With apologies for being a broken record on these matters... we'd know exactly what happened and how many were infected in China if we'd not closed the CDC's field office in China when Trump threatened to cut the CDC budget (and, as in most cases with this IMPOTUS, installed a rightwing loon as the head of the agency that went full steam ahead with decimating the career-oriented/non-political infrastructure). We had people in country for a reason — and this is it. This is the prime example of how putting an idiot in the most important leadership role in the world has cost us untold sums, American lives, and our very way of life.

Yes, China lied and is lying about how many of their citizens had and have Covid-19. The only time it made a difference was back in December of 2019, when it became apparent that the Chinese had lost control of the virus. We could have contained it in China, if not Wuhan province, if we'd had the expertise, intelligence on site, and a diplomatic corp that had the confidence of Chinese officials, but Evangelicals in the American heartland gave all that up for the promise of political power to hate gays and force their beliefs down everyone's throats, and pulled the lever for the antiChrist.

Considering the drastic measures they took, reports that crematoriums were running 24/24 instead of 4h/day and that they needed additional mobile cremation stations, a lot. Easily 10 times what they reported, I think.

A cornerstone of the Obama foreign policy was to find common ground and work with anyone. He treated China fairly and earned their respect and their cooperation. They were very helpful in dealing with North Korea. Putin has been trying to co-opt the North Koreans for years. But getting back to Obama, his general policy was "we will work with anyone on areas of mutual interest. This allowed him to develop the nuclear treaty with Iran...which Putin hated. He also was really fucking with Putin in Europe.

And the Climate crisis, the Paris Accords, etc? Obama was really successful in reducing our dependence on foreign oil and developing alternatives. That was killing Putin because Obama took a leadership role and Merkel, Macron and his predecessors and most others in NATO adored Obama. China liked Obama, trusted him, and they knew they were dealing with a shakedown artist and an unstable piece of shit when Trump walked in. The Chinese play the long game. That they would allow a leak indicating they were supporting Trump's defeat, is important. China may be trying to fuck Putin up in ways he never dreamed of. Always remember. We are not alone. With the exception of a few weak rogue nations, most of the world hates Trump and will happily work to end his regime.

Like others have already said here - when China said lockdown, testing, hospital treatment and quarantine - they fucking meant it.

They dragged people off the street to quarantine and hospitals and welded people's doors closed. With a population that size they couldn't afford to let COVID-19 turn into what it has in the US. What a shitshow. Their hard line stance on the virus means they have suppressed it to the point where they are able to go about life in a "new normal" - like many other countries are too.

As for China lying about their numbers - who knows. To what effect? Probably no more than the US has done and there's been plenty of evidence of that.

Even Hillary has said that preventing the virus from entering the US would have been impossible. She said in an interview recently that if she were president it still would have entered but she'd have handled it better once it had arrived.

Whether China lied about its COVID cases is completely irrelevant. What is VERY relevant is that China lied about the origins of COVID and its deliberate targeting of and spread through the West.
