/a/x is only appropriate for the most stereotypical.

by Anonymousreply 41August 11, 2020 11:52 PM

Spanish speakers who APPROVE of being called Latinx.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 42August 12, 2020 1:46 AM

Sometimes these oppressed people don't know what's good for them.

by Anonymousreply 43August 12, 2020 1:57 AM

Fucking white liberals are responsible for this. Imposing English-language rules on a gendered language "for the good of everybody."

If these assholes tried this with the Italian language, Italians would tell them all to go fuck themselves.

by Anonymousreply 44August 12, 2020 2:24 AM

Claro que sí.

Latino/Latina > Latinx

Ahora se va a ponerse a la chingada!

by Anonymousreply 45August 12, 2020 2:35 AM

spanish speakers can barely pronounce an S at the end of a word, let alone an X.

by Anonymousreply 46August 12, 2020 2:48 AM

R46 are you sure you don't mean French?

by Anonymousreply 47August 12, 2020 3:21 AM

"Latinx" is grotesque white liberal Colonialism, and cultural erasure. It is asinine!

Language IS culture, and to come along and "correct" entire languages which observe male and female nouns to make them "correct" and "palatable" generally for those outside this culture is appalling, and shocking.

The bizarre notion that this is some woke improvement is pure insanity. The Spanish language does not need to be corrected, Whitey!

by Anonymousreply 48August 12, 2020 4:03 AM

[quote]It's about dismantling patriarchal systems.

It's about imposing patriarchal systems.

by Anonymousreply 49August 12, 2020 4:08 AM

I’ve never met a native Spanish speaker who doesn’t react with disgust when exposed to the term #LATINX

The identity politics progressive collectivist “left” has lost all credibility.

by Anonymousreply 50August 12, 2020 4:13 AM

For centuries we have used the same words and stems in our languages. It requires some thought to ascertain the true meaning or context of a word, but that’s the point. People do not want to think anymore. Everything should be simple so they don’t have to use the brain cells they have. No one wants to master an academic subject, and if they do, they are mocked for it.

I try to explain to young people we had our social communication networks back in the day. We didn’t have to text or call. If you had a party, all the people you wanted to come were there. You had to put out the extra effort to create the message chains so everyone would know they were welcome to join us. Yes, we actually communicated face to face. What a concept.

by Anonymousreply 51August 12, 2020 4:27 AM

R32, I post my email here from time to time.

I also thought I would get spammed by lots of crazies, but that has never happened.

by Anonymousreply 52August 13, 2020 4:05 AM

I dont know what century R51 is writing from, but you did have to call.

Or you had to write. But the mail in big cities used to be faster then. You could mail a letter and receive a reply by mail (if you were quick) in the same day.

by Anonymousreply 53August 13, 2020 6:39 AM

And now Latinos have spoken.

by Anonymousreply 54November 4, 2020 8:29 AM

So?

Words don't exist just for some people.

by Anonymousreply 55November 4, 2020 8:35 AM

Anyone calling a Latino person LATINX is going to get punched.

by Anonymousreply 56November 5, 2020 4:10 AM

Having to say "Latino/Latina" all the time is ridiculous.

Gendered languages are ridiculous.

Latinx is just putting an "x" in place of the final vowel, meaning "either a or o". It makes perfect sense.

by Anonymousreply 57November 5, 2020 4:43 AM

[quote]And now Latinos have spoken.

So... only the MEN have spoken?

Do you see the problem now?

by Anonymousreply 58November 5, 2020 4:43 AM

Uh-oh R51 you said the word “master.” HR is coming to get you.

by Anonymousreply 59November 5, 2020 5:10 AM

Yes, is the alternative that we say Latino and Latina everytime?

No thanks.

by Anonymousreply 60November 5, 2020 7:36 AM

Maybe y'all should have seen the writing on the wall before the election. I say this as a Biden supporter. This is why a ton of Latinos voted for Trump. The dems need to stop catering to people using identity politics. The trans issue is a huge fucking deal, same with forcing someone who use a word to identify themselves that they don't even want to use. Latinx is never gonna happen. Enough. Listen to the people you serve.

by Anonymousreply 61November 5, 2020 8:20 AM

Latina probably isn't going anywhere, but like womyn or wimmim, it will only catch on among a small, vocal group.

by Anonymousreply 62November 5, 2020 8:53 AM

Are Latinas useful on garbage detail?

by Anonymousreply 63November 5, 2020 9:01 AM

R57, it's not up to you to change it, nor English-speakers generally. Any change of this nature has to arise naturally within the community of Spanish-speaking countries.

Besides, what are the correct articles for "Latinx"? It can't be "el"; it can't be "la". The neutral article "lo" exists, but its use is constrained grammatically. It sounds unnatural in other contexts. Furthermore, the plural (which doesn't currently exist because the nouns to which "lo" is applied are always singular) would have to be "los". Oops.

And is it "un Latinx"? "Una Latinx"? What endings are used with corresponding adjectives? Is an ugly Latinx "unx fex latinx"?

You see? This made-up word doesn't work at all in Spanish, which is why it's stupid to try to force it on Spanish speakers or adopt it in English.

by Anonymousreply 64November 5, 2020 9:05 AM

[quote][R57], it's not up to you to change it, nor English-speakers generally.

Of course it is.

Nobody owns language. Everybody owns language.

by Anonymousreply 65November 5, 2020 9:06 AM

I'm a Latino man. Call me Latina. I don't care. But don't fucking call me Latinx, guerro.

by Anonymousreply 66November 5, 2020 9:36 AM

57 exemplifies an arrogance that only an Anglo Saxon/ Germanic background can produce. It is NOT for Anglos to try and change others' languages. And from outside of their countries, too?! Whatever he or she is smoking, I need some in order to insitgate the narcissism that is so accepeted and renumerated today and that they have in surplus. And yes, Sunshine, at 65 the people whose language it is, own it. As for the one who can't seem to say three syllables and "needs" to say two because he doesn't want to say "latina/latino"? From the time that you can type that on here, your knuckles are obviously not dragging on the ground. Add the fact you used a quadrisyllabic word in there to explain why you don't want to use trisyllabic words...maybe you need to go sit down somewhere and find something constructive to do, because it is obvious that you are not out here talking in Grunt. Reminds of the racist Welsh people who funnily enough couldn't say my Sierra Leoneon grandfather's surname "Kutu", but when he started using the Anglicised Welsh surname Roberts to negotiate his livity in Britain, they could and without irony,( what with it being Anglicised and not even "Welsh Welsh"). Fucking racist idiots like the aforementioned twats.

by Anonymousreply 67November 5, 2020 9:47 AM

[quote]And yes, Sunshine, at 65 the people whose language it is, own it.

Well, since Latinx occurs only in English then English speakers own it.

by Anonymousreply 68November 5, 2020 10:26 AM

R68 maybe you do, I don't. It's hideous and there's nothing progressive about labeling people by a term they reject!

by Anonymousreply 69November 5, 2020 11:24 AM

R68 and to drive it home further, whites that support this crap are the same breed as those that ended up erasing my people's language (almost to extinction) because they knew what's "better" for us. Fuck off with that shit.

by Anonymousreply 70November 5, 2020 11:26 AM

English speakers using the term Latinx doesn't 'erase' how people in the Spanish speaking world chose to speak Spanish.

It's just a translation.

by Anonymousreply 71November 5, 2020 11:34 AM

What do womyn born Latyn in THIS lifetime want?

by Anonymousreply 72November 5, 2020 3:44 PM

The fact that this push is being driven by gringo (pardon, "gringx") wokesters and third-generation diaspora kids whose knowledge of Spanish extends to "abuelita", "chancla" and "adobo" tells you all you need to know about this "Latinx" nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 73November 5, 2020 3:53 PM

Fuck off R61. "Identity Politics" is a RWNJ code word used to smear the very concept of equal civil rights.

Stop it.

The GOP runs on identity politics too... The identity is just "Straight White Male" for EVERYTHING. Straight White Male Supremacy. Straight White Male as the "Default". Straight White Male as the only identity that "counts".

So fuck off.
